a real fix for charging problems - Galaxy S III General

ive been reading the thread and im sure no one has said this
my girlfriend and i had the same problem with jelly bean she has S3 3G i have S3 4G LTE
when i plug a cable with 4 pins (we have 3 of them) in ether my phone or my gf phone both on JB they charge as they please but when we plug a cable with 5 pins (we only have 1) in they charge fine
before the update to JB from ICS on her S3 3G it charged fine with the 4 pin cable
so the only conclusion i could come to was that it was to do with the 4 pin 5 pin cable
if you look in the end of the cable you plug in to your phone you should find 5 pins not 4 if you find 4 pins in the end of the cable you plug in to your phone not the end you plug into your charger or usb port (not to say anyone is stupid im just making sure im clear thats all )
if you find you have the problem you can just call samsung the number to call is on there website and they will just replace it the options for the s3 are early on it even says if your calling about the s3
they sent her a complet charger and cable her replacement was fine but my cable had the same fault i rang them back and the appologised and they are sending me another replacement and i asked them to make sure it had 5 pins they put a note on what was said and i hope the person that finds it in the warehouse looks
now her phone chages perfectly fine and so dose my phone when i use her charger
i even called a service center and spoke to a engernear just to make sure before i called samsung
i just hope this helps people
if anyone has any questions just ask if i can answer them i will

Very Good write up but i honestly believe it is the board giving most users the problem. I myself have my S3 cable and have my One X cable which both have 5 pin and the only way i can get mine to charge 100% of the time is via the computer. When i plug it in to the wall, i can only get it to charge about 30% of the time.

im not trying say it will fix the problem all im sayiny really is that for some people it will be this problem i will say the first S3 4G LTE had a charging problem that was not to do with 4 pins as it had 5 but that was the thing that made me think about it and now i have S3 4G and the gf a S3 3G that charge fine on the 5 pin cable perfectly fine on JB and dont charge correctly with the three 4 pin cables so what else could i conclude from that

I've had many charging issues myself, as a last resort i purchased a new usb lead, which happens to be a 5 pin one, and my S3 is charging faster than ever - the original lead was a 4 pin, so in my case using a 5 pin has solved my weeks of frustration

[Q] Charger/USB Cable issues

I've already apologized for coming off an iphone, but these little things are mounting and I feel the need to share. The input of this cable is a constant struggle. I find myself trying 3 and 4 times to actually get it in the bottom of the phone, and then.....nothing happens. At least the iphone jack had a press in on the side to get it in and out. So no charge, or it shows it charging and 5 mins. later nothing again. So that's coming from the outlet, but if I plug it in my pc it goes crazy with the sounds and asks what i want to do. So, you think ok some loose pins on either end? NO! I've checked and both ends look secure and neither simulate the problem when shaken or tugged or moved around. I have read all about soldering, but I am not able to do that yet, and with no ability to buy new wires in the US I am living on a dying charge. Are these wires so tempermental for everyone?
Ive had no issues charging but I know how you feel about getting the charger in in the first place, takes a couple of goes thats for sure!

Yes it could be a bit easier to get it home but no problems once it is connected
getting it in can be fiddly. hold it steady, line it up then shove it in!

Put some hair around it!!
It's official!!!
After the whole day of wiggling and changing connection from usb to wall and even car usb the phone said battery error. Either your charger of battery is malfunctioning. Please check immediately. So the battery registered full, but then said 89% and then only 81%. I'm hoping to get a new charger and battery when the dell USA comes online.
I have 2 cables. 1 works correctly but the other charges when it feels like it. I have a support request in with Dell have yet to hear anything. The sooner cheaper 3rd party cables become available the better as I would keep more spares then.
that sucks. I've been considering the streak, well really wanted it and now that they've finally announced it, not sure i want it anymore cuz of its proprietary port. Why couldn't they have just used micro or mini USB like everybody else?
Everyone's house i go to has a micro/mini usb cable laying around so i never have to take a charger with me anywhere. And since my past 3 phones all used micro or mini usb, i have a bunch of those cables and chargers all over my house. Now with this crap i'm gonna have to buy several cables, 1 for the office, living room, car, etc. that is if i do get the device.

