So my 16gb Asus Transformer has a very strange problem. I have not seen it mentioned anywhere. When I plug my unit into the supplied charger there is NO indication on the device that it is charging. It takes about 10 hours to fully charge.
Here is the really strange part... When I put the device into the keyboard dock, I get a charge symbol on the battery and it says charging. To make things even more strange the cable and wall wart provided with the tablet quick charges the keyboard dock, light is red then turns green when fully charged (no longer then 2 hours so far).
How could the charger charge the dock no problem but not charge the unit itself? My thoughts were that the dock may seat farther into the tablet then the cord does so I took a small file and took off a little of the plastic on the eee pad connector side, that did not help at all. Any ideas?
I have flashed the latest software update, and I have done a "Factory Data Reset" and it will still not "quick charge" from the supplied charger, only from the dock.

I must admit that I expected to see a charging light on the pad itself, I think the hole you mention may be the light sensor.
When I use the official charger, I get a lightning bolt symbol and it charges fairly quickly. When I used my Kindle charger or an HTC one and plugged the USB into them, I had no indication it was charging and it was really REALLY slow...

The ASUS charger is rated @ 15V 1.2A. Most USB chargers are 5V. USB itself is rated @ 5V. So I donno how it can use 15V via USB. I tried several different chargers with much higher amperage but no luck at all. Quite strange I must say.
Let me clarify, The ASUS Eee Pad has no charging lite on the unit itself. The only indication is in the taskbar on Android 3.0.1. The battery will change from a green battery symbol to a green battery symbol with a lightning bolt on it when it is "Quick Charging".
There are two ways that the device charges, the first is a quick charge (with lightning bolt on batt. symbol), the second is a slower trickle charge (no indication). A quick charge should take about 2 - 3 hours to fully charge. The trickle charge will take up to 12hrs. The ONLY two ways to get a "Quick Charge" is 1. To use the provided charger (came with the unit), and 2. Is to put it in the dock. A trickle charge can be done with ANY other USB port (ie. laptop, desktop, iPod AC adapter, ect.).
My ASUS Eee Pad Transformer will ONLY "Quick Charge" with the dock. The cable provided with the unit will NOT "Quick Charge" my device.
Anyone else have this? If so do you have a fix?

Ok, so here is the deal...
I ordered a 32gb version and I'm givving the 16 version to my wife. I tried the new plug in the old tablet and the same thing happened. So I thought it MUST be the tablet and NOT the charger as I thought it was.
Looking into the bottom of the tablet I noticed a pin that looked like it was bent. If you look into the socket with the screen facing up. The 4th or 5th pin was bent up and not sitting in the track like it should have been. I compaired this to the new 32gb version. I used a needle to gently move it into place and tried again and it charged as it should with both cables. Newegg offered to replace the unit, but everything else works great on it and, now it chages just fine. I'll just keep it.

If anyone else is having a problem take a look into the socket of the tablet, it could be a quick fix.

I have the exact same problem, but mine didn't start until I applied an update from asus.
I think I may have *had* the same problem. I returned my transformer to sears after it would not charge. After my return a clearance sticker was placed on it and now after reading this thread I am considering repurchasing the transformer and getting a new adapter. But I am concerned that it may be something wrong with the tablet itself. This thread leads me to conclude it is the former. But what do you think?
I was not able to charge through the adapter - however, when connected through the USB cord my laptop did recognize it. I did not leave it connected for longer than 10minutes -I guess if i left it in for 12hrs plus I would have a conclusive answer - but to late for that now..
I got the tablet today -it had 5% battery and after trying three outlets it shutdown- it would restart and not get past the homescreen (which had the time and stated to connect the charger and the lock) it would then shutdown.
In the 20 minutes I was able to use my transformer it worked great

The "hole" next to the camera is the light sensor.

