AT&T Data Plan Choice with i9000 / Bell Vibrant - Galaxy S I9000 General

I'm about to purchase a Bell Vibrant. Can anyone tell me if they are able to use the cheap non-smartphone data (which is $15/unlimited or $10/unlimited for families)? This has been the case with most non-AT&T branded smartphones I've owned but I want to be double sure before I buy. If anyone with a European i9000 using it on AT&T could tell me that would be great, as since they are essentially the same phone I'm sure AT&T would treat them the same. Also, if you could tell me how your phone shows up in the AT&T online account at att.com/mywireless that would be helpful as well. Thanks!

Yea, i have the European i9000 with the $15 unlimited data plan.

Good to hear. What does it show up as in your AT&T web control panel?
Also anyone with a Bell model want to pipe in to confirm this 100%?

get unlimited data plan, or something like 6 GB data plan
the Android Phones are super heavy on data usage

What do you mean...the cheap plans we're talking about are unlimited. That's what I have on my Milestone I just pay $10 for unlimited "dumbphone" data (I'm part of a family plan, if I wasn't it would be $15 for unlimted "dumbphone" data).

I can confirm. Bell Vibrant using Family unlimited plan $10. Hopefully it stays that way!
Oh and to answer second question, it shows up as unknown device in OLAM.

Good to hear. That's how it works with the Milestone and G1 that I have in the family.
I personally don't think that they will change it. With the Xperia X10, the IMEI's were unrecognized until AT&T got their version and then everybody was bumped to the pricey data plans. But AT&T has already had their Galaxy S for a few months, so it seems like the time to do that is passed so we should be safe. The only confusing thing is how/why AT&T recognizes Nexus Ones. I suppose Google felt they had to give the information so that they wouldn't polarize their relationship with AT&T.

Data plan only in Canada

I currently have a voice + data + sms plan with Fido in Canada.
I don't use much voice and sms on my SGS. So I'm planning to use a cheap pre-paid plan with a simple dumb phone. But I still want to use 3G data on my SGS.
Data plans are usually for laptops and ain't cheap. I just need 500MB per month.
Then I found out that Bell have Data plans for tablets.
$20 per month for 500 MB, that's perfect for me. And that's data only.
Now I'm not entirely sure that this plan will work with my SGS.
I have the I9000M Bell Vibrant version of the SGS, and I think it should have the same 3G network connection as the Galaxy Tab, so if I pop in the SIM card it should work. I asked someone from bell to be sure:
Dawn: Hello, thanks for visiting bell.ca. How can I help you today?
Gael: Hello, I have a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, I don't need to call or send SMS. I only need mobile data access.
Gael: can I use one of the data plans for tablet?
Gael: like the Monthly flex plan for the Galaxy Tab
Dawn: Sure, you can use Tablet plans with Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Gael: I would use it on my Galaxy S Vibrant instead
Gael: not on a Galaxy Tab
Gael: Is that possible?
Dawn: I am sorry, that is not possible.
Gael: The hardware should support it though, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab have the same 3G connection
Gael: Do I need to purchase a Galaxy Tab with these tablet plans?
Dawn: I understand that, but it is not possible.
Gael: Ok thanks.

I don't see why a data plan for Galaxy Tab wouldn't work on a Galaxy S...
I dont see why Bell charges $20 for 500mb on a tablet but charges $25 to add a 500mb data plan to your phone......

Because more people use data plans on their phones than there are people with tablets. its all about the money.....
Wind mobiles $40 all you can eat voice+international+sms+unlimited data
i totally dumped Bell, Fido, Rogers for Wind
[obligatory "Canada's big 3 suck" comment]
Rather than go into detail about the specific device, why not just state that you have purchased your own tablet and want to subscribe to the tablet data plan @ $20 / month. Keep it simple so they don't need to navigate down their scripts and shut you out.
Yep, the $20 plan works.
You can even get the pre-paid $15/250MB plan.
The unlimited voice data sms plan for $40 from wind mobile seems to be the best solution for heavy usage.
But I'm a low usage person. I seldom call or sms. I mostly use data to communicate with my relatives.
For low usage, it's cheaper to use pre-paid voice & sms on a separate dumb phone.
But I don't see the point of using an android phone without a data plan. So for my SGS, the solution is a Data only plan.
Both rogers and bell seems to have these cheaper plans:
$20 for 500 MB flex plan
$15 for 250 MB pre-paid
Actually I know I only use 150 MB per month in average (plus wifi usage at home and office) so the pre paid plan is perfect for my SGS.
But today I went to both a rogers shop and a bell booth and I pretended that I had a Galaxy Tab at home and wanted to use a data plan with it. I asked to buy the SIM card right away but they ask me to bring the device to do the setup...
Damn it!

