I wanted to put out my views as to what's wrong and what's right with Microsoft Phones.
Apple have a good business model - create something that is aesthetically pleasing and has a rich gui - set up an app store to get more money after the sale of the device and link it with the itunes store to get even more money... and when this isn't enough to compete with newer models of phones - they just launch 1 monre iphone device with improvements to again compete... (remember the iPhone original and all they did was give it a 3g chip and people just had to have that!)
The BEST bit about this is Development... The devices get many many updates and if you compare this to windows mobile devices - you are lucky to get even 1 update from microsoft or the network or manufacturer during its lifetime - this is in order for microsoft to sell more windows mobile licences and the manufacturers to sell more devices.
MIcrosoft has just recently come round to understand that the money is in software people buy after the device is bought - the problem is they are playing catchup and so far so bad.
Without HTC windows mobile would have died almost as fast as a gastrotrich (google it).
What I want most of all is for my device to match it's potential - Currently I'm using HTC Touch HD and I just think that spec wise its far far better than an iPhone - however I wish that HTC didn't stop at just giving it a touchflo 3d scaled to fit the screen resolution.
This device should be an iPhone killer but it's not there at all.
my resons for this -
TouchFlo3d should have been re-sexified and made to completely skin wm6
Give ne a rich gui - Apple can do it - Palm with web os can do it.
All I can show off is my flipping clock and the weather demo.
Games - well Apple have fully embraced gaming - and due to the fact that windows phones have different display properties - and different technologies - there is not a game that plays well on all devices = especially with this device due to lack of hardware buttons.
resco's bubbles is the best game at the moment - but I want to see more than balls moving round my screen and the sony ericsson xperia game got me interested to see what it can do but probably will never see the potential exploited as htc need to sell more devices and microsoft more licences.
Microsoft either needs to buy HTC for a Massive figure to act more like apple - selling 1 or 2 models at a time - and then ensuring that new models are backward compatible and people who want to stay with the device can pay to upgrade the os like apple do.
sorry this was a bit of a rant - i just know that my touchHD will never beat the iPhone with everything that apple does to control the market.
My advice to Microsoft - Windows Mobile 7 had better be everything that windows 6 isn't.
HTC - make a device you can sell by the bucketload and maximise its potential.

Hi guys,
I currently use for my professionnal use my beloved treo pro, even it lacks some beautiful details of my ex 750v :
- glossy plastic instead of "velvet" feeling body of the 750,
- less than quality keyboard compared to the circled arrangement of the keys, and touch contact quality of its predecessor,
But higher resolution, wifi inside are so important improvement, that I could not go without.
But, as I'm getting aged (ok, not so much), I tried several other devices, but I did not feel at home as I do with wm devices, specially because of the sync way I use for outlook.
I dont want exchange things, wifi "ad hoc" created lans (as I used for my pixi plus), don't want either to depend on a third part (gmail, g something).
I use also an iphone, really great device, because it CAN synchronize on itself (yes, using itune,I reckon).
New winmo7 can't do that (wonder why?)
I also bought Bb Torch, tried a bold 9780, looking the future dakota specs, but again, outlook sync is so aukward, and so slow
I kept the iphone for what it is aimed to : a fantastic mini tab, super internet experience, multiple apps, but not very usable as a simple phone.
So, is there a wm device that will finally match my requirements
- a physical keyboard, NOT sliding (very unconfortable ro use with only one hand, that is one off the main reasons I did not keep the Bb Torch),
- Bigger screen possible (at least, more than the native 320x320 treo's),
- outlook sync directely with my computer
As it seems to me, there is only one pricey choice. the motorola ES 400,but I really dont need the military specs, especially because it's making it bolder.
So, any advices are welcome !!

Adding my 20 cents....
I also would like to change my Treo Pro with a new device with bigger screen and with possibility to have more apps, and that will allow me to buy and download updated maps for TomTom.
I have been searching the web before spending any money, and the final decision is that I will keep my Treo Pro forever.
- iPhone 4: could be the choice, as TomTom is supported, seems to synk Outlook (via iTunes, but better than nothing), has many apps available, but it needs a MINI SIM and I have a company SIM that i cannot change or cut.
- Android: sync with Outlook via cable does not work well, and I cannot use google because not allowed by my company. TomTom is not supported (yet ?), calendar will not handle recurring appointments after 3 months from today, Outlook contacts fields are handled differently so yuo loose all categories, groups and multimple phone nbrs for the same contact
- WinPhone 7: Outlook sync only via cloud, TomTom will never be available.
- WebOS: not so many apps available, including TomTom
- BBerry: I do not use push mail, Outlook sync has some problems, no TomTom.
I really hope my Treo Pro will last long. And if it dies, I can always switch back to my PalmOS Treo 650, that is still functional..