Phone won't charge :(

I'm on my phone now so I can't find the thread on this if there is one. I thought i was the only one with the issue, but I found an article on engadget.
I have a best buy protection but no best buy has any, anymore.
I'm going to make this quick, which was the best solution for getting a replacement? My 30 day ran out, and no best buys have any atm. I'm going to call like once a week and hope some get some in, and hope they don't lie about it.

Take it to the store to at least set them in motion to get you another. Also, another store might have one. Possibly a drive, but worth it. In any case the best thing to do is to let them see it and know about the problem.
my brothers and my phones were doing this as well. turned out it wasnt the usb port but it was his cable. the cables htc sends are pretty weak. ive gone through 2 so far. you could try a new cable. my evo has bungee jumped off my night stand a few times...wont charge right unless i put side pressure on cable...after new cable charges fine.
ive had the same thing just recently happen to me. i bought some cheap cables off of ebay and they worked for a week or so then my phone stopped charging and being recognized as being plugged in then i tried the cable supplied by HTC and same thing! Now, its very sporadic. None of the cables i have work in the front usb ports (1 in a separate installed card reader and 2 infront of the case), SOMETIMES the HTC cable will work with the ports in the back and the only time i can get a consistent charge and data signal to the computer is through a powered usb hub(power cord to the wall) with the HTC cable, one of the cheap chinese cables i shortened fro 3 feet to about 2 and another small cable (maybe 1-1.5ft) cable i got in desperate times at microcenter. The fact that in consistently works in the powered hub tells me that somehow, something with the amperage needed to register as plugged in or charged has changed or gone wrong on the Evo side because my machine is a well built custom build computer and i tested it in 2 other high-end custom builds i did for friends of mine and i have the same problem through all of their usb ports as well, so i know its not my motherboard giving me lip. i would like to here another statement from HTC soon about this as more people start becoming more vocal about this issue.
BTW, this literally started happening to me 2 days ago and i got mine on release day. HW REV: 02
It seems all too strange to me that this little incident surfaces on the internet basically the EXACT same time i experience it. Sounds like a little quality control in some parts used in the charging circuit got over looked and we have the same part going at about the same time for alot of people.
Wow, you are the first person that I have seen complain about this:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/23/htc-evo-4g-suffering-occasional-micro-usb-port-issues/
I must change the comment I made there now.
Evidently on the last update they changed something vital. Mine won't charge via the computer at all. It just stays at whatever percentage it's presently at. It won't drain either though. I've tried three different batteries too. All the same thing. The only way I can charge is by plugging it into the wall socket.

Ditto the included cable stopped working within 2 weeks, and I've gone through 3 car chargers. I have yet to get a good micro usb charger/cable they are all junk
Wouldn't you know it... As soon as I post something about it, it starts charging again. It charges really slow though. It's taken four hours to charge from 62% to 82% via the computer. It's not even worth it. I'll just have to charge it via the wall plug.
I kind of had the same issue today after installing a new ROM. I removed the HTC Sync earlier to get Revolked 3 working. But after that my phone USB cord wouldn't charge, or even connect. It would for a few seconds, then it would just act like it wasn't plugged in. But installed the HTC Sync again, and was back to normal where my PC would charge the phone.
Hopefully this insight helps someone.