I would dump Fido for Wind too but they matched the Wind plan back in September. They aren't price matching plans this time around though. Btw, the unlimited plan offer ended yesterday.
Fido had an unlimited plan?
Cancelled my data service with them last year ... overcharging hard, so I'd rather use starbucks wifi than pay Fido to mess with me.
Even with data and voicemail gone I'm still coughing up close to 40 a month. I've seriously been thinking about moving to Wind. I have an international i9000 so that should make it easy to cross over, right?

Try again. Go to an other store. Or maybe a Futureshop/Best Buy. I know you can do it. The only thing that sucks is that you can't have a pre-paid voice plan + pre paid data plan on the same SIM card.

1) Hit other stores
2) Insist (politely) that you'd like to just buy the SIM and plan at the moment. You can't afford the time to go back and forth and you're familiar with the setup)
or
3) Can you purchase that plan online or via their 800 #?

FIDO unlimited is FAKE! read the fine prints
they tried to match it for me to keep me with them, but they admitted they couldn't match the offer WIND was providing
They kept dumping me all these Extras and Upgrade to "Unlimited" etc, etc, but then when you read the fine prints, it's only for incoming, for SMS, and some other stuff, but you do not get unlimited outgoing minutes, you do not get free unlimited Canada & USA long distance, you do not get fido zones
also there was another fine print on the SMS, which also was a fake claim to unlimited SMS / international SMS, there was some limit hidden there

Why not just purchase a Bell SIM card, and activate over the phone. The cost of a sim card probably $20-25. You could also try the "Bell Self Activation" for android. Go to the Google Market - Search "Bell Self Serve" install it, and try that. If you are successful, you can use the Bell Self Serve to "manage, change" your bell data account.
However, the Bell guys could be correct in needing the device to set it up for the Bell WIFI spots, since it is included in all tablet plans. A visit may be required at this point
FYI: hxxp://support.bell.ca/en-on/Mobility/Smartphones_and_mobile_internet/How_to_activate_and_manage_my_iPad_data_plan?step=3
replace xx with tt (and delete any additional spaces)
Cheers.
Hey I got lucky, today I tried a rogers store again and didn't pretend anything. Just said I wanted the 500MB/$20 tab data only monthly plan for a Galaxy S. And the guy just said ok if it works. He didn't know how to setup the APN, I did it myself right in the shop, and it worked as expected. And now I have the plan. Why so simple this time? Maybe the staff guy was new or didn't really care what plan I wanted as long as I got one. That's better than the answer from Bell...
So now just need to cancel the fido plan. Thanks guys for the suggestions. Could be useful for some other peps looking for data only on a phone.
And yea a pre paid data + voice on one SIM card would be a sweet option for low usage guys! But obviously it's not interesting for telecom companies, it doesn't pay much.

any idea on how to get the tab sim to work in a phone? I have a bell tab plan, I want to use the sim in a galaxy s for a data only plan. I tried putting the sim in the galaxy s, but it does not work ....

AT&T's 4G policies revealed. Will you drop ATT?

As per android Centrals Findings today,
According to the memo, the data tiers for 4G are the same as the 3G plans, namely $15 for each 200 MB or 2 GB for $25.00 (with $10 per GB overage). This means unlimited data in no longer an option, because you will have to change plans. We have no idea how this will affect customers with unlimited data grandfathered in who buy a phone off-contract and just drop their SIM card in, but I would imagine AT&T can tell with a little bit of auditing.

Nevermind, corrected
We can keep our existing plans and be grandfathered in.

