Switching from T-Mobile MyTouch 4G - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Once I get my Nexus 4, is there anything I have to do to switch from a MyTouch 4G aside from cutting the SIM down to size?
Do I have to call T-Mobile or anything?
I'm on a FlexPay no-contract plan.
Thanks

Just cut the SIM down to size and you should be good.

That should do it, you shouldn't have to call tmobile. I'm on a post paid no-contract plan with tmobile and I had to get a new sim card because the one I had was non-4G and unable to be cut down (the gold contacts on the card were bigger than an entire micro-sim). The sim new card was associated with my phone number only, not the IMEI or anything like that.

I would make sure you have the phone backed up to Google servers. I think you the MT4G allowed you to store contacts to sim card or google...you'll want to make sure that is all on google. Save you a headache later when you can't stick the cut down sim into the mt4g anymore to get info off of it.

How do you know if your SIM is non-4G? Is there a technical term for it so I can google an image to see which type I have?

Worthless predictions

I know we're all in that 7-day window with G1 data and all. And I know that what t-mobile *does* is usually far less strict than what they *say* when it comes to requirements for plans and such.
I'd like to know how T-Mobile plan to handle no-contract purchases of the G1 when it comes to data plans.
But I predict within the next week or two, that T-Mobile will switch all G1 account holders to the G1 data plan (if they haven't already) and wipe out all the other data and text plans for the line. With such a huge subsidy involved, they'd be stark-raving mad not to.
And I also predict a flurry of *****-posts like:
They changed my plan without telling me. This is BS man!

And all I have to say (in advance) is: YOU WERE WARNED...and if you re-upped a contract, you AGREED to it.
well when you buy the phone it tates that your plan will be switched to a G1 plan, so whoever is crying, stop it, cause i was told and if i remember correctly it stated that the plan would be changed to a g1 plan on the preorder screens with info and stuff
Need to sticky this or something like it.
you can use your phone with older simcard (not 3g) and can use 5.99 plan in this phone, the only problem is that where you take the phone, if take with tmobil , have to pay 25 $ more for data plan and 3g but if you take that in ebay or other place , dont have to pay nothing extra.

LOL.
T-Mobile DOES NOT have seperate sim cards that support 3g and some that don't.
Well I could be wrong, but you'd have to have a very very very very very very old sim card.
I'm using a 4-5 year old simcard and 3g works just fine with it.
I was kinda mad to learn that they wiped all my services... I understand the texting and data... but they took off my mobile to mobile and I can't add it back online... for now I am not going to worry but will bring it up if I notice an issue on the bill.
tmobile has plans to offer free mobile to mobile and some other services http://forums.tmonews.com/index.php?topic=4044.0

I didn't get a new sim card, either.
The only time I've gotten a new sim card was when I moved from Michigan to Illinois and wanted an Illinois phone number. Apparently (or at least at the time) an Illinois number needed an Illinois SIM, and I had to go to a store to pick it up, because T-Mo said they don't have extra SIMs lying around to ship out.

Only new customers will get a SIM, there is no need for existing customers to receive a new SIM card. T-Mobile made changes on the back end to allow for existing SIMs to connect on 3g.
I received a sim in both G1 packages... the one to my house and the one at the store.

AT&T and SGS

Is the non-American SGS recognized by AT&T's network as a smartphone?
I ask because some people have successfully tricked AT&T's network in allowing them to use the $15 unlimited data plan for non-smartphones (of course most are caught and forced to upgrade their plan, like with the nexus one).
I've had the SIM for my iPhone 3G in my Singapore version of the Galaxy S for over 48 hours now and the website at wireless.att.com for my account still shows the SIM as being inside the iPhone. When I put the SIM inside my Razr, it usually switches on the website within a few minutes.
That's a good sign, in my opinion, but I wouldn't bank on it.

So right now im using it with the $15 dollar media net plan with unlimited data
I plan on buying a brand new sim from AT&T, is that okay? Or should I just buy a used sim card from one of those non-smartphones?
Thanks for your replies.

Honestly i dont think it would be a problem. Just buy a cheap phone or even get a free one with a simcard in it. Because if they ask you for the imei and the device you are using, you would have your crappy free phone to give the info.
When that is done just pop in the simcard into the galaxy s

No VZW data plan, got 4G SIM w/ 4G upgrade.