I'm after either Android or WM7 for the OS, so crackberries are out. Their newest has nice features but I don't want the BB OS...
Has anyone heard of any new smartphones that have a good touchscreen AND qwerty? I intensly dislike virtual keyboards, as I enter things by touch when I speed dial people. Can't do that on a pretend key. I use AT&T and would need a GSM phone.
Other than video, which is too tiny to bother with anyway, my Treo Pro has done everything I need it to do. Too many phones out now are either smartphones with NO qwerty or "messaging" phones without the capability the Treo has."

Treo Pro successor
I have been looking for a replacement for my aging Treo Pro for many months. I was contemplating buying a Blackberry Bold Touch, but they are not available yet on my carrier (AT&T) and cost more than $600 unlocked.
Then I found out about the Nokia E6.
The Nokia E6 has qwerty, touchscreen, and a d-pad (unlike the Bold Touch which has an optical trackpad). These seem like the most Treo-like features of any phone I have found yet. It seems to edit office documents, open pdf files, and sync with Outlook. An additional plus is that it is available on Amazon for $350 unlocked (cheaper than my Treo Pro or the Treo 680 that preceded it). It also has a 8 megapixel camera with flash and a newer browser than my Treo, two things I was hoping for in my next phone.
The drawbacks are smaller display (though with higher pixel count) and only a 680mhz processor. Some might say Nokia's move away from symbian is a drawback, but Palm no longer exists and I still like my Treo Pro.
I have never used a symbian device so I'm a little nervous about this phone, but if my Treo Pro continues to act up, I may have to take my chances and buy one.

Gone from a Treo 750 (...loooong time ago...) to a Nokia E72, then tried and Android device - after falling in love with Android, I have been looking for an Android device similar to the E72/BlackBerry devices, and although the waiting has felt very long, I think I have finally found the solution/right device: Motorola PRO+!
I'm getting my MOTOROLA PRO+ (AKA: MB632, "Elway Plus", apparently...), on Monday, from the UK.
This is a very good device (on paper at the moment, I will find out more in 48h when I finally have it) but for those of us that want a "bar" type, qwerty keyboarded, Android smartphone, for mostly emails, texting, calls (obviously) and - most important (at least as far as Im concerned): one of the best battery lives amongst all Android devices! - this is a dream!

MOTOROLA PRO+ "Temp Forum"
Im hoping not to be contravening any rules here but since there is barely any info on the MOTOROLA PRO+ at the moment (not much info either on its predecessor MOTOROLA (DROID) PRO), I though all little bits of infor around (I have posted a few things in different places) could be gathered in one place - HERE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19973225#post19973225 ...at least until when (and if) a dedicated section is created for this device...
I'm leaning towards Windows phone 7 or IOS in worst case. I just find MS phones so productive over Android. I went from a Samsung Moment to Treo Pro. So far, it doesnt feel like a downgrade.

Should I get the windows RT, which will be cheaper and I will get office with it. Or should I get Windows 8 Pro? (I'm aware of the $40 upgrade but this is mainly for buying a new computer)
Will the metro apps take care of most of the computing needs? I only need office and photoshop, everything else is done in browser.

Get Windows 8 Pro. Think of them like this:
Windows 8 Pro includes:
- Traditional desktop apps, so think of all the apps for Win 7
- Tablet apps, apps that you find on the store
Windows RT only includes the "tablet apps."
What Microsoft essentially did was create a system within Win8 where they added a layer where it functions as a tablet and all the tablet apps also work on Win 8. Pretty slick, but a little confusing. Example, an app behaves differently within metro than within traditional Windows... Overall, for $40, if all your apps work with Win8, then it's definitely worth the price.
Errr. Do you have a hybrid pc or something like that? RT version doesnt sell just like this. Windows 8 RT just come within your new tablet/ARM gadget. You cant purchase and install it.
You just have Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise (if im not mistaken). Anyway, Get Windows 8. There is no need to get Pro version.
Use Enterprise if you need wtg if not professional.

Enterprise also allows side loading metro apps a bit off topic for this but worth saying as this is a dev forum. Though i think enterprise is only available to business users (i may be mistaken as i have access to it i have not really checked but i did hear this).
I have downloaded msdn enterprise rtm trial to make my own wtg. When windows 8 releases I'll use pro.

I am aware that Windows 8 RT comes with the device, you can't buy it. But, I was asking if it would be worth it to buy that device with RT or wait for Windows 8 Pro b/c the battery life might be really bad with the Pro version.

