Broke My first Pi - Raspberry Pi General

Well, I dropped my pi with a sd card in and it broke the little pieces of plastic that hold the sdcard down. have it rednecked for now with a small plastic clamp and another pi on order but that sucks.

If anyone has any idea how to fix I am all ears. I have emailed element 14 about USA repair options

It would appear you are not the first.........

If you are a card carrying member of the Hardware Jockeys' Association, i.e. you are reasonably skilled with a fine soldering iron and know a bit about repairing surface mounted components (Google) - you can get the part for a couple of pounds/dollars/euros and replace it.
It appears to be surface mounted - not soldered through the board, which makes it easier. It is still not an easy job, but it is not impossible.
You may wish to wait until the new one arrives before having a go at a repair.

Had that happen too. They may do it under warranty so avoid fixing yourself until you get a clear answer back.
One solution will be to glue a micro sd card adaptor into the slot permanently and use micro sd cards (there are even half size adaptors available too). Less chance of additional damage that way.

I have emailed element 14 The makers. I live in the USA so ordering the part posted on the Rpi forum makes no sense. I did find this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150932200123
and for 1.50 USD It will be good to have incase they dont email me back.

and just ordered one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350629703528

When it comes to the point where you are actually going to wield a soldering iron at it, you may find one of these things invaluable, if you do not already have one in your armoury.

Even if you do get another one for normal use, the old one can be used for something or ebayed.

Use the credit card fix http://raspi.tv/2012/how-to-fix-a-broken-sd-card-slot-on-your-raspberry-pi I added an extra piece to help hold the card down works fine. I used crazy glue

Or solder a mSD to SD adapter like that (I broke a RPi too)
See my Photo

Will it be too much for a $35 item?

My SD card slot broke too when I tried to place my RPi in my new case.
So I folded a piece of thick paper and placed it on top of my SD card so the top of the case itself does push on the card that remains in the slot.
As long as I dont't use an other card it works

Did you even TRY to search the forum first?
Old, old, OLD news. Don't try to put anything in there, it's just a hole and you'll lose your SIM.

WOW THIS IS SO GREAT!
Kidding... Did you check the forums?
This was discovered like on day one, in addition it's just the slot with no tech underneath, so if you try to put a sim card in it it will get lost inside the device and never be seen again.
In addition this has nothing to do with android development of the device ;-)
Cheers ;-)

lmao.. I hope you didn't put a sim card in there. It's just a open hole to the inside of the case. Anything you put in there will just rattle around the inside of the tablet. The wifi models DO NOT have the cellular device installed.
but is it usable though?
EDIT: nevermind.. stupid question
omg this is great guys, I just found a hole on the side of my tab that my USB drive can fit into!

I accidentally the whole tablet!
while this seems funny (well yeah it truly is) I had the back off of mine the other day (I took pics meaning to post them on iTweakit, com).
It got me thinking what was "missing", as in how hard would it be to add "the part" acer puts in the 3g version, there were no connectors, or non soldered points I could see, so I assume its a different logic board.
Anyways if you did happen to loose your sim card in that "hole" you can remove the back by carefully using a spluddger (this is a plastic screw driver intended to prevent marring the plastic) to gently pry it away from the clips. The thing is screw-less. I started around the dock connector, after the first "pop" the rest detaches fairly easily, you can use your fingers to continue prying. As a warning, remove your microsd card b4 attempting as it sits in-between the back and the logicboard.
Also I caution not to mess around with the microsd slot, I somehow damaged it slightly so it won't keep the card in unless I try to "click" it in about 20x at slightly different angles, so as far as I'm concerned I have a 48gb tablet now, as I won't be removing the sd card very often! At one point the card launched out (microsd slots are famous for such launches cause of the spring pressure), popped me in the eye ouch!
Yes, you have to be careful about sd.. I broke my sd card when disassembling the device (left the stupid thing inside). Anyway, with scissors or a screwdriver you can fix your sd slot. Usually any problems happen because it gets bent and either the card gets stuck or is too loose
Interestingly enough, there does seem to be a strange void space next to the battery, with two screw slots. Perhaps someone with a 3g model could take some pictures of their devices internals?

