I've never used an LG phone before. I've always had a Samsung. And it hasn't exactly disappointed me so far.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone "recommend" any LG phone. I'm only buying this one because of it's uber specs and it's ultra low price (I can't afford a phone of this stature otherwise). Also maybe because I need a new phone. I'm currently using the Galaxy 3 (not s3).
If I buy this phone I'm going to have to get it from the US through a relative or a friend. Which basically means no warranty. And it's LG. And its battery is non removable.
What are your views on this?
Also, can someone convince me to buy this phone?
LG makes great hardware, but ruins it with their software support. Moot point here, as Google brings the updates. It's a win-win
This phone looks to have a solid build. Reminds me of the Blackberry 9900 Bold Touch, pure metal black finish.
Sounds like you don't have any experience with LG handsets. They make good hardware according to most reviews I've seen.
Just because you've never heard anything about LG handsets doesn't mean they are crap. You should go to the store and check some out for yourself.

Why does no one give LG a chance. Everybody said they would never buy another Samsung phone. Look how that turned out. This will be a solidly built device (LG) with solidly done software(Google). It should be a no brainer from those standpoints.

The early indications are really good, hopefully it doesn't have any bugs that only come out after launch.
In China, LG is fine.
I can't believe you liked Samsung's quality. From their crappy phone days they've never made a solid looking phone. The only thing that prevented me from getting a Nexus earlier is that they were made by Samsung. I'll throw in my money and gamble with it.

Bugs will not be LG's fault
I'd only be worried about it if it weren't a nexus device. Every LG phone that's had problems has always been OS related from what I've seen and heard.
to be honest I am never going to buy samsung cause of ther crappy build body. I used note, S3, S2 and all of them had a crappy plastic body. Samsung doing it wrong look it your S2, S3 or Notes especially the body part, I am happy that google pick LG but I most expected Motorola

Bugs is the wrong word, I mean hardware faults, bad batches etc.
All devices will have some of those as well. Lg hw does not have a bad rep but every mass produced device has issues. The 7 had more than I can remember for a device in recent memory though.
The glass on the back will most likely by the thing everyone will complain about. Because it will break.
For example I think it was either Anand or Brian's iPhone 5 that actually had the screen separated from the device. He pushed it back in and it clipped in place. Later it came off again.
I have a reason to be skeptical about another lg phone. As a previous owner of an lg g2x, I was not happy with it. And yes the lg g2x was a Google phone with pure android and it sucked, lg support for it was horrible.

Indeed, and as far as i know it wasn't even stock android, atleast the european version weren't.
LG = Decent hardware, wank software support.
Since Google are dealing with the software, this should be pretty good.
in my country, this phone will have 0 resale price.. why?
coz its from lg..
and arabs are dumb enough to pay 1300$ for an iphone 5 they dun even know how to use..
on the bright side, my first lg jus got sold for this phone.. software sucked with locked bootloader..
but build quality was AMAZING
even better than my evo3d
LG makes good quality hardware, but the software isnt great and the ui lg uses is like using touchwiz 3.
But as software is handled by google, im willing to buy this one!

I own an S3 (Galaxy Nexus before the S3) and can't decide if I want this Nexus 4 or not. I have been reading a lot of complaints about LG phones, specifically shoddy hardware. So I'm curious if anyone in here buying the N4 have actually owned an LG phone before. I've been an Apple/Samsung guy for the last 4 years so making the switch is a little unsettling after reading some feedback on LG on XDA. It's a Google OS as vanilla as it gets, and that is a good thing. However after your return policy is up it will be LG supporting this device and backing the hardware, that's what concerns me.
Never owned an LG before ( except a fridge maybe?) but it's a nexus. Sometimes I even forget that it's made by LG.
Yeah it's a Nexus, but it's not made or supported by Google. That's my concern. The Nexus 7 is a Nexus and that has to be one of the most shoddily made devices I've ever owned. I went through 5 before I could actually use one without the screen lifting up.
No, and if this wasn't a Nexus, I would never buy it (someone said Optimus G?).
Because this is an LG, Google checks the device a million times and warranty is buy Google.
So I guess the only thing we need to worry about is how good does LG check devices coming from the factory. (just want to say I think HTC don't do it well.. they should sell their devices will a soldering kit to fix wifi / gps
Anyway, I own an LG Smart TV, and its awesome! No problems at all!
Used to have an Optimus 2x i changed out with a Galaxy Nexus after a year or so, it wasn't bad but the software support was awful, heck they haven't even done ICS for it yet, but it was atleast better than the Nexus which i got scratches on after a few months.
Sold that and changed to the SGS3 which i would've kept if it hadn't pinktinted my display, now i'm gonna get it repaired under warranty and sell that if there is nothing to the claimed issues with the Nexus 4 performance/heat conductivity.

