Given the Bluetooth and WiFi issues with 4.2 , I would like to flash 4.1 for a while. Is this possible?

Probably depends greatly on what proprietary binaries are available and their compatibility. Google does say that they're 4.2 only, but technically, they "might" work on 4.1, but in any case, a AOSP ROM built from 4.1 would have to be done anyway.
There was talk of a Debug ROM, but I think it might of been running ICS.
Could you elaborate your wifi and bt issues?? I have no problems with wifi and it is weirdly even better than my laptop (which is quite good)... bt seems to work fine for me but I don't have any bluetooth peripherals....

Craig,
It's as though the WiFi radios randomly turn off then on. I will go a day without a problem then have issues every 5 minutes the next day. This seems to be ongoing (see my thread "WiFi stability issues") with other folks. It happens across all my Nexus devices on 4.2.
I'm running your ROM right now on my N10

Hey craig, can you share your wifi setup? My Nexus 10's range is pretty poor when connected to my Airport Extreme, which is 2.4 ghz N. It performs about on-par with my original Kindle Fire, and quite a bit behind my 2006 HP laptop. A new 5ghz router is on the way, we'll see if that helps.
i had issues with 5GHz, switched to 2.4ghz and thats the only problems ive had with wifi and bt.
I have a MediaLink 2.4GHz B/G/N wireless router (not my choice, cuz I rent a room here!!)... configured as N... WPA2-Personal... I live on the floor above the router... not in any clear line of sight... laptop & Galaxy Nexus show signal strength 3/4... Nexus 10 shows 4/4... and my speeds are mostly better on my Nexus 10...
Regarding bluetooth, if you are having issues you didn't have on 4.1.x, it could be because the bluetooth stack has been changed from bluez to bluedroid in 4.2....

I have had my TF for six weeks now and I have to say that my experience with the wifi connection is awful. My eeepc picks up loads of signals that the TF does not see and I have lots of connection problems when I travel. I have read that this is to do with USA channel restrictions which if true is bulls**t as i bought the TF in the UK and travel in Europe! For a non three G tablet wifi is essential.
Is there anything that can improve the wifi performance?
Actually I am finding it seems to beat my iphone, ipods, iPad, and my wife's Dell laptop. Saying that because when I sat in the living room with my iDevices I pretty much couldn't connect to the router all the way across the house period, it would connect but basically be worthless. My wife's laptop is almost hte same, she gets crappy speeds in the living room. I find that my Transformer shows like a 65% signal in the living room and I get great speeds. My Playbook while I had it for 2 weeks also was noticabely better at connecting to my router and speed from the living room.
My gut says to get ahold of another TF and try it. You may have a defective unit.
I've had no problems with wifi on mine. Admittedly, I am in the US.

hmmm. i have to say the wifi on my TF is much better than on my laptop and on my phone. Maybe you have a dodgy unit
Actually the Wifi on my TF is has a better range then my notebook which has a intel 5300. My router is sitting downstairs in the living room, and I am able to stream (Plex) to my bedroom which is one floor above.

I agree.
I had the GTab, the Archos, the Elocity A7, twice the Nook Color, plus the MyTouch and Samsung Galaxy S phones... and my TF has the best wifi connectivity of them all.
It connects quickly and stays connected. Today, in fact, I had to go to a local hospital and the TF connected automatically to the hospital's open wifi without my intervention.
mine is nearly flawless, but remember your not gonna see 5ghz signals because the TF is 2.4 only
My router is on the second floor of my house & I have no issues in my basement.
I'll be traveling next week so it might be a different story in a hotel.
agreed my TF is far better than my htc phone in wifi connectivity
Mine is good enough, but I did notice a bit of a dropoff in signal strength from the wifi driver in 3.0 to the driver in 3.1.

The TF seems to favor some router channels over others. Try changing channels ( take it off auto).
My wifi actually worked very well on STOCK but now that i am on custom rom, it is much worse...
Before, i got very high signal from my router but it is not more the case.. I am waiting for on update of the wifi version....
It is not just your Tablet. No need to RMA at all.
The radio in the Transformer is just not that good.