Lol @ AT&T. Instead of attracting customers after losing the iPhone, they scare off existing ones. First $500 for Atrix dock, now the stupidly overprives $25/2GB data.
And that after the first Atrix reviews that showed that AT&T's "4G" is actually slower than their 3G. Oh yeah, awesome upgrade.
Rephrasing the famous phrase.. "Enough is enough. I've HAD IT with these MOTHERF***ING policies on this MOTHERF***ING AT&T."
So far it's either VZW or TMo for me. Since I travel a lot, most likely TMo with their unlim data plan, when Pyramid comes out.
i've been in contact with at&t.
they have stated that i can bring my grandfathered unlimited data plan over along with a new 2 year contact agreement if i decide to get the atrix.
if i want to tether, i would need to change my data plan.
this is from an online chat. and who knows, maybe this policy will change in the upcoming days.
i have seen this mentioned on a number of other forums. apparently grandfathered plans are fine.
so nothing really changes...
Androidandme is reporting (I'd link directly, but can't do it yet) that an AT&T rep has contacted them to clarify the 4G policy:
We were just contacted by a representative from AT&T who saw our post about the leaked 4G policy memo, and wanted to clarify a very important point about their new 4G plans. I quote:
Customers who currently have an unlimited plan can upgrade to a 4G device and keep their unlimited plans.
They did not dispute the validity of the leaked memo, but they were kind enough to tell us a part of the story that the original leak missed. So put away those pitchforks. Thanks for the clarification AT&T!

So, yeah: no need to panic.
I wasn't lucky enough to be grandfathered into the unlimited plan. I currently have the $15 200mb for my Samsung Captivate. Assuming I upgrade to the Atrix, am I going to have to pay an additional $15 to get 200mb of 4g, making the total for data $30 for 400mbs?

Right you are. Unfortunately, AT&T eliminated the unlimited plan a long time ago; really, I'm surprised the new 4G policy isn't going to kick out everyone who still has it.

I couldn't agree more! I'm so glad that I overpaid for unlimited back when I didn't use much data. Still, $90/mo for two lines of unlimited data and unlimited messaging is a lot, so glad that AT&T announced unlimited mobile to mobile so I can drop my minutes!
I'm never leaving AT&T until another carrier gets real unlimited data. Good things cell execs underestimated how much data we can use!

I've been grandfathered in on the unlimited plan for quite some time now. When I got my Captivate last July, the sales rep tried to convince me I HAD to change my data plan to the new pricing scheme. Thankfully, it ain't happen.
Even if you went somewhere else, almost all the operators are moving to this type of plan.
2Gigs of data is quite alot, unless you are using it for your main internet connection for your house. I've been on the 2Gig plan for about a year now, and I rarely go above 600-700 meg with lots of audio streaming (sirius/xm, pandora) and Uverse TV to go, and some tethering from time to time.

Negative. Featurephone/dumbphone unlimited data doesn't transfer over to smartphones. The only way I could see to get around that is to buy a phone off contract and pop your SIM card in it. You'd probably have to hack the phone to have it report as something else, though, otherwise ATT would catch it.

ATT Forcing HSPA+/4G Data ???

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...ls.jsp?q_package=sku5100371&_requestid=618639
DataPro 2GB for HSPA+/4G Smartphone includes 2GB. Once 2GB is exceeded, an additional 1GB is automatically provided at a rate of $10 for each additional 1GB provided. Unused data usage does not carry over. For HSPA+/4G SmartPhones ONLY.
ATT is selling this type of data plan with the new ATRIX, what kind of impact could this have on us UNLIMITED 'Grandfathered' users that were thinking about buying the phone outright?
if i put my 3G card in, am i gonna get hosed? is ATT going to automatically try and switch my data plan to the 'required' plan for the 4G phone? even though i bought it outright? am i possibly going to have to fight to get the 'GFD' plan back after?
i know its all speculation at this point because the actual phone isnt out yet, but my gut tells me we might not like the answer...
I was wondering about the same thing, but I don't think we have to worry right now, I intend to get it then use it and in a month check, should they mess with me, I'll pull the information straight from their website with a datestamp that I printed stating that Grandfathered in gets to keep their plan. It really would be as simple as letting me keep it or I'll take my company off AT&T.

I was able to "upgrade" to the Atrix and i checked the option that said "I do not want to make changes to my data plan" since i am grandfathered in as truly "unlimited".
I dont expect to see any changes once i put my SIM card in. They relaxed their "grandfather" clause a little recently and im guessing what i experienced is exactly that. before they FORCED you to change your plan. Now you have an option.
For people with unlimited plans, you can still keep it, it becomes an option on the data plan picker that only someone with an unlimited plan can see. And yes it is 4g ready. And no it doesn't cost any more money.

