Tablet won't turn back on - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i turn off my nex so it can charge faster after 1hr I notice the battery charging display wasn't showing so I decided to turn it back on it wouldn't start I pressed the power on button for at least 20min straight it wouldn't start I got very upset I kept on clicking then I got a logo does any one know what causes this to happen I'm stock with 4.2 update and this is like the second time it does this

You really press power for 20 minutes lol?
Next time just unplug the charger and wait a bit then plug back in. Do it several time and it will work.
and I do not know what cause the problem. It might be battery issue. or you usually left the battery die and Nexus 7 turn itself off? If you did that, that might be a bit of the problem!
Hope this help~

you don't need to turn it off to charge, you can just turn on flight mode...i leave our in flight mode overnight but charging and it barely uses any battery

Interesting you mention this. Last night I went to fire up mine and nothing....nada. Hadn't used it all day so I knew battery was charged. Waited a bit then pressed both power and volume (+ & -) at the same time and it booted. All was well.
Read where this has happened to a few other but not very often. Thought I might be looking at an RMA. 4.2 JB Stock ROM/rooted only. Keeping a wary eye on this development.

Long Press to Power On?

Anyone else have an issue with having to long press the power button 20+sec after powering down for more than a few minutes to get it to turn on?
Just returned an 8gb unit for screen lift and wanting a bigger storage capacity. Know its hard to get a perfect unit and I have found a perfect screen but now every time I power down I have to long press the power button to turn it on. My other unit turned on within a few seconds. Normal?
I've had that happen on 3 of them already. I've just learned accept it as normal behavior. Some days it powers on quickly some days i have to power it by holding the power button for 20 seconds.

How often do you power down your device? I probably never, unless have to.
Btw, I don't need ours the button for that long
Every Android device I have had expects a long press to power on.
Nexus 7 is one of the faster - mine takes about 4 seconds.
I expect the delay is to keep a momentary press from accidentally turning it on (pocket call).
I was panicked yesterday. After powered down, I could not turned it on.
Usually it will take a few seconds, but yesterday was about 20 seconds.
So I guess it is "normal".
I will no longer freaking out next time

Happens to me too. Every time it takes about 10-20 secs to power on. Generally I switch it off at night!
Yes there are times when I just press for 2-3 seconds and its powers up. Sometimes, it just doesn't power up even after 10 second... But I got used to this issue and I just keep trying again and again.
This is something Google should fix

Just bought one today and have this issue, about 10-15 seconds. Weird randomness. The first boot it only needed a few seconds. When you're travelling like I am atm its good to be able to power off if i dont know when i can charge it the next time. I wonder if its hardware or software. Nice device anyhow, the screen is so so but at this price i wouldnt expect better.

I had the same issue and thought my battery died, but the weird part is if I plug it into the oem charger it wouldn't show anything either. Don't know if that's normal or not.

Same here, I purchased it, held the power for a few seconds to power it on and it worked. After a few days I decided to turn it on one day and it wouldn't power on til I googled the answer LOL
mine booted up super quick at first, started loading it up with apps, and after my 2nd full battery discharge i noticed that it took 10-20 seconds to turn on. i have a C8OK, very very slight left side lift (not enough to be a bother) and i had super minor flicker at low levels of brightness. Funny thing, i got LUX brightness app with the free 25$ and use the "sub zero" brightness setting, i like to save battery and keep it dim, this has eliminated ALL flicker for me. i was thinking it was hardware doing this as other tegra devices had flicker, but now i think it is something with droid settings/software. i would suggest all those with flicker to try this app.

Are you talking about boot up time or time it takes holding the power button before the device switches on
For switching on it should only ever maximum take 10-15secs of holding power as holding power for 10secs simulates a battery pull

[Q] Nexus 10 (16Gb) completely bricked

- Steps to reproduce the problem.
I have seen a couple of other freeze ups from time to time, rather randomly, in various apps, not just Chrome.
In this case, I clicked the "All Apps" button in the lower right corner, and it froze.
- What happened.
The system froze, and then the screen went black. Now I am completely unable to restart the tablet. I does not matter how long I hold down the power button, either alone or combined with the volume up/down, it remains bricked. While connected to USB, it will show the battery charging icon in the middle of screen every 10 seconds (stays on for ~3 seconds) while I'm holding down the power button.
As of now the tablet is basically dead.
The tablet was running Android 4.2.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Power with volume up and down at the same time til you hit fast boot?