My experience with custom ROMs is from mixed to poor... something always breaks. I would go back to stock.
Since updating to HC 3.1, my wifi has been horrible. Actually, it seems to get worse after every update that asus has pushed. It's not really an issue at home but when I'm at work and I can't move closer to the router, it's a problem.
It used to be TF 3.0 >> iphone 3gs > dell mini 9hackintosh with Leopard OS
now, Dell mini 9 snow leopard > iphone >>TF 3.1
I haven't had any issues with reception. It had a weird connection issue when trying to access my friend's tethering (unrooted, he pays Sprint for it). But I think it was actually the software one one end or the other, not the actual device.
I have a UK TF too and my wifi works brilliantly.
So far i have used it in UK, Germany, Switzerland and Czech and haven't had any troubles.
I set the router to channel 13, and my HTC Desired picked it right up, but the Transformer didn't. I then reduced it to channel 12, still no luck - then i reduced it to 11 and then the Transformer could see it.
Use the 'WiFi Analyser' app to check out the best wifi channels available in your area and to ensure that you aren't using overlapping channels from other equipment and neighbouring signals.
You'll be surprised when you see that the 'auto' selecting wifi hardware will almost always select the same channels which just get overloaded with interference.
I have recently bought a Nexus 7 and discovered that it appears to have problems with its bluetooth connectivity. I often use my Big Jambox to play music over bluetooth from my laptop and smartphone such as Spotify and had zeros issues. However, when using my Nexus 7 with the Jambox it intermittently cuts out on a regular basis, no matter the distance, location, or presence of other interfering bluetooth signals. I originally thought this only happened when the screen turned off on the Nexus 7 but it actually happens all the time.Is the Nexus 7 known for a 'weak' bluetooth, is my specific one likely to be faulty? Has anyone else had any similar issues? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers.
Edit: I have exchanged the Jambox thinking the issue may have been that. However, the issue still persists with the new one.
Can you describe the "cutout" in greater detail?
Edit:
Just played a 9 minute song with the Nexus in one room and the iHome speaker in another room (50 feet or so).
At the 8 minute mark there was a small instantaneous snap sound. That was all. Overall I feel its very good.
I've been using mine with a Bluetooth receiver hooked up to my home stereo and it's working fine.
No issues with my Bose soundlink, or HTC stereclip I've been paired with.

Are those with working A2DP audio, playing content over WiFi or stuff you've previously downloaded to your N7? I seem only to get problems when WiFi is pumping data. Maybe the current implementation doesn't let Bluetooth and WiFi play nice together?
I, too, have the same problem.
Are you connected to any other Bluetooth connection at the same time? This is the only time I ever have a problem when streaming in the car.
Exchanged my Nexus 7 and the new one works flawlessly. Original must have been faulty.

Hmm, I'm wondering if there is an issue with my nexus 7. I've been complaining on another thread about getting bluetooth mic's working. But I noticed the last few days when I'm at work (I work in a busy downtown core) in certain areas I always get skips/stops in the music. Like it always happens in the same spot. There's one corner near my work that as soon as I approach it I know I'm going to get skips.
I thought maybe it's how I'm holding it, but near my home I can walk with it in either hand, almost swinging it back and forth and I cannot make a skip. But every morning/night going to/from work I can guarantee I'll get skips. This is with wifi off and bluetooth not looking for other devices.
I know bluetooth and wifi share some of the same range, even though I have wifi off, in the area I'm at there are numerous wifi hotspots and providers blanketing the downtown core with accessible wifi. Could this cause an interference issue or do I have a bad device? Besides bluetooth issues my device is flawless and counted myself as one of the lucky ones.
I wanted to get some community feedback on the Bluetooth drivers for this phone.
I've noticed several times that my jawbone icon will "cut out" for 5 to 10 seconds periodically. Doesn't seem to happen at any consistent interval with no consistent trigger. I've tested the same headset with a nexus s, and a blackberry bold 9300. It works fine with the other 2 phones.
I've also seen my Nexus 4 exhibit the same behavior with my car stereo, a clarion CX 501. It acts like it's buffering a song, no audio, but it definitely isn't my network connection because it's doing it with local content and the song doesn't actually pick up where it left off, it clearly just keeps playing on the phone with no Bluetooth output.
It's probably worth noting that it doesn't actually lose the Bluetooth connection, it just stops transmitting out of nowhere. It still stays paired and connected.
Also mostly unrelated... It doesn't seem to hold a Wi-Fi connection very well when Bluetooth is active.
Anyone else seeing similar behavior?

I currently use a LG-HBS700 bluetooth headphones with the N4 and so far, it's been working great, I've noticed its not so much the bluetooth thats the problem, but certain podcast apps that have trouble responding to the bluetooth controls on my headphones. So far, connection has been really good, I used to get occasional dropped connections with these earphones when connected to my iPhone, but no such issues with the Nexus 4.

That's really interesting. Your experience was the opposite of mine. My nexus s was really great with Bluetooth.
I find it interesting that this was moved to the Q&A section... Just because I asked for impressions and people answered doesn't really mean it's a Q&A thread. Hopefully it'll still get enough traffic here to get accurate impressions.

Stock, but rooted and unlocked. BT at first was not stable. Had to pair and unpair all my devices for it to stick. Only had to do that once and from that point bt have been stable. Using Parrot Neo Minikit speakerphone, also my jabra pro 9470 at work, and using the HTC Stereo clip to stream wirelessly via aux port. No issue now.

Thanks for digging those up! That's awesome. Hopefully there will be something in 4.2.2 that corrects this issue. You really brought some hope to me for this phone. Honestly bluetooth was the biggest complaint I had... I can live with the non SAMOLED screen and mediocre battery life... but the bluetooth has been driving me nuts!

