Splashtop HD + Keyboard Dock = Minecraft?

I have been toying around with the idea of purchasing the keyboard dock for my Transformer.
Yesterday I was messing around with Splashtop HD, which is a remote desktop-ish app.
I wondered if you might be able to control Minecraft using the keyboard dock over Splashtop? Or even if you could plug in a USB mouse and control it through that as well.
If this were possible I would definitely buy a keyboard dock.... like tomorrow lol.

It would definitely play, but good luck with the camera. Android doesn't know how to deal with hovering and relative position of the mouse cursor, because, being primarily a touchscreen OS, it requires that you click and drag everything, just like how you would handle panning and rotation by touching the screen with your fingers. The same applies to most apps currently available. The OS doesn't mechanically "know" where the cursor is until you click on something, so that means in a first person game like Minecraft you have to constantly click and drag to rotate the camera.

AND no right click... kinda pointless if you are the builder type.

I know this is old, but thought I'd respond anyway.
There is a right click you can use; it is under Asus options when you go into settings. Choose to set right click to be context menu instead of acting like the back button.
It does work, but not well. As said above, the cursor has difficulty following you, so I just end up spinning around in really fast circles.

No, it works perfectly if you Buy the app from the market. The 8 bucks is totally worth it, adds trackball mode which eliminates spinning around, and right click works perfectly. My Minecraft experience feels native!

Your opinion on browsing on a tablet (mouseover)

When I got my transformer I immediately felt that browsing on it was a little uncomfortable when compared to the control I have on a desktop computer. I've noticed one poorly executed function was the PC equivalent of a "mouseover" or "hover" function. It made opening hover menus in a browser or controlling a flash video player a bit awkward, although still functional.
I've recently stumbled upon on 2010 article on why a Flash developer believes that flash would not work on the iPad, but many of the points that he makes are very valid given the implementation of flash that we have on our transformers.

I was just wondering if this was something you've all noticed and perhaps if you have your own ideas as to how a mouseover functionality could have been better implemented in android.
Also, I've once tried to bring this up in another topic which ended up getting closed, so let's try to keep that from happening.

I think that a double tap would be a good solution for something like bringing up flash player controls without pausing the video.
What about scrubbing the video? For instance, with youtube you can use your mouse and move it (without clicking) along the progress bar while being shown the exact time in the video that you are currently pointing at. This obviously makes rewinding and fast forwarding much easier on a computer. I suppose on a tablet you would double tap and then drag your finger, as per this implementation?
EDIT: Wow, I'm sorry I totally misunderstood. You actually mean't using two fingers as opposed to double tapping with one.

I'll be brutally honest. You've got what I like to call not-used-to-something-that-is-new syndrome.
I'm sure when the personal computer first came out, people were crying left and right that typing on the computer was uncomfortable compared to the typewriter. In fact, if you go back long enough, I'm sure people were whining left and right that the page turning book format was uncomfortable to read compared to the scrolls. Heck, why stop there? I'm sure writing with ink was really awkward and uncomfortable to those who were used to the chisel and hammer.
The fact of the matter is every time a new technology came up, there would undoubtedly be resistance to the change. I have no doubt that there were arguments against Gutenberg's invention (the printing press).
I say the advantages of the tablet far outweighs the disadvantages. And please don't start arguing that the tablet could never replace your pc. No one is making such claim.

The question here is how to make the "hover" functionality more intuitive.

i think a multitouch or swipe gesture would be the best option.
for example with the mousover menus, if u could quickly swipe across said menu to have it show the options.
not sure if its viable but who knows
or even a double tap. tap once to open the menu, tap again to select an entry or go to the main link

The problem is that a multitouch would register as a zoom function, not a hover function.. Computer analyses aren't good enough to tell the difference between two points of contact with relatively stable distance between them vs two points of contact moving away (because it's sensitive right now..?).

You will find that as more web developers and designers switch to HTML5 and CSS3 (which the stock android browser already supports btw) it will be much more of an experience like a desktop computer. In fact, hover effects implementing CSS3 currently support mouseovers on our transformer. the hover transitions work pretty dang well actually

Click the title of the item in google reader and it opens in xkcd viewer, and there you can click on the cartoon to get the hover-over.

