This isn't a 'which is better?' question, because they're two different sized tablets at different price points. I'm definitely considering getting a tablet soon, and I think it would have to be one of the two Nexus devices. But, which one should I get, is my question.
I used to have an OG Asus Transformer, and initially I used it frequently, but I ended up just going back to my desktop for general browsing etc. I think it might have been to do with the slightly outdated OS and specs, but also to do with the size.
I'm not sure if I want the very portable and rugged 7 inch screen, or the less portable and more cumbersome 10 inch screen.
Also, the price of a 32GB N7 is considerably cheaper than it's 32GB big brother, and I could also get mobile data if I wish.
I want to know if the smaller screen size and lower specs really make a difference on the experience.
Does anyone have both? And is the N7 big enough for watching Netflix, browsing the web etc. Cheers.
I didn't like web browsing on my Nexus 7, but enjoy it on my Nexus 10. Holding the device for games might of been slightly better on the Nexus 7 than Nexus 10 imo though, but the extra screen estate is nice on the Nexus 10.

I am quite a gamer, and I guess gaming on a Nexus 7 would be easier. How about portability, do you take your devices anywhere?

Yep, was walking around downtown a bit for about 2 hours with my N10 the other day; it's not too big of a problem as long as you have a bag of some sort I guess (I have a backpack and a laptop bag), but just carrying the N10 around with no case or anything probably isn't "too" ideal.
At the least, I think some sort of "book" cover with a grip might be nice for the N10 (which if I understand right, was planned to be available from Google, but was scrapped for redesign)

The Nexus 7 is perfect for carrying around, in the train/bus, on coffee breaks at the Autobahn , etc. The Nexus 10 is a little bit too big if you're walking or if it gets crowded on the bus/train, not that it is a bulky device but "on-the-go" the Nexus 7 wins in my opinion.
Gaming is good on both devices, it really depends on the game, for example "Asphalt 7: Heat", with the N7 the game is much easier to control, 'cause the N7 is smaller, on the N10 the display and graphics really rock with the game. It's hard to decide.

Just wanted to know one thing: the screen on the N7 is AMOLED, right? And the N10 has a LCD of some sort, right?
How good or bad are the blacks on the N10 screen compared to the AMOLED screen. I want to know because I own a Galaxy s2 and a Galaxy tab 7.7, which both have AMOLED tech, and I just love the colors and blacks I get on these screens. I am going to buy a N10 now, as soon as I see one, but I want to know about the "black" (how deep it is) first. Or could anyone please upload a picture with both N7 and N10 using a black background as wallpaper so I can get an idea?

The N7 does not have an AMOLED screen. It has an IPS screen. AMOLED is usually a technology used by Samsung on smartphones (keyword = usually).

Hmm, ok I was wrong about the Nexus 7 screen. Don't know why I thought it was AMOLED. Anyway how is the black on the Nexus 10? Say when you boot it upin a dark room, will you see the backlight in the corners and will it be grayish rather than pure black?

If you read around, people are talking about light bleed. It definitely hurts the level of black. The black isn't great and you'll definitely have some light bleed in the corners.
While the Nexus 10 is known for its high pixel density, it certainly doesn't have the best looking screen. That doesn't mean it's a trash screen though. It's pretty good even coming from a GNex whose screen I tweaked to fit my liking.

Yes I read about these corner bleeds on the forums, but I thought that might have been a first batch issue. I will buy a Nexus 10 as soon as I see one in the shops anyway, but it is just good to know what you will get before you buy anything

I got mine from the second batch and it still persists (not heavily though). To be honest, I didn't even know what light bleed was until I read around the Nexus 10 forums. Had to Google it to really know what it was about, and I decided to check up on all my LCD displays. All of them had it to a degree. I think people are making an exaggeratedly huge deal out of it. Don't bash me for that, because I'm sure there are people who either are very sensitive to this kind of thing or got a unit that was just completely unacceptable, but I really doubt that this many people can be possibly bothered by backlight bleeding which is prevalent in nearly all LCD displays. It just seems like something that got caught on and is spreading - "The Light Bleed Plague."
Anyway, if you're not in the dark a lot, you'll be okay.