Your unit is working correctly. There is no charging indicator on the tablet only on the dock. The tablet show charge status via software in the lower right corner of the display or in setup which will show percentage.
When you connect the unit to the dock, the tablet is charged via the batteries in the dock. The goal is to ensure that tablet is as charged as possible so you can undock and go knowing the tablet is charged. The charging from the dock to the tablet will only occur if the tablet is below 97%. The indicator light on the dock only refers to the charge status of the battery on the dock, not the tablet.
Someone referenced the little light on the front next to the camera, that is not a light. It is an ambient light sensor for the tablet.
The colors for the charge light indicator on the dock are documented in the manual. As I remember it they are <10% quickly flashing orange, 10-50% slowly flashing orange, 50-95% orange, 95%+ green.
I am also having charging problems with my Transformer.
Everything seems to work fine when I used the supplied charger and the USB plug, both with dock and with just the transformer itself.
However I'm presently away and only took the USB cable with me. I've plugged the USB cable into my travel multiplug, which has a usb slot as well and I'm getting no charge at all, either on the dock or the transformer itself. Also the battery is showing that it is actually draining, even while connected to the multiplug. I've also tried connecting both the dock and the transformer to my juicepack (rated at 3.7V, 4,800mAh), but no luck with that as well.
Anyone else had these problems?

The Transformer will only charge by USB using the supplied wall adapter. Not sure why that is, but that's been my experience.
my problem too.. I got mine yesterday and updated the software straight away. it charged all night and charging worked on both the pad itself and the keyboard.
today it doeasnt..
the cable and the sockets are fine (my pc sees it and did some file transfers) so hardware seems ok. the charger gets quite hot though. does anybody experience the same? maybe its the charger? I wonder if factory reset would help...

the wall plug that came with the TF is rated for 5V-15V, 2-12A. This is a lot higher than normal USB, which is 5V,1A max. When you plug it into a normal USB jack, you are only in trickle charge mode, and i think it's only with the screen off.
As of this morning my TF nor the dock will charge from the charger. I suspect the charger itself is damaged somehow but I cannot find anything physically wrong with it from the outside.
EDIT: Weird, after the 20th time playing with it, taking it apart, reseating the USB cord, etc, it finally started charging again after hours of aggravation. Hopefully it stays that way....
I'm thinking the inner pins somehow lost contact with the interposer. I've also noticed that the adapter gets alarmingly warm when charging. As in it's hotter than the PSU I use for my Alienware m17x R2, which is almost hot enough to give a mild burn.
My charger gets pretty warm as well. I think because its charging the device at such a fast pace.

Yeah I'm just hoping this whole thing doesn't keep happening. Had the charger on the dock for a while before I realized it wasn't charging since there's no indicator other than the LED. I'm just glad I got the dern thinking working again. Figures it would get fixed not 5 minutes after I post here and send a ticket in to Asus.
I wonder if cutting a few vents on the charger or at least blowing some air with a fan might help. Perhaps there is a thermal protection shutdown circuit.

i had the same problem, not had it since, something is definitively happening with the charger, changing sockets seemed to help
My charger actually died on me. It doesnt charge at all anymore with the included charger. I can still use the cable to charge off of USB, but that is sloooow. I bought an iPad charger (2 amp) and it charges a bit faster. At least I can still use my tablet until a replacement charger is available.
Just FYI I was told by Asus CS a replacement would not be available for awhile, and they wouldn't RMA the charger by itself.
Sounds like many of the charger problem is the contact between the country plug adapter and the charger itself. First thing I would do if it stopped charging is remove the country plug adapter , clean contacts and reinstall. Sometimes in the process of plugging in or removing the charger, you move contacts enough to either make or break the connection.

Standby and off are very different states. In standby, it's STILL RUNNING. If you leave the WiFi on, it's still communicating over the network. Applications are still running in the background.
I did a test recently (right before I got my dock). I left the TF in 'standby' with WiFi on (turned off the sound) and went to sleep. About 9 hours later, the battery was down around 50%.
Next day I did the same, but I turned off WiFi. Battery ended up still being above 90%.
The workaround is turning it off. Disabling WiFi reduces battery consumption in standby, but it does not eliminate it.
And for the 'stopped charging from the AC adapter' issue, it seems that unplugging the adapter from the wall for a while seems to reset the charger.

I feel this is a shortcoming of honeycomb than asus. hopefully this gets fixed in a future update. Havent seen this behavior in any other mobile device.

Which part do you think is a problem with Honeycomb instead of Asus?
The dock issues or the power supply not charging? How can the OS be responsible for either? (save for driver issues with the keyboard, which Asus fixed with an update)
I actually had this happen to me, but reassembling the charger didn't fix it for me. I ended up restoring to fix it. Haven't had any issues since.
I had the same problem. Did as stated above... Left charger unplugged for 20-25 minutes, then gave it a try and now it's back to charging... All good.

