$10 family unlimited plan on AT&T? With Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know att sells the LG Optimus G.
But is anyone using the Nexus 4 on the $10/family unlimited data plan for feature phones since att doesn't carry the nexus 4? Heard people got away with $10 data plan on Galaxy Nexus. But ATT audited Nexus One owners a couple of years ago and switched them.
So LG Optimus G is similar to Nexus 4 so maybe ATT may audit Nexus 4 also?
I am getting my Nexus 4 today. I have iPhone 5 as my main line. But would like to add data to my Nexus 4 with secondary line. Not going to use much data anyways but don't want to pay $30 for data I don't need and 300mb $20 plan is a rip off.

The IMEI number of this phone is not in AT&T's system, its completely different than the optimus. You'll have to call them to make sure of the IMEI number and they should be able to put you on that plan. It will be considered a simple phone. Its $10 data with $10 unlimited text or $15 data only.

Great. Thanks.
ATT system of detecting phones is screwy. I had blackberry bold international unlocked and it didn't recognize it. But ATT recognized my unlocked T-mobile branded blackberry curve as a Blackberry Pearl.
So it seems hit or miss.

My contract is set to expire in january coming from an iphone 4, Can I just drop the iphone data and add the dumbphone data and text and make my plan cheaper?

Yeah. Seems like it. That's why I asked the question.
Sometimes ATT's systems recognized non ATT smartphones (like the original Nexus One) and ATT put people who were on the $10/15 feature phone data plan and switched them automatically onto the $30 smartphone data plan.
But I think people who had international Galaxy S3 and other non ATT phones can get away with the $10/15 feature phone data plans.

AT&T Data Plan Choice with i9000 / Bell Vibrant

I'm about to purchase a Bell Vibrant. Can anyone tell me if they are able to use the cheap non-smartphone data (which is $15/unlimited or $10/unlimited for families)? This has been the case with most non-AT&T branded smartphones I've owned but I want to be double sure before I buy. If anyone with a European i9000 using it on AT&T could tell me that would be great, as since they are essentially the same phone I'm sure AT&T would treat them the same. Also, if you could tell me how your phone shows up in the AT&T online account at att.com/mywireless that would be helpful as well. Thanks!
Yea, i have the European i9000 with the $15 unlimited data plan.

Good to hear. What does it show up as in your AT&T web control panel?
Also anyone with a Bell model want to pipe in to confirm this 100%?
get unlimited data plan, or something like 6 GB data plan
the Android Phones are super heavy on data usage

What do you mean...the cheap plans we're talking about are unlimited. That's what I have on my Milestone I just pay $10 for unlimited "dumbphone" data (I'm part of a family plan, if I wasn't it would be $15 for unlimted "dumbphone" data).
I can confirm. Bell Vibrant using Family unlimited plan $10. Hopefully it stays that way!
Oh and to answer second question, it shows up as unknown device in OLAM.

Good to hear. That's how it works with the Milestone and G1 that I have in the family.
I personally don't think that they will change it. With the Xperia X10, the IMEI's were unrecognized until AT&T got their version and then everybody was bumped to the pricey data plans. But AT&T has already had their Galaxy S for a few months, so it seems like the time to do that is passed so we should be safe. The only confusing thing is how/why AT&T recognizes Nexus Ones. I suppose Google felt they had to give the information so that they wouldn't polarize their relationship with AT&T.

Bell/Unbranded Atrix on AT&T <=> data plan upgrade...

Hi, here is my current situation: I’m using Nexus One on ATT with $10 unlimited data plan (dumb phone data on family plan). Since Nexus One was not sold at ATT they don’t recognize my IMEI number, so my data still remains $10 (for about 2 years already).
Now, if I upgrade to Bell Atrix will ATT find out and upgrade me to smartphone data? Basically does ATT have IMEI for Canadian Atrixes or unbranded Atrixes from Europe?

How can nobody know the answer to this yet! Has anyone found this out yet?
I would say don't upgrade cause they will DEFINITELY change your plan if you upgrade to a smartphone.
The real answer is nobody knows if att has bell atrix imei numbers in their database, so who knows if they'll catch you or not.

You will still be charged $10. I did this with a bell desire z and they still recognized it as a "dumb phone." Its a great loophole.

