Nexus S = iPhone

Yep, for me personally the Nexus S is like the iPhone. I am just so happy with it
Let me explain. My first smartphone was a big, sturdy Kyocera 7135, running Palm OS, and it was sort of OK, crashing at times, but generally useful.
Then I went through several HTC-made WM5 and WM6 phones, which promised much, but ate my nights and weekends flashing and reflashing ROMs to make them useful. It was a time of obsessive flashing, fixing bugs, only to introduce new ones.
Then came the iPhone. And it was bliss. It worked. It looked good. It was updated regularly. Of course I jailbroke it, but it was more for sport, than anything else. As I said, it just worked, and it worked well.
Then Steve Jobs opened his big mouth and told me that Flash is not coming to the iPhone. Which pissed me off.
I had been keeping an eye on Android (with vague interest, but also disdain at first). The EVO came out, I almost got it, but it seemed a bit too tacky and clunky. When the Galaxy S came out with its gorgeous screen, I thought the time had come to give the maturing Android a try.
After the initial excitement (mostly with the SAMOLED screen), I found myself spending my nights and weekends flashing and reflashing again. To fix the GPS, to fix the Market, to fix FCs.... It felt like being back on WM6 again.
Worse, I discovered that while Android is an open platform, in practice it is locked just as tight as iOS by the manufacturers and the carriers. Really, there is very little difference: there are tons of developers working on modifying the iPhone in many ways, including UI. I just never thought most modifications were worth the effort. I feel the same regarding Android.
And with Android, if the manufacturer decides not to update the drivers for a phone, there is generally little the developer community can do to make that phone run the latest Android updates well.
So, I was getting disillusioned. When the Nexus S came out, I decided to give Android one last chance.
I've had the Nexus S for close to a month now. It just works. It's smooth. I don't have to think about it. I haven't even bothered to root it yet.
I feel like I have a phone again. Just like I did with the iPhone. Except that it does Flash
I wish it had WiFi Calling and 720p, but overall I am happy. Hopefully these will come, in due time.
I will almost certainly never buy another locked, modified by the manufacturer Android phone. In most cases, the specs are for suckers, to sell them something which they don't need and most likely will never use, to get them to upgrade every year. That's part of why Android manufacturers do not support "old" hardware, but instead push the specs and the marketing hype up.
But you know, my two year old iPhone 3Gs ran smoother than my Galaxy S and my Vibrant, with half the horsepower. In most cases, it's the software, stupid!
That's why, for me, the Nexus S is my new iPhone.

Often one has to live through tyranny to really appreciate freedom. With the iPhone and every non-Nexus Android phone, the "government" (i.e. manufacturer/carrier) is oppressive, and the "rebels" (i.e. XDA, Cyanogen, ...) have to fight tooth & nail to gain freedom. With the Nexus line, the government (Google) is supportive and the no-longer-rebels can modify to their hearts' content without fear of retaliation. This is the world of Nexus, and it is Good.
Just so you know, voip calling is explicitly supported on Gingerbread. It's not the official T-Mobile Wifi Calling app, but it also doesn't use up your plan minutes. Just search for it here or in the T-Mobile user forums for the Nexus S.
And 720p recording will certainly be added in the future (probably as a custom ROM tho).

Great idea, I think this practise is wasteful and is only designed to make already rich companies even richer You're right; specs are just purely marketing gimicks.

Software is the next big battle ground that's always been my view. Because we will reach this point where sure hardware can get slightly better, but most of the innovation will come down to the software space. That's why the Nexus fits this idea so perfectly!
Good choice on your Nexus S! I'm not disappointed with mine at all, and I came from iOS (iPt 2g MC - pos) and Symbian (E63... alright for the price when I got it I guess).

Had the Nexus S 2 days only but I like it. I have kept my iphone 4 for a week or two to make sure I don't change my mind.
My only problem with it so far is it eats the battery so much quicker than iphone.