Well, let's see. I don't have a Nexus 7, so you don't have to take my post into too much consideration, but I want you to spend money on what fits you.
The Nexus 7's specs are on the verge of being outdated. That means, give it about 6 months and a new low-cost tablet will come out. I'm guessing the Snapdragon S4 Pro will become the chip of future lower-end tablets and that thing is a beast even if it doesn't beat the Exynos 5250.
I'm sure the experience is fine as it is right now, but as apps start to make more use of the power, the Nexus 7 might start to be considered as "slow" in a few months. Unless you want to replace your tablet often, then I think this is quite problematic.
If you seriously want something portable, I would wait. Give it maybe 6 months and you can get something that'll last you 1.5 years. If you want something now, the N10 will get you far. The 5250 SOC is no joke even if its pushing a high resolution.
Again, I speak from just reading around and not from experience, so feel free to disagree or ignore this post.

How do you find out which batch your Nexus 10 is from?
I have both. Honestly fell in love with the form factor of the 7. Just perfect. If i need larger I use my computer. Seems like what you did even with the asus so I'd go with the 7 if i were you.

It's really a guess. I bought my directly after the first time it got sold out. But I believe there is also a naming scheme for the S/N and mine suggested it was the second (it had a B or 2 in there instead of an A or 1, I forgot which one it was though).
While I dont have the Nexus 7 or the Nexus 10 yet, I have used the Nexus 7 and own another 7 inch tablet and currently use an older 10.1 inch tegra 2 tablet. I would say this decision comes down purely to where and how you want to use it. If you plan on using it mostly at home or in the office then get the Nexus 10 hands down. I personally think the 7inch form factor is way too small and I feel like I am more using a large phone rather than a full tablet experience.
If you plan on using the tablet on the go, like bringing it to starbucks, traveling around with it, using it on the go, then get the 7 inch, its massively more portable.
In the end though, I just find 7 inch as far too small. I have big hands and its just not fun to use. Others mileage may vary.

Yeah I think it'll be more of a home usage thing There's those dock connectors on the bottom of the N10, will we be seeing any docks/keyboards soon?

The screen is just as good as any regular average computer monitor.
Transformer= cheap p.o.s. build quality & ****ty battery (tablet only, who really cares about it's performance as a netbook? if i wanted one i'd buy one)
Ipad2= nice, but like being on house arrest, or watching tv with everything over PG on parental lock. far too many limits.

Well the first thing i did when i set my Xoom up was turn off Auto Brightness as i do on all my devcies and turned brightness on full and found the screen on the Xoom to be bright and sharp. Then i strated reading all these posts about how poor the Xoom screen was and just couldn't understand it at all as my experiences are totally different. Only when i turned on the Auto brightness did i suddenly see what the compliants where about as it made the screen horrible. But really the fix is so simple just don't use Auto brightness and its all good IMHO.

Actually, if you read carefully through the test results, none of the displays did all that well. What really put the XOOM screen in last place was screen reflections and poor viewing angles, in most other critical tests, results were equal to or close to the competition.
If you put an anti-reflective screen protector on the XOOM, it compensates well for the XOOM's biggest shortcoming, screen reflections - (I use Boxwave Cleartouch Anti-Glare on the XOOM) the difference is pretty amazing and the screen looks quite good.
I am surprised that these professional reviewers made no mention of the two versions of the XOOM screen. So we don't even know which screen version they reviewed.

Yep, I've turned off auto-brighness and have an anti-glare, anti-fingerprint screen protector and I've never looked back. I have zero complaints about the screen now.
Who actually compares screens side by side? It's a bit like a ****-length contest. I'm happy with mine but I don't feel the need to wave it about next to others to impress....