Thats because it "trickle" charges via the USB.. This is why they say if you are having battery issues to charge your phone this way.
Yeah I have the same problem with my phone not charging I was transferring files back and forth and after that it started messing up and I have to put the phone In a weird position for it to charge...very slowly might I add...very weird though that this started at the same time endgadget posted up the article

Fixing Galaxy Note problems

Hey guys, I created this thread to chronicle my attempt in fixing my Galaxy Note's broken USB dock connector.
The problem: The phone charges only when off. MTP/USB mass storage won't work. On some roms Car mode wackiness ensued. It seemed like it was possessed; exactly like another persons detail of the problem.
Attempt to fix it: Contacted three wholesalers in China at Alibaba.com for the dock connector for Galaxy Note. Waiting on response right now.
So far I have eleminated everything in my troubleshooting. I've tried multiple custom roms and went and tried two different stock roms with no luck. I also have tried plugging in different kinds of usb cables. I also tried plugging them in different computers.
Anyone can post they're problem-->solution here for future reference.
I found this on google and I thought it was very helpful. HERE IS THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR GALAXY NOTE:

I am afraid there is no solution for this type of behavior at this point. I am too had the same experience.
I am awaiting for another responds email from Germany(where my Note came from) to send mine in for a repair. Until then, I can still use my Note with external battery/charger that I got from Amazon.
good luck-
Are guys plugging the cord in upside down or something? Ive had galaxy s, sgs2 and now note since release day and havent experienced this issue.
GALAXY NOTE
Did you guys try use difference charger? I face the same problem once where the charging mode keep changing to dock mode on and off while charging. After i change it use others charger (spare), now everything is ok.
My theory is that the charger started to malfunction n produce too low or too high voltage which trigger the dock mode..my 2 cents.. ;P correct me if im wrong..

After having 2 SGNote units being bricked and (luckily) replaced with a new unit everytime, I found that the root cause for the SGNote being bricked is a weak USB interface and protection circuit. At first I thought I just messed up the rooting process that's why I bricked the device. When my 2nd replacement unit also got bricked, I traced back that the only common denominator was a rogue iphone charger that I used to recharge the device. Knowing that the weakness of the SGNote is the USB circuit, I'm now careful to use no other charger but the stock charger that came with the unit.

Yeah this makes sense.
Anyway this is the part I'm trying to acquire:

I strongly believe that the Galaxy S2 USB problems are of similar nature and the solution was to replace the USB dock connector. This gives me a lot of hope since it's easy enough to do. There is no soldering involved AFAIK since it just came off during the Galaxy Note teardown video on youtube @2:28 and @3:36 (ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFDr3PQMTxw). Correct me if I'm wrong.
its definitely a hardware issue and has been traced to the usb port inside the phone. I have the same issue and I am also waiting for the part to replace the damaged one inside my phone.
here is what I am doing to make my phone function-able:
When you connect the usb cord to charge the phone you have to press it down hard and then slide it out. this will temporarily fix the physical usb port pins and allow your phone to function normally. you have to do this every time when you connect and disconnect the usb cord. I will use my phone like this until the part becomes available to buy. I have a feeling, this phone is very delicately designed and can get bricked all by itself.
My note does not charge with Three of my HTC chargers neither does it charge with another car charger.but charges fine with the Samsung charger.has sometimes issues with otg with Samsung otg cable and another otg cable. Even today when I used a Samsung otg cable to connect my note with a Samsung galaxy s2 via a Samsung USB cable, the otg features did not work, the s2 just said mtp and note said unknown device connected! So there are issues with this USB on the note.
I saw a youtube video for Galaxy S2 where he suspected that it was a malfunctioning USB dock. He replaced it and all the symptoms were gone. I'm really going full press on this and hopefully I can help myself and others who have similar problems. I've read up on USB problems the last 2 days from Galaxy Note users and Galaxy S2. They are very similar in design other than the screen/stylus.

Please keep us updated on your progress.
BTW to the folks having USB issues, are you having unusual battery drain? What other quirks have you encountered?
Has anyone compared the shape of the USB dock connector for Galaxy S, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note? I wonder if they are all the same shape and if I should try and look at replacing that part only? If it is the same then I will get this http://cnn.cn/shop/samsung-i9000-galaxy-microusb-connector-p-10745.html since it's cheap and I've got nothing to lose if it doesn't work.
Looks like we have a new design flaw here..so, how long does it take for you guys to experience this problem from date purchase your note?
Mine already 1 month purchase and not having this problem.