I think I am official AA - Apple Anonymous member as of today. Specifically I'm referring to the iPhone 5.
The most important thing to me with my smartphone is downloading podcasts over WiFi and playing them back. I have experience with a very good Android app that I've used in the past -- called Doggcatcher. So I don't need help finding an app - subscribing to feeds, etc etc.
Since February I bought and returned the iPhone 5 -- 4 times. I know I know, its probably 3 more chances than you would have given them. All of the models were essentially plagued by the same issue. Poor wifi performance with large files. I regularly download at least a couple 30 to 50 MB podcast episodes via WiFi on a daily basis.
First I thought it was a DNS server issue. Some people claimed this was an issue with the "5". So I went back to my ISP DNS. Nope. All the other devices in my home on the same network had no issues DL'ing my podcasts on my fast 20 mbps connection. iPhone -- choke choke choke. 30% done and choke.
So I want to know from you Nexus 4 users -- do you ever have hiccups on WiFi when you are downloading on a solid connection or is is really good performance? For those of you with a technical background -- do you think the Nexus 4 has a better WiFi antenna than the iPhone 5? Something has to be wrong here and since I experienced this on 3 of the 4 phones I returned -- I don't think its me.
I've personally never had a problem downloading large files. Only thing I noticed is that dl speed slows down a bit if the screen goes off, but it doesn't lose the connection or anything & speeds back up as soon as you turn the screen back on. What I usually do if its a large file and I wanna DL it fast is I plug my phone into the charger and turn on the option to stay awake while charging in development settings.

The WiFi issue you were having on your iPhone 5 was caused not by the phone hardware but rather the software, iOS 6.
The nexus 4 also suffers from poor WiFi reception, also caused by the software.

so if after calling and texting -- downloading large files over wifi are the most important thing to me (podcasts) -- which Android would you recommend for me. Seems like you are leaning against the Nexus 4. Note 2 ??
I have been able to download 300 MB mp4 H.264 movies over 802.11N WiFi without issue.
Settings > W-iFi > Advanced > Wi-Fi optimization (deselect this)
This option (on by default) will cause WiFi to drop to slower connection speeds when screen is locked to conserve battery life.
There is an ARP issue, which once your phone screen locks, it will stop responding to ARP requests.
Ping your phone LAN IP after it sleeps to see what I mean. It's a knows issue on N4's
With 802.11N 2.4 GHz (65 MBs) WPA2 and AES. I max out around 25 MBs, about the same as my 802.11G (54 MBs) laptop.
WiFi range is much better than any previous Android device, and a little better than the work iPhone 4 and Blackberry's I have had.
ok don't laugh, but yes I still own a blackberry playbook. I recently bought a Nexus 4 and much to my displeasure I can barely get any connection at all when I try to connect the Playbook to my Nexus 4 portable hotspot. It's slow, connection constantly hangs, and more than half of the websites I try to connect to time-out. I'm so frustrated right now because even my crappy old Atrix 4g's hotspot worked twice as fast as this. The playbook connects fine with everything else BUT my nexus 4. Help?
How is the signal strength to begin with?

no problems, about -80 dBm
Don't feel bad. I had a Playbook for a while. It was a nice piece of hardware. Ran fast and smooth. Not having any apps killed it for me.
Good luck with your tethering. Have you tried to tether anything else and see what speed it was receiving? Could it be a problem on your Playbook and not your Nexus?

I've connected my Playbook to various hotpots which were fine. When it tethers to my N4 though over half of the websites I try to load do not even load at all. Which is really bad since it would work with my older Atrix 4G's hot spot better than this phone. It's not completely broken, it's just really horrible.
I just tested my N4 hotspot with my old phone and the phone had little trouble keeping a good connection to it. The playbook works fine on standard PC wifi routers so it seems that the Playbook wifi antenna hardware simply sucks at picking up the Nexus 4 hotspot signal. I was planning to tough it out on this Playbook until the next Nexus Tablets get released so I hope they come soon!
no slowness in tethering my n7 to my n4 wirelessly. i get as fast of tethering speeds as i do hspa+/lte speeds.
No issues tethering to my tablet... I didn't notice a speed difference between my old Atrix in terms of hotspot speed when I upgraded to my Nexus 4. It probably has to do with the WiFi channel the Nexus 4 broadcasts in not being fully supported on the Playbook, or something like that

I think that's the cause as well. The Atrix 4G and Playbook were pretty close to each other in release dates so that's probably why I had easier compatibility using those two together
Just out of curiosity, try changing Security in "Set up Wi-Fi hotspot" to open and re-test.
I had an old Netgear card that had speed issues with WPA2 & AES, but was file on WPA & TKIP.
Worth a shot.
My phone tethers just fine!
