[Solved] Windows unable to install MTP driver

Hello guys!
I have already read some topics on this forum but it is my first message.
As indicated in the title, I cannot connect my Nexus 4 on my computer using MTP. This computer is running Windows 8.1 Update 1. So far I have tried every method I have seen on the web so I am a little bit desperate.
I have tried to plug my device on other computers and it was automatically detected on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 Update 1 and Ubuntu 14.04.
On my computer, as it does not auto-configure MTP I have tried to install ADB drivers, hoping it would help me. Universal ADB drivers, Naked Drivers and drivers from the SDK didn't changed anything. I also tried changing USB port.
It always recognised my phone as a "Nexus 4" in the "Other devices" section of the Device Manager (I do not have "Android Device" section), except in when MTP + debugging are activated. Then I have both "Nexus 4" and "MTP", in "Other devices" section.
It does not work in PTP mode either and I also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Nexus Root Toolkit, even if I do not see how it can help...
One last point: I have the "connected as multimedia device" notification on my Nexus 4 when MTP is activated, even if it's not recognised by Windows.
Do you have any idea of what I can do?

I have already tried to follow this guide, it just helped me to install ADB drivers but I still don't have access to the content of my Nexus from my computer. I just tried it again, just in case. No changes

Last time I had such an issue: I uninstalled the drivers using Device Manager, then installed the drivers from that guide, plugged in my phone and it worked..

2. developer option.. if you have not enabled developer option then you wouldnt have enabled USB debugging. so skip this
3. Connect your nexus to PC-->Go to Control panel-->device manager
you will see something like Android adb in device manager
Right Click and click "Update device Software"
Click "Browse your Computer for driver Software"
Click "Let me Pick from a list of device drivers on my Computer"
Click Next, for the device list shown.

Yes, I saw it worked for a lot of people, for what I have read, but it seems that I am not that lucky
When picking from the list, I tried from the Android Device section and it displays "Unable to find any drivers for this device". Same Results in “Mobile devices”.
When I try “Show all devices”, I have a lot of possibilities. I just tried “MTP Device” from both “Standard MTP-Compliant Device” and “Standard MTP-Compliant devices” sections, and it displayed “The install class is not present or is invalid”
Am I cursed?
I was wondering, is it possible that the problem is coming from my hardware? Or its drivers? (Those for the motherboard maybe?)

I had the N version of Windows 8.1, mainly to avoid useless software like Windows Media Player, and it was the exact problem.

[Q] ADB drivers not working

Hello. Im new to the Nexus 10. I downloaded skipsoft Android toolkit, installed adb drivers in the package and rooted the Nexus and installed recovery..it was easy using the toolkit. So the ADB drivers must have worked- at least in the environment it is used in to do these things. But these drivers dont work to transfer files between the nexus and the computer running winxp. I have USB debugging and PTP, have tried every other dirver package that has been mentioned on all available forums, have tried different usb ports, different cables etc. n my computer the device is recognised as a Nexus 10 but clicking on it gives a blank page, so cannot see the Nexux files. WTF this is driving me mad. Any ideas?

Are you using a USB 3 port? as i have had many strange issues with these the ports. The issue is caused by one of the intel drivers cant remember exactly which way but there is no easy way to fix this. If this is your issues i would try and find if you have a USB 2.1 port you can use or the Esata ports on laptops tend to be usb 2.1 inside...even though they dont look like it haha

What does Device Manager show? Device name, its Properties and exclamation mark?
You do know that if your device has a "password" then you must be logged in to see its contents.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. All shows up OK in device manager, the device is not password protected, and the laptop has usb2 ports. I had another try today, after connecting the nexus it shows up in my computer as a camera, labelled nexus 10, with the camera icon. When I click on the icon it opens a special folder, must be a camera folder and the camera and scanner wizard starts. After a while it detects the photos on the nexus ( I have loaded a lot on it via USB otg using flash drive ), but thumbnails of the photos are not downloaded as I usually see when I connect a camera. The wizard downloads photos back to the computer, but each photo is about 18 kB instead of the 2 mb they originally were. So it appears a connection is happening, but a very strange one. I don't like to be beaten on problems like this one, but searching the net has not given me any answers, and I don't understand the android system well enough to know what to try next.

I think your device is working. If you connect it up as it now is and then go into Settings > Storage and tap the top RH corner menu you get the USB Computer Connection and select that and change it to MTP you should find it is now visible in My Computer or after auto install of the driver it will be visible. I'm brain dead - you said you had a PTP connection!

No PTP conection or MTP connection either. The Nexus also shows up in Device Manger under Imaging Devices when USB deugging is on, which is causing the camera and scanner wizard to start, although it doesnt work properly. When i disable it nothing happens at all. No idea where to go from here.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had already tried that but I did it again just to make sure. It did not work for me.