Anyone up-to-date on how a sim card connects internally? Could this port be hijacked for another purpose? If it's just empty space with blank solder points we could throw in another card reader (SD) or some other random piece of tech.

A 3G modem is supposed to be installed into the pci-express slot. On the wifi-only models the slot is not soldered and probably the pcie controller as well, although I didn't look for it.. But there's a lot of space inside so with some mad skills you can solder a usb hub and connect it between the pcb and external usb port..

XOOM Meltdown - Literally

I was about to update my ROM on my wifi xoom when I noticed that the edge of my SD Card opening was bubbled from heat, further investigation, my xoom had melted just behind the top of the SD card, causing the SD card to melt a little as well. Sounds like a manufactured flaw, is this something anyone has experienced? I hope I can get it replaced if I simply put it back to stock...
Photos!
I think we are all curious about photos .
But you should also make photos for yourself to documentate the damage. The problem should be covered by warranty. But Moto might say that SD card was the root cause of the problem, or that you inserted SD card wrong and generated a shortcut.
If the SD card would still work, Moto should not have much arguments to reject warranty. However, most cases I heard off Moto exchanged defect devices whithout any problems.
Chilli
>I hope I can get it replaced
The battery pack is the only component that can output any appreciable heat, and it's not at the edge of the tablet. Whatever caused the plastic to melt sounds like an external source.
It may well be chemically related, ie a liquid (solvent?) coming into contact with the plastic and causing a reaction.
You can hope for the best, but getting the manufacturer to foot the bill for external shell damage is just slightly easier than RMA'ing a cracked screen. Good luck all the same.
Damage... I sent them an email and will probably call them this weekend.

Agree with could have been external heat source.
Disagree with agressive fluid (plastic is very resistiv against all kinds of fluids and no residues of fluid seen)
Disagree wirh battery explanation (would be bad if power plant generator gets warm, but your hair dryer stays cold)
Moto has the option to check if a GND and battery layer are one above the other in that area. Than a crack in the PCB could lead to such a damage. Just interresting that it finally stopped itself so soon.

External heat source? It's always in my backpack when not in use... That doesn't make sense.
From the pics, it looks like a short that generated enough heat to cause the surrounding plastic to malform. PCB also looks charred. I'm surprised the slot still works.
Doesn't look like a manufacturing defect from here. Foreign (conductive) contaminant is most likely culprit.

The slot does not work...that's what brought my attention to it, trying to place a new ROM on the external card would just freeze in the copying process. How is a foreign contaminant even possible when the plastic little insert was on, keeping the bad stuff out?
@Brad: Just ment I could not exclude external heat source by the pictures. Did not mean that you left your soldering iron unattanted on the table .
I would leave the root cause analysis up to Moto.
Although the PCB has no formal coating, the are no SMD parts or contacts in the burned area. So solder resist should give a basic protection against pollution from outside.
Chilli
Since the SD card was in the slot at the time, it may well be the culprit. Suggest inspecting the card to see if the card's melted portion is extensive and includes the center of the card, or if it's only minor and at the periphery. If the first, the thermal issue likely starts at the card's. If the second, then the card's damage is likely collateral.
It's academic, at any rate. I'd be surprised if Moto would repair this under warranty, so be prepared for that likelihood. If not covered, the repair job would involve swapping out the mainboard, which may mean buying a new tab may be the more prudent option.
I would guess the card won't come out without dismantling the tab. And than warranty would be void. So we well not know the pattern of the cards damage.
I would assume one would need at least 5W for minutes to get this heat. I know it gets really academic, but I wonder if the cards bonding wires would support the needed current so long...

The SD card was in but the top part of the card is the only thing melted. The SD card came out, sounds to me that Motorola should replace a device that is unable to manage standardizes equipment, ie: SD card.