It is not a problem at all.
All you have to do is swap the sim. cards and you are good to go. Your plan does not change at all and AT$T isn't going to penalize you.
They are losing 16% of their customers do to the iphone switch.

I have a tangential question.
I know going over 2GB adds 1GB for $10 on Data Pro. But what if you exceed the 150mb on the Data lite? Does it auto bump you to 2GB and Data Pro for the month?
If you have the unlimited data theres a new HSPA+ version of the unlimited plan that your moved to
in regards to the $15 plan its actually 200mB, not 150, if you go over your charged another 15 for another 200, if you go over that your billed another 15 for 200 more and so forth
Lastly if your buying a device like the Atrix your a moron to think 200MB for an entire month is going to cut it, in my opinion that plan shouldnt even be offered
Hehe, so they charge you another $15 for 200MB but on the other plan its $10 for 1GB? Terrible.
I agree with you a 200MB plan likely wont get you anywhere unless you are covered by wi-fi everywhere you go and otherwise don't use data almost at all.
Also, how does tehthering work if you have a grandfathered unlimited plan? And could you not just root and use thethering without having the tetherming plan? Say if you were on the 2GB plan.
Ive never quite understood the covered everywhere by wifi don't have wifi driving or everywhere that you travel, unless you never leave the house
If you want tethering, officially through ATT you have to get the 45 dollar 4gb plan, and lose the unlimited
An app like PDAnet would be a solution for tethering to keep the unlim plan and you dont even need to be rooted to run it
I still have my unlimited data and my Inspire

lol you're absolutely insane if you believe that to be true. Every business analyst website worth its money on the internet is saying Verizon didn't make much of an impact with the release of the iPhone4. They sold a lot of iPhones...but an estimated 90% of them were to people that were already Verizon subscribers. The 1 million iPhones that they keep quoting was *ONLY* to pre-orders made by Verizon customers.
Also, it has absolutely nothing to do with this topic. AT&T already said before the phone was announced they would move grandfathered unlimited plans ahead with new contracts (same thing happened with their last launch).
I'm glad to hear that AT&T is allowing us to keep our grandfathered unlimited plans. I've been planning on moving up to Android with the Atrix but was dreading losing my unlimited data plan that I've got on my current iPhone 3G.
If everything works out like everyone here is saying then it looks like I'll get to have my cake and eat it too.

FALSE. I got my wife the inspire 4g, and yes, the rep changed her from unlimited data(captivate) to unlimited 4G data(inspire, atrix etc.). So yes, you do have to make a switch to "4G." Try taking your sim card straight from your captivate, or any other 3g phone and put it in the atrix, you can make calls and text, but no data connection.

Did you get the Inspire 4G before AT&T relaxed their "Unlimited Grandfather in clause"? If o, that may have been your problem. Recently (2 months or so) they have said that if you have real unlimited plan and upgrade, you can keep your plan. You dont have to change. This is different to what they were saying when the iPHone 4 came out. Get iPhone 4 and you NEED to change your plan.
Also in regards to just putting in your SIM card into an Atrix, Do you have one? Did you try this? Or are you basing this on your Inspire experience?
No dice on keeping "unlimited" plan!
My current ATT Blackberry Data plan is "unlimited" and shows up like this on the Premiere site:
GPRS WAP/BBRY UNLTD DOM - BBUB
I called to confirm that I would be able to keep my n=unlimited plan and they told me that it would be changed to the 2gb-$25 4G plan immediately upon power up of the Atrix... AND that I could not go back to the unlimited plan even if I return the Atrix within 30 days!
Is the above one of the "grandfathered" plans? And if so, how is everyone else here managing to keep their plan?

[Q] USA Users, What plan are you using?

I recently discovered that ATT gophone (prepay or pay as you go) for android phones is only 50/month and everything is unlimited...voice/text/data. There is no way you can go over any limits, even if you tried to.
Can anyone verify this is actually the case and if they use this?
Apparently you have to purchase an additional data plan if you are using IOS or WP7, but not Android. I'd love to know if anyone knows why this is the case.
I'm currently on tmobile im paying over 100/month, but the 3g limitations on the GNote is maing me switch to att, thankfully. This should cover the cost of the note in less than one year.
Thanks,
Jason

I think its his/her enterprise data plan.
My Note's on the way - should be here on tuesday. Meanwhile, my 2 yr verizon contract ends tomorrow, so i signed up with at&t. I picked the post-paid month-to-month plan that includes 450min. + unlimited data (for non-smartphones) which would bring my monthly bill to $70. I was thinking of doing the $50 gophone thing but then i read that coverage not as extensive, speed throttling on prepaid, etc. so i'd rather just spend the little extra for the benefits of postpaid.