Have you tried following the driver install guide from Wug's toolkit? I've never used Skipsoft's but if it doesn't have you delete old drivers properly it's possible there's some old or corrupted driver sticking around from all the installs you've done. If you follow Wug's guide exactly you should end up with the only the correct drivers installed. Also, what ROM and kernel are you using? It's possible the issue is there.

I used a program called usbdeview to uninstall every USB driver with an "android" or "adb" description which should have cleaned up my drivers? Then after reinstalling drivers I tried again no difference. I ran android-tools and can push and pull files to and from the computer and nexus, (from command line) so I believe I have eliminated hardware problems and software problems on the nexus. This leaves the computer, which works perfectly with my other android devices running 4.1.1.

Just in case this helps. In usbdeview I have 5 nexus 10 entries. They all have the vendor id of Google 18d1 and a unique Product ID . Which driver connects is related to the device settings:
PID Device settings
4ee1 MTP
4ee2 MTP + USB debugging
4ee5 PTP
4ee6 PTP + USB debugging
d002 USB debugging
With the device connected I can change settings and see the change in connected driver in USBDeview.

This info does provide me with some way forward. With USB , when connected ptp I have a nexus 10 USB composite device and a nexus 10 digital still camera connected with the green light in USB deview, and also a blank device name, connected, description android composite device with a purple light. I'm guessing purple means not working. But changing drivers does nothing to change the purple light. Switching to mpt gives an additional blank name Google nexus adb interface also with purple light shown as connected. All connected devices show vendor 18d1. Drivers tried 1) clockworkmod (supplied with skipsoft); 2) naked drivers 3) Google drivers. Any clues what to try next?

2 things to check. I just tried running usbdeview from Wug's toolkit. It was v2.0 and wasn't the same as the version I have installed v2.3 - and there have been a significant number of changes. If you have XP pro x64 then you must use the x64 version of usbdeview - again I think Wug's may only ship with 32 bit usbdeview http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html You will also find an explanation of the coloured radio buttons.
If you find you need to update usbdeview then I would suggest you uninstall the device drivers (instructions in Wug's toolkit?) then new drivers from http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html#top and follow the linked install instructions.

I gave up completely on this, and connect via wifi using ES file explorer. I bought my wife a new tablet an Acer Aconia A1-830 and it has the same problems, impossible to connect via ADB, with exactly the same symptoms. Yet our phones connect via ADB without a problem, but both are Androild 4.1 or earlier and the tablets 4.2 or younger. Obviously an Android generated problem that arose when 4.2 was released and on which has no fix.

USB storage not showing up in windows

Anyone else with problems seeing the storage after plugging into PC? adb command works and device drivers installed. Found another forum where turning the usb from MTP to charging and back under developer options does the trick. I have a non stock ROM and seeing if fresh out of the box experiences the same thing.

I have the same issue and can't seem to figure out how to get it to work. My work around has been to use ES File Explorer and open Remote Manager.
Edit: I just plugged it in again to see what I can find. I turned off USB Debugging and Developer Options. Plugged in and pulled the notification bar down, there is an option to change USB Settings to Charging, Power Supply, File Transfers (this works), Photo Transfer and MIDI. Give it a go!

I am running to the exact same problem.
I have tried with USB Debugging off AND on, still no go. I think there's a problem with installing the drivers. Whenever I check the device manager, it still says the drivers weren't installed. I have tried installing the Google drivers. What do we do?!

Need to get the drivers to install first and foremost. Even with USB Debugging on, I'm still able to pull down and change from charge only. Those drivers are key. I had to restart my computer before it was able to take the install.

I'm able to get to the pulldown and change the setting from charging to MTP. Every time I do that, I get a window showing that I'm installing the drivers for Nexus 6P. Then it completes. I can do this over and over again. In the device manager, there's a little exclamation mark by the Nexus 6P and says these drivers weren't installed Code 28. I have exhausted Google to no avail!
Anyone find a solution to this?

You chose to install the drivers manually instead of having the system do it for you? Right click the yellow exclamation .. update drivers .. allow me to pick .. choose the download file location see what that gives you.

When I choose the location, I see a bunch of options. The most relevant ones are ADB Interface and Android Device. Under Android Device there are several more options such as Android Adapter Interface, Android Bootloader Interface, and the such; no mention of MTP.

Did you already download the google USB drivers?
Should just be able to choose the android_winusb.inf driver. It should allow MTP

I have downloaded them. How do I specifically choose just that file? When I go through updating the driver, it asks for a folder location.

Go to dev options, switch the USB from ptp back to mtp and it works for me

Tried. Keeps trying to install the MTP drivers and it won't go through.