Probayblity of internal SD card failure is higher than probability of wrong handling by Xoom. I would still send in the Xoom with the card and see what Moto says. But you can probably only hope for good will.
Was it the best quality SD card you could find, or the cheapest one, not even with a brand on it?
I realize this thread is a little old- but I'm kinda curious as to how it turned out. Even though it was in your backpack and had a card inserted doesn't mean a paperclip, stray staple or similar couldn't have somehow got jammed in there. When I look at the pics, it didn't look like the sd card was the culprit and like you seemed to imply- it wasn't so messed up that you tried to copy files to it (the sd card) after the fact? Anyway- just curious what motorola did...
is this a 3g or wifi only Xoom?
Have to send it in still...wifi xoom. I'll let you know. Been very busy this month.

[WARNING] weak or poorly fixed power button

Ok, guys
This is my second Iconia that got broken power button in 4 weeks!
First one was returned to the shop within a week (second hand shop with one month warranty) and replaced with another one which was working just fine till yesterday night when my kid pushed the power button (she is just 2 year old skinny girl) and the button got stuck and did not respond anymore. What can I say... too fragile .This button is supposed to be pushed about twenty or so times a day.I never had such experience before. All my portable devices are nice and sturdy and even if i drop them by accident I've never ever got anything more than a scratch.Even though I loved this tablet I would say that this is a weak design point.Too fragile for a device of that class and price tag.
More interesting is to see what Acer's answer would be.I have no proper purchase receipt to claim my 1 year warranty since the item is second hand (mint, but second hand) and if they say they will charge me for the repair I will definitely quit the Acer's camp
I'll get back after call to the tech support
Are you the HULK or related to his family?
This has been mentioned here on the forums several times and the issue boils down to the fact that they've used cheap adhesive to attach the power-button to the motherboard.
It is actually pretty easy to repair yourself, though, just remove all the previous adhesive -- be careful not to scratch anything on the motherboard --, possibly heat the thing a bit with hairdryer or whatever you have in handy, and apply new adhesive while applying pressure to the contacts so that it doesn't come loose again. Just make sure you're using adhesive that is non-conducting! This whole thing takes about 5-10 minutes.
Yeah anyone needing to clean perhaps some rubbing alcohol and a little brush, it evaporates quickly

They were just trying to squirm out of the responsibility. They know perfectly well that replacing the button costs about 2€ (including taxes and postage!), it does not in any way or form require replacing the motherboard.
hummm did you get that 400.00 quite by email.. or was it a phone call.
Acer has a fixed 199.99 fee for all repairs on Laptop and tablet computers. The guy you talked to was misleading.. go to there website somewhere it tells about this.. Could you possibly show how you did the repair job? I working on trying to install an external power button, and this would be quite helpful. The tablet is going in the dash of my car, and the power button wont be accessible anymore.

Sorry, I can't remember the thread where there was pictures of this. But really, it's not difficult. You just heat the old glue so that it comes off easily, you can even scratch it off with something sharp just as long as you're REALLY careful about not scratching the motherboard.
Buy or loan one of those tiny solders clocksmiths use, they're great for small electronics work and a heatgun. Oh, and I still remind once more, whatever glue you're going to use please do make sure it's non-conductive.
Alright, I'll see what I can figure out. I think I've found an alternative to this, so we'll see how it works out. Thank you though.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me fix my tablet like you did yours. I have found LOTS of forums with ppl with this same problem and have tried to fix it myself. I don't know what to do. Some say to solder it back, some say hot glue, I can't even get the mother board all the way off b/c of the black tape/sd card/ whatever thing that's holding it attached right by the HDMI slot. My A500 has had a broken power button since July 2012. I used to plug it in or use a safety pin to reset and when it lit up I would unlock it and keep using it. That worked until the day I let it die completely. Now that it has died completely I Don't know another way to power it on besides using the power button. Could you post pics????

