Dead pixel - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got one dead pixel on my phone. Is this something common on the Nexus 4 ?
What is the policy of google for dead pixels ?
It is hard to notice, but now that i noticed it, it drives me crazy.

Almost everything on sale is a Class II pixel defect group.

I just noticed a dead pixel too. I really dunno if I should RMA it...does anybody know how long the Nexus 4 warranty lasts? And what it covers?

Why don't you check the warranty info in the box..

Class II it is... I guess I will get over it, but it makes me sad for sure. If the product was available i would send it back and get a new one, but that's not exactly a possibility with the Nexus 4.

why not ? they have seperate stock for replacements, my replacement shipped today , also LG have a really good dead pixel warranty for their monitors pretty sure its a zero defect policy in the first 15 days you might want to do a little research they might do the same for mobile devices.

That's if they accept to replace the device for 1 dead pixel. They probably won't. I'm more talking of sending it back (i have the device for less than 7 days), get my money back, and buy a new one.

I finally sent it back for other reasons (phone freezing while playing music and apps crashing), and am really happy to have a phone without broken pixel now. I wouldn't send it back only for that though.

Even if that's the case, many companies, include Google, will replace a phone for a single dead pixel. ASUS has a zero dead pixel/bright dot policy, for example.

Arrggghhh...Not Again..I'm Sick of This..!!!

Seriously...I just can't believe my luck.....been using the replacement Note since Friday after receiving it on Thursday from handtec....
GUESS WHAT???....I have found another TWO black DEAD PIXELS!!!!
I found it when I was browsing through XDA....although they are not very visible....but I can still see them when I look closer to the screen, and they really BUG me....!!
Man...it's either that handtec sells inferior quality Notes or Samsung has done a really bad job with screen quality control...At the end of the day...I am really sick and tired of receiving, returning and receiving and now have to returning it again!!!!
Anyone got any advice what I should do now??? Should I return it again or just bear with it or just give up the Note totally?? I mean, it's quite expensive to send it back again and will probably take another 2 weeks for me to get the replacement.
Take a look at the photos..
cheers!
This phone really does have bad quality... I'm on my third galaxy note now and it too has screen problems like the others had (dead pixels, burn-in effect, banding etc), not only does it have a defective screen but the gyroscope isn't working! I've never had such a bad experience with any other phone in the past, I've come to the conclusion that this phone.. just.. sucks. Oh yeah, I bought an Galaxy S2 for my gf and it too had these problems with the screen. Maybe it's not only Galaxy Note that sucks, but the company Samsung. I've never EVER had problems like these with Sony Ericsson or Apple.

so.....your third one has screen problems too? Is it bad? You have giving up returning it?
Hopefully I will be third time lucky too...
I have never had a problem with Samsung before...but I can't really believe that I can get 2 problem phones in the row....I really believe that maybe Samsung has roll this phone out too quickly and not paying enough attentions on quality...
If you don't mind me asking...who did you buy your phones from and what version are they?
My first one is a Polish and this second one is a German...Both EU versions
Yes, it's really bad. I mean, I could live with the screen issues as the third one wasn't that bad as the first two (not yet hopefully) but the fact that the gyroscope isn't working makes this phone useless, won't be able to use games like labyrinth and won't be able to auto-rotate the screen...
If I remember correctly all of my phones were made in Korea, all of them imported from Germany.
I don't know what caused this but if you just google around for amoled screen issues you will see that this is pretty widespread, with the galaxy S2 too.
Try to get them unstuck before you return it. There are apps for that, you may get lucky and save yourself the pain in the arse.

With my first one...There were 3 green pixels with a line running through them.
With this one...there are 2 small BLACK ones....(i'm pretty sure they are DEAD instead of STUCK)
anyways...what apps do you recommend and how well do they work? I mean, i have tried "JScreenFix" and it didn't work for my first and this one....

so how many dead pixels do you have on this third one? are they big or small?
even though mine are not obvious...but i'm just not happy the fact that I have paid over 700 bucks for something that is defected...that makes me real mad
you know.. when they asked you if they can open it to check if everything is alright, what they really meant was can they send you one that someone else returned which happens to be open already

Because when i got the replacement, only the ticker on one side of the box has been opened, the sticker on the other side hasn't been touched.
Don't have the dead/stuck pixels problems, but I think I regretted getting the GNote...well for some other reasons.

Trust me...I really really want to be one of yous (a happy GNote owner)....but it is really out of my control.....especially when I can't check the phone myself since handtec is in UK....that's why i got them to check it for me before they sent the phone....Plus...I would really not care to return it again....IF I don't have to pay another $70 bucks to send it back and WAIT another 2 weeks to get the replacement back.....
All in all....I have only used the phone total of 2 days...and waited about 3 weeks for the 2 phones to arrive to me.....
hope you guys can really see where I am coming from....
An YES....I will try and ask handtec to see if they can pay for the postage this time + send the replacement to me first so I can check to see myself if there's anything wrong with it before I sent the bad one back...because I am SICK of not be able to use my new phone properly.....(thanks for the advice )

Excuses to return tablet?

Alright I know this mostly isn't related with the tablet but anyway I got the galaxy tab 2 7.0 and I used it for a couple of hours put it in the case and everything. Then I filled up the storage so I put in a 32GB sd card and then I noticed a small chip in the tablet my dad said they wont take it back for such a small thing. any excuses I can say to return it such as it locks up randomly?
Where did you buy it?
Pretty much anything you can think of. WiFi not staying connected, battery issues, locking up/random freezes, etc. But if u only had it for a few days then I'm sure you can return it with no problems if u still have the receipt.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
so you want to lie in order to get it replaced? sounds like your dad is right it's such a small thing just press on and use it
Yeah sure you can, and I did with google too. I only have one dead pixel on my screen and I want a replacement. So yeah I lied some other excuse to make sure they agree and they said sure

Only one dead pixel is still a fault and a good enough reason (a better reason than many, in fact) to send it back without making excuses.
Is it human nature that people feel they have to lie when they don't even need to?

