Delayed Notifications on Wifi? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else been experiencing delayed notifications while on wifi with screen off? I've tried disabling the new wifi optimization setting in 4.2, made sure that wifi is set to stay on during sleep, and it doesn't seem to help much. I've also noticed that if I sent a text via MightyText on my PC a lot of the time the message doesn't reach the phone until I wake it up.

Ah, so is that why my phone is delayed with fb messages..

Maybe, do you notice this issue while on wifi? Try disabling wifi and see if the notifications come up right away after that.

Email Notification

I now have the push email up and running but I can't seem to get my device to wakeup when I have new mail. I have to keep turning it on to see if I got new mail or not. This can be very annoying. Is there any way around this?
I have looked in notifications and under "new email message" I have it selected to display on screen and vibrate. What else do I need to change?
Hi DanITman,
I've got the same problem here.
With my HP6340 this works perfectly so when I bought the wizard I expected the same, but not.
Seems to me that active sync can’t wake up the wizard even if you change the registry to wake up WLAN after standby.
So if there is someone else who could help as that would be much appreciated.

I have no problem getting mail while in sleep mode. I just want it to notify me when I do receive mail by waking up and vibrating. Or stay in sleep mode and just vibrate. I would be happy with that. I just think that the push email is useless unless I get notified when an email comes in so I can respond promtly. I'm glad to see others are having the same problem and hopefully a fix will come out soon.
So if I understand you correctly your device can receive e-mail when it's in standby?
Do you use GPRS or WLAN for push e-mail?
I think you might have checked notification under sounds in the settings screen?

I use GPRS/EDGE for all of my email. ActiveSync works fine in sleep mode. However, when mail does arrive I don't know it until I turn my device back on manually, making the whole push email thing useless because i still have to check to see if I have received new mail or not. Under notifications I have it set to vibrate and show on screen when new email arrives (which it does) but only if its not in sleep mode or once I turn the device on manually it will begin to vibrate to tell me new mail has arrived.
Sorry can't help you with this one mate.
But you’re right, why no notification when your device is in standby.
Seems to me that there is no difference i notification between receiving an SMS or E-mail when you use push e-mail.
Maybe a bug in the test rom?
We will se when there is an official one.
Same issue here. Was never an issue using the old psuedo-push sms system with the old ROM.
Anybody know what the effect of never going into full standby mode would be on the battery? In other words, the screen backlight off but never in standby?

I have never been able to get this to work even when I had ActiveSync set to sync every 5 minutes with the old ROM. It wasn't a problem if you used the old SMS push system because the sms would wake the device up. I was hopeing it was my fault and I was missing a setting but it seems its happening to everyone. Its a pain in the ass.
I did some testing and found out that I can get it to play a sound in standby mode when I have a new email but it won't vibrate. Since my device is only syncing when told too by the server I am going to see if I can get it to vibrate at the end of an activesync and that could possible work.
Setting ActiveSync to vibrate after its finished doesn't work either. Even when the device is on
I was hoping that the "Wake Up to Full Power Mode" tweak in Tweaks2k2 might solve this one, but alas no go. Bummer.

Thanks for trying that. I think MS needs to get this figured out if they want these devices to be BlackBerry killers. Push email is useless if I don't know that I have email the minute it comes in.
this may not help, but it's worth a try......
i put my Wizard (with the new Rom) into a car cradle which is always powered..........therefore the unit is always on.........if the current program on screen is Inbox, then new email coming in does not sound the notification sound.......
if Inbox is running in the background or not at all, then i get the notification sound.......
so........ i tried at home both methods and even when switched off, Inbox needs to be running in the background and not the current program for the sound to notify in an off/standby state
but........ i do get sound notification in standby as long as it is running in the background (ie, when you switch it on, Today screen or Phone or any other app is the 1st thing that greets you)
i regularly get the sound going off through the evening whilst in standby mode....
I know it doesn't solve you problem, but Goodlink got it right.
I will get sound and vib while the unit is in stand-by.
you would thing MS would be able to do the same...
I assume its a glitch that will be fixed soon. Does anyone know where in the registry notifications are kept? I would like to do some searching to see what I can find.
Same problem...
I have the very same problem. Had it before the AKU2 ROM and still have it now. I have taken to using MortSaver and never putting the device in standby...battery doesn't seem affected. Still, rather have this working like it's supposed to out of the box...hope someone can find a solution!

Thanks. I am going to try this -- do you know if the program, which I assume is running in the background all the time, has any impact on device performance?
I have the Cingular 8125 and I love it, but I also have the same problem. I have Goodlink installed and if my device is sleeping it will not vibrate when emails come in. It will make the sound but no vibration. I am currently using Mortsaver for now to keep the device running with the screen off, so that I can feel the vibration and know that I have received an email.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Can anyone verify if this has been fixed in the new Kjam ROM. I don't want to upgrade until this gets fixed. The qtek test ROM is working really well.