I bought my VZW Xoom day one without a data plan, and never got one, so I was expecting not to get a 4G SIM card when I got the 4G radio upgrade.
Am I just lucky or did everyone without a data plan get a 4G SIM with the 4G radio upgrade?

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if VZW had MOTO put the SIM card in as a temptation.
My tbolt 4G SIM worked fine in my Xoom, so at least I know the new radio works.
Some people with Xoom data plans had a harder time getting their new SIM card to work, than I did using my tbolt SIM.

I seriously have to pose this question... So your TBOLT SIM card works in your 4G XOOM, correct?
So does that mean, that there may be a possible loop-hole around these lame XOOM data caps?
I don't own a 4G phone, but say someone happened to add a line to their plan with a extra TBOLT 4G (before the new limited data plans), then technically you could experience "unlimited" 4G data on your Motorola XOOM just by switching the SIM?
Someone is bound to catch onto this eventually... and then so will Verizon... but if it works now, then why not?
EDIT: Lmao, someone beat me to it (this was the first thread I read), then I saw this thread after my post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288922
My bad.
All Xooms getting the 4G upgrade without the data plan will get a sim card so if you decide (wink wink, at least according to motorola and version) get the data they just need your SIM# do the activation.
My roommate's xoom doesn't have the data plan and he plans on using the wifi only for now so he didn't care about the radio breaking and wanted everything back how it was so there he goes for that.
Now, as for people having an hard time getting there sim card to work (those with data plans already), I didn't had any problems, I booted it up, after about 5 minutes of poking around and about to go into the bootloader to unlock it I get a message saying there's a sim card in there and asked if I wanted to activate it, and when I did I got my 4g data working with no problem.
Also, I don't see why you can't use your 4G phone's sim card in the xoom, they all act the same way in terms of activation and use. The whole point of the sim card is for you to easily change your phones without having to really go through yet another activation process and what not.

You wouldn't be able to add a new line with a tbolt and have unlimited data because a new line would be subject to the tiered data. If you were to upgrade to a 4g phone on a line that had unlimited data already this works.
I have a tbolt on an unlimited plan and am using my sim in my xoom to stream netflix as I speak.
Gueeze, does Verizon even have a development team at all, or are they so cheap that they just let their consumers find all the exploits for them?
Maybe they laid them all off.
At any rate, once they are wise to this particular type of bandwidth "theft", is it a simple fix on their end, or do they have to further tighten policy, making their data plans even less attractive than they are now?

Actually according to Verizon this is acceptable use of our 4g sim cards.
http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/faqs/VZAccess/4g_sim_card.html?grp=1&faq=8
" Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM in more than one device?
Yes; the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card contains all of your subscriber information, so the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card."
Great find.

Nexus 4 and Straight Talk

I am planning on Straight Talk $45 unlimited 1mo plan.
https://www.straighttalk.com/secure/ServicePlans
From some internet research it looks like the best bet is to get the t-mobile compatible sim (since service prbs are with at&t compatible sim).
The problem is, t-mobile compatible sim is only full-sized - not for nexus 4 micro sim. Contracted their customer service, they confirmed no t-mobile compatible microsim.
Now I have two options:
1. get the at&t compatible microsim
2. get t-mobile full sized sim and then use sim cutter.
Which way to go?

I am not going to stay with t-mobile, I am talking about straighttalk t-mobile compatible sim.
http://www.straighttalk.com/ShopSims
Depends
It all depends on what you rather have. I personally will be going to Straight Talk too, but with the ATT sim.
ATT will offer better coverage (Also better wall penetration) in most parts of the USA, while T-mobile lacks in the coverage department they have great speeds in areas where they provide HSPA+. But as soon as you leave those areas if you travel a lot then you will be on EDGE a lot more.
I have seen people on the ATT Straight Talk getting 3mbs/1mbs to 7mbs/3mbs and those on T-mobile getting 7mbs/3mbs to above 10mbs/4mbs.
But like I said it really depends on what you want, I am leaving sprint so regardless of who I chose it would be a lot better.
If you go with T-mobile just cut the SIM.
I have straight talk and had tmobile b4. Where i live they both have strong signal get bout same speeds. I think tmobile will only help in bigger markets where they have the 42mbps towers not everywhere i tried to check the coverage where the 42 spots our cant really figure it out i live in a medium size market i dont get the 42 speeds here anyway so just something to think about.

