Difference in MHL and Slimport? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the Slimport adapter for the N4 looks identical to the MHL adapter I have for my SG3. What is the difference? I been thinking about trying the MHL adapter when I get home.

I read somewhere that slim port has the chip in the cable whereas mhl has it inside the device.

Also, SlimPort apparently supports the possibility of an analog (eg. VGA) connection, while MHL only supports HDMI/DVI and similar.

As it says, the DVI, DisplayPort, and VGA adapters aren't available yet.

[Hardware Info] MHL on the HTC One

Many of us are eagerly awaiting to get their new HTC One and are excited about how HTC's beefiest phone ever will perform. Still in love with my faithful companion, my HD2, this finally is the phone that seems a proper successor. Connecting current gen phones to the TV to enjoy video, images and casual games on a big screen is a nice feature and certainly not missing on the new One. However, since implementations of how phones connect to TVs do vary between phone vendors, it is generally hard to find comprehensive information about that. So I walked the extra mile and tried to figure out where the new HTC One stands and what TV screen performance we can expect from that shiny device. As you can see in the pictures below, it seems that the HTC One does not really stand out from the crowd when it comes to MHL because it appears that it still uses the (older) first generation MHL chip by Silicon Image which caps it to 30Hz refresh rates and lower charging current. I thought (read: I was hoping) that HTC announced that the One will have MHL 2.0. Sammy's plastic brick #4 will have it.
The best image I could find so far (second attachment) shows the Silicon Image MHL transmitter chip at the One's logic board. (Image courtesy by ChipWorks http://www.chipworks.com/blog/recentteardowns/2013/03/28/inside-the-htc-one/)
Unfortunately the imprint is not clear and there is some glue left on it that makes it hard to read. To me, it reads as:
8244B0
PW?433B
OL2242
(Red represents clearly readable characters)
If you take that information (SiI*2*4) and compare it with the ICs that Silicon Image lists on its website, the only chip that matches the recognized characters is "SiI9244 - MHL 1.0 transmitter with HDMI input". That chip was already used in the HTC One X a year ago (see bottom picture), so no innovations here.
SiI9022 HDMI 1.4a transmitter with 24-bit RGB input
SiI9024 HDMI 1.4a transmitter with 24-bit RGB input and integrated HDCP support

For comparison, the same MHL transmitter chip in the HTC One X is shown in the attached picture #1.

If you look up the chip's specs, you will find out that it supports:
HDMI 1.3
MHL output resolution support - from 25 MHz – 75 MHz, up to [email protected] 24/30 Hz
Silicon Image announced the second generation MHL chips SiI8240, SiI8246 and SiI8558 back in May 2012. Their new features include faster charging (up to 900mA to 500mA on the MHL 1.0 chips), doubled output framerate, which is 60Hz @ 1080p and 3D formats. At least the former two would have been great to have on the new HTC One since it should have enough oomph to provide a full 1080p60 experience. With the older generation chip we are pretty much limited to 30Hz. Most TV sets may fall back to 24Hz or recognize it as 1080i mode. This will probably make things get slightly choppy and laggy if viewed on a TV screen. Bummer to me but not a deal breaker per say. I am curious how others think about that!
What is your experience with MHL? Want to share your experiences using 24/30Hz MHL on your previous MHL 1.0-enabled devices?

MHL connectivity

Hey
I have a Micro usb to hdmi connector, it worked with my HTC One X, are they not compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S4?
You are using the old model (5 pins) which workable on SGS2 only. SGS3, Note 2 and SGS4 can support newer model only which has 11 pins.

Solution for HDMI or MHL Question of Note 3.

I just saw some guys mentioned that they are not sure hdmi or mhl functionality of note 3 and few people discussion MHL/ hdmi output. I write this to told you all who cares HDMI output of note 3. I am sure to tell that note 3 support MHL, which is is an industry standard for a mobile audio/video interface that allows consumers to connect mobile phones, tablets and other portable consumer electronics (CE) devices to high-definition televisions (HDTVs) and audio receivers. (here is the official link , shows that note 3 support MHL).
Therefore, if you guys who want to display note 3 via the MHL port of note 3 to a HDTV screen, all you need is a MHL to HDMI converter.

Any questions on MHL or HDMI, please give your feedback here. I am ready to help.
I can't get MHL cable to work through HDMI on TV.
I am using this cable. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I am using the 11 pin adapter. The cable works with my galaxy s3 but not note 3. I read it could be a kit kat issue. I am running MOAR_S5_Port v5 10-26-14. http://forum.xda-developers.com/note...5port-t2836713
Anyone else have this problem?

Please...., MHL doesn't work in G2, this was tested many times..., only Slim Port
thank you for help
but how i know the slimport model will work with G2 or any model will work
Slim Port work with G2, G3 (and more high-end LG phones - for all of these models try search in google) and Nexus series smartphones and tablets by LG. This is all about I know, probably more devices from other manufactures uses Slim Port as hdmi output but you must search in google. Of course without samsung, their phones uses only MHL.

LG Optimus G / Nexus 4 used MHL. Have an MHL adapter at home that I used multiple times with my Optimus G and the wife's Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. Was hoping to use it with the G2 ... but alas.
LG G2 / Nexus 5 uses SlimPort. Completely different adapter required.
This is stupid with different standards(money, money, money), something like many charging connectors, before microUSB standard, but Slim Port is little better than MHL, on Youtube is comparison

why bother with cables?
Why bother with Slimport or MHL cables. It has miracast. For around 30 bucks you get yourself a miracast dongles (ezcast most likely) and you stream everything you want from phone to TV. No hassle with cables.

Practically I agree with you, even if in theory Miracast protocol set standards up to 1080p streaming, and considering that miracast is a sort of wifi on direct between those two enabled miracast devices, should stream as the standard says. In theory... Practically even between two miracast devices of the same manufacturer (LG phone and LG smart tv) can be some problems of incompatibility and "dialogue". But still, when is the last time you saw a hi res game worth to play on big screen? Or... to stream a 4k video to a TV you must have that 4K TV.
As everyone said, you need slimport adapter. I bought this one and it works without problems: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271571917451?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
