30 minute Galaxy S3 glass replacement *redneck method* - Galaxy S III General

So I dropped my Sprint Galaxy S3 last week and shattered the glass so I did the logical thing anyone would do without a warranty and got a Galaxy Note 2. Since I have Balls of Steel™ I opted not to waste 3 hours of my life (by carefully prying away with proper tools) and took a knife straight to my S3 (literally).

Very informative, thanks!

so is there any sort of water resistance?

I have read rumors the Note 4 is not water resistant certified but that at least the boards inside have a similar type of coating as the s5. Has anybody heard any new information about this?

It is not water resistant with or without nanocoating protectiong, but it would be cool if the note had it.
They're designed to resist downpour for at least like ten minutes

The Note 4? I'd like to see a source for that information.
theres not necessarily water resistancy going on, but just like my note (which i use under the rain) it can survive a splash here and there. Unless if you plan on dropping your phone into an ocean for long period of time/toilet/swim with it...i doubt should worry
My friend got caught in a heavy rain while biking, his Note 3 in pants pocket. Afterwords it didn't boot up for 3 days, then it dried out to boot but his home button was shorted so he still couldn't use it at all. After another 2 days in rice it finally started working again with no visible long lasting damage, but his water exposure was minimal, it didn't even trip water sensors on the battery nor phone (he claims only bottom part, where USB port is, got wet.). I don't think any phone is safe when exposed to water, unless properly sealed inside, like GS5. My biggest complain about Note 4 is lack of waterproofing.
Not officially, but we'll have to wait for teardowns to see if any water resistance is built in.
The Galaxy Alpha is not IP certified but teardowns found many of the same gaskets used on the S5 throughout it. Either Samsung couldn't get it completely protected or they gave up to maintain size. But it's better than non-S5 Samsung phones due to the partial protection.

[Q] Badly scratched screen

Hey all,
So I've learned the hard way that gorilla glass is not very good at resisting scratches. My new note 4 has some pretty long scratch marks along the screen and my phone has always been in my empty pocket.
Anyway, the screen protector finally arrived and this may go some way to hide the visible scratches, however based on the galaxy note 3, can the glass on these phones be replaced? And would Samsung charge the earth for such a thing to be done?
Regards
Yeah it is possible. I have done it for the note 3. Here is a video explaining the process: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HwrSdrySqec. It is very important if you try to replace just the glass to take your time as to not break the screen. Good luck.
If you take it to Samsung they replace the entire display and will probably cost around $300.

I don't know which carrier you are using, but if you have the insurance, I would simply use it, typically its $50 bucks or so, atleast in my experience. I fully intend to use it myself if anything happens, even so far as loosing warranty support on the device for playing with it, i'd run over it with a car and get a refurb before anything.

Cracked Note 4 screen.

Hey guys.
So after just a week of getting this lovely note 4 the phone fell from pocket about a feet or 2 on a ceramic floor and obtained a threadline crack horizontally across the screen. The digitizer is fine and the phone is totally usable, however i am tempted to change the upper glass covering. Iv done some research and couldn't find any detailed process to do that on youtube, though i read somewhere that it's risky to replace just the glass without digitizer. So has anyone gone through this process before? What are the risks? I am planning to buy d glass from aliexpress. ..thanks
So I'm in the same boat as you now...was hoping you were successful and any pointers/tips and what glass did you get? I've taken the glass off and replaced it on a Note 2 so somewhat familiar with the process.
Well i think i have to tell you some bad news guys. Samsung changed the way they produce displays. Back in the day S1-S4 N1-N3 screens came with a frame attatched on em (official parts that is) but now since the S5 and N4 its only the panel itself, touchscreen+Amoled panel glued together and it's like 3mm thick. So you can imagine how difficult it is to replace em seperatly.
I think it's for the best to leave it like this or if you have the money replace the screen completly.
I myself work in a phone/tablet repair shop so if ur from the Netherlands/Belguim you can stop by and it's fixed in ~30 minutes.

Want to buy have hesitations because of cracking , help !

