Nexus 10 HDMI - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Google Play videos do not play via HDMI cable to my TV. They play fine on the tablet screen, but not via HDMI. All other videos play fine via , e.g., YouTube, Netflix, Crackle, etc. Even my first tablet (Vizio) works fine via HDMI with Google Play videos. Anyone else having this issue? Yes, my TVs are all HDCP compliant.

Same Issue
I'm having the same issue and can not for the life of me find any information on it. It worked fine prior to 4.2.1 but now it just shows as loading regardless of the media being located on the device or coming from Google's servers.
First no Miracast and now this?

I guess I wont be updating to 4.2.1 just yet then as its working fine on my n10. Stock non rooted.

Works fine on my end. Plays just fine. 4.2.1

This has been a issue with every tablet I've had. I've been told that they don't play out of the HDMI out for security and licensing reasons.

Then how is it that I can play my Google Play movies. Even the 2min previews on movies works just fine through HDMI to my Phillips 50inch LCD tv

Does the free ice age movie count? That's what I can play on my Samsung TV.

Previews for Google Play videos play fine via HDMI on my Nexus 10, but not the actual purchased or rented videos. Have gotten no answers from Google support.

Have you tried playing previews from the play store bazbazbaz? Through the HDMI out that is

Both of the free movies I've had (Transformers: DOTM and Ice Age) play fine via HDMI. I've not purchased or rented any other content so I can't comment further than that.
I'm on rooted 4.2.1, but it works fine unrooted too.
I've noticed though that the previews play as a mirrored screen, whereas the actual movies play as an additional external display with the tablet display having the video controls on.
I'm in the UK if it helps at all; not sure if its worth tracking to see if it's an issue only affecting certain countries?

Google Play Movies will only stream through HDMI if your display support HDCP over HDMI...

I tested last night and have the same issue, I can mirror just fine, but when I get the "HDMI Screen" page for Google Play videos it just stays there with the spinner and won't play.
Can those of you who have this working chime in on this one; Do you guys have your bootoaders "locked"?
The only difference I can see is that I'm rooted (others say it works for them rooted), modified kernel (anyone else?) and my bootloader is still unlocked.
I'll make a Nandroid backup tonight and relock to see if that has any effect.
My television (Samsung 46" LED) is most certainly HDCP compliant. I do have the tablet connected to the ARC (Audio Return Channel) which could potentially be an issue, but I'll swap that later too, just to make sure.

Darn
anyone able to shed any light on this? I have relocked and temp unroot but nothing, it just completely refuses to play while HDMI is connected, it just still is at a page that says "HDMI Screen" with a spinner and a picture of a TV and that is it.
Just to make it worse, the latest update to YouTube won't let you full screen a video while HDMI is connected. You have to full screen it then plug HDMI in to get full screen.

I am 100% stock and unable to play anything out of the play store on my n10, however I still have my transformer infinity around and that is able to so I don't think it's a play store issue...

I purchased an episode of a TV show from the Playstore. It won't play on my TV either. Everything played fine on my old Acer Iconia. Now I purchase an actual Google device and it doesn't work?
It plays on my tablet, but the instant I plug the hdmi cable into the tablet it goes to some "hdmi" screen and won't play. Has anyone found a fix for this? Google support was useless. Their only suggestion was to download instead of stream. Neither works. Very disappointing because my "old eyes" enjoy things much better on my 46" TV as opposed to my tablet.

Agreed, still no fix found here, but I absolutely refuse to buy or rent anything until I know I can play it on my 46" TV. It's just obsurd.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a fixed in the next Android release, otherwise I'll just forget Google Play movies exists entirely.
I just wish I knew of a player that would full screen my own content on the TV then it wouldn't be an issue.