In the US, the carriers don't sell phones. They sell contracts. If you're a good little consumer and buy a 2-year contract, you will get a shiny toy to play with. And then, looong beore that contract is up, they will dangle even shinier toys before you to trick you into extending the contract.
Even the Devil makes you sign a contract only once.

Jobs can suck it
Hey I totally agree the iPhone 4 was my last device and this Nexus S is pure bliss, still some poor quality, and poorly coded apps on the Market and the games are still nowhere close to the iPhone yet but they are coming, the Nexus S and Gingerbread has steered me away from iOS and anyone who knows me will tell you that is something. Thank you Google. Looking forward to many threads here with you all.

I've been around for 5 years now and I didn't understand.

I don't know if the NS = Iphone but some owners that owns the nexus line sure acts like them, they can't take criticism of their phone and thinks everything that google touches is golden.

yeah too bad some people are stuck on iPhone 4 thanks to google doing the same band act as it did with N1

Ways to get some angry response in a thread lol

I think one area which the Nexus S (and Android in general) is not comparable to the iPhone is the keyboard. It pales in comparison. Typing on Android remains one of the few sore spots of the Android experience; one that is inferior to typing on an iPhone, or even an iPod Touch. I've always been very critical of Android's keyboards, and while there are [better] alternatives, like Smart Keyboard Pro or Better Keyboard 8, it's something about the Android OS, or the Nexus S screen (too sensitive?) that causes me to be unable to type as smoothly and confidently as I can on an iPhone/Touch.
I'm no Apple fan boy, nor do I care for Apple's dated OS or philosophy (which is more or less, "the average user is a complete idiot" - not entirely untrue, and needless to say, is a model that works wonders for them), but I can still respect the iPhone and what Apple gets right. And if there's one thing that succeeds, it's the typing experience (and generally, the touchscreen experience). And in that respect, the Nexus S =/= iPhone.

I'm not trying to pick a flame war, but i did get some heat for saying the NS wasn't the revolutionary phone that the original N1 was. Still is a good phone but the vibrant or the mt4 isn't that far in terms of a performance and in some cases they surpass the NS.
That behavior was already taken place on the N1, there was some heated battles when the vibrant was released. I don't know what is the big deal in all that, nothing will change the fact if you are happy with your phone but sometimes i see unnecessary name calling and flames in a discussion.
It has become very childish almost the same stuff you find at engadget, there is always a heated battle in an android or apple post.

Sorry have to disagree here.
What determines how good any soft keyboard is how quickly and accurately you can enter text. The worlds record for texting is with a swype keyboard. The best platform for text entry belongs to android.

You make a good point. I was more comparing the thumb-typing experience on the Android versus the iPhone. I don't account for Swype because I'm not sure if Swype-ing the fastest in a contest translates exactly to everyday use or ease of user interface. Regardless, the thumb-typing method of Android pales in comparison to the thumb-typing experience on an iPhone. Yes, it is widely determined by how quickly and accurately you can enter text, and that's precisely where the iPhone's keyboard succeeds. It's great that Android can provide an alternative to this method (it speaks to one of the greatest strengths about Android: diversity), but the fact that it requires such a novel alternative to compare speaks volumes of which is better in terms of actually typing/thumbing. What I'm saying is, comparing Swype to thumbing on an iPhone is like comparing oranges to apples (no pun intended). Anyone who has typed extensively on both platforms should understand the difference.
A tangent: my issue spills over to the touchscreen interface in general. I'd argue it's better (more responsive, more reliable, more fluid) on an iPhone than on any Android device I've ever used, including the Nexus S. Again, I'm no Apple fan boy nor am I interested in starting immature flame wars. I'm simply not going to deny where Apple's technology and software can and does beat other developers and Android. I have been, and continue to be, critical of Android, but I do so out of the desire to see it improve. There are times when the typing and touchscreen experience on Android can feel second rate.

I was poking fun at the folks who come from other forums to inform us that we're all imbeciles for buying the Nexus S when their device/something coming out six months from now is so much better and we're incapable of making our own choices without their input/consent/approval.