I still can't believe that MS has screwed this seemingly fundamental feature up.
In any event, the workaround I am trying at the moment involves the new version of AEPButtons plus. Using this program, I set a double click PIE button action to turn the screen off. In settings, I have unchecked the "Turn Device off after" button so the device never goes to sleep. When I holster or put down my K-jam, I double click the PIE button to turn off the screen and save battery life/prevent accidental key presses. Since the device never truly goes to sleep, the email notifications still come and I get the vibrate telling me an email has arrived. At night or when I don't want notifications, I press the power button. It's not a perfect solution, but it seems to work OK and I don't seem to be missing as many emails coming in.

[Q] Problem with the Note's Email application?

Hi guys, I have setup my corporate Exchange mailbox using the built in application.
However, it works VERY poorly (settings set to Push) - sometimes the widget (or alerts for that matter) wont display new mail for HOURS! Until I manually go into the Mail application, and a minute later suddenly I get all the emails, and 4 emails I've been trying to 'share' (Notes) have been all sent at once.
Any idea how to fix this? or what to use instead?
On my old Dell Streak, using the default program, I had instant alerts on emails! sometimes even before Outlook had a popup!
this is annoying to no end..
I'm not sure if you're organization sets device security, but mine required a passcode to be set on my device if I used my Exchange account. For whatever reason I was still able to use the pattern lock but I noticed the same delays that you did. On a whim I set it to a numeric lock and all of a sudden my mail decided to push properly.

ok well, I tried this - 10 mins ago someone sent email (I see it on outlook already) - yet nothing on the Note (I switched to numeric lock hours ago), so must be something else... any ideas?
wifi is connected, and gmail is getting updates without issues.
I have this problem, too, and I've seen several others post about it as well. It's quite frustrating. Sometimes it works instantly and sometimes it'll go a couple hours without sending/receiving. Some people think it's a push bug and say changing to polling fixes it, but it didn't for me. I set it to 15 minutes and I still get the same problem with delays. It's really frustrating. I'm going to see if it's an app issue by installing another email client such as K9 or Touchdown.
Also, I wonder if it's a connectivity problem; I've been having weird issues; I work from home a lot so I'm here a lot in my wifi, and it seems sometimes my phone won't use the cellular network. I turn my phone off, it goes into deep sleep and turns wifi off, then I won't get any emails until something else wakes my phone, turning wifi back on. Like the email client can't or won't wake the phone when needed. I'm going to start a post about this tomorrow.

My wifi also disconnects sometimes if the phone is idle I don't know why.
That happens at home, it does not switch to 3G as I don't have any 3G plan atm at all (and its disabled in settings anyway).
However the mail push issue is prevalent even when I use the phone and its active - mails still don't arrive! even if I click refresh on the widget itself, no new mails until I launch the Mail application!
Ok well, this has gotten worse.
My limit is when I show up for a meeting only to find out 15 mins ago a postpone email was sent.
I've mailed Samsung support, hopefully will get an answer to resolve the issue - will update when I hear something back.
Anyone else experiences the same problem? please post here...
Also anyone who solved it
I had the same issue as well,So i deleted my Exchange account started all over again from scratch,on the set up i chose all the options I needed, now it works as it should,so what I have noticed:
1-After the setup is complete,if you go to the Account Settings and start to fiddle with the settings that seems to upset the push funtion ,except changing the notification sound didnt do any harm.
2-When I assign my custom Notification tone it also seems to upset the Push funtionality(but I am not 100% sure of this one yet.)

Cyanogenmod and push notifications (aka Whatsapp delays v2)

So I've been having problems with push notifications (whatsapp, gmail) for a looong time now and it really pisses me off like f&*k. I mean, if I want an "instant" messenger, I don't want to receive my messages after 2 hours or when I wake my phone up, right ?
I switched ROMs countless times, same thing with kernels and all I can say is that the push notifications work perfectly ONLY on stock kernel+ROM (as from my experience). But what if I don't want to stay on 2.1 and receive my messages instantly ?
I've done some research on google for CM and push notifications and it appears that I'm not the only one having this problem. People say that there's an issue with mobile internet connection (I don't experience problems on WiFi) and it feels like it "refreshes" from time to time instead of staying connected. So what's the case here ? I'm desperate to have it fixed, but after weeks of research, all I found is that people on stock ROMs don't experience this s#it...
In many roms, To save battery the internet connection refreshes, so u just have to remove that setting, Ask it to the developer of the respective rom how to do it

Thank you for your answer. I hope it helps with my push notifications issue, because I get this with literally every messanger (Whatsapp, Talk, Viber, GMail). Screw the battery life, I want to stay connected instead of getting a 2 hour delay between messages
I never have this issue :/ you sure that android is not killing them because of low memory etc

Lots of ROMs, lots of kernels, no task killer, no additional apps and it still disconnects after 5 minutes of the phone being idle. Then when I wake the phone up and go to Whatsapp for example, it takes a while to connect again (nothing shows in place of "Last seen"). In some cases I need to manually turn data transfer off and on again to make it work. Same with Viber, Google Talk, GMail. I eventually receive my messages after some random amount of time. Sometimes it's 5 minute delay, sometimes it's 2 hours.
Download trillian and ur good to go. In settings click keep WiFi activ and no prop no more.