I know this will sound stupid, but are you sure you have battery?
Or try to hold the power button for about 20 seconds until N10 vibrates. That's it.

Keep it plugged in to the wall for a few hours and try again

it may be worth reading this and possibly popping out the battery just to see if that helps.
did you resolve this issue? i just started having it. i know i was running out of battery and then my n10 wouldnt boot past the x screen after a restart. i left it plugged in but i dont know if it was charging. now it won't turn on and i get the same issue you have. i have it charging over night but i dont think it is going to help =(

Thanks for replying but after me thinking it was broken for 2 months it suddenly turned on on its own last night!
Not really sure what was wrong to begin with but when it turned on I had 0% charge for a few hours, really strange.
Same issue for me on 32Gb model.
I had a flicker screen once last week and today it doesn't boot up. I connected it for an hour but all I get is the fully charged battery icon when I press the power button, sometimes with a flicker screen or red/blue/green dots all over the place. It doesn't vibrate, it's not recognized by my Windows 8 computer.
I bought it through the eBay US deals and it sucks cause I'm in Europe...:crying:
Call +18553926398 from Skype. It is a Samsung Nexus Repair Center. From Skype it's free of charge line. I had problem with battery in my nexus 10 32gb. I had to send it to US on my cost. I spend on it (from Poland to the US) about 70euro(by UPS), from the US to Poland about $50 (by DHL). But Nexus came back repaired on warranty and it took about 1 week only. It easy and It worth to try. Important: Samsung Repair Center can send your fixed Nexus only to the US (to the US it's for free), so I used MyUS.com for 'a proxy' to send it to Poland (and this part cost about $50).

So..my nexus 7 won't turn on..

Recently updated my n7 to 4.2, haven't done anything beyond rooting. I woke up this morning, watched an episode of Prison Break via Netflix and went to work. I always plug it in before I leave, and it was saying it was charging before I left.
I get home from work today, and upon trying to unlock the device, it doesn't turn on. I unplugged it, checked the plug in it was using, even tried multiple different electrical sockets. Plugging it in usually brings up the off charging animation, but nothing. Anyone know what might be going on?
My sincerest apologies if this has been asked/questioned before; I did a little searching before I posted this and couldn't find anything about it. Thanks in advance.

Try holding down the power button for 10-20 seconds.
If that doesn't work, try leaving it plugged in for a couple hours and check back on it.
Also try plugging it into the computer and seeing if your screen has gone bad, the Nexus 7 should still come up if it's on.
...I really can't believe I made a post for this..rofl. Thanks a lot, I guess I'm just a little too impatient to hold the power down longer than five seconds.
If mods wanna delete, feel free.

Try holding down vol up & down buttons and then the power button. Then you should be in the reboot/recovery menu. It should say start. Push power button to power up.

Had the same issue today...thanks to all for the quick and easy fix...feel like such a dork!
I'm having the same problem, last night I tried to turn on my Nexus7 and had issues.
My device is locked and upgraded to 4.2
While booting, the device would get to the lock screen then immediately power down. While it was powering down the screen would fuzz over and glitch a few times. As soon as it turned off it would repeat the process. I eventually got it into the boot loader and I noticed "based version: N/A" I'm not sure what that means but I hit start and now all it does is get stuck at the multi-colored X logo.
Getting back into boot loader I tried recovery mode, the response is "No command". Tried plugging it into my PC and I get the little (ba dum) sound but no device or folders to be scene.
I think i'm in trouble. I wanted to see if I could root it just so the device works again but I can't access it on my PC.
Can anyone think of a step or process I forgot to try?
My Nexus 7, wont turn on anymore either i charged it , it was very low went down to 11% battery so i turned it off and charged it, saw the battery on the screen and now.. It will not turn on, unit feels very warm when charging. It started to lag a bit , before i turned it off.. its normal software as supplied by nexus. so..> no matter how long i hold the buttons.. its off and screen stays black..
doh....asked for RMA number..only used it for a month
My Nexus 7 32Gb won't turn on either. I've been having since I got it the battery has been showing 0% since I turned it on. Regardless of how much charging I did it never changed. It ran fine and was told it might be to do with calibrating the battery but it then started to have problems turning on. It's gone off and I've tried the various power on options mentioned in this thread and nothing is working.
I guess it means a return to Carphone Warehouse. I had just got it all set-up as well.
I had rooted it and manually upgraded it to 4.2.1. It was running fine bar the 0% battery issue. I did the same thing to my Mum's 16Gb Nexus 7 and no problems at all with that one.