Sorry to break it to you, but I don't think that it works like that. The $50.00 unlimited plan only provides unlimited data for non-smartphones. You can get that plan with an Android phone, but if you do, you will have no Internet access. If you don't talk much and don't use too much data, you could go with the $25.00/250min plan plus the $25.00/500MB data plan. (Source: I just chatted with a support rep.)
Personally, I'm hoping that they either release a US-compatible CDMA version in the near future, or that the people in this thread succeed in getting the existing Note to run on T-Mobile. If either happens soon, I will probably import one immediately.
Grandfathered $30/mo unlimited data plan for me. Good thing too, because I usually go through 10+GB of data per month!! Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and Google Music. Make sense now?
So your bill at the end of the month is $30 plus tax? Is there a voice anf text plan or is this all inclusive? This is through att and if so is pre or post pay?

He has the grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan. It's $30/month on your bill. It stopped being obtainable about 1 year ago.
Yes I am crystal clear on the $30/ month part for unlimited data. I'm ado quite clear on the definition of grandfathered in this context. This however does not answer my question regarding
1) which service provider(I'm assuming ATT, but I'm not sure)?
2) does this also include voice and text or does he have those plans in addition to his grandfathered 30/month data plan?
Thanks,
Jason

This is patently false. I've been on the non-smartphone data with AT&T for over 3 years using a variety of imported, unlocked smartphones (android and otherwise).
Well that's good news for me then. Do you have full internet capabilities? Also could you tell me which plan, provider, pre or post pay?
Thanks!

Sorry, misread.
He's probably on VZW or AT&T and the Grandfathered Data Plan is just for data.

I am post-paid on AT&T, 450min/mo @ $39.99 + $10 unlimited data for non smartphones (MEdiaNet) + $20 Unlimited texting / mobile to mobile calling. If you search about there are a ton of people on AT&T doing this. The caveat is that your IMEI number cannot be in AT&T's system as a smartphone. That means you need to use an international market unlocked phone. There are people doing this with Galaxy SII and you don't need root or anything else.
Also, if you are bringing your own hardware (GNote) you don't need to sign a contract either (even post-paid) so you can quit whenever you want. Just get a SIM and activate it.
You can always go to T-Mobile and do the $50 prepaid contract that does unlimited talk, text, and web. But you have to provide your own cell phone or purchase one from them or elsewhere. This is a really good deal, it also gives 4g if you have a 4g phone.

Sadly, T-Mo uses AWS frequencies for HSPDA that aren't available on the Note.
Ok so why wouldn't you do the 50/month prepay (att) which has unlimited voice/text/data and use the same dumbphone imei?
It seems you currently pay 69/month with some limitations.

My Note is arriving this week. I am planning to use Straight Talk following this wiki:
http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/Straight_Talk_Android
$45/mo prepaid for unlimited talk/text/data using AT&T towers.

No data plan needed on AT&T.

With AT&T, the nexus 4 unlocked will not require a data plan because AT&T does not have that phone imei number in their system or database. I used an unlocked nexus s before with no data, so this will be the same. Even if you want data it'll be only $15 unlimited HSPA+ or $20 unlimited data and text since it'll be considered a standard phone.
I'm on AT&T's HTC One X without data plan. You would just call them with a dumb phone saying you sold your smartphone, and they will take off the data plan for ya. Once they take it off, you would insert the sim back in to your phone.

But if they ever did add them they could detect the IMEI then they would change your plan. I do see on their website it is technically possible to do this and comes out to 70 a month at the cheapest, but is it really DC-HSPA+ or some downgraded version of it?

They do reactivate your data plan but from what I seen its pretty rare. I have some friends running ATT without data plan and they haven't activated a data plan for them yet.

no no i was wondering is it possible to use the 15 dollar unlimited feature phone data option? If i was to activate it ona feature phone first then put it in my sim. When do you think they would add the smartphone one. But I will test the tmobile prepaid sim i got in a tester phone I have first before in it because Im on sprint need to test my network options lol.
Why not use $45 Straight Talk unlimited talk/text/data (which uses AT&T) and not fuss with AT&T at all?