Possibly a related issue? My Transformer is now not charging although I believe either my cable is faulty or the connector to the tablet itself. I don't have my official Asus charger with me today so I plugged it into another USB power charger and I get nothing. When I plug the cable into my computer the Transformer does show up as a device in Windows however there is still no charging.
Finally was able to get the dock today for my TF.
So... how do I tell how much battery is remaining in the dock? I was hoping it would show them separately.
Also, is there instructions anywhere for this thing? ie. why the number 1 and number 6 keys are solid white circles?
Anything else I need to know?

The 1/6 cirlces are standard ASUS keyboard labeling. It allows a quick refererence point for keys.
My battery monitor widget shows an estimate of 10h46min on a full charge. Shouldn't it be 16 hours? I guess it's not recognizing the dock battery too? Anything I need to change?

Actually the battery for the Dock is rated at 9.5 hours. Your 16 hours is when you COMBINE the tablet and dock together......THEN you MIGHT get 16 hours depending on what you do.
Sorry, the dock wasn't fully charged yet when I typed that. I wonder if that widget shows the combined dock & TF battery time together.

Just got my keyboard about 2 hours ago. I am charging it per the instructions but have a question. How do you know how much charge is on the keyboard? Does the battery widget on the TF show one for keyboard and one for pad? Also how important is it to charge for 8 hours before even hooking the keyboard up? Any and all help and info and input is greatly appreciated.

I docked it right away and it's still charging. I never heard of charging it without the TF attached. Does it matter??? :S
From what I can tell, the only way of seeing how much of a charge there is on the dock, is by the little light by the 40pin connecter slot. Orange = not full. Green is good to go. And I'm wondering about the battery widget myself.
I've got some similar confusion. I had the keyboard plugged up by itself for a few hours assuming it would charge, but when I unplug the power and plug in the tablet, it won't charge it.
There is no way to tell how much juice the dock has in it.
Asus should fix this.

I've noticed now that the dock battery charges the tablet when the tablet is below 97%. I guess that's how it works. Would be nice if Asus would give us some sort of information instead of having to trying to figure it out ourselves. Jeez.

I let it charge (just the dock) for about 14 hours and it evidently charged to the max as the green light came on. I then connected the TF and all seems to be working smoothly. Hard for me to believe that Asus would put out a product(keyboard dock) which appears to have great quality and leave out something as important(to me) as a battery indicator. I did receive the update for the keyboard as soon as I plugged the TF in this morning so that is a plus. I am not fond of the lagging when typing on the keybosrd, I would hope that they will fix this.
I think this is getting quite critical for me, and I have seen a few others having the same issue. I kept my dock charged all weekend(solid green light), and last night took it off charge closed lid and put it in my bag. Today, I opened the TF and installed the awesome Battery widget from the Apps section, and it says my dock is at 3%, and my TF at 97%. So in a matter of 14 hours, the dock has been drained with the TF being idle and screen off.

Was the tablet on the dock when it was charging?
yes. the tablet charged first and then the dock charged.

FYI: In a recent "test" I did with 3.1 the dock battery lasted 30 hours from green light to flashing red (orange) light (I didn't have the great battery widget at that time. I just installed it!!!). This is with 4-5 hours of moderate use (navigation, email, some youtube), 10 hours of standby with wifi off and the rest (15 hours) of standby with wifi on.
This means around 3%/hour battery drain while on standby.

Hey all, first off, thanks for the link-age to the battery widget. I can finally see what's going on with my dock battery status....and that status is NOT good
I posted in another thread that I had charged my dock as soon as I got it (before connecting to the tablet) for 18+ hours, and I never saw a green light. After that, I connected it to my tablet running Primordial 3.1, it offered to update the dock FW to 0209, and I allowed it to. It said update successful, and Settings confirms the dock is at v0209.
Problem is, now that I can see my dock battery status with that widget, it shows only 37%. My tablet is at 100%, so I figured the dock should then take the charge from the official ASUS mains charger, but this doesn't appear to be happening. As soon as I plug in the charger, the widget shows "Dock Status: Charging", then after 1-2 secs, changes back to "Not Charging".
The dock light is solid orange while I have it "charging"/plugged in, and I have NEVER seen it turn green. When I disconnect the charger, the orange light on the dock flashes infrequently, telling me that it has less that 95% charge. I am not sure if there is something faulty with my actual dock, but people reported that the v0209 FW fixed most issues. I just wish I could get both battery statuses to 100%!!
I wish ASUS did a better job on this dock. I know that it is a groundbreaking product here, so bugs are expected, but since it is hardware and I only have 14 days to return it to the store I bought it from, it would be good to know what the beep is going on...
Any thoughts, suggestions, comments would be appreciated!

