[Q] screen tear - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello developers let me start off by saying thank you for the work you put in to what you do it's helped me enjoy android and feel proud of owning these devices. Now I have been a lurker for a while and have rooted and rom'd my previous phone (HTC glacier) and it was wondrous. I recently bought a nexus 7 and am amazed with the machine but I did have a slight screen issue when I got it
The screen had a black line going horizontally when held in portrait mode that only showed up on the home screens and in google maps (but only in portrait mode it did not appear in landscape mode) This caused me to do a bit of research and i found people who had the same problem that said it was all gravy once a new kernel was installed.
This of course led me to rooting installing the MadaCo Custom Rom Jr2 (have a 3g 32gig model) and running the motley kernel 3.1.20. Installed overclocked but nothing happened and was confused.
after installing some games and talktone i found that once the games got faster paced white started flashing through the colors and when connected through talk tone a white diagonal line appears on the screen. Not only that but i also noticed that if i put apps on the top row in my home screen, when i go to slide over to the next page the colors of the app shows up in the black line.
I was wondering if this is hardware issue or if their is something i can do on the software end. If it's hardware and i have to return it to google i'd appreciate any info i should know about warranty as well as being pointed in the direction i need to go in order return in to stock 4.2 and locked (I'm a noob whose only rooted twice when trying to push the motley kernel onto my nexus 7 i accidentally went into the the side load in cwm and had about 10 failed attempts before i could give it the proper push command to install the kernel)
any advice or help would be greatly appreciated sorry to take your time out with something so basic but I'm doing what I can to learn

screen non responsive after wake up

Had my vega for just 3 days, i left it on charge on the first night and when i tried to use it the morning after the touch screen was more or less completely dead, only a 1" stripdown the left side in landscape mode was responding to touch so i couldn't even unlock it without using the wake then press the back button method - even then the screen was non responsive.
I did a reboot hoping this would solve it but no change, anyway after leaving it off for half an hour and rebooting the screen started to work again and I had no further issues that day.
that night i let it go to sleep again and had the same issue again this morning, the screen was non responsive after a prolonged( 6hour ) sleep
this time i decided to see if it was software so put it into nvboot mode and flashed the modaco rom, - after getting the new rom up and running the screen was still lazy, serious dead spots in terms of touch, i let it go to sleep for a few hours in the afternoon and tonight the touch is not working again.
I bought it online from dixons, and tbh the box appeared to have already been opened when i got it.
I'm starting to think its a faulty unit with a serious hardware fault - has anyone else experienced the same - did you find a fix?
Have you tried running the screen calibration tool, i think it is included in the modaco rom. I have not had anything as serious as you seem to have (only a slight dead spot in the bottom left corner of the screen, which the tool fixed) might be worth a go, if you have not tried it, before getting a exchange.
thanks Ganjaman, cant get the darn thing past the accept terms and conditions screen after a fresh install of stock rom because i cant press the accept button because its in a non responsive part of the touch screen.
dont think i have any option but to return it

Bad luck! Hope you can get a exchange in-store.
Have flashed the new 1.09 rom and it seems to have fixed the screen issue.
What was interesting. Was that if I warmed the tablet up slightly near a heater the screen would slowly start working again. Ganjaman, will your 1.08 update add market to 1.09
I am going to remake it for v1.09 shortly, i need to remove flash change the build.prop and i am going to add usb switcher. Glad you sorted it.

G2 Screen Issue

I'm having a really strange issue with my G2.
The screen will not turn on unless i'm booted in to Android (i'm running Virtuous Unity, probably the first or second build but i'm not sure exactly which one. Have been holding off on upgrading to a newer build due to this issue but can't take it anymore).
My screen no longer turns on at the boot screen (so I don't see the green HTC logo on a white background when I turn my phone on), no longer see the screen when trying to load into Clockwork Mod either (doing an adb devices command confirms the phone is in recovery, but the screen does not turn on so I can't see it).
Really am at a loss as for what to do. Don't think the screen itself is busted because if it was, it wouldn't work when the phone is booted into Android.
Looks like the same issue someone else had here:

Difference being I rooted using the gfree method and am not running CM 7

Screen shifted to the right?

