[Q] Nexus 7 Battery Drain by Google Play Store - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since yesterday I've been trying to get my Nexus 7 to stop draining its battery at a high rate. I notice that the Google Play Store is being reported to be the top battery user which doesn't make any sense to me. Attaching a screen capture. Is there anyone else having this problem and hopefully figured out how to fix it?

I'm having battery issues but not from Google play store

I would try going to settings/apps/then slide over to "running apps", click on play store.....clear cache and maybe data and then stop. Reboot and try again. Cant hurt to try. Good luck.

I uninstalled 3 apps I installed recently and my Nexus 7 is now working perfectly again. GREAT actually. Hanging on to battery charge very well.

This is true! I left buzzfeed on in the background and it took 25% of my battery life in 1 hour. It used more battery life than my pandora app. I couldn't quite figue that out.

Google services using battery

Hey guys, I just noticed that Google services has been using up a good deal of battery for the past few days... My autosync is off, gps off but still has it using up a fifth of my battery.. Anyone else have similar problems?

I have noticed that even in flight mode and screen off, there is a significant amount of battery drain (i saw 20% less in 6 hrs). With previews phone.. would be 2 to 5 %. I think that the key would be to underclock it in iddle mode
Do you have Google Now and maps location reporting enabled? Those two are major battery hogs.

This worked for me and a friend. Go to Application manager then Google Play services and click uninstall updates. After uninstalling launch Hangouts. It will tell you that you need to update at which point do so. Hope that helps you out like it did me.
I am willing to bet these drains all occur after Google app updates? It seems that most Google apps want to eat battery the first cycle after they were updated. What I have noticed though, is that even though the "battery" stats report Google services as using a lot of percentage, the actually time the phone takes before it needs charged is about the same as when battery stats doesn't report Google services as eating battery.
So, see if "Google services" or Maps or any other Google app doesn't settle down after a cycle and also check to see if it really is shortening the time your phone needs between charges. I suspect it might just be temporary or maybe reported to the phone wrong.
Except for Google Music, freeze it, it will eat your data.
i uninstalled the play services update, and i disabled location services..seems to be fine now. ill turn it back on after a while to see if problem is caused by updates.

Started seeing this a day or so ago out of the blue. Weird that we're all like a month apart. Still happening to you two?
I'm also stock 4.3 (JWR66Y)
Sorry if this reads as being short or frantic; just tired. ;]
Cheers.
Cacheupdateservice wakelock for me was caused by wallet. Also check to see you dont have anything related frozen or disabled in startup.

Anyone else have suggestions? Its killing my battery. No wallet installed, I uninstalled Keep thinking it may be that but it wasnt. I'm at a loss here.
Did you mess with startup services?

Had this issue on my G2. After much frustration, i ended up uninstalling google play services with titanium backup, then reinstalling them. To reinstall them, I uninstalled a google play app (google play music in my case) and reinstalled it. The play store then had me install google play services from there.

What exactly does that do?

Onmy side, he issue was caused by a profile manager (PhoneWeaver) and the usage of a location based profile that was constantly checking whether the phone is in the relevant location. I deleted this profile, restarted the phone and then everything seemed to be normal again.

Cache Update Service not letting phone deep sleep

It is a Google service and I have disabled location services and Google Now. Does not seem to make a difference. I have looked everywhere and have come up with nothing. I have the phone set up basically the same apps as my N4 and my Nexus is crushing my G2 in battery life. Any ideas would be great on what is causing this.

I am using better battery stats and it is partial wake lock I guess I did not bother looking at the overall usage. I am trying a few more things and will report back later.

add me to the list of people this is driving nutzo.
Question, when you go to google sync under settings/accounts and sync, does it show that 'sync is not available at this time?'
I wonder if that could be causing it?
I am waiting for my case to make it my daily driver but last night I tinkered and went and set up all my Google apps and changed my Google plus photo to only upload on charger. When I turned it off it was deep sleeping and and that wake lock was no where to be found. If anyone wants to try this and see if it helps.

Google Play Books sucking Battery

I just recently purchased a Nexus 7 and received it a couple days ago and have been loving it. Today, just looking at the battery section I noticed that Google Play Books is sucking down my battery at 56% which is interesting since I've never even opened the app. Is there anyway to stop or prevent this? I am unlocked and rooted on the stock rom. Thanks!

I've got the same thing, hopefully the 4.4.3 update will fix it...:fingers-crossed:
If you don't use the app, its safe to uninstall.
So for reference of anybody else having the same issue, I disabled Play Books in the settings and uninstalled. After restarting my device the app reinstalled and enabled itself but I am no longer having the issue of it sucking up my battery.
