[INFO/Q] Root, Updates and Rom situation

Hi,
I am checking the updates on the root scene for transformer but I realized that there are some things I cannot understand well so I'm gonna ask you to help me:
ROOT & UPDATE
- There is an update that should be the one avaiable since 26rd...can I update without risking that I won't be able to root? Also because there will be another one on 28th... (or the one I see is already the one that was suppposed to be out 28...)
I am asking this because of this two post:

ROM
- If I want to root I guess, by now, the only way is the Paul's way but anyway after that...which rom is actually the best & most updated? The one avaiable are:
27 Apr Hr3: MoDaCo Custom ROM for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (based on the 23/04 update )
ROM] PRIME! v1.0 | Fast | Rooted | Deodexed (based on the 23/04 update )
[ROM] Ti-X Transformation V1.2 deodexed (dunno what's based on)

ROOT & UPDATE
Just take two steps back from anything flashable thats coming directly from ASUS.
There are versions of the OTAs with the bad parts stripped out.
US users are currently unable to gain root with the available method, as far as I know this is because of a differing/updated firmware on the US devices. The "new root" which is sheduled for 30 April is primarily helping those US users and anyone who applied one of the OTAs from Asus.
ROMS
Hr3 is based on the 230411 update and got some (minor? havent tested yet) improvements from Paul.
Prime is based on the deodexed "vanilla" ROM which was posted some days ago, together with the improvements from all updates including 230411.
Ti-X is based on the same deodexed vanilla as Prime, but isnt updated with the 230411 improvements AFAIK.
Basically, you're getting pretty much the same on the first two ROMs, Prime has the Spare Parts apps included and is deodexed (lots of threads about that, long story short: if you dont want to theme or mod parts of the ROM you don't need this).

I'm European user (Italy) and everyone claim that the OTAs by Asus are really good and the Tablet is quite faster!
The point anyway is...if I update then...can I root ?

If you don't need root this minute, then feel free to update. We have a root method for the current OTAs which will regain root. We'll release details shortly (including a proper clockworkmod recovery and an insecure boot)

Then I'll update and wait for the root when this new method is released.

In my about it says based on system dumb of the 4/14/11 ota fir the Ti-X rom all u need to do is read a little.
And deodex is more then just themes and moding apps it helps the dev when making fixes to the rom. Modaco will b deodexed soon most likely also.

Yeah well, I guess if he asks for advice which rom to flash he isn't going to apply any fixes to the rom (yet).

The fixes are for the dev not on the end user side.

Spare parts is an actual app that has additional system settings that are not originally in the stock settings menu

[Q] Recovery.img or full backup Acer_A500_1.016.01_COM_GEN1 please

Can anybody please share the recovery.img or full backup for Acer_A500_1.016.01_COM_GEN1 (I suspect this was my original version) or
Acer_A500_1.139.02_COM_GEN1 (my firmware after the latest update)
Please specify which version you provide.
Check your versiom in About tablet > Build number.
Your help would be really appreciated

It should be in micro sd/clockwork mod/[backup date]/recovery.img
You can put it on the root of the micro sd and acer recovery installer will pick it up.
But, does anybody know where acer recovery installer creates the backup of the original recovery.img when flashing clockwork mod?

my last backup is 1.141.05_COM_GEN1 with original recovery , boot , system and flexrom I can upload it but why do you what to go back to that ugly slow rom?
when 3.1 official comes it can easily converted for cwm...

This is awkward, my latest OTA update is Acer_A500_1.139.02_COM_GEN1 and System update claims it's the latest.
I don't want to go back but I want to know I can have the tablet back to stock with default OTA working.
When I started playing with CWM on my galaxy S, naturally I went custom without asking any questions - carrier updates will always blow.
But the latest leaks from samsung are so good I don't bother with custom roms anymore.
Since iconia is not branded I believe in due time the default experience will be great.
So when that time comes or if I'll sell it I want the software to be like new.

whell your problem is 139.02... havent seen an update from that version... even on mine I was stuck at 1.139.05 and downloaded update from here

what's the last version depends on the country it seams...