I could swear i picked the right forum (Questions & Answers) , seems i didn't , someone delete this thread . i will repost !
Help me out here bro's .. for a whole week i have watched hundreds of reviews and drop tests etc , i like the S7 Edge but i am terrified of that glass screen on the front side cracking by itself without drops acording to many people on the web, i normally use cases on all my phones but with this model i'm afraid that its edge will be easy to crack if dropped in a certain position with a case , it is not a cheap phone and if i pay this much i want to be sure that is a bit tough and won't have to be in service centers a hundred times , what are your experiences with it , i am stressing between S7 Edge and the HTC 10 full metal body and its resistance Thanks.
I had same hesitations as you have even with a spigen tough armor case. I have broken a S6 edge plus in past and vowed not to buy a edge phone. Stayed long time with My Note4, the longest phone i have ever kept for 2 years.
S7 Edge is fragile. and if u are not careful yes you will break the screen if u have fumbling hands like me. I have bought a Otterbox Defender case for my s7 edge. it looks bigger, feels heavy, touch might not be as smooth as one without a case
The best reason for otterbox defender was built in screen protector, its not glass mind you but work fine. I dropped my phone from around 4ft height but not even a single scratch on the case or phone...
That is the only case i use most of the time , although i have 4 more like Spigen Tough Armor, and the Original flip cover, but im not a fan of flipcovers, not my taste. I also have Samsung Accidental Warranty replacment for screen 1 time if i break it
The warranty plus the otterbox for me was the only combo that makes me feel safe.
Many would disagree and say they think its best not to use screen protector and have the best of edge screen. But a little compromise makes me feel comfortable to throw around my phone on table , in car , on bed etc without worrying that i might break it.
So in the end other cases can give u Semi type protection. but be careful as if it falls on floor u will surely damage the phone... I have no regrets . amazing phone , killer camera and screen on time. i get around 6 to 7 hours screen on time mostly
Dropped my phone multiple times from different heights. Thank God UAG saves my phone.

So far not even a scratch on my s7 edge. Even after like 2-3 drops maybe. It is a really durable phone. Everything is nice and solid. Best phone I had so far. Even Note 4 had a unbreakable glass, as well as Galaxy S6. But S7 Edge has the best glass out of them all.
i have been using a Spigen Crystal Shell on my S7 edge since day 1. Brilliant protection. Haven't dropped the phone thankfully yet but the crystal shell has these air cushion bumps that are pronounced on all 4 corners.
i have mine in a vrsdesign case, got it from amazon for under £10, and with my job im constantly climbing in /out on top and under machines, and mines hasnt broke i think theyre more durable than people think, just look after it properly, too many people are careless with devices these days

It wasn't deleted. it was moved to the Q&A forum, where it should have been posted

I'll close it, and leave this one open. But I will also move this one to Q&A.
As for the screen glass, it doesn't crack on it's own. It never has, and never will.
If you worry about that, you may as well not buy any phone in case it smashes.
I've never had a screen protector or case on any of my flagship smartphones, for the last 10 years or so, and never had a smashed screen.
I've even dropped my S7E a few times onto concrete, and barely left a mark.
Mine broke on its own. but don't worry, its only $260 to replace it by samsuck and it will no longer be water resistant.
On it's own?
Sorry but I just can't see how that would ever happen with Gorilla Glass 4.
My S7 Edge Lens cover broke on its own. And the display cracked on the edge recently. Still working perfectly as the shattered pieces are held together by the ScreenGuard - Best ScreenGuard by GadgetzShield.
They don't break in their own unless you put pressure on the screens or your phone is faulty and overheating. Does mine a few times with a Spigen case and it's all good. Maybe there are imperfections in the glass as edge screens are not perfectly flat and hard to make. Each one is unique.

Yes. The Display edge cracked on fall. The camera lens cover is fragile.
It is doubtful that you need another person telling you that the phone is worthwhile, but I'm going to anyway
As mentioned previously, Gorilla Glass 4 is very durable. NO phone is meant to be dropped without consequence, save for maybe the "Active" series. That said, I just received my Spigen Neo Hybrid Crystal case, and I threw on a Skinomi tech skin (for cases, not full coverage).
I too watched a ton of videos, looked at a lot of case reviews, etc. Many of which showed shattered backs, cracks, etc. I'm extremely careful with my devices because I believe in only buying them once. I'm not careless enough to drop my phone from 20 feet, or something ridiculous like that. If you are a normal person, who takes care of their electronics, the demise of this phone need not be feared.
I have a s7 edge and my only concern is that at some point Samsung will decide that it will not update the software any more or bring software features which will come to the newer devices. The hardware is great. The update policy is bad and it makes you feel like you have an old device even if the hardware is perfectly fine.

Cracked back screen using the Gear VR?

I have had my S7 edge for a bit over a year and like it (Not as much as the Note 7 that it replaced, but such is life and exploding batteries.) Anyways, I have used the Gear VR with my S7 edge in that year with no issues UNTIL today. After I was done using it. I removed it from my face/head and saw that the back glass was shattered . The front screen glass is fine so far, no cracks or shatters, but the back looks like a spiderweb. Has this happened to anyone else using the Gear VR?
I dont have insurance on the phone and I truly believe this is a design flaw by Samsung. Where the phone clips into the VR, puts tremendous pressure on the back screen and it just must have finally given in. I am hoping that some others have experienced this and have held Samsung to account for this defect. I patiently await your responses!
