Which Simcard should I pick for straight talk with use on Nexus S?

I've been on Metro PCS for almost three years, but I couldn't stand them to be honest. I only stayed with them for their international calling plan (so my father could speak to our relatives). Now that Straight Talk is offering the same exact plan I pay $60 for except with better coverage, working sms, reliable texting, and real mobile broadband, I'm excited. I've already decided on getting a Nexus S, but I'm curious as to which Simcard I should get so I can get HSPA+ data service.
Any ideas?

Your SIM just tells the phone what its number is and what network it should connect to. It's the phone itself, specifically the frequency bands it supports, you need to pay attention to.

Seriously, this is a non answer to the question from the O.P, almost a waste of typing. Wow.
O.P, you'll need to get the T-mobile sim from straight-talk as the Nexus S I assume you'll be getting will be the Tmobile compatible version.
If you're getting an AT&T Nexus S then obviously choose the AT&T straight-talk sim.

Can I use an ATT phone on net10

Never heard of Net10 til today. It's new in my area. Can I use an att Lumia 900 on it unlocked? It'd be a savior on the bill. What are your thoughts on net10 service?

From what I understand, Net10 phones only work with a sim card specific to that device. Swapping the sim cards wouldn't work. Straight talk is always an option since it uses GSM. It runs on t-mobiles network.

Isn't it the phone that's locked? Meaning bringing in an att sim would work?

ST uses either AT&T or T-mobiles network i think it depends which you choose to use

I don't think so. From what I was reading, unlocking it wouldn't matter. The sim card and the phone it was with other work together. You can't use an AT&T sim card in an Net10 phone or a Net10 sim card in an AT&T phone
That was what I got from a little researching. I could be wrong.
And ST is always an option as well. They have good plans and use GSM so swapping sim cards wouldn't be an issue.

I'm using the Galaxy Note with a NET10 sim.
Things you should be aware of:
1. Web access doesnt work if you are roaming
2. YOu can use a AT&T locked phone (as mine is locked)
Unlimited plan is really limited to your area code. ONce you cross the line you don't get to use data.
So you will be screw on your travels or work outside your area.
I just signed up. But wish I hadn't.

So the NET10 rep couldn't solve my web access problem on the Note BUT I've it working w/O their help.
IT works outside my area code and I get average 3G speed.
So you AT&T android phone doesn't have to be unlocked to be able to use NET10.

will you please tell us just how you managed to do this??
please post your settings....even your new APN settings if you had to make new..

NET10 had just came up with there unlimited plan of $50 (talk,text and date (3G)) or $65 with all that + international calling to almost 50 countries, and they are saying on the SIM card kit, to bring your GSM unlocked or compatible phone , Iphone, Android, Smart phone.
and it should work, pop the sim in and follow the instructions.
I'm actually thinking seriously to switch to them after buying a AT&T HTC Vivid, thinking i'll be able to use with t-mobile 4G, to find the LTE Curse is on my Vivid.
i talked to a dealer of NET10 and he told me the NET10 uses both networks, and you are guaranteed to get 3G speed on any phone capable of having 3G speed.

So what happened???? I'm really considering switching to Net10 over At&t. It would save me about $30 a month, and give all my phone lines unlimited data not just mine.

I am using my NET10 micro-sim card (for AT&T) as part of their Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) sim card package in my new AT&T-branded Sony Xperia Ion (LT28at) that has been unlocked to carrier. I'm in a small area in western South Dakota that has AT&T coverage, and I am getting 4g speeds on the cellular service from my home. The reception is great, and you do get edge (2g) and 3g data while traveling outside your area, just not the highest speeds. I travel to Seattle frequently for business and can verify this. With prepaid monthly it is about $47.50 (with taxes) per month. HUGELY worth it after being 'chained' to Verizon for years and years!

im on a s4 non prepaid at&t phone using net 10 on the at&t network. no problems and i live in wautoma wisc.

After waiting for over 30 minutes on phone with Straight Talk, the representative told me they don't have micro-sim for T-mobile in my area. Solavei doesn't support Nexus 4 yet. There is no end to carrier woes. I was thinking of getting T-Mobile connection as a lot of people are reporting higher speeds on T-mobile. Any of you in the same problem.