I fully agree that it is a hardware issue. Samsung should come up with an extra dongle or maybe a protection circuit integrated with the USB cable that should be used in conjunction with the SGNote. Otherwise, this issue will just keep on repeating and they will end up with a bunch of bricked units on their hands.
If only I didn't like the display on this device, I would have opted for a change item instead of a replacement unit.
I still have the rogue iPhone charger and when I use it to charge an iPhone it keeps on repeatedly bringing up the charging battery icon on and off but it doesn't destroy or brick the phone. But when I connected it to the SGNote, it bricked it. I did it on 2 units. And it will surely brick any other SGNote unit I connect this charger to. I'm willing to demo this to Samsung to prove the point of their weak USB interface circuitry.

Like you I got the Note for the screen size because I don't like to read in small screens. I haven't had a phone in 6 years!!!! I've seen phones come and go. The screen size of the Note made it comfortable enough to read anything (PDF, comics, web pages, ebooks).
How sure are you guys that it is indeed the USB circuitry and not just the metal dock? To be honest I'm not sure right now.

Oh my! Looking at the charger flex assembly pictures, all I see are a bunch of passive components for protection. I see no active components on this board that would likely be used for over-voltage or over-current protection. I'm not sure if it's on the main board though. But normally protection circuitry are placed right next to the connector for them to be effective. There seems to be a lot of space on the board for even a single-chip USB protection circuit but the space hasn't been utilized for such.
I'd be willing to bet you that your problems will still be the same even after replacement of this flex assembly.

For me, about 5 minutes after I plug-in the rogue iPhone charger... I did it twice... and luckily, since I still have warranty, I got both units replaced.
I strongly suggest for everybody not to use any other USB charger apart from the stock charger that came with the SGNote. Of course, this excludes plugging it into a PC or laptop as they should be fairly safe and well-protected (at least for name-brand units).
If you're going to use the stock charger, I would recommend plugging the USB cable in the charger and plugging-in the charger in the wall socket first BEFORE plugging-in the mini-USB connector to your SGNote. This minimizes the chances of having voltage spikes being transmitted through the USB connections into the SGNote, especially during the actual plugging of the charger to the wall socket. This is to be on the safe side in the case that the stock charger design is also flawed and doesn't prevent transients from reaching the load unit itself.
Is there a website or something from which we can call Samsung's attention on this matter? If indeed transients are the cause of the USB problems then all they need to do on the SGNote is to redesign the USB board assembly and stick it into units that have not been affected yet. This entails a product recall or as I mentioned in my previous post, maybe to offer us SGNote buyers a dongle or a USB cable with the protection circuitry.

Yup on the service manual and on the links to alibaba that you provided on your previous posts. I looked at both sides of the sub-assembly and only found passive components.
Well I'm using a 2 amp charger from ebay for charging downstairs; a HTC 1 amp charger in the bedroom; the 1 amp Samsung charger in work, but I also plug it into the 800 mah charger that also charges an extra battery in situ. ... she's till working fine.
Right now, usb mass storage or MTP is totally non-functional for me. I'm still glad USB charging is working. I hope that parts holds up till I get a replacement for it.
Thank goodness for wireless and FTP!

Does your charging change from AC to USB?