It's extremely funny how that works. If you have a dumb phone on att you can have unlimited data for $10 a month. If they don't know your phone is a smartphone, the same rules apply. However let me share what happened to me. I started beta testing phones for Motorola, Android smartphones like the Motorola Flipout and Motorola Bravo and a couple others. I figured out sense att didn't know what phone it was by the imei I could get away with unlimited for $10 a month. I took advantage of that and used tons of data with tethering and such (over 3GB a month) even though they didn't know my phone was a smartphone later on I got sent the sent me the "did you know smarphones require smartphone data plans..." and than any time after that I tried using an un-att phone, not even a smartphone, it would give me that message.
Decided I'd share. BTW, I wouldn't switch. Unlimited for $10 is an amazing deal, just don't over abuse it like I did.
When I used to work for att, I used to set my friends up on that plan. Back when the tilt(8925) was da shyt.If you going to change phones just make sure u have a dumb phones imei number in case u have to call in for any reason
Sent from Atrix 4g, with att slow azz H+
Yeah, that doesn't work anymore, i installed my simcard (from my Nexus) into iphone and within 25 mins recieved text saying something like "welcome in, your data plan was upgraded to $25/month".

[Q] USA Users, What plan are you using?

I recently discovered that ATT gophone (prepay or pay as you go) for android phones is only 50/month and everything is unlimited...voice/text/data. There is no way you can go over any limits, even if you tried to.
Can anyone verify this is actually the case and if they use this?
Apparently you have to purchase an additional data plan if you are using IOS or WP7, but not Android. I'd love to know if anyone knows why this is the case.
I'm currently on tmobile im paying over 100/month, but the 3g limitations on the GNote is maing me switch to att, thankfully. This should cover the cost of the note in less than one year.
Thanks,
Jason

I think its his/her enterprise data plan.
My Note's on the way - should be here on tuesday. Meanwhile, my 2 yr verizon contract ends tomorrow, so i signed up with at&t. I picked the post-paid month-to-month plan that includes 450min. + unlimited data (for non-smartphones) which would bring my monthly bill to $70. I was thinking of doing the $50 gophone thing but then i read that coverage not as extensive, speed throttling on prepaid, etc. so i'd rather just spend the little extra for the benefits of postpaid.

Sorry to break it to you, but I don't think that it works like that. The $50.00 unlimited plan only provides unlimited data for non-smartphones. You can get that plan with an Android phone, but if you do, you will have no Internet access. If you don't talk much and don't use too much data, you could go with the $25.00/250min plan plus the $25.00/500MB data plan. (Source: I just chatted with a support rep.)
Personally, I'm hoping that they either release a US-compatible CDMA version in the near future, or that the people in this thread succeed in getting the existing Note to run on T-Mobile. If either happens soon, I will probably import one immediately.
Grandfathered $30/mo unlimited data plan for me. Good thing too, because I usually go through 10+GB of data per month!! Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and Google Music. Make sense now?
So your bill at the end of the month is $30 plus tax? Is there a voice anf text plan or is this all inclusive? This is through att and if so is pre or post pay?

He has the grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan. It's $30/month on your bill. It stopped being obtainable about 1 year ago.
Yes I am crystal clear on the $30/ month part for unlimited data. I'm ado quite clear on the definition of grandfathered in this context. This however does not answer my question regarding
1) which service provider(I'm assuming ATT, but I'm not sure)?
2) does this also include voice and text or does he have those plans in addition to his grandfathered 30/month data plan?
Thanks,
Jason

This is patently false. I've been on the non-smartphone data with AT&T for over 3 years using a variety of imported, unlocked smartphones (android and otherwise).
Well that's good news for me then. Do you have full internet capabilities? Also could you tell me which plan, provider, pre or post pay?
Thanks!

I am post-paid on AT&T, 450min/mo @ $39.99 + $10 unlimited data for non smartphones (MEdiaNet) + $20 Unlimited texting / mobile to mobile calling. If you search about there are a ton of people on AT&T doing this. The caveat is that your IMEI number cannot be in AT&T's system as a smartphone. That means you need to use an international market unlocked phone. There are people doing this with Galaxy SII and you don't need root or anything else.
Also, if you are bringing your own hardware (GNote) you don't need to sign a contract either (even post-paid) so you can quit whenever you want. Just get a SIM and activate it.
You can always go to T-Mobile and do the $50 prepaid contract that does unlimited talk, text, and web. But you have to provide your own cell phone or purchase one from them or elsewhere. This is a really good deal, it also gives 4g if you have a 4g phone.

