What is wrong with my screen? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had a Korean LG G2 for a week a while back. However, on the 7th day the screen exhibit some strange problems. Which I returned it to the seller.
I've tried to google this problem but I (1) cannot find the right search terms and (2) do not see anyone with this problem. I was on a custom rom and flashed it back to stock rom but the problem persists. It feels like a mix of overheat and faulty screen.
As you can tell the clock widget is "stuck" on several screens (even recovery). If I put the phone in the fridge or leave it untouched overnight it reverts back to normal and usable for 15 mins then the problems comes up again.
I want to ask what is this problem and is it prevalent in korean LG G2?
I really like LG G2 but fear of buying another one that has this same problem.
Anyone has any ideas?

Yesterday I've noticed similar problem, I use swiftkey with a red theme and white letters (I don't think it's app's fault) and after displaying it for some time and then switching to other screen it looks like the keyboard is "burned" on the screen. It's not visible on color background but on medium light gray it's easy to seen. After some time without using keyboard it disappears.

It seems that this is similar to the black line issue some people had. If you have warranty send it back. I think only way to fix is to change the panel and/or digitizer

Before you send it back, have you downloaded any new ROMs? Flashed CWM/TWRP? Because when I did the following I had a problem similar to that. It appeared that whatever my phone was running did not support my type of screen, therefore I downloaded a specific type of Kernel that fixed it right up. If you think this applies to you I will try to dig up what Kernel it was.

Screen fades out to White frequently!

Hi,
On my TyTN the scren just fades out to white frequently when for instance typing something, just happens in the middle of using the hermes, I have used many of the various WM6 builds, and mostly Black Editions, I noticed thsi isssue after I had upgraded to Black 3.01 firstly, now yesterday I flashed to Black IV Shadow, and now it does it much more frequently than before....I wonder if it could be hardware related or is it a known bug in the Black releases ?
When this happens I must press the power button several times and all of a sudden the screeen comes back to normal again. Sometimes even a hardreset is the only solution.
Was thinking of going back to the orginal WM5 ROM just to see if it helps any, or maybe I should send it in to repair center as it still is under warranty (apart from me upgrading to various dev builds that is )
Any inputs very welcome.
thx / fahlis
HTC TyTN
WM6 Black IV Shadow
Used to happen to me using the original ROM. It appeared to happen as the machine got hot which tended to be while it was charging and I was using it.
I did a warranty replacement, and hadn't had the problem since (months).
Still on original factory ROM.
Started happening to me yesterday. Called Cingular and they wanted me to do a hard reset etc. I didn't tell them I had a cooked ROM. I knew it was a hardware issue. Just got my new phone today. Downloaded the new ATT build. Installed no problem. Shipping it back to them tomorrow.
Sorry guys. There are existing threads on the fading to white issue. Please use the Search XDA using Google sticky thread near the top of the messages queue.

Can't unlock - just relocks and goes black

My rooted 32GB has just started doing this (2nd time this has occurred now). When I try to unlock, it just makes a click sound and relocks and blacks the screen. The first time resolved itself. Not sure if a reboot will help (probably so), but wondering if anyone has seen this or has any suggestions.

Is there any magnet near the N7? (if you have case, maybe the it is not working to well, most of the case is not prepared for daily use )
Ábel
Does the screen turn on and everything looks fine, but there is no touch response at all? Do the hard buttons prompt the menu's like power down and volume control but there is absolutely no touch input? I am asking these questions because if it is doing this you are having the same issue as me, I had been working on this issue for a solid month with absolutely no luck and the issue kept getting more frequent.I have re-flashed stock Google images both 4.1 and 4.2 with absolutely no luck. After the clean installs I did not root it I left the it completely stock and the issue is still there, also I thought it may have been my Poetic magnet case, well i took it out of the case and it still does it. I even removed my $20.00 dollar Steinheil Ultra Crystal Screen Protector thinking that may have something to do with it but that's not the issue. After every reboot it will work fine, so I was completely frustrated and could not find that many people on line with this issue. I finally had to send mine back to ASUS and they stated it was a screen assembly issue and they could replicate the problem, well I got it back last week and five minutes after booting it up the issue is still there so needless to say I have to RMA it again. What really bugs me is the Nexus 7 worked fine for two months not one problem then, I left it in a cabinet for 2 days without touching it and that's when the issue started and it has just gotten worse.
I apologize for the long story if this is not your issue but I just wanted to save you a lot of hassle if it is.
My issue isn't as complicated, fortunately for me. The screen is black (even though cover, with magnet, is open). I hit the power button once to get the screen to light up and slide the unlock. It looks normal but only flashes for an instant, then makes the click and the screen goes black again.
It self resolved again, so I actually am suspecting that it could be that when the case is folder over, the magnet may possibly be causing this. So thanks for that suggestion. Next time it happens I'll be looking specifically for that to see if I can narrow it down.