Wouldn't it be good to maybe upload this for people who didn't backup and read the steps when installing custom roms just an idea

do the full package:

then do the update:

I have the Acer Iconia A500 tablet... a while ago, I rooted it and I am now running a rom... here are my current settings

for some reason this morning it wanted me to update my system but the update failed... when I rooted I deleted 3 of the stupid games that came with it. I am still able to boot into recovery the manual way but the tablet is not allowing me to use acer recovery app and busybox will not work either. its like I seemed to have lost root rights for some reason?
what I want to do get my tablet back to stock and exept the current update to 3.2. at this point I really don't care about re-rooting it. I just want to be able to get the update.... CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS.

alright dude let me get this straight you have recovery access which is but do you want your rom to be a 3.2 rom or a 3.1 rom in my opinion if you want just a full on stock rom 3.2 w/ su access and root "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265847" ive used it before and it works great.
if you want a 3.2 full stock no su nothing and this also means you cant reroot you can try this one

the reason you get this issue is because the tablet is rooted and the original recovery partition is no longer there its custom , and most custom roms always have updates coming out when they notice something has updated on a rom they made. but its because you dont the original android recovery image to update with.

Custom HV kernel as well. I'm seeing this happen a lot with ppl running stock ROMs and custom kernels.
While it's common sense to most, apparently some just don't get it.
BTW, this thread should be in Q & A, not in development.

[ROM][Stock 3.2]][CWM][7310UEKJ5][rooted + busybox] P7310 WiFi only

HC 3.2 P7310 P7310XAR P7310UEKJ5
Here is a stock 3.2 ROM for P7310 (WiFi) that I built from a system.img and boot.img from P7310XXKJ4(thanks nirogu325!). This is good for folks that like stock and can't flash with ODIN and for ROM bases\components etc.
CWM Recovery flashable (system and stock kernel included)
Install wipe caches, dalvik cache, and replaces the system partition. It will not touch /data unless you do so in CWM (see install below).
Deodexed
Zipaligned
Rooted + busybox
Removed the plethora of annoying widgets from the home screens that came from the factory.
Removed some DOA 0 byte APKs (AndroidTabletGNA_v1.apk, BoxAndroidApp.apk, WeatherBugTablet.apk, and SamsungHelpCenter_P7310_v001.apk)
Works great with my v2 kernel for HC 3.2 If you had my kernel already, you need to reflash it after flashing this zip since it contains the stock kernel.
Note: This ROM is deodexed. It will boot slow the first time and apps will load slower the first time you use them. It will then get faster, so give it a chance.

Backup:
Backup your existing ROM with CWM first.
Install Fresh:
Wipe data\factory reset from CWM recovery and flash the zip. When it boots, it will start the setup wizard like you just bought it.
Upgrade:
If you have stock 3.2 KJ4, you may be able to get way with just a flash without wiping data. It seems to be working OK for me. If you have any issues, I recommend installing fresh. This worked great for me as well.
As-is...I will provide no support for this stock ROM.

Overcome CWM Recovery - Nandroid Backup procedure: Go to the CWM Recovery > Nandroid menu > Backup or Restore. This ROM is already rooted if that was your last question.

Curious little typo Samsung made in the MTP Application, when you connect it says "MTP initialisation" instead of initialization. This is also present on the previous KJ4.

Lol yeah. It was with a "z" in KHA. So far this firmware's quicker than KHA. Got it OC'ed (with your kernel) up to 1.4 and UV'ed -75 only the higher freqs. All is well.

This firmware was leaked by samfirmware.com (soon to be sammobile.com). It is a stock ROM as the title says, but it is a leak (as in let's say a beta firmware), a stable one as I've had it installed since the 3rd of this month. If you'd rather wait for an OTA then you're welcome, it's all your choice. Be sure to follow instructions and you'll be fine with no bootloops. Don't be afraid to ask if help is needed.

