I am back on lps after spending a few months on nelp4 and xxls6. Latter drain battery. Although xxls6 gave me 5mbps max there was so much switching between h and h+.
Lps is good on speed and battery.
Currently using android xxlq3 with xxlps on three UK.
Any one else had any experience with the three modems on three UK?

I've used all three on EE in the UK (Formerly T-Mobile).
I live inbetween two masts, my property has a terrible material for the signal to pass through the property. Therefore on one side of the property it uses one mast and on the other it uses the other... the one mast is 2g and the other is 3g... this as we know is a terrible combination for our phones modem, especially with some modem software files.
I have used lps and get a moderate change between masts, and a relatively good signal, although it drops off too many times for my liking.
I have used XXLQ6 (it's not ls6 mate) this in my opinion is a pathetic modem, very low chance of getting any signal, one bar at the most, and the change between masts is atrocious.
I have used nelp4 and nelp3, there is not much difference between them, although maybe in my opinion nelp3 is better. Both modem give me at least 2 bars in my property, they switch between masts at a good rate, and the signal I get on the 3g mast is fast and stable, the signal on the 2g mast does not drop out during calls, although sometimes the signal will break up occasionally.
Currently I am using the leak 4.1.2 firmware with it's modem, although the signal is not as good as the nelp3 and nelp4 modems for data speed, and for signal strength, I'm able to make and receive calls and texts and have rare signal drop issues.
Thanks mate for your valuable input. Xxls6 is the new modem from leaked jb. I found high data speeds but more battery drain and switching.

Sorry mate, get you now, just so many doughnuts around, and for once I was one of them.
I agree with you on the leaked modem, however being that I'm on the leak firmware, thought is give it a long test. In my property it does not like the 2g mast, hence the signal drops, but holds a wider range on the 3g mast for longer

3G or WIFI?

Wifi uses the most, then 3G, and then EDGE uses the least. Usually WiFi is faster than 3G for me though.

I guess there's some bug in the firmware then... coz wifi always drains the battery more than 3g for me.. even though I know its supposed to be the other way around
It should also be noted that if you're in a poor coverage area then flapping between 2G and 3G signal can be a real nice battery slayer.
At work we have some awesome dead zones that can nuke a battery pretty quickly. We always make sure to disable 3G if we sit around that area.... or leave a colleague's phone there if we feel like being a bunch of dicks
My girlfriend and I both have Nexus S 4G's so I decided to update mine and leave hers at 2.3.4 until I ran some tests. Here is what I concluded after about an hour of testing at home:
Signal strength was improved by around 10db
3G download speeds were 60% faster
3G upload speeds were 40% faster
It's important to note that the Speedtest.net app does not work properly on the Nexus S 4G. To get accurate results, you should use the Speakeasy Speed Test through your phone's web browser, or, tether your computer to your phone and run any speed test from your computer.
I haven't had a chance to test 4G but I am anticipating a big improvement.
Marco
PS. Sorry for the crappy photos taken on my old Evo 4G
It's impossible to rate 3G speed performance increases based off a radio update accurately. Sprints 3G network is such a pile of crap you could get 1mb a second one minute
and this garbage the next.
I tested it a few times over an hour period and got the same results. Beyond that I don't have the time to waste running further tests.
Sorry to hear you get crappy speeds.
did you do any testing on wifi signal strength?
I was getting 2.6 mbps dl at home before update. 60% of that would be crazy. Im on miui atm and idk if im going to update if it blocks tether.

I didn't test Wifi and unfortunately I just updated her phone to 2.3.5!
Most importantly, how is the signal acquisition? One severe problem I faced is that signal is extremely patchy in areas that should not be patchy at all
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
i know it stuffed all sorts of baby unicorns into 4g speeds, previously id average 1.4 down and up.. now i get 2.6 down and 1.7 up
I installed the update via this forum and I have zero signal bars and my airave is 20 feet away if that. My wifi signal indicator jumps around from weak to strong but is mainly weak. I don't know what the deal is, I'm not trying to scare anyone. Its just annoying me.
Is there anyway I can remove this update? I've never done any kind of rooting on my nexus s 4G

OK so I did some playing around with my phone. It seems like everytime I start to make a call I immediately get 2 or 3 bars. Kinda strange.