[Q] Black screen, no boot, random vibration

Ok, so my Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 won't boot up. Pretty common situation by what i have read on this and other forums so far but mine seems to behave a little different.
Since I've had the device it sometimes just randomly rebooted without any obvious reason but since it only occured once in a few month i did not investigate this any further.
Yesterday it suddenly got really slow when using some normal apps, nothing special (not like a little slow when the cpu is heavily used, but really really slow) it took about one minute for it to close any app and going back to the home screen etc, everything while still recording my actions so when it became unstuck just doing everything i tried in the meantime really fast, then again blocking. So far so good after a reboot that took 5 minutes (even the boot animation appeared extremely slow and fragmented) everything seemed normal.
Until it just freezed while i tried to make a phone call, during which it never dialed but just displaying the dialing animation, although i could switch back to the home screen and back to the "call" i could not end it or cancel it or anything, the phone behaved normal but the call stayed.
Then i tried rebooting it ...
... now it seems to be a brick, nothing will work it won't start up in any mode neither recovery, nor normal, nor download mode nothing.
After a few hours in the charger (i just left it there) suddenly the (untill then black) screen displayed the charging animation, when i tried to boot it then it just went back to a black screen.
After another hour it just started vibrating out of nowhere (and just stopped when i removed the battery).
Thats it, do you have any ideas on that ?
Some other info on the phone :
- rooted stock rom Android 4.4.2 from Vodafone
- tried adb, odin, but no connection to any pc possible at the moment
You have a faulty battery or some other damaged hardware.
Try to see if it boots with an other battery, if that fails then you have hardware damage.
Thanks for your quick reply! I'm going to try a different battery now ...
What ever happened with this? My wife's S4 started doing the exact same thing.

Oh, well I'm sorry I forgot to update the status here.
So I followed the instructions here and bought a new battery, unfortunately the problems didn't disappear.
As the S4 wasn't usable I sent it in to the repair service, which replaced the faulty electronic parts (the Mainboard as I guess). The defect was covered by the warranty in my case.
I don't know how I could help you here, in case the repair might not be covered by your warranty I would try replacing the battery.
Good luck

You could flash stock rom with nexus rom toolkit to discard a software problem but if the problem persists, it sounds like a hardware issue and you should think about ordering a replacement if your N4 is still in warranty.

If back to stock fails too, you might try this mod to increase touchscreen sensitivity, but be careful I think only works on 4.2.2

If the issue is the same while at the recovery I am afraid to tell this is most certainly a hardware issue. You can try and install other kernels and mess around with screen sensitivity but I don't think it will help.

this is weird, I came here to ask for the same exact problem. I also have a part of the touch screen unresponsive, although at the very bottom (navbar unusable, I'm trying to make do with Pie Controls for now, god bless these guys. Highly recommended). Since the problem persists on recovery I though that alone ruled out a software fault, but it seems I'm not alone. I'm trying to understand, did it happen *just* after you guys upgraded or after a while? I'm on 4.4.4 since it came out and my display started acting weird only a couple days ago.
Also, did you receive any warning / strange behaviour before complete unresponsiveness? My screen seemed to registered "phantom presses" at the bottom margin of the display (in developers options I have activated the "show touches" feature), it seemed like I was on a swiping frenzy through the whole margin.