My nexus so far seems great but i have this issue and idk if its a defect or idk? When i go to charge my phone with the stock AC adapter and even a HTC adapter it starts charging on AC then sometimes switches to USB and charges slower. And I have to like plug it in and out a few times for it to finally catch as AC its super annoying and my GNex never had that issue. And when i want to use the phone on AC the Charge Drops significantly sometimes discharging and im not even doing anything intensive. Does anyone have this issue? Is it a problem with the USB cable maybe? Or do you think this is a defect? Because its about to be 14 days and i dont have much left to get an RMA cause its what im considering and if I need it i dont have 380 dollars in my bank account either if i do need it so idk how that would work. Any help would be appreciated Thanks!
It lowers the incoming current, by dropping to usb charge, to help keep the battery cooler. They seem to be really trying to keep the battery temp down on this thing.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.
Really? Do you know the temps? Or does anyone? Cause sometimes it changes to USB after plugging it in for like 5 mins and i wouldnt think it gets that hot that quick. And when i finally get the AC to seem to stick the temps go up to 30-35 degrees celcius as normal and im getting around 850mah and it doesn't drop to usb charging it just drops current sometimes mainly when im using it obviously. So idk if it really is what you say or maybe someone could elaborate more?
I just want to get to the bottom of this issue so to know if i need to get an RMA :/
I forgot to mention that it also seems to randomly switch between AC/USB/UNPLUGGED really fast sometimes and i have to unplug and replug to get a charge I have no idea why.. I really want to know if its a software issue or hardware. Thats my main concern.
Woww this makes sense Ive been trying to figure out why this freaking thing was taking so long to charge. this reminds me of the galaxy s and how long that thing took. hopefully this is a software bug and they can get this thing worked out

Yea idk if its a hardware or software bug im hoping software but i may just do an RMA incase if i can ill call google tommorow. And if you want to check how your phone is charging you can download Battery Monitor Widget it shows the mah and all that.
I have that same problem with the charger that came in the box.once it goes to USB it take forever to charge but when I use the charger from my gnex it stays on ac and charges really fast not once does it goes to USB.so I tried the N4 charger on my HTC thunderbolt and gnex and both would go into USB mode and charge really slow.

For what it's worth, my Nexus 4 *NEVER* charges in an AC mode using the OEM charging plug, regardless of which power point / cable I use with it. And to charge from 'critical' to 100% took about 7 hours last night. Wtf.
It's been RMA'd as I don't believe this to be correct behaviour. Perhaps also related, the USB computer connection has stopped working. It'll charge via USB but won't connect to any computer.

Hmm so did you use the Gnex charger like the USB cable and AC adapter? Cause ive just used the ac adapters with the N4 Lg USB cable. It makes me think that the USB cable is **** to. I need to find another USB to test this out.

Yep, tried a whole bunch of different power sockets, usb charger plugs and cables. Still screwed. The more I read, the more its obvious that the devices behaviour isn't correct.
You should send it back because mine charges fine. It takes 2-3 hours to charge mine to full from empty. I'm using the charger and USB cable that came with the phone.
I'm actually facing the same thing, I slept for 3 hours and woke up to my phone being only 60% charged. I tried plugging it in and out a couple of times, and now its back to AC and not switching to USB anymore.
In using Franco kernel and even enabling USB fast charge doesn't keep it from showing USB.

I was looking at my LG charger and it seems to be missing one of the gold connectors on the male part of the cable Idk if this is normal but my gnex has all the gold connectors.

Yea mine is missing it to I wonder if that is why? And i just got my RAVpower external battery and that usb has all the pins and i tried to charge my phone with the lg brick and the ravpower usb and it seems to charge fine goes to ac every time. So im really wondering if its the LG USB that i got and it being faulty or not. I need to get another USB to test this out. Cause i dont want to swap out an entire phone for just a usb..
I've noticed mine charges as USB when using the stock LG charger. I had put it down to the 3 metre USB cable it was attached to, but I guess it's just a pants charger.
I just started having the same problem since Sunday. Had the phone for 2wks now. I had the same problem with my gs2. I really don't like these adaptor charger now a days. I go for the straight wall charger. Seems to work best. I think it's better because it doesn't convert to a usb cord as well, I don't know but I went ahead and ordered this one. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=150959459340 should be here Friday. it says original OEM charger for E960 nexus 4. We'll see.. I suggest direct wall charger instead of those USB adaptor that come with phones now.
I just looked at my USB charger from lg, it has 4 gold pins. Seems like they're all there, how many are there suppose to be??

Unable to charge!