Yeah its clearly not good, I also frequently miss a keyboard with cursor keys to move around in an input field.

How exactly is the "hover" functionality implemented on the transformer with HTML5 and CSS3, in terms of how the user is able to call on the function?

Yeah, I'm trying to encourage someone who's a developer on a web software I use quite often to add the clickhover property to the default theme instead of pure hover. Not only does that enhance browsing on tablets, but it also supports a11y.

yes, mouse-over or the lack of it is a real pain in the ***. I use Opera Mobile and browsing websites that use mouse-over navigation without the dock is really annoying.

This is false. There's nothing magical going on here, a touch UI is only as good as how it's programmed.
Two points of contact with stable distance CAN be discerned from two points moving away. For example a naive method to do this would be to store the last N number of touched coordinates per some time slice in the form of a recency list and then perform some minor arithmetic operations on them to determine the delta and make a reasonable assumption as to whether movement is occurring. It might be harder to discern movements where the quantity is similar to each other but where one quantity is essentially zero movement and the other is any movement, this is not so difficult to do.

[Q] Is the Nook right for me?

I'm close to buying a Nook Simple Touch. These are my criteria and what I'm expecting:
I already have an iPhone. I want the Nook mostly for reading eBooks and viewing lecture slides in class.
I have owned a Palm Zire 71 before. How is the IR touch screen like? I'm not expecting the responsiveness of a capacitive touchscreen. Does it work by detecting pressure like a Palm? Does it have multi-touch? It's not really necessary as long as pan and zoom can function well. Can you annotate on it like on a Palm?

I feel a Nook is good value for money because I actually buy classic novels at 3.50 USD a pop and Project Gutenberg will save me money in the long run. Furthermore, my textbooks (limited to 10% of the content to comply with Australian copyright laws) have been put up online.
Also for viewing lecture slides. I print out 6 PowerPoint slides a page on my B&W laser printer and at that size, the diagrams in the slides are not clear. I only need the touch for zoom and pan. Rather than annotating on my printouts (which can be 6 pages or longer), I could save paper by viewing them on the eReader and taking notes separately on a sheet of paper.
My classmates use iPads or laptops in class. It's hard to navigate slides on a laptop by scrolling. Love the smooth navigation of the iPad but on both devices they struggle to type notes/draw using a capacitive stylus. Not to mention the temptation to browse Facebook/play games on them!

What Android apps run on it after rooting? I'm thinking Chess and simple word-processing apps. Not expecting Angry Birds, but would something like amateur Angry Birds clones (so many of these on iOS e.g. Angry Pig Daddy) work because they have very low framerates?
Can I load files from Dropbox instead of over USB?
Hardware keyboards need to be connected by USB, right? I guess USB headsets won't work because the Nook lacks an audio chip.
Can it be compared to a Palm (albeit with a greyscale eInk screen)? For reading eBooks, browsing the internet in B&W and running simple [Android] apps and simple annotation.
Would the Nook Simple Touch meet my needs?

Technically multitouch is supported with the latest update, but I have yet to see it actually work.
The touch screen is pretty responsive, but a pen won't work; you need something bigger. There's also no film over the screen, and the actual IR beams are just above the screen, so if you want you don't have to touch the actual screen.
As for contrast, the color of the screen when blank is pretty close to white, with just a very slight shade of brown.
The Nook runs Android 2.1, so most apps won't be available, but I use my Nook to take notes in class (high school) using a free office app. Angry birds is available and is pretty playable if you change the orientation and turn off the background from the main menu.
The Dropbox app is in the Market, and I think there's an app that will sync folders on your SDCard (or maybe your Nook's file system) with Dropbox.
I also have a Palm Zire (31?), and I still use it to record homework and for its calendar; haven't found a decent working calendar app yet for my Nook. Maybe I'll just make one sometime.

How do you zoom and pan? By dragging on scroll bars?
I'm more and more impressed!
I'm amazed that Angry Birds is playable! I've seen the YouTube video. Why do you need to change the orientation? To decrease the resolution? How about instead making the app run in a 320 * 480 window like a low-end Android phone?
(Can't post links yet. Search "nook simple touch stylus". It's the Blogspot blog in the first result.) Nice! I'm leaning towards using a paintbrush! Maybe I'll trim the barrel of a fat pen and stick a silicone earplug in there like what he did in the first photo.