Do you have the older airave that is only 1x data? If so, it's displaying the 3G bars when not using 1x (either sms or call). You'll never miss a call due to signal if that's the case. It used to be that way for me when I had the older unit (just got the newer 3G airave, and now it's full bars all of the time).

3G signal has become worse for me on the new Radio. I'm now stuck on 1X in my home when I used to be decent 3G.
This sucks.
I'm running rooted 2.3.5 with Matrix 4.0 kernel.
Before update:
WIFI was 4.9 down 4.3 up
4G was 3.6 down 1.5 up
3G was 325 kps down 100 up
After Update:
WIFI is 7.2 down 1.5 up
4G is 4.5 down 1.5 up
3G is 550kps down 100 up
I ran each test a few times.

My 3G speeds before were around 100kbps before the update, and around that now. Sprint is the worst carrier in the whole damn planet. I just check my Evo and it has around 300kbps tops... pathetic. Sprint if you are reading this, you ****ing SUCK
I just got 2.16 megs on my airwave. I used the speakeasy test. Before I could hardly get .8 mbps.

Why is that the case?
2.3.4
3G 300kbps-1000kbps depending on location
4G max 5.5Mbps
Wifi max 6Mbps
2.3.5
3G 500kbps-1200kbps depending on location
4G max 7.5Mbps (!!!)
Wifi max 8Mbps
It seems like to me that one person says it helps and then the next says it sucks so I think I'm just going to leave well enough for now because i have mine on Boost and really don't feel like setting up data and mms again...wouldn't be hard but from the looks of things it really doesn't look like its worth it.

They are both built by ookla labs i'm with you on this one, if everyone uses speedtest app its clearly going to show any changes.
I'm trying the new kg6 modem in Cyanogenmod and miui rom, since I've 2 galaxy s for testing. I notice a very speedy call connecting, seems to be very better different from the good kg3.
So you notice it too?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
i have done now speedtest. With kg3 download speed 1600kb now 2100kb. Upload 1400 and now 1600.
Also little 3g h h+ fixed, now swapping only one time when you use the mobile data.
And also seems to be that reception signal bar have got a different calibration (or more device sensibility to mobile signal)

Anyone got a link to the modem zip file?
i tried this modem and it drained my battery like mad compared to kg3/kf2 that i have used before this one.
data speeds were ok but signal was really really low hence the draining of my battery .
KG6 improved broadband connectivity a lot for me, always getting "H" now. It's true that its draining more battery, but I also installed Lite'ning v5 ROM (which is KG6 based), so I can't tell exactly if the extra battery drain is only due to the modem component of the KG6 release or to some other custom-kernel related issues.
I'm not sure if it's placebo effect or not. But it does seem improve the 3G, H+ speed quite a bit. I'm with AT&T in NYC but just did a test, the download speed broke 5mbps for the first time ever.
My 3G connection has sped up significantly and I am also finding that I have reception in places that I usually would not.
YAYY
Yes, my signal seems to be much better than KG2 and this was the first time i got a 7.5mbps download speed.
I use KG6 and have no excess battery drain .
|I have an increase of about 10% in WiFi strength over KG3 .
jje
Best for me so far,had no probs with it draining the batt.
I downloaded and installed this modem on my SGS1, and it worked. More than worked, it was amazing. Problem is now that I'm reading about it, potentially was a mistake and harmful to the phone. Any thoughts?
You will probably be ok with a modem on SGS1 ..
KH3 faster for me in all tests .
jje
How does it compare to KH3?
here is the zip file