If you want Straight Talk T-Mobile, you'll need to get a regular SIM, cut it to Micro-SIM size, and hope it works. Or, perhaps try T-Mobile prepaid. You c an get $30/month unlimited text/data with 100 minutes of talk if you activate online.
There aren't really many carriers issues, I think, just certain choices and the occasional AT&T issue with data speeds/plans/getting them to work properly due to the way they do things.

I don't think I want to get into trouble of cutting sim cards. I might just get Solavei using Samsung S3 sim card which is a micro card and hope it works.

There is no trouble for cutting sim cards. And why don't you try AT&T on straight talk?

I might. I wanted to give T-Mobile a try. I have been reading that T-Mobile runs 42Mbps and ATT runs 21Mbps.
I have ordered Solavei using S3 IMEI. Hope it works.

If you have decent T-Mo coverage in your area, I'd recommend trying it. I fell into the AT&T "You don't have an AT&T aprroved 4G device and therefore we can't give you a 4G plan" hole and no amount of explanation with 2 different CSRs resolved it. I could have given them an IMEI from one of the phones in their store, but decided that I'm trying too hard to get them to keep my money. I already had a T-Mo account (wanted to try out both for a few days before deciding). The port happened in 4 hours on a Saturday morning. I'm happy with my coverage and speeds so far.

Solavei doesn't yet support Nexus 4 but I used Samsung S3's IMEI to get a micro Sim. Hope it works.
Also I am porting my number to Google voice so I will be able to give both att and t- moo try without any hassle.

[Q] Straight Talk vs TracFone

I plan on switching from AT&T to Straight Talk. Right now, AT&T provides good reception here. TracFones have terrible reception here. Will Straight Talk also have bad reception here?

Straight Talk uses AT&T towers so you'll get whatever signal AT&T does (well 1/2 of them do - the other half uses TMobile so make sure to choose when signing up).
Oddly enough, Tracfone does use AT&T as well and is also part of the same company as Straight Talk, all owned by Carlos Slim - Richest man in the world, so even Tracfone should get the same signal as Straight talk. The good thing is that there is no contract so you can try out ALL of them and see what works best for you.
(actually more like 1/3 since they use Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile depending on your plan - so you might be comparing Tracfone on T-Mobile to a normal AT&T phone).

The other thing is TracFones are low quality devices and poor reception could have a lot to do with that. The settings in your APN (which are different between the two) will not affect signal strength but will affect data speed. You should get as strong a signal as anyone else on ATT. Data speed may be lower because of the N4 and 4g.

The Straight Talk site is leaving me with some questions. I want to transfer my AT&T number. Once I get the phone, I'm sure I need to go to Activate/Reactivate-Transfer Number. The next screen requires that I give them the Phone IMEI and some other info. Will I get the option to select AT&T towers on a later screen?

Tracfone has cdma and gsm (att/tmo) services, so 3 things could be going on.
1) Tracfone is cdma so straight talk ATT is fine in your area.
2) Tracfone is tmo gsm so straight talk ATT is fine in your area.
3) Tracfone is att gsm so straight talk may not work for you and the reason att gets a solid signal is because it's roaming.

If you are activating from the site then it probably checks your IMEI to see what phone it is then puts you on the correct track. By choosing SIM Plan you choose CDMA, 850Mhz (AT&T) or TMobile which then gives you the right SIM (or none).
If you use a nexus 4 i hear they don't know that IMEI so you'll just have to find that one they suggest or call them or whatever.

I just got off the phone with TracFone/Straight Talk (after a 45 min wait) and they verified the 2 TracFones here are using AT&T's network. I hope the problem with the TracFone signals here are the cheap phones and the Nexus 4 will prove to be better. I don't think I am roaming with my phone. I don't have the Nexus 4 yet. I am using the Nokia N85. I don't see a roaming icon on it although I am not sure it even has one. I can't order the SIM now because the N85 takes a standard SIM and I beleive the Nexus 4 takes a micro SIM. If I order the Straght Talk SIM and transfer my number to it, I don't think I can put it in the N85 to use while I wait for the Nexus 4 to return to stock.