[Q] Is it safe to buy one now?

Considering all the defects Nexus 7 has, is it safe to buy a Nexus 7 now? I've been wanting to have a 7" tablet running with Android. This is basically what I need for Christmas but as I was surfing the Nexus 7 forum and found out everything about the defects, it made me think if I should get one or not.
Got mine at launch, never had an issue. If there is a hardware problem Google will take it back anyway..

That's the problem, I just can't simply return the item because I am living in SEA. I'll be ordering my NX7 online.

Yes you should but definitely buy one from a local retailer if you can. Its way easier to return your device if you ever needed to exchange for another in case of a defect.

What defects? and what makes you think the millions of owners that don't post here, have problems too?
I purchased online upon release. The unit seemed to be in good condition. I returned it within the 14day policy without a hassle either (returned it because I also had an ipad and didnt want to own two tablets.)
I just picked up a new 32gb 7 and it is flawless. This latest build seems to be more solid. It gives the impression that Asus likely tightened up their assembly quality control.

Yea , there are people reporting defects , but like he asked you , what makes you think that a very small percent of owners having issues means that they are poorly manufactured ? People typically don't start threads to say their device is working fine and defect free . Look up how many N7's have been sold vs. how many complaints you see in the posts you linked , I'll bet it is far below 1% defect rate . Just relax and stop worrying about it , if you want one , get it . You are never going to get a 100% guarantee that every device made will be defect free .

Ouch, that looks horrible. I would have definitely RMA'd that as well myself. Mine is also "nearly perfect" and has two very small areas of backlight bleed but nowhere near as dramatic as yours and I don't think that I'll be RMA-ing mine for that alone.

Pretty much normal for LCD displays, you can always get screen bleed to appear when viewing in the dark and at high/full brightness, it is a limitation of the technology. When you have it on auto or sensible brightness and use the phone normally can you notice it? If the answer is no, don't worry about it.
Regards
Phil
I can see it ocasionaly. For example, when I started up I saw google logo and could see it perfectly...

I wouldnt be surprised if the RMA was returned because of screen bleed and then they sent it to you and hoped you wouldnt notice. Every RMA is probably an old return since they dont even have new ones to sell.
Did you get the RMA right away or did you have to wait awhile? If it was right away then it must be a faulty return.
It took 5 days. Now that you say this.. Phone had some dirt and had finguerprints tho "i was the first one to open it"

I bought three Nexii on November 27th and all three had screen bleed. I can't see OP's pictures to compare but each phone has a ~1/4" area of bleed with one phone having two. This has only been visible when playing a movie and a black screen is shown at the beginning. I don't notice it at boot up, for instance.
I don't know if this bothers me enough to RMA yet. My thinking is to punt the issue into next year, wait for supply to catch up with demand, and then RMA for a new unit. Two of my Nexii are going to relatives so unless they notice it, I don't think I'll bother RMAing them.
I remember seeing someone mention in a thread that LG can't seal an LCD to save their skins and that person is knowledgeable, in retrospect. The issue looks exactly like some adhesive wasn't applied or pressed down evenly during assembly. I wouldn't be surprised if assembly by hand is the cause of the problem, due to expediency in order to fulfill existing orders.

You cannot seriously believe they do this? They have separate batches for new sales and RMA.
I agree with everything u said. Mine has 3 bleeds 2 on top and one on the top left. Im not going to RMA my N4 though its a non win either way so many people get stuck in a RMA cycle. If your phones are good other than light bleeds ID stick with them. But that's your call good luck with everything.

You have one year for manufacturer defects. Please hold off at least a few more weeks on RMA so people whose devices develop issues that seriously affect functionality can get a replacement quickly.

My guess is that it's common practice. I know I've RMA'd devices to other manufacturers and gotten back "refurbished" devices. I'd be surprised if the refurbish process is any more complicated than booting it and looking for cracks in the glass.
A certain percentage of all electronics will be returned. A subset of those are perfectly functional devices. This is a function of having variable intelligence in the population. Now, rather than spend resources to determine which exactly of those returns are actually pristine devices that the mouthbreathers couldn't decipher, if the percentage in a sample is high enough, the company might well choose to mail out any that aren't obviously damaged and take the chance that the device will satisfy the customer. If it doesn't, they can always mail another.
Hiring a worker to mail things is a lot cheaper than hiring and training a worker to diagnose complex devices. It's also much slower, which means more labor costs. Even if they have to mail a device twice, it still comes out cheaper and faster than diagnosing every single return.

Random Black Screen Flashes

I have owned a Nexus 7 2nd gen for a couple months now and have just started to get random flashes of black (occurs for not even a quarter second) ...
I am wondering what causes this...
I have not damaged the Nexus in any way and bought it brand new..
I have only used CleanRom and PA ROM...
The functionality of the tablet remains great, but the flashes are very annoying ...I have tried clean installing multiple times but the flashes still happen...
Any feedback/solutions would be a big help...
Thanks

I had that happen soon enough for a return to be viable. Do some more Google searching and you'll find people who fixed this as a hardware issue. They had to open the back and fiddle a connection. Didn't sound to hard but I just went to best buy instead.

Just because you bought it off ebay doesn't mean it doesn't still carry the 1 year manufacturer warranty on the hardware. It would require you to send it in, but worth a shot.
Once you pop the back and start fiddling with hardware, you run the risk of doing enough damage where Asus will void the warranty. I think I would check with Asus first before resorting to hardware modifications.
