So I've got my N7, been hyped up about OTG (since my SGS does not support it), so far I havent managed to get the basic stuff working (mouse, keyboard).
What I tried:
All stock ROMs, from 4.1.1 to 4.2.1
CM10 stable, cm10 nightlies
Nexus 7 as a device works without a hitch, just no OTG at the moment.
I measured the voltage output when OTG cable is connected and it was 0V. Friend said it should output something. I tried powered USB hub(the N7 did not charge), this time, my mouse LED lighted up, but there was no cursor on the screen, same with keyboard, when entering text input mode, the on-screen keyboard shows up.
The OTG cable was made, connecting the 5th pin to the GND, as the exterior cases of the connector aswell. (edit: I can add that this OTG cable was a from a friend, where it worked on his device, Sony something, codename is coconout)
Tommorow I will go to the store where they sell OTG cables (15eur) and I'll try that one. Meanwhile I ordered two 90° OTG cables for 3eur a piece.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, as this is getting me really frustrated.
Thanks again!
are you rooted and using stickmount??? i tried using a mouse on mine and it works fine for me

Could you please tell me which ROM and kernel are you exactly on? I will go to a store and try a new OTG cable with a "dumb" mouse (Logitech NX50).
I tried USB host diagnostics, screenshot below. Stock 4.2.1 rooted with a faux123 kernel which claims OTG support.

I'm wondering if anyone would know if it would be possible to connect an adapter to a PS3 controller that would allow it to be plugged into the Nexus 7 using the normal USB cable for the controller and then would the controller be functional within games.
If it can be connected then would it also be possible to pair the controller so that it can be used over Bluetooth?
I know connecting a PS3 controller to a Transformer tablet with a keyboard dock allows pairing but I am curious if it would work with a Nexus 7 using an adapter.

I don't think normal regular ps3 controller do anything to ur N7 with USB cable,, just like it won't do any to the computer.

I'm pretty confident that it wouldn't. However, if you root and download an application from Google Play it will work. (Sixaxis controller)
It works just fine with a ps3 controller plugged via USB and an OTG cable. You can even navigate the home screen with it.
I can post a video if people want to see it.

Could you provide me to a link with a suitable OTG cable for this?
Also will my Nexus 7 have to be rooted?

is that out of the box?
I remember it is plug and play with windows and I did that and though it was so cool when I discovered that 2 years ago
I'm using the Xoom camera connection kit cable. Which is just a fancy name for an otg cable.
It works just fine on stock. No apps, no mods, just works natively. Buttons can also be used to navigate.
Here's an Amazon link to the cable. http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Connection-MOTOROLA-Packaging-89454N/dp/B004UAG6WC

So it has to be an OTG cable then?
I have purchased an USB A male/female adapter and tried connecting the controller cable and the Nexus 7 cable together through the adapter and nothing happened.
Do you have any idea to why that may not have worked?
Just get sixaxis controller from the play store.

Yes I believe it does have to be an OTG cable.
Also, it doesn't work for all games. I think the game has to have an external controller option. For example the controller doesn't work for Final Fantasy III but works for GTA III and the emulators.

Hello guys
I have Nexus media importer (not rooted) and when i connect usb stick its working fine but when i connect my external hdd WD 320gb its not working. Anyone knows what could be the problem ? maybe lack of power ? waiting for answers :highfive:
You can connect only device with own power source...
It is possible to use a hub with otg, I have connected a kboard and mouse through a basic 4 port hub as a tester. You should be able to use a powered hub to drive your external HD
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
So which do you think is the problem?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Both the other posters indicated it is likely a power problem. But, not all external HD's will work, powered or not. My WD 750Gb My Passport HD won't mount even powered.
It is indeed a power problem. My usb 2.0 based wd1600 did the same. Since it does not have its own power source, i wired in 5 volts to its usb cable and that got me up and going. There are some usb 3.0 ext hdds that dont need external power to work though. Tassadar got one and said it runs fine with just the power provided by the n7. So you have 3 options. 1. Use an hdd with ext power. 2. Wire in 5 volts to the cable. 3. Purchase an hdd which the n7 can power.

How can I wire 5v power? You mean by hub with power input?

No. I actually spliced a 5 volt power adapter directly into the hdds usb cable (red and black wires). A little solder and a few heatshrinks are priceless.
I was going to upload a pic of the cord, but uploading anything with the xda app is beyond retarded anymore. Startimg to regret paying for the premium. For the greatest android site on the web, it is a shame that their app stinks and riddled with bugs. Kinda ironic.

hello guys well i have a nexus 7 that i set up in my car everything working perfect but i cant get the battery to "ac charge" im using this cable
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Usb-type-A-...G-Micro-USB-female-power-supply-/310680595889
the issue is not in the charger because the charger im using when connect to the tablet directly does achieve ac charging but when i plug in the above splitter it looses it, if the cable is meant to separate data from power than why is this happening? how can i get "ac power" or fast charging, I currently have everything connect to a toggle switch that i leave on over night, and i really is not a big deal but i noticed the other day with the navigation on watching videos that the battery is still draining.. using timur kernel
thanks in advance
its obviously the splitter, from the looks of the cable on the micro usb socket its to thin to take the power?
You need to state more info. What kernel? Rom? Only a specialized kernel will allow otg host mode charging.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium
If you are completely stock, the tablet will not charge while it is in Host Mode with the OTG cable attached. It can be done with a special kernel, though.
Yup, thats what I said.
I can almost guarantee it is your otg cable, get a samsung compatible otg with power cable.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-Host-OTG-Cable-W-Micro-USB-power-for-Samsung-N5100-i9300-i9500-N7100-/130917631296?pt=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cables_Adapters&hash=item1e7b4c8540
I have a car install running Timurs usbrom (which I recommend over just his kernel) and its the one Im using without issue.
It is because the otg cable does not have the data cables in the powered end that is split off. They need to be shorted to get full AC charging but it is impossible with an Otg cable as it would not work for any data.