+1. I completely agree. This whole thread seems like not much more than an exercise to justify someone's choice to sell the Xoom for another tablet.
I use A LOT of devices during my work day....and in terms of day to day use I have been very happy with the Xoom's screen.

I went to Bestbuy on Sat and looked at the SGT10.1 and iPad 2, played with both for a good few minutes, I'd say the iPad is at the top in terms of screen crispness and picture quality, iPad OS in general is very polished ... the SGT and Xoom imo is a close second, I have an anti glare protector on my Xoom so it does reduce the picture quality obviously. As said above set the brightness to 50-60% and you will see the Xoom screen pop.
All in all the Xoom will stay with me for two reasons ... SD card access (I have mine rooted so no crying about lack of SD access) and 2ndly it is so versatile having access to ROM's and Kernels, this kills my desire to ever want an iPad, I hate to be boxed in.
It's funny, the screen was one of the major reasons I returned my iPad2. I hated it because the resolution was too low, which made text look horrible.
The Xoom screen is brilliant as long as you take the brightness off auto.

That! Think that this was the first thing that I did on my Xoom.
I was using an ipad 2 the other day and yes the screen is far clearer but my xoom feels more like a mans toy rather then a childs toy.
dont mind having a worse screen when my battery lasts 4 days and i can do what i want with it and not controlled my apple.
also wouldnt get the transformer due to the speaker locations makes it to wide.
you get what you are happy with.
i love my xoom. i came from the viewsonic gtab so i naturally love the xoom screen compared to the gtab.

I think it's silly the "guru" of displays didn't review the GTab 10.1, since it's using a PLS screen which is Samsung's competitor to IPS.
Regarding the 'comparison' comments however: I was recently seated next to a woman on a flight from NYC and she had an iPad2. As I sat there and looked at a magazine on my xoom, I couldn't help but notice that her screen had outstanding viewing angles. When I put the xoom onto my lap and looked at it, the colors washed out and looked terrible. I ended up returning it and bought a GTab instead.
So - I think comparisons are valid, here. Especially in an environment where a direct comparison could be made. In my case it was on a plane, where I happen to be a lot.
The GTab's screen is fantastic. As good as the iPad2. The build quality on my unit is fine, but there are a lot of complaints about dust under the screen, and so on. I would gladly go back to the 'thicker' xoom if they came out with a higher quality screen. The xoom felt great. But in the end, the screen sucked (I had the Sharp with bad light leakage) and that was, in a word, unacceptable - no matter how many people trumpet out that screen bleeding on tablets is normal. It's not.
So I went to bestbuy today to officially make a decision on a tablet. I was seriously considering the Flyer, 10.1, Touchpad, Xoom (especially with the price drop), and and the iPad 2.
Long story short, after playing with everything for like an hour, I walked out with a xoom. I had almost written it off because of everything I had read about the screen. With all the terrible things being said about it I was almost expecting a dim misery of an LCD ala the Velocity Cruz.
But I must say after using it at bestbuy I was really surprised. The screen is very clear, more than bright enough, even at bestbuy, and the colors are fine. I then spent some time with the 10.1, and had my eyes blown out. The colors where WAY over-saturated and blown out. I can see why people like it, but the colors aren't accurate. I think this is same syndrome people have when the see super amoled screens, and why they leave their tv's on "dynamic" Just because the colors are more saturated doesn't mean they're better. The xoom looked much more natural to me with its warmer display and more muted colors.
And now that I have it home, im very happy with my choice. It feels so well built. I didn't need the thinness and lightness of the 10.1, I like having the build quality. The screen has ZERO backlight bleed (take that apple!), and I can't find any dead pixels, dust, or anything like that. Im not trying to "justify" my purchase here, like im sure some will say. I could have easily bought a 10.1 or an iPad 2 if I wanted. But I just liked the xoom the best, screen and all.
So does anyone else actually like this screen, or is it just me?