The N85 has a spring loaded slot? In any case, the MicroSIMs come in a SIM card cut out which includes a MINISIM which you then break the MicroSIM out of. To use it on a normal phone you just slide it back into the MiniSIM cutout (adapter) and then slide it into your N85. Once the N4 comes you can then take out it's adapter and slide just the MicroSIM into the Nexus 4.

Yeah I have no idea how to check for roaming on an n85, I wish you luck though although in my experience cheap dumb phones have gotten better reception that my smartphones

I was just going to ask this question next. Perhaps ST doesn't do the cut-out/adaptor with their SIMs. Darn. It would have been nice to get started and compare it vs AT&T on the N85. The N85 does have a spring-loaded slot. Here is an excellent article about SIM adaptors and possible damage from using them.

As I thought, the ST AT&T sim doesn't give me strong signal strength on the Nexus 4 like the genuine AT&T sim does on the Nokia N85. I do not know how to check the actual db on the Nokia so I can't get the actual numbers. I suspect AT&T assigns the lowest priority to third parties leasing their lines...or someting to that effect. I can get stronger signal by selecting 2G speed only on the Nexus 4 but it sucks to have to do that.

I don't believe that for a second. signal bars between different phones are not standardized at all.

I would like to find out the actual signal in db on the N85. Then I have actual number to compare. I do know that my first call yesterday with ST dropped within a minute. I don't have that issue with the genuine AT&T service phone.

Review: VZW Note 4 on Straight Talk

Please forgive me if my post is hard to understand, as I am on strong meds for my epilepsy.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am an avid supporter of Straight Talk, as I find it has the best overall bang for my buck at $45 a month. Now that ST is offering Verizon sim cards to be used on their network (unlimited talk, text, 3GB data, throttled after 3GB,) I have decided to jump onto their towers. Coming from a Oneplus One with an AT&T sim, needless to say, I was very used to flashing nightly CM builds. The OPO is a good phone, another bang for my buck purchase, but in my rural area Verizon seems to just have better service. I picked up a new in box VZW Note 4 from Swappa for $565 tax free, and have some impressions I'd like to share.
The service:
The service is superior on Verizon. At the VA hospital, at home, and at the mall, I get seamless simultaneous data and voice service. With the OPO on ATT, this was not the case. On the OPO, I would be stuck without the ability to load a web page in many areas, even though the phone stated that it had a 4g LTE connection. I have not run into this issue on the VZW note 4. Neither ATT nor Verizon offers roaming on straight talk, but the VZW towers are so extensive, that I have yet to run into an issue. On ATT, I was unable to get service in some of the more rural areas of my state (nevada.)
The hardware:
The hardware is far superior on the Note 4 than the OPO. It sports a higher res screen, IR blaster, Wacom stylus, and all the fun features that make a note 4 what it is.
The price:
The OPO had a much better price point, but I was satisfied with the increase in services for the note 4 that I got for $200 more than what the OPO costs.
The software:
The note 4 is capable of software that has good practical use, such as a universal remote and drawing software. The OPO is not capable of such things as the hardware does not support it, however, it does have root, and CM, so all the Titanium Backup and Wifi tethering you can handle (as long as you have good service.) The VZW Note 4 is capable of wifi tethering through PDA Net, which luckily I still had a key for from when I had PDA net on my T-Mobile G1 back in the day, but it is obnoxious and makes me utilize a lockscreen pin number which serves as an inhibitor of my device since I like to casually pick it up and turn it on.
The bloatware:
Oneplus One has no bloatware, and even if it did, you could remove it with Titanium Backup. VZW Note 4 has much bloatware, and a lot of it is incompatible with straight talk. Things that will not work on Straight Talk include Caller Name ID, My Verizon Mobile, stock wifi tethering, and visual voicemail. As most of these are premium services, I don't have a use for them and hide them from my menu. VZ Navigator does work on Straight talk, and I find it a very useful GPS software.
Overall, I am satisfied with the Note 4 on Verizon. I will not revert to the OPO and/or ATT ST, and I will not move to Verizon Wireless for prepaid service as it offers less data, and I will not pay for a post-paid Verizon Wireless subscription as it makes no sense now considering the cost and the fact that I own my late model phone outright. I am disappointed that it does not have root, and I should have certainly checked that with this specific device before purchasing, but I do not believe I would have purchased any differently in hindsight. The things I need like wifi tethering have work-arounds, and I surprisingly don't miss downloading new CM updates every night in hopes that it would squash bugs in my service.

