I'm wondering if anyone would know if it would be possible to connect an adapter to a PS3 controller that would allow it to be plugged into the Nexus 7 using the normal USB cable for the controller and then would the controller be functional within games.
If it can be connected then would it also be possible to pair the controller so that it can be used over Bluetooth?
I know connecting a PS3 controller to a Transformer tablet with a keyboard dock allows pairing but I am curious if it would work with a Nexus 7 using an adapter.

I'm pretty confident that it wouldn't. However, if you root and download an application from Google Play it will work. (Sixaxis controller)
It works just fine with a ps3 controller plugged via USB and an OTG cable. You can even navigate the home screen with it.
I can post a video if people want to see it.

Could you provide me to a link with a suitable OTG cable for this?
Also will my Nexus 7 have to be rooted?

is that out of the box?
I remember it is plug and play with windows and I did that and though it was so cool when I discovered that 2 years ago
I'm using the Xoom camera connection kit cable. Which is just a fancy name for an otg cable.
It works just fine on stock. No apps, no mods, just works natively. Buttons can also be used to navigate.
Here's an Amazon link to the cable. http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Connection-MOTOROLA-Packaging-89454N/dp/B004UAG6WC

So it has to be an OTG cable then?
I have purchased an USB A male/female adapter and tried connecting the controller cable and the Nexus 7 cable together through the adapter and nothing happened.
Do you have any idea to why that may not have worked?
Just get sixaxis controller from the play store.

Yes I believe it does have to be an OTG cable.
Also, it doesn't work for all games. I think the game has to have an external controller option. For example the controller doesn't work for Final Fantasy III but works for GTA III and the emulators.

I have an Acer iconia a500, a rca television, and a micro hdmi cable. After many failures i took my iconia to bestbuy, where they successfully connected my tablet to a lg tv with full mirroring. My tv's hdmi input is working properly, (tested by a xbox connected with an hdmi cable). After conencting the cable from my iconia to the rca tv the message unusable signal remains on the screen. Whats the problem?
Thanks for your help!
I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say that the RCA unit didn't support the a500 native resolution. I wonder if there is a build.prop resolution hack for this.
Are you rommed and rooted?

Did the bestbuy guys used your cable? Try different cable or your original cable to another tv.

I tried to have both the iconia and the tv off, connect the cord to both ends, and turn both on . is that what was supposed to work?
Yes that's what is suggested from vendors.

rca and nvidia
This is going to sound stupid.but I had a 42 inch RCA LCD TV.when i would try to connect my nvidia graphics laptop to the TV same issue.even tried a desktop.using the VGA port.would not work.I added a old sis.video adaptor to the computer.it connected right away.there was a web site I found back then about this.
I still do not understand why it was such a issue.but you are having the same as I had forget about it.I did send a report to nvidia and RCA.but no response.
My tab connects to both my TVs now I gave the RCA to my mother and got a Sanyo.its a OK 47 inch.my other is a 40 inch Samsung led and it Rocks can connect anything play videos on the tab to TV across wifi.as well as HDMI my tab will also use a Samsung wifi remote app to control the TV.
Sorry for your luck if you figure it out I would love to know what I was doing wrong.
Thanks good luck erica
I thought a play station 3 one would work, but i read you have to be rooted? Then I read a wired xbox 360 controller will work? What works for sure? Thanks

You only have to be rooted if you want to use the ps3 control wirelessly. Otherwise on stock, buy a USB OTG cable and plug the control in.

Ok will a generic ps3 controller work? People said the knock off brands wont work but maybe their talking about wireless ones only?

It may or may not. Hook it up and see. It should see it as a gamepad. Bout the wireless, yes if its a knock off it won't connect wirelessly with the six axis controller app.

i've tested the OTG cable with the official Dual Shock 3 controller, and some third-party wired controller- i think Nyko?
both worked on stock.
NYKO PLAY PAD PRO $40.00 at your local GameStop once you buy it go to GPLAY and download the app PLAYGROUND and sync it with your games GOD BLESS it works great on my stock NEXUS7

Hello guys
I have Nexus media importer (not rooted) and when i connect usb stick its working fine but when i connect my external hdd WD 320gb its not working. Anyone knows what could be the problem ? maybe lack of power ? waiting for answers :highfive:
You can connect only device with own power source...
It is possible to use a hub with otg, I have connected a kboard and mouse through a basic 4 port hub as a tester. You should be able to use a powered hub to drive your external HD
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
So which do you think is the problem?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Both the other posters indicated it is likely a power problem. But, not all external HD's will work, powered or not. My WD 750Gb My Passport HD won't mount even powered.
It is indeed a power problem. My usb 2.0 based wd1600 did the same. Since it does not have its own power source, i wired in 5 volts to its usb cable and that got me up and going. There are some usb 3.0 ext hdds that dont need external power to work though. Tassadar got one and said it runs fine with just the power provided by the n7. So you have 3 options. 1. Use an hdd with ext power. 2. Wire in 5 volts to the cable. 3. Purchase an hdd which the n7 can power.

How can I wire 5v power? You mean by hub with power input?

No. I actually spliced a 5 volt power adapter directly into the hdds usb cable (red and black wires). A little solder and a few heatshrinks are priceless.
I was going to upload a pic of the cord, but uploading anything with the xda app is beyond retarded anymore. Startimg to regret paying for the premium. For the greatest android site on the web, it is a shame that their app stinks and riddled with bugs. Kinda ironic.

So, now that we have achieved OTG, does anybody know of a self powered usb controller? For example like a usb NES controller with a battery inside. Mods if this should be in the Q and As then feel free to move this thread.

PS3, Xbox and Wii controllers.
I figured how to use my PS3 controller to play games on my N7 but I haven't tried it on my N4. Besides, it's too small to play with a controller.
Why not just get rid of the wire and use Bluetooth?

I have android 4.2 with the USB OTG kernel r165. Usb storage drives, mouse/keyboard and gamepads work however im trying to get a RD9700 ethernet adapter to work with no success
From what ive read the RD9700 is supported on android (albeit at usb1.1 speeds) and it should be as simple as turning wifi off, plugging it in and under settings a new 'ethernet' tab will show up. It doesnt, nor does doing a 'netcfg' in terminal emulator show any 'eth0' adapters.
Has anyone else tried an ethernet adapter? Is there some reason why it wont work on the Nexus4?

Hi, I'm wondering about this too. I got it to work on my Note 2 by compiling the kernel modules and the using 'insmod' to load them each time I needed to. I am thinking of changing to a Nexus 5 when they arrive, but USB ethernet is a must for me. Works out of the box on my N7, but sounds like it needs some work for the smaller nexus.