Google does not warranty this device and where is your evidence that Google checks the device a million times. As it is Google has sent out review samples that are getting results all over the place. That doesn't instill a lot of confidence in Googles checks.
I'm not trying to crap on LG here, but I also don't want to blindly buy a device I know nothing about just because it's a Nexus. Like I said, the Nexus 7 is a Nexus and that has horrible build quality and quality control issues. When you have problems with a Nexus 7 after your Google Play return policy you are dealing with Asus, not Google for warranty issues.
I've had a G2x for a year and a half, and and although the software on it was horrible, the build quality was excellent. Their devices don't feel cheap at all.

Sent from my bootloader-locked MB865.
i had the Optimus 4X, and it is yet to be opened by LG. it has alot of security checks to make sure no one tries to abuse their licenced hardware functions.
they have the bootloader locked on the Tegra3 platform like Asus do on Prime, and no unlocking available.
If they follow their current strategy around sourcecode and proprietary code with security checks around the binaries being in place, i would stay far, far, far away from this device by LG.
It will never get any good support primarily because LG is behind it, so no Gold'LOL'Star from me for this release. It will probably fail long before it ever becomes a success.
exception is if Google agreed to keep this partnership with open sources, it might be totally differenty and LG is not using any special hardware which is closedsource NDA based. so probably based on buying a techkit from an electronics store where no licence is to be paid.

Evidences? No problem. Google checked the Galaxy Nexus and found out a serious bug at the emmc (or something like that). Then Samsung used it in the Galaxy Note (first one) and they got bricks...
And about warranty, at an Israeli forum we contact Google to ask them about warranty, and they said they are responsible for it..

I owned a LG Optimus One (p500) . Pretty good device. Now my mom uses it with CM9 without any problem
Owned a G2x and it was freaking terrible. I read all of the forums where people complained about random reboots and overheating and ignored them all. About a week or 2 after I purchased it I started getting reboots and my phone would get hot too. Don't just take my word for it. Remember LG just let the phone die and never really tool responsibility for it. They wrote the G2x off.
I'm not one of those uber-geeks who demands 0 light bleed or care if I can root it right away but after my G2x experience I vowed to never buy another LG phone again. But here I am. I too am torn between my horrible experience with LG vs. my love of Nexus phones. I think in this case, I'll wait a few weeks to see how the forums sound with first adapters and go from there.
My last five phones have all been LG. I had two dumb phones; the same dumb phone, actually. I used to be really horrible with cell phones (my record is eleven phones in one year) so after that particular phone had enough abuse, I bought it again since I liked it so much.
My first smartphone was the Optimus M from Metro, followed by the Optimus V on Virgin Mobile. When I joined my mom's family plan on T-Mobile, I stuck to what I know and got the G2x (Optimus 2X).
The hardware is nice. It's solid built phone with great specs. It's actual performance, though, was lack luster. I expected a lot more from that phone and I had issues with it that I didn't have on the two low end Optimus devices I owned prior. However, rooting the phone made a HUGE difference in performance and made my phone so much better. Also, I"m sure different users have difference experiences with that phone. My mom has the same phone, but has never had a single complaint about it like I have.
I was in the whole "LG never again camp, but it was confirmed LG was making the Nexus and it was being sold for the price it's being sold for. I'm hoping that, being a Nexus, I won't experience the same problems that I did with my G2x. Despite my history with the G2x, I am more than likely DEFINITELY going to buy the Nexus 4. I will, however, wait for the early adopters to get theirs so we can have some real reviews by real people before I spend money on it, but I'm pretty sure I will own it by December.
My original plan was just to get the Galaxy Nexus to hold me over until my contract was up in July, then either check out the latest and greatest from Android or switch to Windows Phone. Since the Nexus 4 is being sold for the same price as the Galaxy Nexus, though, I'm just going to buy that, then move myself to a contract free plan in July.
So, yeah... this is going to be my sixth LG phone in a row. I've only had ONE bad experience with them and Nvidia can actually take part of the blame for that so it isn't all LG. Still, with the right ROM (currently running CM10 Paranoid Android), I do enjoy my G2x. I'm almost confident that Nexus 4 will by fine out of the box and it will definitely be a noticeable upgrade for me.
i was wondering if the nexus 10 really does have better hardware than my asus infinity tf700?... is the processor really better? graphics?, customer support is a huge issue too as asus is making me VERY angry.... also, about how long should i wait to let them iron out the issues with a new device before i buy one?