Battery life will depend greatly on the devices hardware. According to what Intel claims Intel Atom based tablets will be available with a battery life of up to 10 hours. Those would support Windows 8 Pro and should offer comparable battery life to Windows RT tablets. But I guess we will have to wait until they are actually on the market to answer this.
you cannot buy Windows RT standalone, it only runs on ARM CPU's and is only available preinstalled on ARM hardware, dilemma solved.

Photoshop will not be released(at least in full form) on RT. That means that an RT device is totally worthless.

Photoshop for android is not Photoshop. It's photoshop express, and contains an extremely limited subset of features. Photoshop does everything you could imagine that's photo related. Photoshop express for android just does common photo editing tasks.

And that's why ALL pro photo editing is done on a proper PC and not a tablet. This is a joke saying RT is rubbish because of this I mean name 1 pro that will use a tablet let alone a competitors one ie android or ipad. Its like the world has lost the plot and the rubbish I read spewing over the web about windows 8 is some of the worst fud I have ever seen.
If your going for photo editing you need to be looking at least at a pro hybrid but I would say you will need more grunt like a dell xps machine.
I am going to buy the Windows 8 Pro version on release and get the upgrade for £25.00.
Windows 8 is 20% faster than Win7 in following Startup, Shutdown, Gaming, Browsing and general app loading
On top of that security is alot better than 7
This week, Microsoft will unveil Windows 8 RT on their Surface while other vendors will roll their tablets with it.
Since none of us has Windows 8 RT tablet yet and no one has started tinkering inside those tablets (hardware & software in the tablet), I was wondering about something:
Basically if we take a TF300 tablet and compare it to Asus's other Windows 8 RT tablets, they are exactly the same in terms of hardware. Tegra 3, Nand flash, etc. In terms of storage, I'm sure Microsoft doesn't use ext2/3/4 partitions, they probably use their own NTFS or Fat32 or whatever.
In terms if booting the device, Android tablets (which are based on Tegra 3 at least) use whatever nVidia gives them to boot the system, recovery, APX etc. In the Windows tablets they use UEFI with secure boot.
My question: based on public info which we know, how hard would it be to make Windows 8 run on TF300? how hard would it be to install UEFI on the TF300? (IIRC it's not a special chip, it's just a piece of software in the firmware, and as androidroot.mobi showed - you can write on the firmware whatever you want).
Opinions?

windows rt is sold only preinstalled, you cant buy it separatedly, you cant install it on something else than the tablet it came with.
and obviously you cant get the sources to thinker with.

Plus, I don't quite know for sure how an android tablet would be compatible with the windows RT, I am sure there are some stupid things they added to make it so it wouldn't work out. It always seems to be out of our favor.

difference is that android is open source and the source code is shared in order to facilitate user development
windows and apple are closed source, and not allowed to pirate
Comon guys, don't be such a moderator wannabe ... the guy is just wondering if it's possible to port W8 RT to a TF300. He is not talking of asking about how to hack a W* RT device.
For example, if you bought yourself a W8 RT tablet and you want to try to extract the software and load it in into your OWN TF300 for personal use ... i can't see the real problem here.

and, as we said, the answer is no, you cant, as microsoft wont sell you a copy.
Forget the sake of this discussion, forget about piracy. On many countries it's totally legit to grab a software from one of your machines and put it on another, as long as you purchased the software and as long as you don't give it to anyone else. For example: Microsoft allows you to install office with a single license on 2 or more computers, as long as only one of them is running the software at the same time.
How do you think all those emulators has began being developed? people started to talk if it's possible to run X application on Y platform, and if not, why?
Thats why I opened this thread - theory speaking, nothing more.

You have to be patient eventually it might be done. If i can run apples osx on my hp touch smart why wouldnt this be possible. but honestly id rather just buy the surface. if it is really a pc in tablet skin. Cuz honestly. I hate mobole browsers and all that crap. . Inever play games on my tablet only my son. All i do is watch movies and surf online. .sell tf300 buy surface.

Like I see it you'd need root or sth. on a Surface or other Win8 Pad, get the system of it with kernel etc., make it compatible with Tf300 and its bootloader and then get the wright wifi drivers etc. compatible - seems like a long work, but as I know from other portings not impossible!
I am sure some very clever people will give it a go sometime soon.