Sadly, T-Mo uses AWS frequencies for HSPDA that aren't available on the Note.
Ok so why wouldn't you do the 50/month prepay (att) which has unlimited voice/text/data and use the same dumbphone imei?
It seems you currently pay 69/month with some limitations.

Medianet or Smartphone Data Plan on At&t?

So will At&t recognize this phone as Smartphone and will require $20 or $30 data plan or medianet plan will work? Any feedback?
Smartphone, obviously.
Drumist doesn't know what he's talking about. The Galaxy Nexus got about a year of medianet service, I think we can expect the Nexus 4 to do the same since AT&T won't have the IMEI's for these phones.

What do you mean 1 year of service?

The gnex was marked as not medianet about a week ago along with many other Samsung phones. The Nexus 4 is likely to last longer since LG does not have a history of sharing IMEI's with carriers.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
The nexus 4 should work fine on medianet just like every other unlocked unbranded att compatible device. With the exception of samsung and htc nexus devices.
My international galaxy note has been working fine on medianet for almost a year now. Unless LG gave att their IMEI's the nexus 4 should fly under the radar with medianet.
So would we just use the imei number of the nexus 4 and select the unlimited data for feature phones? Even with that route it comes to about 70 but 61 with a corporate discount. Might do this if possible.

Are there any updates on this? Has anyone tried?
For those using medianet plan did att throttle your speeds? were you able to get hspa+ on medianet vs the regular data plan($30/3GB)?
how do we choose medianet plan?
I recently received a text message stating that I needed a data plan in order to use my current phone.
(Pantech Link with 10/month unlimited data is my current plan)
I have switched out my at&t sim into these phones
1. Galaxy s blaze 4g
2. t989 (tmobile galaxy s ii)
I received this messages after 4 months of continuous usage on the blaze.
I didnt realize at&t had tmobile IMEIs
I called up att and they stated that "I was using a samsung and their system doesnt glitch"
how can I avoid this text message switching me onto a smartphone data plan.
So what phones can I use with the media-net plan and be completely protected?
This is my experience. I've had the international sgs2 and galaxy note. I was able to use the non-smartphone plan with both of those. Last week I received my nexus 4 and called at&t to change from a smartphone plan to a non-smartphone plan. I told them that I had an old phone and I wanted to remove the lte plan and add the $15 media net. Everything went well until she tried to add the media net to my plan. She said that she couldn't find my phone's imei in their data base. I told her that its not an at&t phone, its an old gsm phone that I purchased from eBay. She fiddled around for probably 10 minutes trying to find out exactly what kind of phone I had. I could here her typing and talking to somebody and then she read from her computer screen, "Google Nexus 4". She said that she used Google to find out what kind of phone I had. This is the first time this has happened to me. She said that now they can not add any data to a phone if they don't know exactly what the phone is.

Question is;
Why did you give her IMEI from your N4?
Is your sgs2 still working? What IMEI do they have for sgs2?

No data plan needed on AT&T.

With AT&T, the nexus 4 unlocked will not require a data plan because AT&T does not have that phone imei number in their system or database. I used an unlocked nexus s before with no data, so this will be the same. Even if you want data it'll be only $15 unlimited HSPA+ or $20 unlimited data and text since it'll be considered a standard phone.
I'm on AT&T's HTC One X without data plan. You would just call them with a dumb phone saying you sold your smartphone, and they will take off the data plan for ya. Once they take it off, you would insert the sim back in to your phone.

But if they ever did add them they could detect the IMEI then they would change your plan. I do see on their website it is technically possible to do this and comes out to 70 a month at the cheapest, but is it really DC-HSPA+ or some downgraded version of it?

no no i was wondering is it possible to use the 15 dollar unlimited feature phone data option? If i was to activate it ona feature phone first then put it in my sim. When do you think they would add the smartphone one. But I will test the tmobile prepaid sim i got in a tester phone I have first before in it because Im on sprint need to test my network options lol.
Why not use $45 Straight Talk unlimited talk/text/data (which uses AT&T) and not fuss with AT&T at all?