I am happy with my Xoom's display as well. I often watch HD movies on it, and it looks great. It doesn't seem to "pop" like some samsung screens, or some amoled screens I've seen on a few htc devices, but it is by no means faulty. I personally love the vivid popping colors on the previously mentioned devices, but, again, I am happy with my Xoom as well.
Also, I find a lot of people complain about things such as this out of jealousy(they are mad because they don't have said device, so make up excuses to justify it) or fanboyism(Htc is the best ever. Moto screens suck!!), or some other various reason that holds no merit.
Lastly, the people who are satisfied generally aren't as vocal, so you don't see as many threads started by them. However, when someone finds the smallest problem such as one miniscule dust particle, viewed only by microscope, under the glass of their device, the obvious step is to all caps rage on the forums, demand justice, expect a free replacement of a far superior device, etc.

I love my Xoom screen too. Especially at sixty percent to full brightness, the Xoom screen is plenty saturated and true. I'm a painter, and I use my Xoom as my portfolio, so it has to be good.
I also am very satisfied with the screen quality and its warm colors. The brightness isn't as high as some other tablets but its enough to satisfy my needs. I usually have it set to auto brightness anyways, save for when watching shows or movies. As mentioned, I too really appreciate the build quality of the xoom and the weight did not bother me at all. Although now that I have an otterbox defender on it, the weight pretty much doubled and not to mention how beastly thick it is with it on.

Humans are more fond towards colors that pop and are bright even if they aren't accurate.
The xoom screen is fine and well worth the price at the new price point @ $500.

There are a lot of topics here about the two different screens, search. You can find out what screen you have by typing "dmesg" in terminal and look for line that contains lcd. I have a Sharp screen. A Xoom that i returned because of toutch screen problems had a AUO screen.

I believe terminal here means either command prompt from your pc while connected to your Xoom in debug mode or using the Terminal emulator app.
I suppose to test it, just download Terminal Emulator from the market and run it. Then type dmesg on the dos-like blue screen that appears. A whole bunch of text will appear and you just look for a line that describes lcd.
This should be familiar to you if you know how to use DT a2sd.

Yes, use Terminal emulator from Market.
It's a good idea to restart your Xoom before you type dmesg (you will get a lot of text if you don't restart and it's possible you will not find the line you are looking for).

I'm currently playing with Thrive, xoom, and tab 10.1. Im comparing the display side by side and tab 10.1 looks better and sharper, no matter what you say. The speaker quality on tab 10.1 blows away both of them. Other than those extra connector found on xoom and more on thrive, tab 10.1 win hands down in rest of the other departments. Also, the display of Toshiba thrive is better than xoom and speakers sound decent to. Its not about jealousy. If you try them side by side then you better understand what's beat for you. I know its not possible all the time but at least sometimes when there are $500 - $600 involved and return policy without restocking fee is available, go for it and take your decision based on that.

Hmmm. Well it seems I have the AUO screen as well. What kind of problems are they having? Mine looks pretty good, like I sad no light bleed or anything. The only thing I can see is a slight scanline affect that you can sometimes see on cheaper lcd's, i'v seen it on cheap laptops before.
Not sure that justifies a return but has anyone else noticed it?

Did some searching. Looks like the sharp screen had better color and contrast but also has a massive amount of backlight bleed, where as the AUO has worse contrast and color but has zero backlight bleed. I have a feeling the one on display at bestbuy was a sharp, but the bleed was invisible due to the overhead lights.
I use mine in the dark allot so I cant stand bleed, I have no interest in trying to get a sharp screen. It looks like AUO also makes screens for cheap laptops, witch would explain why I can see the scanlines you see on cheap laptops lol. I have 14 days to see if ill be satisfied the AUO screen. If not I guess I can always trade for the oversaturated Samsung

