Theming for cm10 - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I've been looking for a place to start theming on cm10. I've gone through a few guides and realised that to theme, XML coding knowledge is required. Is there a way to theme without this?
I've also tried to open themes made to find the changeable icons and such but it seems to be such a hastle to keep track. Is there a different way? For example go launcher has an add on and a site dedicated to making themes. If there are guides and or people in our community who can help it would be awesome!!!
Thanks in advance. I'll update this thread with the different links I've gone through in a bit.
Help in any form would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers!!

For cm10 u must know some XML basics, its not that hard, u must only follow the tutorials and try it your self.

For Jellybean you must have some XML knowledge. Android is moving away from hundreds of compiled pictures

To all developers: please help me out

Hi all, I have a question, hope all of you guys and Rom developers will help me out.
First, how to create framework.
Second, how to create the boot animation.
Third, when I need sign it, what should I choose in signapktic? There're four options.
(I'm not for creating Rom purpose. I just want to learn and customize what am I using right now.)
Please teach me, your help is needed.

I'm guessing you mean framework-res? In which case you open it up and just replace the images.
Creating a boot animation i can't help you with, but the search button can - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708316
Just use a tool like PhoenTools or something to sign, there's only 1 option so you can't go wrong!
Ya, but when you flash it, it is not in image. They just combine it. And problem is how to combine.
Btw, thanks, I will try it out soon

Hey guys, I'm sorry...

'Sup guys I'm new to this forum, what I am looking for is how put themes on my Xperia X8, so if you can link me to all the right threads and give me a few basics to start me off about all this Androd stuff please, I'm a quick learner (NO HOMO) <--- That was retarded But yeah please help me out and tell me what I need to know.
Thanks

First, read the sticky named All things root in the Q&A section. Read those things, do them to your phone and install a 2.3 ROM from the development section ( GingerDX recommended). Then, go to the Android themes section in the Android forums, not in the X8 forums. There is a sticky with tons of themes. Download what you want, install it like a normal app and apply it using the theme chooser app in your 2.3 ROM. Good luck.
EDIT: You will only install themes that are for MDPI devices. That stands for Medium Dots Per Inch. Our X8 is one of those devices.

Thanks for that I understand that, but after all that how do I get the "ROM" actually installed?
So I succesfully rooted my phone and all that, Yipee! But I still don't know how to get the actual CUSTOM "ROM" installed/put on to my X8. Any instructions please?
-Thanks
All the instructions you need are in the posts Chris95X8 linked to, you just have to read them carefully.
Yes done it all, does anyone know how to get the HTC clock?

You can download NTsense theme (or something like that) for theme chooser.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1167075 here's the link for all the t-mobile themes but i think this one is what you're looking for
You could also download Beautiful or Fancy Widget. They have lot of HTC-look based skins.

I wanna start developing

I have noticed a lot of stickies and whatnot on here and I have decided that I want to start building ROMS, Kernals, and themes. Can anyone guide me to a really good detailed guide where I can start?

Here's one Lithid put me on a while back, it's more about general android rom cooking

Here's another one I found called "Porting Sense to other Sense Devices", you might find it useful too

Go to evo3d themes section and look at stickies. One of the best guides on here. It has some of the best themers giving guides and sharing knowledge.

[ INFO ] Links to Get you Started Working with Android

Ok so I've gotten a few ( quite a few ) PM's about wanting to get started doing some " Dev " type stuff. Since I'm not the even close to the being able to teach . I'll do the next best thing I can. I'll Link you guys to Guides, Tools, and anything I can think of that you may need to get going in the right direction. Just remember READ, READ, and READ some more. Don't be afraid to use the search feature . Oh and BTW this is just the ones I know of, and can think of right now ( It's been a long day ). If anyone else knows of any feel free to post up. I know I'm forgetting stuff. I'll change the OP as it needs to be adjusted.
One last thing. Although by all means I encourage you hitting the THANKS Button for the Links . I would also remind you to hit the THANKS Button for the authors of the Guides Linked. They put a lot of work and Effort into them, and I'm sure they would appreciate it .
Thank you Gentleman for the suggestions and Additions to the Links. It is much Appreciated.

Much appreciated. I'm nowhere ready to start on any significant dev work, but i'd like to try my hand at it after the first of the year. I know the basic basic basic basics of programming in general and i can follow logic well enough, its just time consuming to sit down and actually try it out. But i absolutely love the shift and would love to see things continue with it.
nice collection you got going on there prboy, im sure a lot of people will find this very helpful
Just trying to help out .
I would also link to baksmali & dot9 compiler, don't have links handy right now since I'm at work

The best Linux tool I've used is by Tommytomatoe called android-utility and I'm almost sure there is a mac version.
Has adb functions to push and pull,a logcat function uhm will do apks and jar files.
Another Linux tool I've tried was something along the lines of studio android and the last I checked that tool would set ones Linux box up to compile from source in a gui I'm guessing something like lithids.
Maybe a Windows tool to have would be win merge if it let's you compare text files and directory's to see what's different

Why would you start a ROM project with a "dev team" if you don't even know how to debug boot problems?

this question is asking the same logic as "why is my computer slow?"
there are 78,644,223,887 available reasons why,
i'd suggest broadening your "team's" knowledge of the principles and basics of the software industry,
Did you cook your rom with kitchen...If yes then youm must sign your rom and all apps inside it.To My thoughts the rom does'nt even start this is the most common case.Check whether your rom contains boot.img and build.prop as if Kitchen din't report any error. If you modified framework please sign it with Jarsigner and other modified apps also. Now sign your rom with kitchen and then flash it.....
Gud luck,
Im awaiting your rom..
optimusinc
Best I can say is try installing the modded apps one by one..c if they work..then test ur tweaks to b if they work..n finally make the zip file correctly by comparing to other zips..mostly probably u messed up ur updater script..
Thanks....

i understand that you are a budding developer,
however i've seen you making threads recently on issues that could be solved be either doing research and proper utilization of the search function,
if you really want to learn i'd suggest learning it the proper way by researching the basics and understanding how the android system works, making question threads won't help you at all and it never did for everyone else,
as you can see you need to look for the answers on your own,
considering google and xda has both a search engine,
please care to look into those matters which confuses you,
try first building your own updater-script and making a flashable zip file,
proper ROM building is not easy so i'd suggest keep your heads up and learn it the right way,
also,
people will just probably troll and ridicule you with threads like this