We may still be waiting on the battery saving fix from Asus. They've mentioned the dock is draining too quickly (especially in standby) - haven't seen an improvement even with 0209 upgrade so hopefully we're still outstanding!
The "mobile dock battery saving mode" under settings -> screen seems to help a litle. Lost ~30% overnight on dock charge, and dock has just hit 3% after a good 4 hours use so far today.

Thanks for that Highland3r...but may I ask, have you guys ever seen your TF dock hit a 100% charge? I'm still puzzled as to why mine is stuck at 37% and the battery widget shows that the dock is not charging.
Also, what is the supposed process when the dock and tablet are joined, but OFF of the charger? I would assume that the dock charges the tablet until it runs out of juice, then the tablet battery would decrease?
Funny because when I have none connected to the charger, but combined, my battery icon does not show that the tablet is charging. Maybe in this case, the dock battery + tablet battery enter some sort of parallel mode, which combines the draw from both (as one big battery?)...No idea here, but I still think something is wrong if my dock won't show past 37% and others have (possibly) seen their dock charge to 100%.

Sorry I can't give you any useful comments other that I have a similar problem. After one successful initial charge (successful meaning the light turned green), the dock will not completely charge anymore. I had the dock by itself on the charger for 11 hours and still had the orange led. Unplugged the charger, docked the tablet and immediately got the flashing orange.

Yup, dock hits 100% charge.
When combined but off AC, tablet remains at 100% charge until dock hits ~3% then the tablet battery drops.
Looks like, once the tablet hits 100% it no longer shows the charging status, just shows as full until it drops down to ~95%.
When charging, the tablet charges to ~100% first, then the dock charges up.
Have you tried charging the dock alone (i.e dock not connected to dock) overnight and see what the charge shows the next morning?
Here's my experience today with the dock... Took my dock and tablet off charge at 7:00am this morning. Started using it at a Google AdWords seminar at 9:00am for taking notes, email, doing Google AdWords stuff, etc. It's now 2:30pm, and the dock is at 27% remining. The tablet is at 100% remaining. So, that's 5.5 hours of solid use, and the dock still has over 25% remaining. If it keeps up, I should get to just about the end of the seminar at around 4:00pm before I start using the tablet's battery.
This seems pretty good to me.

Yes, I did in fact charge it alone for 18+ hours as soon as I got it, before ever connecting it to the tablet.
Right now I'm running more tests, and as both devices are coupled, OFF of the mains charger, my tablet is NOT receiving a charge at all. I ran some battery-intensive tasks to get the power level to drop below 90%, but the dock still never seems to charge the tablet (I don't see the battery icon change, nor do any other indicators show that the tablet is getting a charge when docked). Still says the dock is at 37% power, which I've never seen change after getting the Battery Widget, so I'm thinking something is wrong with my dock.
BTW, did you guys update the dock to v0209 while on Primordial 3.1? This is what I did, and while I suspect the FW was not modified by Roach, it should have flashed fine (which it did say after I performed the dock FW update). Although, as I did the update, it stayed at 0% for a while, then immediately said "Update Successful". A bit odd, but it still shows v0209 in the System Settings, and appears to work fine. It's just this battery madness!!
Will give it another day or two, but then might return it to the store before my 2 weeks are up.

I've run some test, and to sum up, with the tablet docked with the keyboard, I've lost 16% battery in one night with the tablet TURN OFF ! (and not in stand by mode) !
Is Asus aware of this problem ? Is a fix on the way ?