720p over hdmi / mirroring - have you done it? Results/Comments

So I'm waiting for my hdmi cable to come from monoprice, and I'm getting kind of anxious. I was just curious if anybody converted 720p videos and played them on a large hdtv, and how it worked out. Was there smooth playback, was there an audio delay, is the quality what you expected? Also, how are games displayed? I saw a video of someone playing angry birds on the Evo but the frame rate was pretty bad.
I got my HDMI cable yesterday. I haven't tried converting any videos and playing them on my 46 inch HD TV, but I did stream a TWiT TV video on the Xoom and mirrored it on the TV. It looked really good. The sound synced up fine, but it carries the audio on the HDMI so I had to turn up the volume on my TV to hear it. I think I'll either have to route the audio out on my TV to my stereo or I'll have to send the headphone jack of the Xoom to my stereo.
Since the Xoom screen has a vertical resolution of 800 pixels and the HDMI out is running at 720, some of the top and bottom of the screen gets cut off. If you are playing a 720 video that shouldn't be an issue though.
I'll try playing Angry Birds on it and see how the frame rate looks. I didn't notice any degredation in the frame rate though while I was playing around with it yesterday.
After playing with it for an hour or so I was pretty happy with the way it looked. I'm waiting for Flash so I can see how Netflix mirrored to my TV looks. Now you've got me wondering though. I'm going to RIP a DVD and see how it looks mirrored to my TV from the Xoom.

Netflix doesn't use flash though so it won't do you any good unless you're using an app like Playon.
I used it last night. (no 720p source)
Mainly on the Youtube app and got some issues.
Now the cable I got was 15' from amazon, but who knows how good it is.
I'm connecting it to a 27" PC monitor that has been wonky with my cable box (I think its the cable box's issue)
But that said, it restarted my Xoom 3 times. Videos would play fine and then freeze, with the tap to restart message. Audio would be out of sync for awhile, and then catch up, or freeze. Im thinking it might be the app though, I don't have any other media on it to play though. When it was working, the quality was great (other than the HQ youtube) menus looked sharp, sound was perfect.
Ill try and move some 720p Community episodes over tonight and see how they look.
+1 for community.
Hopefully it is just the youtube app, it seems a lot of people either hit or miss with that. I don't know, since day one, I have had what I would consider a relatively low amount of force closes (maybe 1-2 per day) with random stuff here or there, but some people talk about it like they can't use it at all. The 1-2 is with several hours of various usage per day, and the force close is usually when trying to open an app, not even when I'm doing anything important. I never had any wiggling on the upper half of the Palm Pre from a release day launch, never had any issues with the Evo Maybe I'm just lucky.
I bet my Xoom explodes tonight.
converting a 720p movie on my xoom tonight and trying it out..
also youtube has massive problems to begin with soo, naturally the mirroring was horrible

I have Despicable Me, 720p version, on my Xoom, plugged it in with the Micro HDMI to My 50" Samsung - looked great I thought. Mouthing I slightly off, but thats how it is on my Xoom to so no changes with that. I also played Mario Cart with the N64 App and the Wiimote hooked up. Worked great!
I have Avatar, Startrek & Transformers 2 on my device played them all via HDMI using the Rock Player app and it was perfect sound was in sync and no lag.
Played Nes & Snes and both were great too. Web browsing was also very solid.
Only one issue and that was the YouTube app. Its an app issue not tablet or HDMI... that app is unstable at best usually anyways and Google needs to update it.

Edit: Just wanted to say that the TV in the video is a 55" 1080p TV.

I have the same problem with the YouTube app when on wifi and no hdmi. I have not tried too much on wireless since I don't want to burn through my cap but the few I tried worked better. Regardless I am inclined to say it is the app and not the HDMI out.

HDMI out full screen

This is really annoying. You can play a video using HDMI out to a TV and it plays full screen, as long as it is from Google movies. However if you try and play a video of your own it isn't full screen. It is missing about 3cm each side. I can't work out why or how to change it as it has the ability to. Any ideas?
Thanks

Does it downscale the image to 1080p when you are in the UI? If not it might be that whatever app you are using is not yet set up for the N10.
via Tapatalk
Yeah it cuts the side bits off. Only time you get full screen is via Google movie store

Right, that's really odd. Wonder why they wouldn't have system-wide downscaling?