Yes, it has better hardware. The Nexus 10 has the best hardware to date relative to other Android tablets. It falls short graphically compared to the iPad 4 but is more powerful in terms of the CPU.
As for the apparent performance of the Nexus 10, we won't know until people actually start to post their own reviews.
What issues do you speak of? Software-wise, it's an issue if you make it an issue. There will inevitably be hiccups here and there (as all Android devices do). If you don't mind that, then that's not quite an issue. If it is, you can simply just root it and iron our those issues yourself. Hardware-wise, there shouldn't be much of a difference whether you buy it now or later.
Buy it now or buy it later, the only thing that will be different will most likely be the price.
better hardware? not really sure about that but better software for sure. I buy this mainly because of the pure Android OS and the screen.
better buy it as soon as you can. the more you wait, the sooner the device gets outdated.
Not worth it at all - your TF700 is powerful enough, has just the right amt of pixels @ 1920x1080. It offers MicroSD support, fully functional dock with extra batter in it etc etc.
The only problem with all of ASUS Transformers is the dismal internal flash performance. Some are going so far as to reinstall the OS itself on microSD, via custom ROM, effectively forgoing built-in flash.

I'd say we can leave the difference in resolution aside, I personally would have been just as happy with "plain old full HD". That leaves us with:
a much faster CPU
a much faster GPU
much faster RAM with dual channel
much much faster internal storage
Better WiFi with MIMO
Bluetooth 4.0
The Infinity has its advantages in the docking station, SD support and battery life. Still I think it safe to say the N10 has better hardware.

Since summer I was in a long waiting mode for a TF700 purchase by the end of this year, after many hours research I convinced myself that it will be the best buy, solid build, nice keyboard docking, fast enough, good look and feel.
But Nexus 10 comes out so I compared. Eventually I decided to go for the so-called ugly N10. Basically I trade off the beauty of typing for a slightly faster tablet which has the best and fastest software support (from xda).
problem with the infinity, is i cant stand asus, and with the current bootloader they make it unmodifyable without great risk, cant even use nvflash on it... so i think thats garbage... also, i dont care about keyboard support, the only time i would ever need a keyboard is when im at home where i can just have a bluetooth keyboard sync up... so id rather have something that didnt pander so much towards being used with a docking station
so.. with my asus if i sell it im probably going to take a $100-$150 loss when i pay to have it reflashed, and then sell it, i should just go ahead and purchase the nexus 10 before then
when theyre back in stock, of course... 16gb is in stock but im waiting for the 32
this threads killing me "should i buy this should i buy that!" !

I had the TF700 running Clean ROM with Data2SD. With a fast SD card, it worked well. As I have no real world use for the Keyboard Dock I returned the Asus for a few reasons, mainly being inside of my return window with Best Buy. If you don't have that option, i'm sure your Infinity will do just fine. That said, as soon as I can actually get the Nexus 10 in hand, i'll have a better idea of if I personally feel it was "worth it".
Some things to think about,
- ASUS bootloader unlocking tool apparently voids your warranty
- While Data2SD is great, the UH-1 cards aren't all that cheap
- From what i've read, FHD on the Tegra 3 is "pushing it"
- I officially purchased 5 (but actually opened 9, 4 while standing in Best Buy), for a variety of reasons. I'm not all that picky to begin with, so I had concerns of the screen lifting/moving after I had passed my return policy window.
As a previous owner of the Infinity, I intend provide an update on my view of the TF700 vs N10.
well ill be interested to hear how you compare the two... i dont have any use for a keyboard dock either, their usb adapter doesnt work well at all, and the power cord on the bottom makes it akward at times... but mostly, im just tired of the asus company, ive had a run of 3-4 of their products fail on me with questionable customer service experience... compare that to my acer hardware which seems to last forever... im just looking for a new direction after i give up on asus products... i think the nexus 10 will be a great place to start
well i had a tf300t that i sold to get a nexus 10 ,what is annoying is that asus is giving bootloader unlock and in some cases later on on hardware defect they blame the user (you need to give your serial etc in order to unlock bootloader and even if you relock they have your infos).
well in my point of view a google device is more flashable and not so strict on those terms.
also what i think is that soon devs will release apps on this resolution as in android dev kit there will be an emulator for it .
win win situation is to wait a little more to see what is on the horizon.
myself i bought nexus 10 upon release and i am waiting for it