I noticed looking through google's official help forum that users affected by this generally have also experienced some sort of energy dispersion / bad isolation from whether the battery or the charging port, it's not clear. Namely, it seems that while charging from either a wall plug or a laptop / computer ghost touch phenomena and the like are more likely to happen. I can confirm these issues, although I didn't give them that much thought when they showed up.
(Also, it seems the majority of users have problem at the bottom of the screen / "nav bar").

This happens way too often. The wall charging socket at my workplace makes my phone go nuts whenever I connect it there. Touches are misunderstood (typing for instance is a bloody nightmare. Home button or recents button get "pressed" automatically). I've never seen this problem anywhere else. Looks like I'm not the only one. Hm!

Funnily enough, this phantom touches nonsense sometimes happened even when the phone was in my pocket. It would unlock the screen itself (Hellscore kernel allows swipe2wake, so phone would wake itself up) and start registering touches frenetically. The screen would refuse to acknowledge my touches; I was repeatedly forced to hard reboot the phone. This problem magically fixed itself, and reappeared a fortnight later. It turned out to be a digitizer issue; after getting the display replaced, I have no more issues. All is fine except for the mysterious wall charger touches.
Looks like my N4 loves to be touched. Dirty little boy.

Hello everybody,
I'm Maria, I came here looking for a not too much expensive solution to repair my broken glass and my touchscreen but I foud out I have the same problem ; a band in the middle of the screen is unresponsive. But my problem come out after my poor nexus fell to the ground :crying:
Now I wonder if this is closely linked to the impact with the ground or it could be the same as your problem?
Hi guys!
I had the same issue - navigation bar was untochable in any position (vertical & horizontal). Flashing stock & other alternative ROMs did not solve the problem.
So I returned my N4 to my seller. He accepted the warranty issue and replaced during the reparation:
1. Screen. So I have a brand new screen.
2. Mother board. So I have a new IMEI.
So this isue is rare and has hardware reasons.
My dad has the same issue on his phone, only happened the other day
Happens in TWRP as well
i flashed Philz CWM and the nav keys work there, also in purity if you set the nav bar to 52 (stock is 48 i believe) the nav keys SLIGHTLY work
its weird because the nav keys dont work, yet i can swipe up and get google now?

The swipe up is triggered by a point just above the home button. The bar has no work there.

I been getting less and less of this after factory reset. One thing i learn is to keep my phone cool and also taking off the case. I figure that the overheating a tight grip on the phone is causing the phone to have these seizure like symptoms. Anyone know a rom i can flash to converse battery and keep my phone from overheating?

Could you wake up the screen? Maybe it's a connection problem or related to the proximity sensor?
Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I have exactly the same problem, but it happens only with Android 9.0. Oreo seems to be working OK, but as soon as I upgrade to official 9.0, the screen won't wake up from sleep. The backlight turns on, but the screen stays black. The phone works OK as long as I use it, but if I press the power button or let it to enter "standby mode", it will stay that way (off). I suppose it has something to do with the replacement screen, but since it works with 8.0, I wish there was a workaround to get the LCD to work with Pie too.
Same problem here. Replaced display too.
I've had a similar issue with a different device before (ZTE nubia Z7 mini). I replaced the screen and it would work correctly, but when I booted TWRP, I would get a black screen. I figured that because the replacement screen was not an OEM one, it may have something to do with LCD drivers in the recovery. I used the old cracked screen with the device opened up to navigate in the TWRP recovery, and I flashed an newer/different recovery. Voila, the new recovery worked with my replacement screen. Based on this experience, it may just be an LCD driver compatibility issue with the replacement screen, causing the screen to just go into forever sleep mode. The driver may need to be changed or tweaked in the Pie version for your replacement screen to work with it. Just a thought, not fully certain.

You're probably right about the driver issue. My OP5 has no problems whatsoever with Android 8.1, but 9.0 won't work no matter what I do after waking up the device. The backlight turns on and and off for a few times after which nothing happens. The phone is still working normally, but it's in "blind mode" (music will continue playing, volume buttons work...but they're kind of slow and laggy) Too bad that the latest update (9.01) didn't fix this issue either. I really wouldn't hold my breath getting this issue fixed anytime soon (officially) as it seems to be a cheap 3rd party screen problem.
edit: I tried the custom recovery (20181227) and the same thing happens there. Once screen goes off, it won't come back on.
Edit 2: gave up on the replacement screen and ordered an oem lcd. Lets see how it goes.