Update: Now I see where Walmart is selling them, but can't find them on Straight Talks site. Interesting. Maybe I will try one.

just wondering not that I am planning to switch to ST but how are speed tests? I helped someone move from T-Mobile to ST but that was on AT&T tho. with Moto G LTE and speedtests were around 6-8 mbps usually.

I just got 6mb down 2mb up when I tried speedtest. I can't remember what the ATT ST was, but I am pretty sure it was significantly higher
One hiccup that I'm looking to fix is that I cannot receive MMS from my girlfriend who has ATT. I can receive MMS from myself, so perhaps verizon senders will work. VZWINTERNET APN settings are also grayed out, so I can't screw with APN settings. Any suggestions? I don't have developer edition so no root apn managers will work

I'm using mine on straight talk (tmobile) and I get download speeds of 25mbps in my area

TMO is very generous with their data, and there are even better priced TMO MVNOs than Straight Talk. I definitely wish they had the towers in my region to provide good service, but unfortunately they don't work in much of the state.

ST has instructions for creating a new APN network when you activate the phone, in order to receive MMS and have a solid connection for data to their network. If you go to ST's website, and log into your account, it should be under one of the tabs. Alternatively, you could Google the Verizon ST APN settings, or search ST's site for them.

It started working yesterday, must have just been a network issue from the switchover

I know it's an MVNO. Apparently Verizon throttles 4g to 5mbps on Straight Talk. I wish I knew that before hand, but 3 gigs of 5mbps is more important to me than 1 - 1.5 gigs of full speed LTE on the Verizon branded prepaid for the same price. It's an unnoticeable trade-off as I haven't found anything that won't stream through Straight Talk.
The higher-speed alternative with 3 gigs would be PagePlus at $55 a month. I'm saving the $10 with ST and am still satisfied.

Thanks for posting this thread. I've been considering jumping over to Straight Talk with my Note 4, and your experience with the device and the service is helpful.

I'm also using a VZW Note 4 on ST VZW SIM and find it more than satisfactory. The process of getting it on the network was a bit convoluted but I got it working. I purchased my Certified Pre-Owned Note 4 through VZW's and didn't realize they start an activation process when they ship it. I was unable to immediately use it on ST because of this. I actually had to use a month of VZW prepaid before they'd let me off. Stupid stuff man...

I'll stick with ST on AT&T. I just ran a test and got 23.96 Mbps down and 13.54 Mpbs up. And I live in mountainous WV.

Thanks for the info on this. I am going to buy out the rest of my contract with VZW as soon as I can and save over half on my monthly bill while getting 1 more gig of data. No ringbacks or VVM but it's a good tradeoff.

I tried it but it really screwed up my VM and it ended up rejecting all VMs from missed calls. I tried at least 3 times to set it up and no dice. I just hope when I switch I have no problem.

I have galaxy note 4 n910v The speed test are not that great on straight talk using Verizon towers like 5-7 download.. 1 our less upload and 90-150 on ping test I think Verizon keeps Straight talk throttled.. I put in a metro PC's sim and was getting 25 download 3-4 upload and 35 on ping test. I currently have a sim card on way from T-Mobile and will be switching to them because T-Mobile throttles metro PC's during heavy use times .

I use ST on my note 4, only gripe I have is no OTA's so I'll have to flash these updates myself.

LTE-Verizon internet is unlocked i don't why hence my phone does not support 4g even though it's note 4 SM-N910V

Who is your network provider? Your issue is probably just apn.
