Hi,
I am using red lense defy and CM10. When I use the dialer to call others, the screen will be automatically turned off and I have no way to lit it again during the call. Thus I cannot enter the choices for languages when calling these automatic voice machines. After the call, it will be lit again.
I used to have CM7 on this defy. The dialer worked pretty well. However, Skype on CM7 had the same problem. Now I can use the keyword while using Skype, but the dialer fails...
Who knows a possible cause for this?
Ok I've found the problem by myself. The proximity sensor is not working well. After cleaning the screen it works now.
However, is there a way to disable to proximity sensor in case it is malfunctioning?
Please ask all questions in the Q&A section. Thread moved there.
proximity sensor prob
my defy's screen is turned off during calling/answ. ok, its normal.
but i have no way to get the screen on again!! even not after the call has ended. the red light rom sensor keeps on glowing. i have to re-install battery.
i updated to cm7.2 yesterday. evrything is just awesome!!
before that i was on 2.2.2 official.
also my device's proximity sensor is not working well. between the range of 0 to 100cm, it shows 0 everytime.
same problem during call was there in 2.2.2, but i was always able to glow my screen.
pls help me with this. any way disable the functioning of proximity sensor?
Screen protector?
I know this thread is old but in case somebody stumbles across it like I did. I fought with this problem for about 2 weeks and finally pinned down my cause. I buy large protector sheets for tablets and cut my own to fit my defy. Works not bad. First time I ever forgot to peel the cover layer and got this problem. Before getting too crazy with programming, try removing your screen protector or at least the dummy layer that you remove after install. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Hi all again,
I must saw I've NEVER had to do so many posting for a single phone... anyway.
I just updated my Leo to 1.61 via a tortuous goldcard process and the proximity sensor is still not working correctly My wife is the main user of the phone and I was watching her while on a call- the screen was on and off like some demented Xmas lights.
I have a theory regarding the problem. It's only my wife who has the problem with the phone, it's seems ok with me (but I don't use it as much!). The phone is very wide, and the proximity sensor is not central. I think that the sensor is missing her ear (she has small ears!). The gap between her ear lobe top and her head is too great for the sensor. I tested the sensor gap with my thumb and it seems to be around 1cm to activate.
The hardware solution is either move the sensor so it's central (that's not going to happen soon) OR increase the sensitivity of it.
Does anyone know how to change the sensitivity of the sensor OR anyway to completely disable the touch screen during a call.
Hmm I can not believe that, I've tested my sensor:
It put the lights out if i come closer that 1,5 cm next to the screen during a call. So it think this is not the source of your problem.
But: I'm running a 1.48 rom...
I had the proximity sensor behaving eratically upon installing a screen protector. Even though I installed the original HTC screen protector which has 2 holes to position exactly over the sensors but even then I had problems. Ever since removing the screen protector everything is okay again.
Just thought if your problem also coincides with installing a screen protector.
Regards
The problem occurs when your hair overlaps the proximity sensor, the light immediately comes on. Stick the phone back to the ear and the proximity sensor works perfectly on time.
p.s. ive long hair and I too faced this problem and figured it out by running a few test as mentioned above ;-)
Hope this helps.
well, I'm having the same problem and It's not caused because of my hair. it just sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. the test I make is using the palm of my hand. if during one call It's not working, it won't work no matter what you do. then if I make a call and its working, I can turn on and off the screen placing my hand in front of the sensor..