Yup. Huge bars on the side and can't get rid of the bottom bar like the tf700 can. I hope this is fixed. However, I messed with my bravia TV a little it is much better now. I'll post pics.

I'd also like to know.
I get sound, but both the sound and video stutter in Google play movies. Tried ice age and planet earth, both stuttered badly. Hoping this is just one of those things that will be fixed in an update.
I have had my Nexus 10 for about a week now and really like it. This YouTube issue is something that needs to be addressed. Ice Age plays full screen perfect 1080p smooth as silk. YouTube plays at lower quality in a black frame. It also plays on the tablet screen when plugged into HDMI to TV. Make the YouTube app perform like the Google Play app please
Any news on that?
I find that the youtube app won't go full screen when HDMI is plugged in, any solution?
I'm reading everywhere that ppl say it's not outputting fullscreen.
At the chance of being simply wrong: did you ever take into account that the usual TV with its 1080p resolution (1920x1080) has a 16:9 screen ratio but the tablet with its 2560x1600 resolution clearly has a 16:10 screen reatio.
So it simply does not match. If just mirroring what is seen on the tablet... it will always have those black bars on the TV screen.
Or am I just not understanding what everyone barks about?
The transformer it's also 16:10. It removes the bars and (no need for them on the TV) and voila. It also blanks the screen when watching videos. That's one area where the tramsformer is a lot better, but it's a simple fix. You know, I'm not picky but it really annoys ke that such a simple thing to fix has not been addressed. How can you test the HDMI and not notice that and at least give some basic options. That type of thing is inexcusable. Watch them never give us any options.

Movies
Is there anyone on 4.2.1 who can actually play Google play movies with hdmi out onto their TV?
Mine just stops at the "HDMI Screen" when I try to play the free ice age with a progress spinner in the middle, and other logs in logcat either that might explain the issue ( no logs at all). It's connected to my Samsung D8000 which is definitely HDCP compliant. I've never had it working. The film will play fine though when HDMI is not plugged in. It's really annoying cause I refuse to buy or rent films if I can't hook up to my TV.

I have no problem watching movies or TV shows with the Google Play Movies app, connected to a 46" Sharp TV. Audio & video are fine. There is the occasional stutter, but nothing too bad. I've only played shows off battery - I haven't tried it while charging yet, though I can't believe that would make a difference.

Just tried again on my TV and on my computer monitors, all are fully HDCP compliant. It's either the tablet or the cable cause it doesn't work with any of those screens, just stops at spinner on HDMI Screen every time.
Unfortunately I don't have another device or another cable to rule out which is not the cause.

Hi from what I am reading the nx10 HDMI out is only mirror image that will not fill the HDTV format. Is this a hardware issue on nexus 10 end or can it be corrected in a software update..? I would actually buy and rent movies with Google play if I can watch them full screen on my TV.
If Google fixes this issue I see more people utilizing their movie service.
Till then I am using Microsoft Xbox.
Thanks...joe
When I connect my N10 to my plasma TV it reports 1080p which is the maximum this TV supports so I think it's device dependent based on the max of either the TV or tablet but given the resolution of the N10 the TV is likely to be the limit.

If you watch movies it does automatically fill the entire screen. It also switches to a slightly different mirroring mode where it doesn't technically mirror.
Games etc. don't fill the entire screen though. Neither does the launcher etc.
1080p
Also confirmed 1080p output to TV from my nexus 10, with a HDMI cable that is a few years old from when I picked up a droid charge a couple of years ago.

I am not sure why I dont get full screenI use a a cable that supports 1080P AND I have to use a hdmi switch because my tv only has 3 inputs and I needed a 4th. When I play the movie trailer in play store it does not widen the screen. I still have black bands on sides like I do when nexus mirrors image. My tv supports 1080p. Is a sony xbr2 40". A little old but if my bluray player is fine why not nexus.