Oh and to really make your life easier, type "dmesg | grep lcd".
This will extract text that contain "lcd" and you don't have to scroll through all the text to look for it.
And seems like I got the AUO screen.. well I'm fairly satisfied with it but seeing that I'm not american and I imported my Xoom, I'll have to live with it no matter what.
As an avid reader, I don't like the new ipad's weight and bulk, but I quite like its screen, specifically its pixel density that makes the letters look very beautiful. The new ipad's display is perceptively worse than that of my iphone 4, now Nexus 7's display looks one step worse further on paper. How is it in reality? How clear is 1280x800?
Avid reader here as well, already read about 200+ pages on the N7 in the past 24 hours and i can say that the screen's PPI is awesome for reading but i couldn't tell you how it compares to the iPad 3

Its weight and everything sound so so so much better for reading than ipad 3! Can you make the screen dim enough to read in the dark?

Even with rootdim and night mode in the kindle app, it is a little bright but doable. I have light sensitive eyes though.

The clarity is great for reading, i have considered selling my Nook e-reader due to it but my eyes get strained reading off LCD screens.
If you are in the US and have a Gamestop nearby, try calling them as they might have a demo unit, the one near me did. That way you can check it out.
Thanks guys for the info. I've already gotten rid of my Kindle Touch because I couldn't stand the sloooooowwwwwwness. Couldn't see a demo unit in Germany though and I'm headed to Asia where Nexus won't be arriving in waves either.
Compared to the iPad 3, it's not quite as sharp and the colours not as good but tbh it's not that far off in reality due to a smaller screen.
The average person would find it difficult and not really care as the Nexus is lighter, and a better shape and size for reading. Also the back cover feels great to hold.

You're right, 7 inch is great for reading. I owned a kindle touch which is almost the same dimension only 2cm shorter, it was much better to hold in my hands and carry around in my purse than my ipads. Only the Kindle was slow and pretty much useless in doing anything else and I'm not always in the mood for books. Nexus 7 is perfect in that regard, everything rolled into one.
The two are not exactly comparable. The text on the 3rd gen iPad is the most crisp, clear, and punchy you'll get from any device today; including desktop and mobile. The Nexus 7 is significantly more washed out with visible pixels at the edges of text. When it comes to display technology, the Nexus 7 and the iPad are not in the same category. If you think the iPhone 4 is worse in terms of clarity (not saturation and contrast) then the Nexus 7 probably isn't for you.
When it comes to form factor however, if you prefer reading from paperback novels, the Nexus 7 will be much more enjoyable. If you prefer textbook, magazine, and newspaper reading formats then the iPad will likely be a better tablet for you.
There's a large price gap between the two that should also be considered.

iPhone 4 and 4s have very crispy screens with 329.65 PPI, The New iPad's screen has 263.92 PPI. I can occasionally tell that it's not as crispy as my iphone but it doesn't really register. At 215.63 PPI, I'm hoping Nexus can fool my eyes, too. At least for a year, until the next gen devices with better display roll out. :fingers-crossed:
So, i'm in the market for a larger tablet. Love my Nexus 7, but my girlfriend wants it, and I was thinking of upgrading anyway.The most important thing, aside from Jelly Bean, is the display. Both the Infinity and 10 have high resolution, but screen uniformity is a huge pet peeve of mine. Light bleed, leakage, will drive me crazy. I was pretty much set on the NExus 10, but engadget said that both of their review models had leakage in the corners. Then I started looking at the infinity, only to find several forums on XDA talking about bad light bleeding there too.
1. No one here has a 10 yet to ask directly, but are there any retail outlets that will sell the N10? Much easier to swap if I get a unit with light bleed that way.
2. Is light bleed as common on the Infinity as it seems to be? I know the internet, particularly forums, tends to blow up negative issues, so i'm trying to get a better feel for the actual, average build quality of an Infinity display.
3. My nexus 7 is perfectly uniform, also made by asus, also IPS. So is it safe to say that it is possible to get a perfectly uniform Infinity?