Just to clarify - the dock constantly shows 37%? Doesn't drop lower and never increases? Seems a little wierd - would expect some battery drain of the dock due to the "other" issues.
You maybe best off trying an RMA on the dock, or contacting Asus and see if they can suggest anything.
One other thing to try (just to rule things out) is to run the following command via terminal emulator on your tablet (you can probably use ADB via a PC too if you wanted)
If you can post (or PM) the output - these two entries look to contain relevant information on Battery Status etc.
Try pulling the dock whilst running the logcat (you should see new entries on keyboard remove and keyboard dock, try the same with charged vs non charged too)

Lsst night, another test on the drain rate of the dock. At 11:45 PM, dock was at 61% and tablet was 100%. Today at 6:45 AM, the dock was at 27%, tablet was still full. So in 7 hrs, it drained 34% or 5% an hour on idle.
Is that consistent with what others are seeing?

Yup pretty much seeing the same. 30% drop overnight from a full charge

Thanks again for your help with this. I saw your post about the logcat BatteryService filter elsewhere, and I have been running it since last night (I wanted to post it before bed, but fell asleep on the couch!).
Anyways, it is attached as a .txt file so as not to clog up this thread. I did not clean it, so it has a fair amount of lines, but you will notice that my dock did drop down to 36%! Unfortunately, the tablet also goes down to 90%, so this is why I fear there is something wrong with my dock, as it should be keeping the tablet at 100% until the dock reaches 3% (or 0%).
By looking at the log and analyzing the STATUS parameter, it seems to me that:
Status = 2 (means charging)
Status = 4 (means not charging)
Status = 5 (means full batt?)
My "dock_status" appears to reflect the same, but you will notice "dock_status = 1", which shows a 0% level (this is when I was plugging, unplugging the dock from the tablet).
Anyways, I know it's tough to figure out what's going on, especially since your docks seem to be working quite nicely. I can't imagine that it would take forever to charge the dock, but the funny thing is that it finally dropped 1%, but is still NOT charging my tablet. I also do not see the tablet in charging state when both are connected, but not being charged from the mains.
Thanks again for your help, it's very much appreciated. I think for now, I will leave them both connected to the mains charger, and see how long it takes the dock to increase past a 36% charge. Otherwise, it's going back to the store I got it from 3 days ago for a new one.
A question for those of you who have docks that do charge correctly.
How warm does the wall adapter get when the dock by itself is charging?
I know when I charge my tablet by itself it gets very warm, almost too hot to hold. When I charge my dock by itself the wall adapter is barely warm. Maybe this temperature difference is related to why my dock will not get a full charge. Something is telling the wall adapter or preventing the wall adapter from outputting the correct power.

First of all, I don't have any ASUS Transformer tablet, and I have never seen nor used one.
But, I will buy the upcoming ASUS Transformer Prime.
So, my questions are related to the current keyboard dock.
Does the keyboard dock need power to function?
Probably yes. If it is not connected to a power source (like wall power outlet) and the dock's battery is empty, does it take the battery power of the tablet?
How good is the mechanical connection between the dock and the tablet?
I would imagine I will dock and undock quite often. So, I am afraid this dock/undock will loosen the dock?
I saw a trackpad in the dock, but can I use mouse (computer mouse)?

On mine, the keyboard battery is drained first. When the keyboard battery hits 3% it then begins to drain the tablet battery. The keyboard remains functional even when on the tablet battery. The most recent update made it where even USB attachments function for me when the keyboard batter is drained. So, you only need wall power when both batteries are completely drained.

It is surprisingly solid. There are two hook latches in addition to the charging port connector. The tablet is also inserted into a shallow tray which adds even more stability.

Yes you can. I have used USB mice, trackballs and various video game controllers without issue.

No the dock doesn't need power as such. It supplies power when charged, when discharged it works the same as a keyboard plugged into a PC. Yes you can use a normal mouse but why? You have a touch screen and a track pad so why plug something else in, why carry more crap round with you. No mouse or track pad will replicate what you get on windows as android doesn't work like that. Best advice I can give is go into a store and have a shot.

Not only can it take power from the tablet, but it can also provide power TO the tablet. In other words, if you have a fully charged keyboard and a nearly drained tablet, you can pop on the keyboard and it will start to charge the tablet from the keyboard's battery. And you never need more than one power cable -- if you plug in the cable to the dock with the tablet attached, they'll both charge (I'm not sure if they charge simultaneously or if one charges first and then the other).
Tab charges first then the dock.