You basically spelled it out right there. Which network do you want to use ATT or TMo. If ATT, pick option 1. If TMo, pick 2.
ATT has wider coverage, so you can go to rural areas and still get decent signal. TMo usually craps out when you leave the city.
TMo has better speeds in the city, since most cities' ATT networks are congested compared to TMo (more users). Add to that, since Straight Talk is an MVNO, it gets lower priority at cell towers compared to ATT postpaid and ATT prepaid customers. So you can stand beside someone with an ATT SIM and he has a signal, while your ST SIM gets nothing.
If you have the money to spare to buy 2 SIMs, try the ATT microSIMs first. If you're not satisfied, then get the TMo SI and cut it down. If you have the extra $60 to spare, get them both at the same time, buy a month's service for both, and so a side-by-side comparison.

also, do you use google voice for voicemail? I believe T-Mobile MVNO's don't allow call forwarding (which is what Google Voice does for voicemail). I could be wrong though, so make sure you do your search on that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890301
As soon as my contract (and my wife's) is up on AT&T in March, we are going to get the Straight Talk sim for AT&T...mainly because of the reasons other people have mentioned in this thread... plus, when I had the G Nexus, I got a T-Mobile prepaid sim to test it out and T-Mobile HSPA+ was slower here than AT&T.... but go with the coverage that works for you.
For some reason, I'm experiencing very slow data speeds with straight talk ( att Sim) with my nexus 4. Called them to reset my data settings but still no good.
I cut my straight talk/tmobile sim to work in my nexus 4. i refused to use att side of straight talk. so far everything is good no complaints :good:

What are your APN settings? Delete the first proxy, test again. I had a to reset data, then set the phone in airplane mode and back and retested.
I have T-Mobile, have always loved it. The reception in my office had always been on the line, but most of the time, with all my other phones, I've been able to get 3/4g most of the time.
With the n4, I NEVER get 3/4g in my office. Quite frustrating. Thinking about getting st att based on most replies here. Sucks I need to change based on the phone

Switched to a TMobile SIM, now reading "No Sim Card"

Hey guys,
I am in a rural area, and had been getting 'meh' service with the ST AT&T SIM card. I decided to try the ST T-Mobile one, so I ordered it, received it, and just activated it 45/month. I cut it down using a template, and inserted it into the N4, but it's reading "No Sim Card" after about 15 minutes..
Is it possible that I just did a ****ty job cutting it, should have invested in a microsim cutter, and the phone isn't detecting it? I'll try to attach a picture .. If this is the case... can I switch back to the ST AT&T sim/get a refund for the 45/airtime I just added to a new defunct sim? any similar experiences?

No to both of you.
I must clarify that you can use Straight Talk SIMs with any unlocked phone, yes, if that was what you're asking.
I HIGHLY doubt Straight Talk will transfer funds to T-Mobile. It's more, but still not very, likely that Straight Talk will give a refund directly to you.

No it won't work with StraightTalk, two totally different services, StraighTalk is just using TMo and AT&T towers not their services. I'm currently on TMo's Monthly 4g but get no service in my area so I'm switching to StraightTalk AT&T and ordered the micro sim card on Walmarts website, its not free its $14.95. And I didn't see a micro sim card for StraightTalk T-Mobile, only a standard sim card on teh website so they might not have one for T-Mobile.
I would imagine you don't have the APN's set correctly on your phone. Make sure they are set right first.

Also check your phone setting to see if T-Mobile shows up and then register with the network.

It will do a search and if it's see T-Mobile it will show up and just select it and it should say Registered on Network. If it doesn't show it then something is wrong with the sim I would say.
edit: not sure it will say T-Mobile or not as I don't have SttaightTalk yet but worth a try.

If your going with TMobile I wouldn't waste my time using the StraightTalk version as the $30 Monthly 4G plan direct from T-Mobile is a lot cheaper and a better value. Only reason I'm switching is I get absolutely no service in my area from TMo.
From the picture it looks like a good cut to me. From what I understand as long as you stay away from the metal you're good to go.