The N10 It's only being sold on the Play Store at the moment. Engadget aren't exactly the most unbiased website out there, loads of other websites have written reviews with no mention of light bleed. Plus the N10's they've been given aren't final models, so there could be minor changes made before retail models are out.
yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking; no one else mentioned light bleed. Not saying Engadget's didn't have it, but that doesn't necessarily suggest an issue for the tablet in general. Just got back from Best Buy; wasn't as thrilled with the Infinity as I thought I would be. The screen kind of flexes against the chassis when I put a bit of pressure on it, and it wasn't nearly as zippy as my nexus 7. Running ICS of course, but still. Might just have to take a leap of faith and order the Nexus 10 from the play store, hopefully google will help sort out any issues I might have with screen uniformity.

I have a Nexus S right now that is rooted and am hoping to get some insite on how people are liking their N4's coming from the Nexus S. I know the N4 has almost 4 times the RAM as the Nexus S and much more CPU and GPU power, but Nexus S is running pretty well. I just want to know what are people's experiences! Can't wait to get my own N4!

I had the Nexus S a while ago but there's really no comparison between the two. I loved all the Nexus devices, but this one is just simply amazing. From the hardware design to the software it's a pleasing and flawless experience. You won't be disappointed

You will love it! I have the nexus s for my work phone and then the N4 as my personal phone. If you like the Nexus S then i can assume you like stock android and thus the N4 is like stock android but on steriods because of how much faster and smoother it is. There will be some differences though, the N4 has the LCD screen while the Nexus had the Amoled (thinking about that i think they did do a LCD screen of the nexus but mine is Amoled anyway) so colours will look different, however you will love how sharp the screen is since its a huge bump in resolution.
The camera is a million times better than the S
On screen buttons you should be ok with, some people dont like them because it takes up screen real estate, however since you're coming from the S that screen is only 4inch so the bump to 4.4inch of userable screen should still be good. (also as a side point i came from the GS3, people who moan about they should put buttons on the bezel are idiots who know nothing, i cant tell you how many times you accidently hit buttons when holding the phone in landscape because they have no bezel on the bottom of the phone as its took up by buttons)
The only thing which is neither good or bad, its just different, will be the construction, the N4 is far far superior in construction quality, so you will either love it for that as it feels fantastic in the hand....... or you will hate it because its made out of glass and thus is prone to cracks if you drop it, where as the nexus S is more durable.
My general opinion is that that should be obvious, its glass.... it will break, if your one of these people who are super careful you will be fine, if you generally drop your phone often, get a case/bumper
bar that you should love it, since you didnt have LTE in the first place or removal storage, these are things you havent lost.
The last thing i will say is since you've come from a stock google device, it should be super super easy restroing all your items when you load into your account on your new phone
I have an SGS1 with custom ROMs, which is almost identical hardware. The difference between the two is really immense. A bigger, nicer screen with zero stutter or lag when doing almost anything. Apps are quick, everything is snappy.
Now when I look back at my Nexus S (though I came to N4 via Galaxy Nexus after the "S"), it is hard to even compare the two. I'd say you will be for a better experience pretty much on every single front. Except for size maybe - you'd definitely need some time to get used to the much wider phone. Especially if you plan on using case/bumper.

I have the Nexus 7 right now and I love it! The lack of LTE doesn't really bother me because I know T-mobile HSPA+ is more then enough. The glass design makes me really happy because I feel like its the first android phone worth showing off to people! I'm just so used to the speed on my Nexus S that when I turn on the Nexus 4 I'm expecting a world's of difference. I can't wait!

It really is everything! Its like comparing an old analog TV to the new sleek and HDTVs. The nexus 4 has a beautiful design, quadruple the ram, excellent cpu and GPU hardware, and a gorgeous HD LCD display. It really is better in every aspect in my opinion