Which one would you recon would be a better all around phone
One X + specs http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4976
Nexus 4 specs http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_nexus_4_e960-5048.php
I would go for the nexus 4 but the 16gb space seems too limiting and I love the sense UI but also hate how manufacturers take ages to release the android os updates hence always turn to custom roms and am a frequent flasher.
which one would you also recon has better battery life?
i would compare htc with samsung but not with nexus..
getting a nexus phone isn't only about the specs of the phone,
if u need pure android and fast updates with limited hardware specs then go for nexus
if u need a device for its hardware spec like storage and the ability to increase is then i suggest u go with htc.
since the sgs 1 i got i will never go for other than the nexus samsung left as with their GB and never got updates since then..although we got many custom roms but still not like stock.
at the end it is ur decision be wise and think twice before taking the next step.
GoodLuck
It's your call on the phone. They have pros and cons. The flagship phones usually get updates longer then lower end models. HTC has good hardware. Nexus is bare bones and designed to be minimalist.
Why do people keep saying the Nexus is limited this or lacks hardware that? The Nexus 4 is one of the most powerful devices on the market. In fact, it has the smoothest performance out of all the devices. Do yourself a favor and get the Nexus, If you want somewhat better pictures then get the One X.
1gb of ram is fail, especially on a sense phone where the ui uses a third of your ram from boot

and who says nexus 4 has limited hardware! its a powerful phone mc4 whit max setting(mod) runs at 50-29 FPS
I used to have a one s and a one x...and i would definitely keep the nexus over both. HTC's always get support for like a couple of months after release then just die. Also updates never happen. After the one s and x i'm most likely never going to buy another HTC again.

How many VS. threads are yet to follow to clutter up XDA Use (for instance) Google and Youtube to search for and compare phones.
doesn't matter anymore
Since Google now updates apps instead of Os, getting a Nexus device no longer matters. Jelly Bean is a mature OS. Nothing really new out there. Rumours are 4.3 will contain minimal improvements. Not as important anymore. Go with phones that has features that matter to you now. Not 2 years from now.
but when 5.0 comes out people will come back to Nexus and bashing the OEM's again for being late because its a major update and that will take awhile.
plus, Seriously considering One X series?? do yourself a favor and get HTC One(M7). else, Nexus it is! spec might not be as good as S4 or One, but definitely smoother than them. We are talking about a device which is optimized/in-sync with the OS itself here.
its a no brainer to choose Nexus 4 for me cuz of the price. and updates are important, cuz you know money doesn't easily come so i have to make it count. i'm a geek so i have to be the latest in software. haha.

Incorrect. Nexus devices so matter. Nexus has one thing that other phones do not and that is the availability of working drivers from the very start.
When Android 4.3 come out, other phones will have broken auto rotate, cellular data, bluetooth, gps or whatever it may be because of the drivers not working properly with 4.3 and when 5.0 comes out, it will be even more significant to the point that it will be a large transition kind of like Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich depending on what 5.0 includes.

It's not noticeable but the slight stutter is there. I played with One almost everyday. It is fast, with RARE slowdown. Sometimes in loading an app.

True it is quite powerful, but when I was comparing the N4 to say a used S3, couple of things stood out (And course this could be the same comparison to a One X+)
- No user-removable battery, as such no extendable battery, the N4's powerful cpu can suck down that 2100mA battery pretty easy.
- No micro-SD card , so no readability there, but can put a 64GB into an S3
- No USB-OTG support (so can't just plan on using some 32GB thumbdrive, and you only have a choice of 8GB or 16GB, no 32GB model yet)
That's basically what my take on it, an its usually non-issue to most people.
Far as a N4 vs a One, just in terms of practicality and not doing number crunching, especially since I feel like both of them are rather nice and would likely be happy with either for day to day use.
On the N4 :
1) Extremely easy to unlock the bootloader (fastboot oem unlock, no codes, etc).
2) Extremely easy to add a custom recovery (fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img)
3) Extremely easy to just add a custom rom (boot up into recovery, wipe, adb push what you want, flash)
4) Rather easy to root stock AOSP once you got recovery (TWRP will isntall SuperSu for you, just let SuperSu do the rest)
5) More likely to use the shipped AOSP rom than I would HTC Sense
6) If google says a phone is getting an update, it's getting an update, none of that HTC BS bout Desire-HD getting ICS then all the sudden Nope.
And besides, it's nearly impossible to hard brick a Nexus 4, if you're a flash-a-holic, unlike the HTC One X that my brother somehow hard-bricked (he only had it rooted, nothing more) and just shut down and is a paperweight (I spent maybe 3 weeks on seeing if I could repair it before it got tossed).