On my LG Full HD 1080p 37" TV, the mirrored display from my Nexus 10 to the TV is always coming out with black edges roung the screen ie not being displayed in full screen. The only options in terms of aspect ratio for the TV are 4:3 or 16:9 when connected to the tablet. The Zoom1 and Zoom 2 options can only be accessed when viewing normal TV or DVDs. Is there a way I can fill up the black edges on the TV with what's being displayed from the tablet? The only way i get full screen is when i watch videos from Google Play Movies. I would live to stream videos from XBMC in full screen mode if possible. Thanks. The info displayed when the OK button on my TV's remote is being pressed shows 1920*1080 @60Hz when Tablet is connected to TV via HDMI

[Q] How to scale Netflix hdmi out properly instead of mirroring?

When I watch Netflix on my 1080P TV, the Nexus 10 mirrors the 16:10 image into the TV which is much smaller than when I play the same show on my htpc (which is currently out of commission) full screen. I know the Nexus 10 scales Google Play movies properly to 16:9 and full screen, so is there any way to make Netflix do the same? I've scoured Google and this forum and can't figure out if it's possible?
Google needs to scale everything when hdmi is plugged in...
Currently mxplayer is going to implement the same scaling that Google movies does...
Good luck getting Netflix to do the same though

I wonder if there is a modified apk or something.
Not atm... Honestly were gonna have to wait until google gets their sh*t together or until a dev decides to try and implement full ui scaling most likely it will be the former

[Q] Can OUYA work as a full-feature mediacenter?

I am interesting in OUYA because it has a slim body. I dont want to play video game on it. The only thing I want to do is to play movie. I have a lot of movies stored in my laptop. The current way that I use is to connect my laptop to HDTV by HDMI. Can OUYA replace my current method? I can play 720P movie(MKV or RMVB) on my cellphone(Galaxy note 2). Ouya has the same equipment(Tegra3 with 1.7G). So I think it can play 720P movie smoothly like my cellphone. Did anyone here try playing moive on OUYA?
Yes the ouya plays 720p movies well. I use xbmc at the time. I was thinking about the ouya or the raspberry pi and I am glad I bought the ouya. The ouya, for my use and purposes, is an awesome media center. The internal storage is small but it has a usb port. Xbmc has support for a network attached storage (nas) which is what I use. The ouya also has the added benefit of games. For only $99.99, I recommend the ouya for your current situation. It also has low power usage and it is highly portable.

if you want to use your ouya exclusively as mediacenter you can start xbmc with a autorun-app, don't know what it's called tho.
only culprit is that the button layout isnt quite optimal when using ouya controller but i'm using my cellphone with yatse installed and as a media-solution this couldn't be any better.
not only 720p but even 1080P movies (shared from my nas) are being played like a charm and if you*'e into 3D the ouya should be able to handle most formats, too...but didn't try that, since my tv doens't support it

i didn't have any issues with fullhd-mkvs yet. for all i know there are some culprits with surround sound, but didn't notice anything major up to now.
you can without any problem plug your sd card reader/usb-harddrive/etc to your ouya. the device will be mounted to /media/usb
if you want you could even use a dvd-drive for your ouya, as long as you are willing to compile the needed module for your kernel.
didn't try it yet, but atrix with tegra 2 was able to do this, so ouya with tegra 3 should be able, too

Or use Yatse from your phone/tablet which gives you many more controls and features.
I have ordered one from Amazon US and I am now eager to wait for shipping it to China.

