I have noticed a lot of stickies and whatnot on here and I have decided that I want to start building ROMS, Kernals, and themes. Can anyone guide me to a really good detailed guide where I can start?

Here's one Lithid put me on a while back, it's more about general android rom cooking
http://htcpedia.com/forum/htc-hero-android-development/1404-[howto]-rom-cooking.html
Here's another one I found called "Porting Sense to other Sense Devices", you might find it useful too

Go to evo3d themes section and look at stickies. One of the best guides on here. It has some of the best themers giving guides and sharing knowledge.
Thank you papa Smurf, I'll check that forum out!

Is it as easy as taking a Nandroid backup? Just curious as i am making a Rom tailored to my liking, nothing special as i am just putting together bits and pieces of others peoples work, and would like to share (and give credit where it is due of course!)
Thanks!
Good question. I would like to know also if there is some kind of tutorial out there but that is probably a stupid idea. I'd even be happy with learning how to create a flashable theme...
Such is life...
Good luck!

Other than using a JK6, instad of JK2 for froyo... no. I do not even know where to begin when it would come to things like that. I leave that to the pros.

Heres a good place to start: http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html
I dont think there is anything written specifically for the vibrant yet, but there are lots of other guides floating around for other phones and while they wont be exactly right for our phones, they should at least give you an idea of whats necissary.
and heres a good starting guide written for the hero: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551711
And from Cyanogen himself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667298

Ill buy your phone for $100
If you are running Windows 7:
Make sure you right click on Odin when you start it up and select run as admin. also, reboot your system and hit F8 to get the safe mode options, then select to disable driver signature enforcement. That made my Odin actually start working and flashing.

Ignore the lame-ass troll comments, If you want help and did not find in the stickies, then you will need to post more info in order for us to help you, need the things you have tried and what was the outcome, Then we can maybe help, but there is not enough info in this post to really help.
Hello can someone one point me in the right direction to root a buddys X and flash a Rom and what Rom u suggest ??
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The easiest way to root your phone is to use Z4Root, I believe it is still in the Market. After you've rooted, the easiest way to ROM is simply go to one of their threads here, and follow the directions for that very ROM. All three of Apex, Fission, and Liberty are good. It's a matter of personal preference. Remember to wipe when they the instructions to tell you to do so, and always make a nandroid backup.
Oh BTW, when you use Z4Root, you have to be patient, it can take a long time, and sometimes it simply takes one or few tries. Just let it run, and if like 15 minutes and it's still sitting there doing nothing, pop out the battery if it's frozen, and just restart the app if it isn't.
I suggest you use liberty. 1.5. It has many customization options that I enjoy. But fission and apex are also very good roms
Guys can u plz tell me where to get the roms plz doing this for a friend

this is like the 4th thread this week that your guide helped someone from my post
im just happy to be helping!
I see a lot of threads out there to start making Custom ROM's. I was just wanting opinions on the first place to get the most reliable information.
I basically want to know what it takes to build a ROM from scratch or at the very least modify a current ROM.
I am currently running Nitrous v1.3.3 on the HTC EVO 4g.
For compiling from source, lithid-cm has a thread in the dev forum titled "wanna learn to dev correctly?", but I don't know if it's still active.
And I believe if you wanna modify an existing ROM, you'd wanna use dsixda kitchen.
Sorry, that's the best info I got.

Much appreciated. I will check both of these out when I get home. I'm at work. Shhhhhhh.
Ok so I've gotten a few ( quite a few ) PM's about wanting to get started doing some " Dev " type stuff. Since I'm not the even close to the being able to teach . I'll do the next best thing I can. I'll Link you guys to Guides, Tools, and anything I can think of that you may need to get going in the right direction. Just remember READ, READ, and READ some more. Don't be afraid to use the search feature . Oh and BTW this is just the ones I know of, and can think of right now ( It's been a long day ). If anyone else knows of any feel free to post up. I know I'm forgetting stuff. I'll change the OP as it needs to be adjusted.
One last thing. Although by all means I encourage you hitting the THANKS Button for the Links . I would also remind you to hit the THANKS Button for the authors of the Guides Linked. They put a lot of work and Effort into them, and I'm sure they would appreciate it .
Thank you Gentleman for the suggestions and Additions to the Links. It is much Appreciated.

Much appreciated. I'm nowhere ready to start on any significant dev work, but i'd like to try my hand at it after the first of the year. I know the basic basic basic basics of programming in general and i can follow logic well enough, its just time consuming to sit down and actually try it out. But i absolutely love the shift and would love to see things continue with it.
nice collection you got going on there prboy, im sure a lot of people will find this very helpful

The best Linux tool I've used is by Tommytomatoe called android-utility and I'm almost sure there is a mac version.
Has adb functions to push and pull,a logcat function uhm will do apks and jar files.
Another Linux tool I've tried was something along the lines of studio android and the last I checked that tool would set ones Linux box up to compile from source in a gui I'm guessing something like lithids.
Maybe a Windows tool to have would be win merge if it let's you compare text files and directory's to see what's different