Whatsapp on Thinkpad

Hy community!
I am currently thinking of buying a Thinkpad.
My question is: Is it possible to install Whatsapp (current version) on thinkpad and run it without problems?
I tried it on my current Acer Iconia A500, but the applications says "device not recognized...". Is it because the Iconia has no SIM installed?
When I get a Thinkpad with SIM card will it work? Do I have to do it with the Titanium Backup method?
Best regards
I checked in the Play store:
The WhatsApp Messenger app states it is incompatible with the Thinkpad Tablet in both "tablet WIFI" and "tablet CELL" versions but it WILL work with my CM9 installation "Unknown Full CM9 on ThinkPad Tablet".
But when I flash CM9 to the Thinkpad I am loosing my warranty. Is this correct?
Is there an other way (with temporary root or so) to accomplish this problem?
you dont lose your warranty if your flash cm9 on it
if you send it in for repair or you mess it up, they just put a new board on it...
So, permanent Rooting the device is no warranty loss?
cool thing
yeah they just replace the board
however, id like to note that they do a pretty bad and sloppy job on it.
after i receive my tablet, the lines werent route as good as factory, they didnt use enough glue to glue the antenna in place, there were finger prints all over the the copper backing, it is missing some metal sheilds etc, the stick on copper werent stick or smoothed out at all.... etc etc
What depot did you send yours too? I have sent in many Thinkpads over the years and they have always come back pristine and looking great. Heck for the last 10 years all I have owned has either been Apple or IBM/Lenovo laptops. The IBM/Lenovo business class machines in particular the X and T series have never let me down.

Well it sounds great. One question persists. Do I have to use CM9 or will ANY rooted ROM do?
What criteria is responsible for Whatsapp to run?
Do I still have to backup on Phone and repair on Tablet with Titanium Backup?

hello
The center I sent it to was in Memphis, TN.
When I received my tablet - I was glad they replaced the screen (which had dust on it), and the power button (which broke), disappointed they replace my board (which was rooted),
Then I noticed the problem with the back- the Lenovo and ThinkPad sticker peeling off because they tried reusing it since they replace the backing plate (I end up going to ebay and buying two new stickers to correct their mistake, as lenovo support didnt even know those were stickers and thought they were one piece molded on the case)
Then I opened my tablet to install my Gobi 3000 card back in and I noticed a number of things wrong - including; Grounding strap for inverter not securely installed (I have since grounded it manually with a 12 gauge wire), LCD Cable was horribly ripped (I do not have a spare so I went electrical tape on it to fix their mistake), finger prints all over the copper backing, antennas not securely mounted and peeling off - grounding tape for the antenna peeling off - and all covered with fingerprints. The Antenna wires were also routed wrong so it would not reach my gobi card (I end up removing the board and rerouting the lines then installing my board again). I also notice all the metallic padding around the antenna and batteries were gone!
They replaced my cable that goes from the board to the power board with a weird cheap looking replacement. the battery was also not the one I had on when I sent my tablet in (i put a mark on it before I sent my tablet in)
The sticker for the serial number was put on pretty ****ty, so I end up removing it.
I also notice it was factory protocol to replace the screws when it was removed.... none of the screws were removed and they were all pretty stripped looking...
I just felt they could have done a slightly better job doing it... or if that is a problem, I would be more than happy to replace the parts my self...
when I called in because my gobi card failed, i had the option of sending it in to have them replace it or have them send me the card to replace it myself
I chose to replace it myself and that was when I found all these flaws in the repair...

[Q] HD2 motherboards

Thanks to HTC and the garbage job they do baking the electrical components in their phones I am looking for a HD2 mobo or someone who can do some PCB repair and at least get my mobo charging again. I have dumped money into a new digitizer and lcd, front keypad and mobo main flex cable and the main problem that caused me to destroy all those parts in the first place (micro usb port) still isnt fixed after my attempt at resoldering it to the board. Anyone? Thanks ahead of time, I've lurked here for a while and never really posted so I cant look in the classifieds I take it.

I'll post some pics later when I get home from work, when the port broke it lifted the traces for pins 4 and 5 which I understand are the ground. Pin 1 is apparently the +5 volt pin. Thats all I need, I can do without being able to communicate with the phone via PC. I really have no reason to use ADB with this handset and any ROMS can be loaded via my SD reader/writer in my PC and just reinsert the card to the phone after.