I doubt anyone cares, really.
well, was certainly worth bumping a 3 month old thread for this.
Hi I just got this phone and the reception is actually very good. I've moved and where I'm at no gsm phone gets any decent reception but the nexus 4 somehow does get a slight signal -113 to -107 db. If I root it are there options for me to increase the milliwatts to get better reception? Is there a case that is better for reception? If I leave it on a desk with the speaker on the signal is -107 but if I use my hand it drops to -113. Thanks
The only thing that alters reception, at least as far as software, is the radio version. You might try different radios. I doubt it will do much, though
The older radios don't drop data as often. As far as a better signal I don't see much of a difference

radio doesn't drop calls much I'm on .48 is there one that is considered better? Calls are more important to me that any other connections
When your on wifi or don't need data like at home have the phone use only 2g network. It has a much better reception I have to do this when I am home and on the main floor or basement and works well for me

increasing the milliwatts as you call it will increase power output. Thats for transmitting.
What you are asking is for receiving. Short of testing other radios, or using an external antenna there isnt much that can be done.
The only ways to improve your cell service are;
T-Mobile Cel-Fi Signal Boosters http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4683
If you don't qualify, check out http://cel-fi.com/ or http://www.wilsonamplifiers.com/t-mobile/
or get a AT&T MVNO SIM card. Good service on a awful carrier is still better than awful service on a good carrier.
I switched from the Z1 to the LG G2 because my WiFi strenght was weak, and this is after having two different units. Can anyone confirm if the upgrade to 4.3 has changed this?
My G2 has full bars in throughout my entire house, the Z1 disconnected and was often very low, I want to get the z1 back but want to make sure they fixed this problem.
Thanks.
Wifi seems stronger. In my back yard I used to get one bar. Now it's 3

I've got stronger wifi too. Before I had 1-2 bars in my room, now I have 4, sometimes 3 bars
yes. it used to be 1 bar on 4.2.2, after 4.3 update its full showing

Stronger
Definitely better WiFi, on 4.2.2 I used to get 1 bar max on my room, now I get get 2-3 most of the time without drops in signal.
For me the bars used to be 0-1 with no drop outs now it's showing 1-2 and I'm lucky to be able to load anything. I now need full bars so it has a stable connection.

Before I had a three-antenna NetGear router and got no bars in my room, but now I have full bars, and three about 10 meters up the garden. Definitely improved. I actually thought my phone was dodgy but it has better reception than my Galaxy S3 now.
Same here as with others; much better reception after the update. Used to see no to one bar in my bedroom, now I have one to two bars.

WiFi is stronger but Mobile signal is bad (lost mobile signal, have turn my phone off then on and everything is fine, didnt experice this on 4.2.2)
I feel actual wifi strength is same.
Its just they changed the UI value to show more signals.
A bit of fooling going on maybe.
I dont see a point that an increase in 2 bars is legit.

i never used to catch my cousin's wifi on 4.2.2 but after this update i can easily connect to his network and there are 1-2 bars showing
and for my own wifi, used to get only 1 bar before and now its full
loving this update
I agreed with that . It gets stronger.
It's a good news.waiting for 4.3 OTA...

It is not a hoax and I can actually approve that.
Using inSSIDer and the dbm showed a significant decrease in interference with no movement in any furniture or networks around. It has been pretty consistent on what it was before 4.3(85dbm on my 5Ghz band) and now it is at 65dbm which is a lot closer with my laptop which is on 51dbm
So there is definitely a wifi boost in this release at least for me.
I can confirm that the wifi signal is strong. With 4.2.2 i never got wifi at my restroom. Now i got 2-3 bars. Als the camera in superior automode is fantastic.

In all honesty the screen, software, battery, one hand use, camera were all better on the g2, but I really like the solid feel and build quality of the z1 so I'm debating on what to do, should be a no brainer and just keep the g2 but the feel and quality of the z1 is just that good. At least for me.