Has anyone's Nook ever broke? I'm buying it from someone who's bringing it in to Malaysia from the US. I have to ship it to B&N and B&N will deliver it to a US address, which will forward it to me in Malaysia.
Can you boost the contrast in Android so that similar colours won't have the same shade (look 'flat') when converted to Grayscale?
Does JavaIDEdroid work on a rooted Nook? The site says it seems to run okay on Android 2.1. I just want to use this to do light editing on assignments (I study CompSci). All my Java programs are only command-line based.
ETA: I might have found a good stylus! The rubber tip of Pilot FriXion pens (that are used to erase the ink by friction).

For zoom, I haven't had much luck with it, but the office app I use has a slider for zoom (Kingsoft Office. Terrible, but works). I use GO Keyboard to type, and after installing it to an Android emulator to get to the settings it works well.
I change the orientation so the screen refreshes more than once every two seconds, but it does make trails to be made behind the birds. When a bird jumps while waiting to be launched, it can only be described as a flaming bird.
The Zire 21 was B/W, the 31 is blue and has a color screen. (I have both for some reason)

good for epub. screen is small for detailed slides.

The nook is great for reading ebooks (epub) -- that's what it was designed for. PDF support is very disappointing (IMO). zoom is extremely limited.
This assumes you are using the default app on a stock nook. I'm still working on getting mine to run other apps.
The small screen size might be disappointing for viewing lecture slides.

The nook is pretty fragile. I recommend buying a good case.
The "designed for nook" case in the store looked to me like it would pop open too easily, so I got a Kindle case with a zipper (M-Edge Latitude). It's a tight fit, but it works.
Kindle 4 and Nook Simple Touch have the same H and W dimensions, but the Nook is thicker (11.9 mm vs 8.6 mm)

I just bought my Nook ST yesterday! I love it but I find the ghosting and the blinking refresh annoying and I hope the NoRefresh tweak would fix that.
How do you zoom in on images in the stock app? Can you pan/scroll instead of turning the page? IS there any way to rotate so that PDFs display in landscape mode?
Does highlighting work in PDFs? I can get the text to zoom in but am unable to select the text.
I'm holding off rooting until I get a microSD card. I also don't have a microSD card reader on me at the moment. Can you just write the disk image when the card is in the Nook? I see an external drive show up in Windows Explorer.

Don't write the image to the mSD when it is in the Nook! This will damage your Nook! /bold text
I don't think you can zoom in the stock reader, but when you root you can get a PDF app and use that, and you can force the screen to display in landscape when you need to. Also, you cannot pan in the stock reader, only pages.
As for NoRefresh, that app is advancing by leaps and bounds, and should work well for most apps.

Okay I hear you. I just read the warning in another thread after posting this about potentially bricking the Nook when writing the disk image to the microSD inside.
Is the screen refresh annoying in third-party PDF readers? Would be a shame to lose colour depth to just black and white by using NoRefresh.

Thanks for that recommendation. Calendar Pad is a good replacement for the stock Android Calendar program. Not having a giant SD card image is nice.
Are you aware of a way to enable/disable specific account calendars that are displayed. I can do this on other devices with the stock app, but haven't found an equivalent function in Calendar Pad.

i think NST is just right for you.
I also have iphone and ipad. but they just for game or chatting.
NST is for reading.

Yes, use the stock Calendar application (with giant SDcard image) to select your calendars (menu -> More -> My Calendars). This setting has effect also for Calendar Pad.

Videos vs WMP + Mail + General Thoughs

Hi,
did you notice (perhaps you know why) there is such a massive difference in video playback by those 2 apps.
I have downloaded k-lite codecs (dont know if this is a good choice for W8 but) and under WMP I got no issues, dvd rip, mkv (720p) runs smoothly - no problem (stream form NAS storage). Under Videos app in Modern UI dvd rip (same file, same NAS) was not watchable. I had sound but move turned into still, refreshed every 6-10 s.
Also, built in Mail app (even compared to old Outlook Express or Live Mail) is terrible.
General thoughts.
System is great, I like everything, even Modern UI makes sense, but (there always is a "but")
Microsoft should treat Modern UI as an optional thing. I mean for all devices with touch screen it does make sense. It completes the UI we can use desktop when we want to or have a keyboard attached but when not... Modern UI is great help
Again, for traditional laptops/desktop it makes no sense. I would make it optional to use with an option to switch it of completely.
When one is using mouse and keyboard so far I did not notice any gains from Modern UI.