I was having the same issue with my computer not detecting the my phone storage but then i remove the drivers from my samsung in the device manager and then right away detect my nexus 6p, no only i can see the storage but if i select how i want to connect (MTP, File trinsfer) it will change the connection type and folder
MTP - shows the pics folder
File transfer - it shows the storage

I don't have any other drivers from any other devices. This is a clean install of Windows 8.1. I've only tried connecting my 6P, my OG 6, and my 9. All have the exact same problem.

You might wanna try installing Huawei Drivers and see if that help

I installed that application and I was able to see my device, the apps, the contacts, everything. EXCEPT I wasn't able to access the device from Windows Explorer which means I am not able to transfer files.

So when you change the option in the phone from charging to file transfer, did you check the device manager to see if there any unknown device showing somewhere?

Changing it from charging to MTP shows a MTP device in Manager with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. When looking into the details, it says that no drivers are installed. When I try "Updating Drivers", it says "Windows failed to install drivers. Code 28" or something along those lines. Code 28 MEANS that Windows failed to install drivers.

Nexus 6p Connection to PC Issue - This Helped!
I had similar problems with PC not recognising my Device. I found http://www.technobuzz.net/install-google-nexus-6p-usb-drivers/ which helped me solve my issues.
1. Downloaded and installed the Huawei Nexus 6p drivers. This installed a Huawei Task Manager which connection to pair was still not recognisable.
2. Deleted old drivers (acer, samsung, htc) from' Device Manager'. This actually helped PC recognise my device which showed up in the Device Manager>Other Devices>Nexus 6p, also in PC interface but once moved off charging to MTP, computer didnt recognise device.
3. Downloaded and installed the adb/fastboot installer. Followed instructions till step 10. My screen didn't show anything like Andoid ADB interface, it displayed MTP file install, which I installed. Just remember to refresh in My PC interface when changing over from charging to MTP, sometimes Nexus 6p will be hidden.
4. Uninstalled the Huawie Task Manager.
This has solved my problem with PC and Device connection. The instructions given are from what I can recall of the process I went through.
Credit to Sidharth Rathore from Technobuzz for this solution.

I was having the same issue until I uninstalled some other debugging drivers I had installed. So I would recommend crawling through your installed apps for any other android usb drivers and uninstalling them if you still have this issue.

Working on mine right now. Found that USB 3.0 ports will not recognize device. Once plugged into a 2.0, it is recognized. Might help your issue

Windows 10 Not Finding My Phone

Hello, I am having a rather strange problem. My PC did the dreaded auto upgrade to windows 10 the other day and I also got a new Nexus 6P. It seems my computer won't recognize my phone, at all, when I plug it in via USB. It's not even showing up in the device manager as a problem, it's like nothing happens at all.
I have
- downloaded and installed the latest google usb driver (right click install)
- downloaded the latest mtp drivers
- downloaded official nexus package from Huawei
- installed ADB and android SDK and also reinstalled the drivers from the SDK manager.
- downloaded some update for windows media player as someone mentioned that could be the problem
- tried different cables
- tried different ports (usb 3 too)
I am really at a loss. My work computer works just fine with it so I know the phone and the cable are okay and other things work on those ports on my home computer. By the way the computer is Windows 10 pro - 64bit

Have you installed Google USB Driver for nexus 6p? If not, download Google USB Driver, extract it and save it in your any name folder that you can locate it later, plug n6p in your pc or laptop and it should pop up with USB option to select either file transfer or picture transfer, click one of them, Windows should be able to find n6p driver, if not, go to setting on your pc, device manager, then look at highlighted USB of your nexus 6p whether it is properly installed, if not, then install it by finding the driver that you extracted in that specific folder... Hoping this works for you.

Thanks for the response, but yea I already got the new usb drivers and installed them via right click install. The thing is though that in device manager the phone doesnt show up, at all, not even as a problem device. Its like its not there. The phone shows that its charging, but it doesn't recognize that its plugged into a usb port. Im really unsure what to do about this.

Did you install x64 driver from Google USB Driver? Check to see to make sure your USB android debugging is checked. It is kind of odd, try to reboot your pc and nexus 6p, then plug your phone in different USB port if your pc has extra USB port..

Should be on top of the folder that your extracted...​

Ah I see what you are referring to. Well, here is the thing, how do I install those drivers? Remember I cant find it device manager to update the drivers. The only way I could find to install them was to right click the android_winusb.inf file and choose install. It said it installed okay, but of course its not working. Any idea?

By the way, I also have usb debugging on and usb configuration WAS set to MTP, but I just changed it to try the different variations, but now its stuck on charging and wont change to MTP, but I think its because the phone isnt being recognized by the computer because this morning at the office I was able to change the usb type to mtp and the others, but that computer recognized the phone... AGHHHH WTF

By the way, if your Android debugging on or check? Just turn "developer options" on your phone and then check Android Debugging. Hey Lucky, I really appreciate you helping me out here, but just so you know I am no newb with this kinda stuff. I have went through this process on a couple other computers with no problem, so when I say its not showing up in device manager I mean its literally not there. Its not there and just under some other name or with a problem icon, its literally not in the device list. Also, I do have usb debugging on

Please go to YouTube and type "install usb driver on nexus 6p" search and then follow instructions from the video... Good luck.