Short answer: Better get an raspberry pi with Openelec.
Longer Answer:
yes, i do have 2 and did use one as mediaplayer using mostly XBMC (connected to a linux fileserver) at my home and using it with VLC when beeing at my girlfriends place with an 2TB HD.
Unluckily i really cant recommend it atm because the XBMC version for android/ouya is still lacking CEC support, means you cant use your TVs remote for controlling it and it cant do AC3 audio passthrough over HDMI (if i remember correctly). The XBMC for android still cant play a lot of movie files my Raspberry PI does play without problems. Therefore it makes a much better media player if its ok for one to not use the most fancy XBMC Skins. (I recommend Bello Skin)
In addition to this the Ouya lacks support for direct flashing and a lot of poeple find the companies politics highly questionable. The not acceptance of the last TOS locked my Ouya Console completely and not just the market. Its softbricked now. It has been sold as an "open" project but turns out to be as closed as "a nuns arse". Therefore its unluckily unlikely that we will see an Openelec port for the Ouya. Someone did port Debian to Ouya so there might be a solution using Debian and XBMC but AFAIK there are not all drivers and libs working atm.

Dont mean to be rude but i dont think you are objektive here.
I dont know what files you are unable to play but i am using mine a lot for Multimedia and didnt have any issues with audio at all. I know that some special dts Formats are incompatible for now.
Surly there are some things about ouya that many of us don't like but that's not the point here. Some are codec support and cec which are still under construction and might always be, but seriously: raspberry?
I really wouldn't want to have such a laggy interface and long folder loading times.
If you really want sth fully compatible with all major Codecs and cec and so on get a finished product like little black box or sth similar. Else be happy to have sth. to tinker with.

I still hate that dts/multichannel audio ain't working on xbmc, it is worthless to me untill that is fixed.

Losing faith if I'm honest. I have been giving this project my backing because it seemed to have an enthusiastic following.
I'm not sure there is the focus on the issues that matter to ME, I'm not sure how many people wanted this little box specifically for XBMC but I suspect it was a few. I know the DTS/AC3 issue is an XBMC problem and nothing to do with OUYA but the several other little niggles that affect it are not being addressed.
I think I am going to sell it, I am done waiting for it.. the time multi audio is comming if it even is comming the ouya will be old. The lack of support and community is the other reason.

Ok what I experienced so far is this :
Normally I have my ouya plugged into my TV which is set up to pass aby audio signal through to my home cinema center via optical output. There I never had any issues up to now. Lately I had plugged the ouya into the TV of our bedroom and with xbmc I get audio issues as well.
But vlc and I guess plex as well are able to play ball those files without any issue.
So i guess it's also up to your setup which audio technologies are supported.

I use xbmc on ouya and I have dts and DD passthrough at least on my sony 5.1 home theater. It seems that it depend also from your home theater and/or TV as if you connect the ouya directly to TV and TV doesn't have audio pass through, it will work only analog 2 channel audio.
Good to see someone agreeing to my experiences.

Really? Xbmc on ouya can decode DTS and output 5.1 channels to home theater? I saw a lot of people complained of decoding DTS failure. Be honest, I am frustrated when I saw these comments, because I just ordered one from Amazon and I have a lot of 720P DTS MKV movies. My original thoughts is that connecting ouya to 5.1 home theater. I did saw ouya can output 2.0 or 5.1 surround sound effects on their website. Hoping XBMC V13 could be more perfect.
For some ppl it is working indeed, by switching of amp and turn it on again.
But not for everyone... When I try it I just get same static noise as before...
I never had 5.1 working whatever I tried.
Tried several options in xbmc but it would not change anything

Ouya can decode DTS mkv, I just tested it and my home theater received a PCM audio stream (analog settings on xbmc audio output) and then tested the same mkv with digital signal pass through to my home theater (digital HDMI audio output in xbmc settings) that decoded it fine.
Only thing is that if ouya decode the DTS signal, I have PCM 2 channels audio, if my home theater decode it, I have DTS 5.1 channels audio (my HT is only 5.1).
For the records, I use xbmc 13.0 alpha6 from july 14 2013.

You get static noise because your ouya is passing through the digital signal to your TV or HT to decode the signal. And clearly your receiver is not able to decode the audio stream. You have to change the audio setting output of xbmc to "analog" in order to let xbmc decode it before sending it out to your TV or HT.