I just starting having this issue last night...out of nowhere while the phone was plugged in, it said "Unable to charge. Use the original charger."
The odd thing is it actually charges a little in between the messages popping up, so it makes no sense...it's an obvious contradiction. lol I did a reboot but that didn't fix it. I'm using the oem charger.
This morning it happened a few more times but after unplugging and plugging back in quite a few times, it seems to have stopped - it appears to be charging normally (for now), but I'm still concerned!
Any suggestions/ideas?

I've seen it happen now and then on my phone. Usually it just means the charger isn't very well suited. This happened when I was using the charger for an MSI Tablet that my wife uses and keeps plugged in in the living room. It does charge very very slowly.
On another note, I actually had the phone tell me last night while I was outside that the battery was too cold and that it couldn't charge while hooked up to my external battery pack.....now THAT was funny.
Were you using the original charger the whole time? If so your USB port might be going bad?? I had to replace mine on my Galaxy Nexus which was a Samsung.

Hey, yeah the same charger the whole time. This is very odd because now it's not doing it anymore. I just got the phone a few months ago so I can't imagine it's the USB port...that would be ridiculous!

Hey buddy I have the same issue. I am not sure if it is the USB 3.0 High Speed port. But what I did was use a stand micro USB cable with the original charger and it works. I am going to ask for a warranty exchange here shortly. But I suggest you try that.

True, that would be odd. I got mine just a week or so ago and it charges fine with the original 3.0 charger and my old 2.0 ones from my galaxy nexus. I'd just keep an eye on it and if it keeps happening, it may be worth getting a warranty replacement.

Hey man, it's funny that you say that because if it continued to not work that was the next thing I was gonna try (standard usb cable) thanks for letting me know I'm not alone here! It's kind of ridiculous that a two month old phone would have these sort of issues, especially at this price range...it's pretty much inexcusable.
If it continues to happen I'll be trying for the warranty exchange as well!
Thanks!

I'm having a severe case of this issue on my Note3.
No matter what charger cable I use (including 3.0 OEM), w an OEM base or not, no cable will charge and always gives me the "Use original charger" statement. The only way to currentlly power my device is via Qi Wireless or swap batteries.
I'm not sure what may have caused this.
The only big difference with my usage is I recently bought Anker batteries for swapping the OEM battery. But I've put my OEM back in and Im still getting this issue.
Dont kno if there's any relation but LG Qi Pad use to charge through the Seidio Dilex just fine, but now I have to take the case off. Qi Wireless charging still works fine on my Lugulake with the Dilex on though. Difference between then and now is I added a Skinomi on my back cover (excessive, i kno, for those occasional days when I want to go bare).
EDIT
my PC doesnt seem to detect my NOTE3 as a storage drive either when plugged in. Ugh, i may have a busted port. I wonder if I may have damaged it when installing my Skinomi. The adhesive requires heat to activate so I had plastic wrapped my phone and wrapped a hot towel around it to help thhe curves stick down (no it wasnt plugged in at the time)
other details, likely irrelevant, is I recently added a 64GB SDXC the device that previously didnt have external Storage.

I have this issue with my Note 3 as well it will charge with 2.0 but I get error message with 3.0 I called verizon first time after saying they would replace it they sent a 12" usb 2.0 cable which they charged $20 for I called back second rep stated she knew what i meant and she would sent the correct one out right away and of course remove the charge The sent a 3' usb cable with a led on it so i call back a third time and was advised they do not have usb 3.0 in stock and internal documents instruct them to transfer to Samgsung I call samsung and they rep tells me nope we don't have usb 3.0 either and that their documentation advises that they ship usb 2.0 I know this may seem petty but I paid $600 for this phone and I want to use usb 3.0 and it should be functioning oh yeah charging phone with cable with usb 2.0 that i had from my note 2 and now I see never carrier or manufacturer really care since they have my money and 2yr commitment

Try a different USB power source (charger). They should be available worldwide.