Hi guys
I am the happy owner of a hacked through Galaxy Tab 10.1 3g running the latest CM9 build from Pershoot (0419) and I had a weird experience with it today.
It has a bug where sometimes the lock screen doesn't accept touches and the screen does not go entirely black (it just dimms) when I press the power button. All I have to do to fix it is force close and reboot the tab. But this time it woke up and got seriously ****ed.
While still showing the Samsung logo the entire screen suddenly shifted 1/3 to the right and stayed like that all the way into Android, through CM9 boot animation and all. All touches registered in the right places, but everything on screen was off. I shot a little video (with my GNex) so you guys can see what I am talking about:
http://youtu.be/cAeRxt36Vuw
Has anyone else experienced this? Or is it just me?
As you see in the video, it went away after a reboot...
you dont even need to do all that.
1. plug in usb
or
2. let the screen turn off, hit power once, unlock.
kernel 0425, and kernel 0426 should sort any remaining touchscreen issues.
the shifted screen is an anomaly on your specific tab for this incident.
go to droidbasement, grab 0425 kernel (will be refreshing 0426 tonight after investigating one incident so i wouldnt flash it), flash it, and youll be ok.

[Q] Broken display

Hello all,
(First of all, if you watch the video you will understand what I'm trying to explain here, but I wasn't able to make myself very clear, secondly I don't have support from asus/google in my country)
I've been using my nexus 7 for almost 4 months and haven't had any problems with it until now. When I upgraded to 4.2 I noticed that the speakers sound was strange sometimes, but most of the time it worked just fine. But today something very sad happened
When I unlocked the tablet I realized it was in my sister's user (I was already at launcher's "home"), so I locked it in order to switch to my user, but when I pressed the unlock button, the screen wasn't normal, it went crazy. I couldn't see anything, just shades of black and white (see video above for details). After that I tried anything but the the screen was the same. Something important to mention is that the screen responds normal to touch input, so I can unlock, open menu, recent apps, etc only by knowing where to touch. I'm even able to turn it off by holding power button and then choosing "yes, reboot tablet" without being able to see anything on the screen.
It worth mention that after several reboots, screen locks/unlocks I manege to get the screen to work perfectly for a couple of minutes, but when I locked the tabled the screen stopped working again.
My question is: DO you guys think that this is a screen problem, some wires that aren't well connected or even maybe Android OS problem? And would it worth it to buy a new screen and try to find someone to change it for me or I should just throw it in the trash?
PS: The tablet is completely stock now, just rooted and with busybox, no OC, no GPU OC, etc...

Try flashing a factory image. If that doesn't work, it's most likely a hardware issue. You should be able to get warranty service if that's the case.

Edit: Missed the part about no support from Google/Asus. Disregard the warranty statement.
Sent from my Nexus 7 w/ PA and m-kernel
Problem kind of solved

Thanks for the answer. I decided to do that (even though I didn't think it would solve the issue).
I turned off the tablet and booted into recovery by holding vol up and down + power and guess what??? when it booted into recovery the screen was perfect again, I could see all information about the tablet, lock state, etc. I decide to reboot it and it has been working normally for a couple of hours from now, I have even made some benchmarks and everything was ok.
Now I'm more confused than before: Hardware or OS problem? The tablet is working now, so I'll just backup all my titanium backup data to my pc and leave USB debugging on, so if the problem returns I'll just flash stock again.
EDIT: After some hours the screen problem returned. I flashed 4.2.1 and the problem was still there. I guess I'll just have to find someone who will open my tablet and see if the wires are properly connected.

What is wrong with my screen?

I had a Korean LG G2 for a week a while back. However, on the 7th day the screen exhibit some strange problems. Which I returned it to the seller.
I've tried to google this problem but I (1) cannot find the right search terms and (2) do not see anyone with this problem. I was on a custom rom and flashed it back to stock rom but the problem persists. It feels like a mix of overheat and faulty screen.
As you can tell the clock widget is "stuck" on several screens (even recovery). If I put the phone in the fridge or leave it untouched overnight it reverts back to normal and usable for 15 mins then the problems comes up again.
I want to ask what is this problem and is it prevalent in korean LG G2?
I really like LG G2 but fear of buying another one that has this same problem.
Anyone has any ideas?
Yesterday I've noticed similar problem, I use swiftkey with a red theme and white letters (I don't think it's app's fault) and after displaying it for some time and then switching to other screen it looks like the keyboard is "burned" on the screen. It's not visible on color background but on medium light gray it's easy to seen. After some time without using keyboard it disappears.

It seems that this is similar to the black line issue some people had. If you have warranty send it back. I think only way to fix is to change the panel and/or digitizer
Before you send it back, have you downloaded any new ROMs? Flashed CWM/TWRP? Because when I did the following I had a problem similar to that. It appeared that whatever my phone was running did not support my type of screen, therefore I downloaded a specific type of Kernel that fixed it right up. If you think this applies to you I will try to dig up what Kernel it was.