WAIT! I got it... Wow I would of never thought this, but apprently my Wacom was the problem. As soon as I unplogged my wacom tablet the phone picked right up... Strange... Anyways, case closed... freaking conflicts!

Okay hold on, still having problems. Well, now the computer dings when I plug it in, but it still doesnt show up. However when I change the phone usb to PTP the phone becomes visible on the pc in windows explorer (but still not in device manager) and when I put it to MTP it disconnects and I cant see it in windows explorer anymore, and still cant find it in device manager... Ugh...

Okay sorry for all the messages, but i did get the MTP working. I had to uninstall the reinstall the drivers a couple times... very strange, but whatever its working... yay!

Did you figure out the problem? I'm having the exact same problem with mine and with USB mode not switching from Charging and the PC not even recognizing a USB device was plugged in.

I found using a different cable solved my problem. Don't really know why cause the first one I used seemed fine and worked to charge it, but by using a different one, Win 10 recognized it and got me in the game.

Basically it just charges the device even when selected media transfer, nothing shows up.
Tried different USB cables, updating drivers, restarting nothing is working.
Device manager has a error symbol next to the driver SDM636, updating the driver however fails.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

if you are running windows 7 and up right click and click run as admin.
say yes to all the prompts.
if you are running 64bit windows you will get security error when installing device drivers just check always install and click install.
once it installs connect phone to pc and select mtp mode and see if it works.

Try connecting your phone to another system.. sometimes the drivers get corrupted on the system. If the phone is detected on another system, then just search on the net to show hidden devices in devices manager, and delete the ghosted devices in the device manager on the system.

No none of the methods are working.
Removed all ghosted devices too. Shows unknown device below sdm636, both have error sign next to them.
The main issue is all phones in device manager show up under "portable devices" but mine is showing under "other devices".
It's not updating even when manually done.

My last thought would be to enable USB debugging through developer options and check again.. sometimes it works as it does change the connected path in the phone. If this doesn't work, maybe you should try warranty to replace it.
Just for your info, there are android apps like Airdroid which can transfer any content from a system to a phone in a matter of seconds through WiFi.

USB debugging didn't work as well.
AirDroid and share it for PC are annoying.

2) Right click (your device) and update drivers in Device Manager

If Windows 10, you will find an error like " device descriptor request failed" device under USB in Device Manager. Just uninstall it and reconnect your phone. It should detect under "This PC".
Worked for me this way.

No that's not it.
Mine is a completely different problem, it says " one of the installers cannot complete the installation at this time ".
No difference if I uninstall update or disable it's getting nowhere.

Had same problem! Was trying all the steps, but for me helped to switch to MIDI and then to MTP (in developer settings) - now it works. Try yourself.

Somewhat a similar case to mine.
Today I decided to unlock bl , flash twrp and root my M1.
Tried 3-4 methods , 3 PCs , manually installed drivers and wasted 4hrs but all got zero results. Everytime after clicking on "unlock.cmd" nothing happens. Just command window shows erase all devices ... something like that.
I am currently on latest build i.e. 311.
Any help is welcomed.

Download and Install Google USB Driver - https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb
Disable, if already enabled, USB Debugging then re-enable it and try connecting it to your computer. Try switching modes (charging>photos>mtp) if your device doesn't get detected straight away.

Solved : This works for me !!!
This is on my Windows 7
Go to Device manager and "Show enable hidden device" under view menu.
I found a new device at the very top with strange name (forgot to note the name)
Uninstall it and then right click on any device and click on "scan for hardware changes" again (Make sure the phones is connected when scaning)
It reinstalled the device and got my phone working

I somehow solved this by installing both usb google driver and the asus driver one for windows. Didn't restart my computer or anything and when I reconnect my phone with usb debugging and ptp transfer, suddenly there's the permission with certificate something on my phone and I pressed yes and allow this computer, and voila! It shows up after I typed adb devices on the command prompt.

I am having the very same problem but I can transfer file connected of a portable media player, etc.
The problem comes when I try to connect my phone via USB debugging, it shows "No drivers found". Also when installing/reinstalling drivers using 15 seconds installer in the second next windows it's Shows Google Inc. drivers are installed.
OS on PC: Windows 7 32-bit
Phone: Stock (Out of the box and updated over OTA updates to latest).

@.hack//G.U. Could you please upload the Asus driver somewhere and share it? Since then Asus has removed whatever driver was there. Nothing like that now in the Downloads.

You need to install your phone's drivers in PC
You need to install your phone's drivers in PC in order to get recognised by your PC.
Try ADB driver which is time saver always.