No Windows RT is a dumbed down version of Windows 8 with just the modern UI and a so called "desktop" for certain apps and it will not run any legacy windows applications. The RT version in my opinion is useless at least for the time being, because it need devs to make good content just like iOS and Android and that will take a few years. Just 2-3 years ago android was playing catch up to iOS, Windows RT will be the same.
The Intel based Surface i see great potentials for and that will be revolutionary to actually have the "PC in a tablet skin". With that one can run all software you have on a computer plus the great apps developers will make.
If you are thinking the Windows RT Surface will be any different then a Android tablet you are mistaken, sure there are few differences it will still use "apps" just like any other Android tablet and you won't be able to run and Windows games on it if that is what your thinking. What you want is the Intel based Surface.

You never know, devs have ported Android to Windows Mobile phones so there maybe a way to get Window on the TF300. If a Dev has his/her mind set anything can be done.
I would like to just point out that the windows 8 forum is titled windows 8 development and hacking.... This is basically the definition of what we do.
In my opinion, windows 8 RT is free with the hardware that you purchase, seeing as you cannot buy the software, instead it is given to you. I see nothing wrong with trying to get windows 8 RT on our tablets. It's not like Microsoft could possibly be pissed off with other people practically advertising their sh*t, because you know as soon as they get it working, they're gonna tell all their buddies who are gonna want a windows 8 tablet, and if they can't do the porting, they'll probably go for a windows 8 tablet.... like possibly the slate.

Looks like a fake to me.....running splashtop?. you can clearly see the android notification bar towards the end of the video.

You can see the Android Taskbar... so remote desktop.
But also, what will be the purpose of installing Windows 8 RT on and Android device?
We wanted a different platform...

Here's what I'm seeing with this news:
A. Samsung makes Galaxy/Ativ devices which are strikingly similar, possibly use same accessories
B. Samsung makes one device which runs both platforms, but can be purchased as each platform separately, each with slightly different hardware to match a price point (E.G. Galaxy tab $400 with 2GB RAM, Galaxy/Ativ $600 with 4GB RAM, keyboard dock):fingers-crossed: :good:
C. Samsung simply unveils separate devices, but the Galaxy is jailbroken, and since it runs on an Intel chip, Windows 8 can be installed via OEM license.:victory:
What do you think? Will any of it happen? I sure hope! This would be the ultimate device... even better than the Surface! :laugh:

AAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! ASUS HAS DONE IT! This is the most amazing thing ever, hopefully it's not phantomware (it sure doesn't look like it!). Asus today unveiled the Transformer Book Trio, which runs full Windows 8 on the keyboard dock, and Android on the tablet itself. It actually has two entirely separate systems, but they switch seamlessly. Unfortunately it's not two systems on one processor, meaning if this comes to market, it's gonna cost a small fortune! Anyway, here's the link! :laugh:
I think the trio is the exact opposite of seamless in my opinion.
It is pretty much a windows laptop with a dock for an android tablet which then becomes the screen.
I couldn't work on that. Working on an office document, pull the screen off for some portability at some point, windows and my document are now gone. Thanks for that Asus. That particular scenario could be alleviated with Google docs or similar but there are others problems like it that wouldnt be so easily fixable.
In my opinion. If you want to put two operating systems on the same device then just frigging dual boot. Plenty of atom netbooks used to dual boot between windows 7 starter and android, sisters one does.
Asus Trio
Well, as excited as I am for this - I have to say, if the tablet is undocked, and wont run Windows 8, it is a deal breaker for me. If they made it so that I could dual boot Android / Windows 8 off the tablet, plus dock it into the keyboard for WIndows 8 + dedicated GPU, I would be sold, but to only run Android on the tablet is just plain stupid. Ill wait until I can have a true hybrid device that is not compromised. I feel that they are coming, they just need a bit more work by the OEM's
Well yes this stuff is coming but I honestly think being able to dual boot OS is a silly feature for a consumer release product, who wants to be switching operating system just to run [other] apps on another OS? If you want android and windows in one tablet use bluestacks, if that isn't good enough stop fooling around and either get one or the other or pick one that will allow you to configure dual boot yourself.
Samsung just announced their hybrid tablet!!! :laugh:
Samsung is the largest tablet vendor outside of Apple, so it's noteworthy to see what it brings on the Windows side. Ignoring the AIO/laptop varieties, Sammy's sole Windows tablet, the Ativ Tab 3, disappoints at $699 (w/ keyboard cover) and only a Z2760 Clovertrail instead of Bay Trail.
Unless Samsung has more announcements in store, I don't see a Haswell tablet (or even hybrid) model. In fact, there isn't a hybrid except for the Franken-Q slider, which isn't a mainstream model.
If these are all of Samsung's entries for Windows this year, it's a fairly anemic line-up.