What price those going to run at anyways? I mean if it's 200-300$ more than the normal edition with Sense, I'd rather get a Nexus4 that already had the same treatment, or wait until the AOSP version been out a while, root a normal OneX+ and then put a rooted AOSP rom based on that release onto it and save a few hundred. (assuming physically both models are the same... though not likely).
Though if the price is at what NewEgg has it at right now (399$ (50% off) for an Unlocked HTC One X+ 16GB) , then it's a bit of a tougher decision compared to the 350$ you'd pay for the N4 16GB. But if it's at the 600-700$ range... I'm going for the N4.

Looks like kamranhaghighi (and maybe LuffyPSP) are to blame for necro-bumpin'
PS: In the searchable interwebs, topics like these rarely stay for the sole benefit of just the original poster. (course that being said I wonder how many other N4 vs HTC One [blank] threads there are).

I'm thinking of buying the nexus 4, I'll be upgrading from the Galaxy Nexus, now my question is, I know the N4 wont be supported by Google in the near future and one of the reasons Google gave to stop supporting the GN was the OMAP processor issue (being closed sourced and all)
So, since I'm not american I can't buy directly from the Google Play Store a phone and there is a good price for the N4 in amazon, I'm wondering if the n4 processor will suffer the fate of its older brother? When Google drops support for the n4, will we be able to compile newer kernels? I understand the GN is stuck on 3.0.10 or something while the rest is somewhere 3.4

Check back with me in 18 months... My crystal ball is a bit cloudy right now
If someone can answer this for you, ask them about stock market buys or lottery numbers (and post their responses here).

Even if Google doesn't support it in the future, you always have AOSP

I wonder because the OMAP processor used proprietary technology, I don't know about the N4
N4 has a good snapdragon s4 processor. So I'll doubt it'll be dropped, and even if it is, we'll still have custom ROM support. Although if I were you @op I would go and buy an n5.

This i agree on the 18 month window thing google said is bull they just didnt want to work on a device with dropped support from TI
Qualcomm will have a longer future and will be supporting the processor each update

Yeah, Google could have just told us all that its because of TI, even I find the 18 month window reason ridiculous. I don't see why they would drop support for such a good device when the RAM requirements in KitKat have been reduced to 512MB.

And the Galaxy nexus has 1GB ram witch it can fully handle kitkat (looking at roms)
I'm actually using KitKat on my GN, all bugs have been fixed but they can't compile 3.4 kernels because of the TI OMAP dropped support issue, I think this will be an issue in the long run with future versions of android, I know they'll try to work around it to fix the issues. I'm running kitkat with a 3.0.10 kernel and its running beautiful but I'm not sure if we are taking all the advantages of the 3.4 kernel.
Oh I would love to buy an N5 @Lt.Win but I can only buy through amazon and the price there is ridiculously expensive, around 500$ when in the google play store is only 350$ and in my country we can't buy phones on the google store, not even through proxys or VPN, and I wouldn't ever use my CC on a VPN or a proxy. So, since the N4 its 350$ on amazon it will have to do, It's still a great phone I think.
I want to delete this reply but i dont know how
Yes, the N4 is a great device. Sad to hear you can only buy from amazon. Isn't there an eBay of your country? If not, have you tried checking eBay.com? I've seen quite a few sellers who ship internationally, and usually around the same price as Play Store. Do check there and try your luck. If not, then yes, you can always buy an N4.
Oh, and I think it is quite possible to back-port important / useful features of the 3.4 Kernel to 3.0.x, since it is 3.x.x, and not some old GB Kernel. So in that way you may be able to hold on to it for a year or so, maybe. Anyways, good luck on finding the phone(s)!