I think you missunderstood me
I have no problems on WiFi. I have problems with push notifications in general. My data transfer won't stay connected full-time. It goes to sleep after I stop using my phone for a while, then it reconnects when I wake the phone up (sometimes I have to reconnect it manually), so the problem isn't with certain application, but with the phone in general.
Best regards
Solution
cyanogenmod turns off wi-fi when the phone is idle so you should download an app for that from the play store, like advanced wi-fi lock for example, to be able to keep it on. Hope i helped
But anyways i think that if the signal is low and the phone disconnects from the wireless network it wont connect again, so you will have to connect it manually again.
I just changed my provider to T-Mobile and it seems like the problem is gone. Why ? I don't know. I hope it's not just temporary and I won't come back here in a few days, complaining even more.
Regards
Yep, almost 2 days and it's working like a charm. If you have any problems with push notifications on CM, it's probably your provider screwing you over
Mod please close the thread
I don think its provider's problem. Why will they block the push notification?
I started experiencing this when I moved over to ICS.
hmm I don't know about ICS but on CM7 I don't have that problem. I have gmail, hotmail, whatsapp and viber apps, all with push notifications working fine... don't know why push notifications wouldn't work on ICS, in my opinion it's your providers fault if you try to push notifications using 3g or 2g data and they came delayed.
ps: I'm using miniCM7.
[edit: uh.. wrong threat]
is there a way of getting push notifications without google-apps?

Delayed Notifications

It's really annoying to get a message and be notified minutes after. I don't really care for email notifications because most of them are not urgent, but I also use WhatsApp and yesterday I received a notification 1 HOUR after the person sent it to me. It's crazy. I think it has something to do with google talk? The delay is in both WiFi and 3g/hspa. Does anyone have the same issue? Or know how to fix this? Thanks
bump
Same here.
The problem is not the notifications themselves, it's something about the data and the phone.
Gmail does not get the email pushed. When it does, the notification goes off immediately.
But the new email can take as long as 20-30 minutes to get to the phone.
Same about whatsapp, FB... everything that has to do with data.
I tried on wifi and 3G - same behavior, meaning, it is not related to the wifi-when-screen-is-off thread or any change to the QOS in the router, as suggested in other threads I've found.
I am sure I am not the only one to experience this.
Not sure if this is a Nexus 4 or an Android 4.2.1 issue.
Who else has this prob?
Any ideas as to what we can try to do to get to the bottom of this?

Severe delay in all kinds of notification on my Nexus 6P until I wake up phone screen

So I am seeing this issue increasing on daily basis. My phone is usually in my pocked (not in doze) or some times lying around on the desk (dozed/not dozed, but still notification should deliver late). But I have noticed that in both situations, I don't receive any notification until I actually turn on the screen. As soon as I turn the screen on, notifications start to come in all together.. (around 4-5 notification comes together). It seems that they were pending to be delivered but were never delivered to the device until I woke it up and data connection restored.
I understand that in doze mode, notifications are delayed but are delivered, but in my situation they are not even delivered until I turn on the screen and wait a couple to 5 seconds.
A few P.S.
- I am on Stock Android without anykind of root (systemless or regular).
- I don't have any kind of advanced battery saving mode on or app installed (greenify or clean master etc).
- I don't have battery optimization for whatsapp still no notification comes in :crying:
- I see it on both Wifi and LTE..
- Cellular notifications like sms, mms or calls are not affected with this issue, they come on time.

The thread doesn't just cover gmail. If you look past the title, they are working on fixing issues relating to push notifications in general. Gmail was just the first app reported as having issues. Push notifications currently aren't functioning correctly on the 6P. Google is working to fix the issue. If you actually google notifications not showing up on 6P, quite a few news articles and Android forums will give you the same answer I was trying to give you.
I only experience this when I turn my phone on first thing in the morning, otherwise no.
I have notification issues on almost every Android phone, when on WiFi. It seems to be a known issue but been around/unresolved forever.
I use an app called DNSet, it runs automatically at startup and fixes this issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, i'll try it myself.. and report back.
Right now I am using Push Notification Fixer and results are really mixed. It works sometimes and others are as bad as no notification for minutes or hours until screen is turned on.
Please update following defect at google bug tracker stating you are also experiencing this issue.

Well, also if I have another phone (an Xperia) with Nougat 7.1.1 I have the same issue, which I also faced on older version of Android (eg on a Wiko Rainbow Jam with Lollipop)
I'm doing some tests in the generic section of the forum:

I know you said it's happening on both LTE and Wi-Fi, but many people look past their carrier / geographic location as the culprit. Please update your XDA profile with that information. Everyone should have this most basic information in their profile. Thanks.