So what you are saying if im understanding correctly is to achieve true ac charging you have to utilize all 4 cables in the usb passage?

You need to short both the data pins together for AC charging. But if you do that, OTG is gone.

You are just using the kernel, usbrom is his full cm10.1 based custom rom. The proper otg cables need to have pins 4 and 5 (ground) together on the tablet micro usb end to activate the ofg and power, that why you need the special cable.Your cable only power the device on the usb end not the tablet,it says no device charging in the description.
Also with Timurs kernel or rom the data wire cross isnt needed,or the otg devices wouldnt work.

Does anyone know if this is possible on our phones?
I know otg works but never had a cable where you could charge too
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
It should work since it's not different from charging on PC and copy files at the same time. Just need a cable with a split end; one socket for the charger and one for the OTG device.

I just tried it and it doesn't work. My phone won't charge at all using the split OTG cable, with OR without a usb device plugged in.
Tried every combination of plugging and unplugging things that I could think of, and no-go.
I guess it's possible that my split cable could be the problem, but this worked just fine on my GNex, so I highly doubt it.
Dang, it will be awhile before I get the OTG cable, also waiting for the N3 DE. Can anyone second this?

I agree. Tested with this cable, and it's a no go. Works without a single issue on my Gnex as well.
I'm leaning towards kernel compatibility.
Edit: Something that it does differently on the Note 3 is that it immediately gives a notification stating that a usb device is connected as soon as I plug it in, even without a usb drive being attached. While still connected, attaching a usb drive works perfectly.
Thanks, that's a show stopper to watch movies from a USB HD. Maybe a Samsung accessory cable will work; sucks for those already having one though.

I have a nexus 7 WiFi 16 gig refurbished from wallmart. Using for a car install, tried 3 different otg cables confirmed working on n7 2013 and made my own cable with external power and no go. Host mode will not trigger. No mouse, USB ,SD........ I get no notification that host mode is entered. Tried USB ROM, vanir, cm11, bs harmony, stock, every kernel. Still get nothing. Any ideas? Have power and volume soldered to some momentary switches. Any ideas I was thinking of trying to trigger host by shorting the pins on the tablet itself! Bad idea? All connections in the tablet look good.I am at a loss. Any suggestions are appreciated!!

What you are looking for is a kernel that provides simultaneous otg/host mode charging. Unfortunately, if you are running a rom newer than 4.2.2, you cant get it. All kernels that gave this capability were based on the work by Timur. He left that scene and never brought the hack to 4.3 +. If you install a 4.2.2 rom, you can still do it. If you google "Timur kernel" it will take you to his rootzwiki thread. He has a standalone kernel, or an entire rom dedicated to your very situation. Most people on the thread are car install users. Tons of great info there.
To the reply above me, the op is referring to being able to mount otg and charge at the same time, so stickmount would do no good.

No, not a stock feature. Exactly how are you charging and mounting otg simultaneously, cable wise?

I use a generic OTG cable i got for like 5 bucks (it doesn't supply any kind of power). Mouse, gamepad and keyboards works as soon as i connect them. For drives and SD cards, i use Nexus Media Importer. All in stock ROM and kernel (4.4.2), without using root.
The op is referring to charging the N7, and connecting otg devices at the same time. The reason his otg is not working is because he connected the charging circuit first, which blocks host mode (otg functionality) from registering. The same happens if otg is hooked first, charging will not occur. It takes a kernel with those certain abilities to use otg and charge the n7 at the same time (host mode charging). Likewise, it takes a special cord, which has either 2 male usb and one female, or 1 micro usb, 1 male usb, and 1 female usb. Everything you need to know about this is here http://mehrvarz.github.io/usb-host-mode-power-management-nexus7/

I have tried usb rom and stick mount, and nexus medis importer ect...... my problem is no usb host at all. not even a usb mouse. i have tried diffrent roms and kernels. i think maybe a hardware problem. i made my own usb host cable it works with my n7 2013 note 3 , but not my 2012 n7. nothing does. i also bought a few cables from amazon, no go. the tablet doesnt enter host mode. i tried usb diagostic app from chainfire. support is the for host in the kenels but host mode will not trigger.. just tring to see if anyone had similar issue and found a fix.. thanks for the suggestions.. kang-aroo kernel has timurs patches synced for 4.4.2 so does bricked and m kernel. OTG and charging IS NOT my issue, its no host at all. tablet will not recognize anything i plug in with external power or without....
As i thought the tablet was defective, recieved my new one no problems with usb host......
Awesome, glad you got it replaced. I use usb host mode charging, so I know how valuable it is. But, I am glad you posted your issue, because I was unaware of the existance of the kang-aroo kernel till you mentioned it. Running it on all 4 roms on my N7, and really happy with it.

Kangaroo is a great kernel , try oxydo has the same features but it also has doubletap2wake and s2w it's not enabled by default but trickster mod will turn it on or by editing a few files in the sys folder. In the kangaroo thread there is a manager app like USB rom has for a car install. Works on both kernels. Are you using multirom. I haven't tried it yet. Any issues?
Been using multirom since it was released over a year ago, and never had an issue. I cant imagine my N7 without it.