So..XAR = EU and KHA=US I assume?
I think I read on overcome thread, saying there is no hardware difference between regions...just localized apps....which means ROMs are interchangeable?

US region is XAB me thinks. Oh and it doesn't matter which region you choose since you can choose your preferred language at the startup wizard.

Sorry, this is just a stock Wifi-only ROM that is prepped for CWM flashing. nirogu325 pointed you in the right direction for the equivalent stock ROM for the 7300 (3G), but you have to use ODIN to flash.
The 3G folks really need someone to do some CWM conversions for the stock 7300 ROMs so you don't have to use ODIN all the time. ODIN is great for low level recovery when all else fails, but it really sucks for day to day use as well as for avid ROM flashers since you have to re-root and re-install recovery etc. If you do go through all these things, at least make sure you do a CWM backup so you have a quick way to flash back to stock next time.

When you say stock do you mean no TouchWiz or stock as in just a rooted/deodexed version of the standard Samsung ROM? I'm looking for a plain Honeycomb 3.2 ROM. I'm downloading this anyway but if someone responds before it'll save me a bit of time Thanks!

There are no 8.9 ROMs that lack TouchWiz yet. If you want lag out, change launchers. I suggest ADWLauncher EX due to its new hardware acceleration functions in tablets.

Yeah I've been using ADW and its great. It's just a few little things with TouchWiz that I don't like... I want a stock (black) launcher bar on the bottom and black system menu & browser.

NOTE: I only have the 7310 (Wi-Fi) unit so this is not tested for the 7300 KJ5.
I can help you out with the bar and toggle menu, but not the browser and Settings, I'm afraid. Here's a CWM flashable I made with images from the old Overcome 1.2 ROM and a revert just in case.

3.2 ROM issue with IMAP email client
Hey all,
I flashed this ROM and it works great with one exception. I use IMAP email which was working fine in 3.1 and works fine now with a 3rd party email client but with the mail app in this ROM all IMAP folders are empty. Sending emails through smtp okay but syncing IMAP results in only retrieving folders but all empty.
Any help or alternative is welcome, I don't want to go back but my only option is now POP or 3rd party IMAP app (which I don't like - they are all for lower phone resolution).

I know there is a lot of comments about why root nexus 4. The reason for me is that I know there is a lot of small fixes which i can install (battery kernel... I think i can install just to rooted phpne) but for me the main thing is that I know in time I will get very lazy about installing new roms. I have htc desire and last time i installed new rom year ago. The same with my xoom.
So my question is, if i root my phone, will i be abble to update original rom just by going to settings-about-update? It doesnt work on my desire and xoom. But i installed unoficial roms there. But if i just want to unlock the phone for little fixes and still be able to get updates from google... Is that possible?

I believe that OTA updates just flash the stock kernel again, so you could unlock, root and flash a different kernel without fear of losing OTA updates. However, OTA updates will force you to lose root and you will have to flash the custom kernel again. You will continue to get notifications that say that there is a new update as long as you aren't also on a custom ROM

If you are running the stock ROM you will still get and ota notification. However if you've made any modifications such as a custom kernel, build.prop edit, system.ui edit, etc. The ota will fail upon installation.
If all you do is get root access it will install fine. You'll just have to flash the su binaries again.

Actually, SU has a survival mode that will preserve root even after OTA. CWM will also protect ropt so you don't have to reroot it. My Nexus 7 has been stock rooted and went thru 2 OTAs without losing root.

Sorry to hijack,
My question is, I am rooted with stock rom but have CWR and a different kernel.
When the next OTA comes, I would need to download the whole rom because of CWR and kernel.
Question I have is that if I want to flash the OTA, would I need to wipe my device or can I just flash the ROM ontop. I know my old device (DHD) I had to wipe everything before I install the ROM. The reason why I am asking is because can I get away with just flashing on top therefore keeping all my data on my device so I no need to restore it via titanium backup (I am lazy)