I reckon you clear the area around the receiver and try doing a hard reset.
CAUTION: Take an individual back of your data rather than doing a full backup using some software.
same problem
Hi, I have the same random proximity sensor bug problem. During call accidental hang-up happens every day. I have short hair and no screen protector. Is there any solution for this yet? thanks.
I wrote to HTC already, but they claim there is no problem reported. Sory for my English.
Had a similar problem. My proximity sensor is now working fine. Install the 'Proximity Sensor for Screen Off v0.2' cab. Search the forum for the thread.
thanks for tip, hope this little app will "evolve"...
hi,
i had the problem with the proximite, that it is only working when the phone is in portrait mode. when im incall and portrait i can put my finger to the sensor and it is working perfect. when i rotate the display to landscape the sensor does nothing and the display stays on. unfortunatly i turn the phone sometimes on the way to my ear, and so the screen stays on.
i will try now the mentoined .cab and see what it does for me.
regards mad
Hey,
I'm having a problem with my proximity sensor. If I make a phone call, the screen turns automatically black, even if sensor isn't covered. And I can't turn the screen back on during call, only if the conversational partner hangs up, then it turns back on normally. If I try to hang up, the phone the display stays black for about 2min.
I'm having this problem only with WP7 & Android, works normally on WM6.5.
Hope somebody can help me.
Thanks in advantage.
You saying it works fine with winmo, it has to be a setting or bad flashing. You can try wiping your phone and starting over. I haven't played with WP7, but in some andriod roms there is an opition to use proximity sensor in the phone settings. Goto settings/ call settings. You might want to check and see. might be able to help you more if you were to tell what rom and how you installed.
This setting montecarlo5 mentions is available in cyanogenmod roms.
Are you sure there's no dirt covering your proximity sensor? Maybe Android is more sensitive than WM/WP.
I'm using RAFDROID HD 2.3 and like u allready said, the setting isn't available.
I'm having this issue on every NAND build i ever tested, but the sensor is 100% clean.
Please guys, don't open everytime a new thread before searching, if some one did the same -.- I made some tests to find out the reason of this issue and how to solve it (more or less).
Pls follow: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913134
I have latest Typhoon CM7 and after phonecall screen do not weak up. Phone is working (f.ex. i'm getting sms) but screen is black only buttons under screen is lighting. I read about it bug on few others forums but nobody know what is it. Moreover i have broken screen, i don't know does it matter.
could be a proximity sensor issue: when the problem occur just try to wake up the phone by putting a light source near the sensor (a lighter does the job) and see if the screen react. (see also this)
Trick with lighter working. So i must change touch screen. When i will do it, must I do something different for ex. clean light sensor?
before to change the screen i would look if it's possible to calibrate the sensor with some app. Or maybe it's just dust steady between glass/sensor so opening the phone (very carefully and following some good guide) and clean off may do the trick.
Same problem, no help, however in ICS after call you just press back button and screen comes on ^^
Try recalibrating the sensor as described above first
here's one app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951858
Also try disabling auto brightness. and make sure you set a profile in setCPU with clock speed more than 800 MHz when in call, in case you're using setCPU.
the last tip makes the screen turn on faster after call, but if it's a sensor issue it won't help.
I used to have the same issue, it was caused by dust between the screen and the sensor. Worked fine after I cleaned behind the glass.
Hello guys! After a long search on the recent questions in this amazing forum I couldn't find anything similar to my girlfriend problem...
Her Nexus 4 was just fine until the update to 4.3.. After that it started to show a problem during/after calls, the screen turns black completely (even when is not near the face or anything) and its impossible to do anything with the phone after that. Power button doesn't work, and there is only two ways to get the phone working again: the other person hang up the call.. or to hard press the power button until the restart...
I tried already to change for a 4.3 ROM and now I changed it to a 4.2.2 ROM... any idea or suggestions to a possible solution?
Thanks a lot guys!
I too recently had this problem. There was a simple fix after dealing with it a couple of days. My 4yo daughter had been playing with my phone after which I started having the problem. What I found was one of her hairs had become stuck in the bumper and was resting on the screen over the proximity sensor. Once I cleared that, no more problem.
The sensor is on the upper left of the screen.

If You use screen protector and it goes over sensors, than will be the reason of Your problem. Just remove it.
It could be the 4.3 update. I didn't have any such issues until the update and then they began. AndroSensor confirms that no matter what, proximity sensor is at 0.
Any thoughts on what to do short of RMA?

I can assure you its your screen guard that is creating an occlusion for your sensor on top left. Remove it and it will definitely work.

Not sure if I mentioned it earlier (perhaps in another thread) - no screen guard. That wasn't the issue. Finally, I changed the proximity sensor itself, all bueno. No RMA which means avoiding a bunch of hassles (namely new phone, data xfer, etc).

Hi everyone,
Long story short, I got a used Nexus 4 off someone, everything works perfectly except the proximity sensor. During a call the screen blacks out and doesn't come back unless I hard reset the phone to hang up. I figured out it was a problem with the proximity sensor. Upon reading these forums and many other articles on Google about taking off the screen protector (which I don't have) and swapping the rubber "sensor" holder holes, I decided to open the phone up and take a look.
It appears that my phone is missing the rubber piece to hold the proximity and light sensors in place, making the sensor unusable and causing many issues with making calls. I've tried playing around with it using other peoples' suggestions and nothing has worked. I've decided to just find a way to disable the proximity sensor instead during a call, as I'll be quite satisfied with just a simple software fix.
Right now I am using Proximity Screen OFF to keep the screen on, but it drains my battery pretty hard. I was thinking to just flash my phone with a mod that allows me to turn the proximity sensor off during a call.
Any suggestions as to which mod contains this feature?
Thank you.