Do keep us updated if changing the display again fixes this issue. Would be interesting if someone had a fix for 3rd party displays but as of now it seems that's highly unlikely

Sure.
Got the new OEM amoled screen today. It's brighter, more responsive and doesn't get stuck (black screen) with Android Pie. Problem solved. Price was 3 x higher than the cheap 3rd party screens, but definitely worth it (around 80 euros). All screen gestures work as well.
Bought it on Witrigs (https://www.witrigs.com/oem-lcd-screen-assembly-for-oneplus-5-midnight-black). it came really well packed and arrived fast (7-10 days to Finland). I highly recommend this screen and Witrigs to everyone
Also changed the screen from a friend and have this strange behavior, that the screen won't turn on .. only when I reboot or double press the power button so it launches the camera - the delay tho is about 7s, which is insane! you guys think this is the screen problem, or did I damage something and if yes, what? I repaired about 100 phones in total already ..

Sounds a lot like my OP5 with cheap 3rd party screens which would hardly work at all with Android Pie. If your friend's phone is running on Pie, try downgrading it to Oreo and see if that helps. My phone worked moderately with Oreo but not at all with Pie (wake and touch issues). Currently my OP5 is running Android Pie perfectly with the screen that I bought on Witrigs.

Bizarre, have you tried the usual factory reset / rom reflash? If you confirm that its not a software related issue, then it probably is just the screen if its not an OEM part. Can't see what else would be the issue here unless there was other kind of damage before the repair maybe
Like @sbasil mentioned, it could just be due to the non-OEM screen being incompatible with Pie drivers.
Thank you for saving my phone

Mine not working with lineage base rom but is good with last pie 9.0.8. Did you try it?
Have this issue too
My OP5 has its original AMOLED screen. Running OS 9.0.8. This started happening after the most recent update. At least I never noticed it before.
I ran *#808# diagnostics, thinking maybe it's the proximity sensor, or the fingerprint scanner, but everything passed.
Also while locked, ambient display works. It's just getting the Home screen to appear after waking the phone that's become agonizing. And it does wake, the touch screen is responsive, it's just completely blind.
I mean consider this: I can take a screen shot, a screen shot, while the screen is in ambient display and the screen shot is of the home screen.
Pressing the power button or home button or notification slider repeatedly sometimes coaxes it to appear, but the only sure way to get the Home screen back is to restart the phone.
I had a black screen issue after changing the screen to an OEM AMOLED one, and after tearing my hair out for a couple of hours, I discovered that turning off " night mode" fixed the problem instantly
Same happened to me... cracked screen, purchased 'OEM screen' installed. Some apps work, some just black screen.
Driver issue? Running Pie 9x. Anyone had success with this by dropping back to Oreo? Would it do anything different to flash the Pie Firmware?

Now they need one to arrange job interviews and housing, things of that nature. So anyways, all that to say this.... I have replaced a LOT of displays, and all of them were the 'cheap' ebay variety. Each and every time I would replace the display, the phone would act just as described in this thread.
After long hours of reading, searching, and experimenting, I have found the ultimate and final solution to this problem. The answer to this issue is simple, but was not so simple to find. Whenever anyone does a screen replacement, and the screen is not the high-priced OEM variety, their phone will almost always have extreme difficulty in waking. The fix, and it has worked for me 100% of the time, is to flash a custom kernel. For the OP5/5T the kernel I use that always works is the Affinity kernel. Just flash and forget. The phone will always wake up after you flash that kernel.
However, don't forget, that what also happens with these lower priced replacement screens is that you can no longer double-tap to wake. I still haven't found a solution for that problem, but it always happens each time I replace a screen. The kernel won't help with that. But it does fix the 'won't wake up' problem.
Try it for yourself and see. You will be happy you did!

I'm not clear about what you are asking. What exactly are you calling FW?? Some people mean radio and camera firmware. Some people mean the custom rom that gets flashed. What do you mean?