New Nexus 7 Died after 2 Hrs Use
Nexus 7 shut off after only 2 Hrs of use and placed on USB charge. Tried holding button down for 30 Seconds and up/down combination with Power and nothing worked. Opened back cover carefully and patiently with Plastic Opening Tool I already had. Disconnected battery for thirty seconds then replaced connector without removing battery. Snapped cover back on. Hit power and it turned on. Do not use metal on case to open. Hope this helps. I got the idea from Youtube Video. I'm a new user and Not allowed to post links yet. Nexus 7 Teardown Review.

Thanks a lot I holded power button for more than 15 sec it got powered on thanks for your information.I am Happy now.
Man, I was just freaking out. Just got the wifi 16 on Monday. Rommed it as soon as I got home. Was using it at my local watering hole, and it suddenly just would not respond. Black screen, yadda yadda.
15 seconds of holding the power button and boom. Google logo, and then SmoothROM's boot ani. *wipes forehead* Never been so happy to see Jessica Nigri's face! lol
Thank You
I had been turning the Nexus on and off for the last couple of days, No "problems".
I tried to turn it on a couple of minutes ago and NOTHING. I even pluged it in and the battery charging icon did not turn on.
I also tried holding the button for 5 seconds but still nothing.
Fix:
I had to held the button for over 15 seconds to get it to turn on.
Thanks!
Similar problem with my nexus 7. Battery charge shows up when i plug it in. If I try to turn it on while its plugged in, i get what looks like static and lines on the screen. When I unplug it, it dies. If I hold the power button down, and plug it in, it will boot normally, and everything seems to work fine, but the battery shows as dead, and as soon as I unplug it, it dies.Just got it, it came with 4.2.1 running on it, it was an open box from Best Buy, and developer options were already enabled on it. Looks like someone tried to root it, f'd it up, and returned it. Guess I'm taking it back and returning it as well. Just a major pain as it's 1.5 hours each way from where I live to the closest best buy and back.
My problem is an easy fix, return it. However, I'd like to know if anyone figures out a fix for this incase it happens in the future.
Thanks.

My observation leads me to believe that this is typical for a battery that has been left on with a completely discharged battery. But it shouldn't take an hour.
My thinking is that this is product of bigger batteries and higher current requirements. Although I'd like to hear from someone if holding down the power button will start the device in spite of very low charge.

Good luck. But please do not make double posts and post questions in the Q&A forum next time, ok?
Always use the stock charter, and charge it over nigth, I think this solves your Problem.
Plug it for 30 minutes. Then restart.
If not unplug/plug battery by opening back cover.
Maybe battery was disconnected.
Did you try holding volume up + power? I had this happen to me as well and I did that combination while on the charger to get my N7 to turn back on.

I actually had this problem last night. My battery was at 20% a few days ago... left it idle, went to use it last night and bam, nothing.
Plugged it in for a few minutes and tried to boot, nothing. Left it for about 5 minutes and then just held down the power button until something happened, and finally I managed to get the battery icon to appear. It would stay for a few seconds then the screen would go black. Then it would return. Rinse, repeat. I couldn't even get it to stop doing that. Eventually gave up and just let it charge for another 10 minutes.
Looked at it after that and it was booted. Battery page shows it dropped from 20% to completely dead instantly. Not sure what's up with that.
The whole time I was doing this procedure, the notification light was pulsing in sequences of 5, if that means anything to anyone.
Anyway, tablet is fine this morning.