I have a laptop, and I just treat the modern ui as a super functional start menu. It can do everything the old start menu can, and I use apps that can run in the background, like weather, news, messenger, and iHeartRadio/music. With a simple swipe to the right on my trackpad I can easily switch between them.
I know that the majority of apps for the modern ui are designed to be used as primary applications to get stuff done, but that doesn't work on a full computer. Instead I just ignore that and realize that tablets and pcs have the same app store.

BTW: Is WMP working for you in the background when you move on to Modern UI/Start screen?
I have Win7 right now booted (and HDD with W8 is unplugged) but I think I have noticed something about it...
Same with streaming movie on web site... if you go to do something else I think it stops - got to check it again.

I understand what you say.. still on traditional desktop with mouse it seems to me that just having Desktop mode + traditional start would be more efficient.
I see the problem MS had... "If we leave Metro UI out of desktops and laptops (or leave it as an option) how do we make users buy Metro apps?". But I guess this is wrong way of thinking.
If you will own a touch screen device with W8 and you boy stuff it should appear on all your devices (right) [btw: will Metro apps show up on WP8 as well???] , so it would be on "Desktop device" redy to use if one will want to do so.
But if you mainly work in desktop mode on Desktop device why would you want/need to use any Metro app anyway/ in the first place/at all?
Even as it is ppl. will not use it in other way than start.

side stepping the paid/free differences
The problem with wifi for this is that TCP sucks big time! there is so much redundancy built in for error checking that for anything like this, the slightest hiccup can just make it feel laggy and generally crap compared to using the real thing., ive tried to use similar programs for years and they all just annoy the buggery out of me after a while
Bluetooth offers a better solution but would have limited range and still isn't perfect, also bare in mind that everything under the sun uses 2.4GHz meaning a next door neighbours cordless phone can give you a headache too.
its just food for thought, perhaps you may live in a faraday cage and have no issues with interference, dropped packets and don't mind the slight lag that cant be removed, but not everyone is in such a fortunate position.
a Bluetooth option would be cool and of course a WP version for the grown ups

I just gave the Free "try it out app" a whirl.
I have an older laptop with non-multi touch touchpad so I was really excited about this app.
I have to echo the request for a bluetooth version of the app as well, there was definitely some odd lag going on ...
... But I can't be sure the lag wasn't being caused by the cascade of "This feature is only available in the paid version" messages I was getting.
Look, I think this app could be awesome, and I would happily pay for it, if I thought that it would work well enough to use daily. However, the experience on the Free app is really bad due to the restrictions. I understand not wanting to give away your work for free, but I think that the Free app paints a very unflattering picture of what the Full Version might be.
You may want to consider re-vamping the Free version, allowing for fewer restrictions or going to a 30 day trial, or just look at the code for how it displays the nag-message.
I'm not trying to be mean or rude, I think its a great idea, but when I say "cascade" of nag-messages I am being literal. There was a backlog of messages after closing the app so that for the next minute and a half I had "This feature ..." flashing on my home screen even after closing the app.

I just gave the paid version a try and I'm not having any lag. It's very smooth. I haven't had a chance to dig too deeply into it, but so far it's very nice.
Anyway, whatever you do, don't drop the ball on this. Routinely I buy a paid app from a dev here and the development goes stagnant. There's a ton of potential for this app, please keep going!

Look, I think this app could be awesome, and I would happily pay for it, if I thought that it would work well enough to use daily. However, the experience on the Free app is really bad due to the restrictions. I understand not wanting to give away your work for free, but I think that the Free app paints a very unflattering picture of what the Full Version might be.
You may want to consider re-vamping the Free version, allowing for fewer restrictions or going to a 30 day trial, or just look at the code for how it displays the nag-message.