Why? Have you actually used swype on a day to day basis? I've used both platforms extensively and I can say that after a some training swype is clearly the superior typing solution.
Maybe your preference is for thumb typing, but that doesnt change the fact that its faster to swype.

I can type much faster on Android stock keyboard (Froyo/Gingerbread) than iphone..it is a matter of getting used to it.. I dont like iphone keyboard with no pop up suggestion..Since you are just talking about stock to stock.

Thinking about an iphone over Android

So I've been an avid follower of android over the past year.. rooting, trying different roms.. doing some adb programming.. coming up with some simple mods etc.. No question that Android is a tinkerer's paradise!
there are a few things that irk me about android in general.. which is not necessarily android's fault.
first and foremost there seems to be an alienation between the device manufacturers and android.. in the sense Android (with it's flavors) is probably the fastest OS to get obsolete by another flavor of itself. We have Sense 3.0 that is coming up in Summer.. Droid Incredible still hasn't seen any gingerbread or sense 2.5 development OFFICIALLY!..
True there are custom roms of the same available.. but it is patchy at best in terms of the whole android experience coming from the manufacturer. We all know the limitations of the Z-roms.. a lot of us are no fans of vanilla android and so on..
Lets face it.. the camera/ 720p recording on iphone 4 is unparalleled (try it first hand to believe it).. not to mention the display is gorgeous albeit smaller.
The OS integration with the hardware is very appealing with the iphone4.
I'm getting a little tired with the constantly changing android environment. I am equally miffed at the fact that many android devices including my Droid Inc are left alone to the user to be developed and enhanced. After a year of trying roms, keeping up with mods, working out bugs, testing etc.. I think my experience as a USER of the device.. is somewhat shadowed.
I'm thinking of making a jump to the Iphone where development is more organized compared to android.
I'm not an apple fan boy.. so please don't bash me if you don't like my post

The iPhone 4 is definitely an awesome piece of hardware. I say go for it and if you get tired of that come back to android.

You will miss Android keyboards. I'm sure of that!

I've actually been thinking about the same thing. My buddy just got the iPhone 4and it's a nice phone.
Now the Incredible is my 1st smart phone and I've had it since pre-order. I rooted as soon as it became available and have been flashing ever since. I really love Android, but agree with some of the things you've discussed in the OP.
I still have till Christmas before I am eligible for an upgrade, so I have plenty of time to contemplate my decision.

My recommendation would be at least to wait for the iPhone 5. There would be no point in downgrading to a smaller screen.

Iphone 5 is not due until Fall 2012 or early 2012 at the earliest.

The only point I would disagree with is the camera/camcorder. My girlfriend has an iPhone 4, and her pictures and video do not turn out nearly as well as those from my Droid Incredible. Removing any subjective analysis, the iPhone only has a 5MP sensor compared to the Incredible's 8MP.
That said, Nokia has put out phones with much better cameras than either.

I say you go ahead and give it a go. I've played with a few iPhone 4's and they are quality pieces and very smooth. As long as you stay with Verizon, you can always return it within that 30-day period if you are unhappy with it (of course you have topay a restocking fee though).
I just can't get over the fact that everwhere you go you see someone with the same phone. I personally tend to go against the norm. I not very well acquainted with the customization of the iPhones but I have heard it's on par with what we have going with Android.

A leaked Verizon document stated differently. Also that doesn't seem to fit Apple's release patterns? Just saying.

I switched to Android from iOS and I do agree about the screen, camera and hardware but for me Android doesn't compare to iOS. If I wanted a phone that did as advertised and only that I would choose the iPhone but if I want more control and customizable options I would go with Android. But that's just me, for you the iPhone seems to satisfy.

That is a nice feature; being able to download ROMS and change them as you like I will agree. How much control do you need though? What options do you not have available on the iPhone that you will not live without?

Yea, I am all for customizations and like I said..I tweaked the heck out of it.. but the downside of constantly customizing is you gotta keep up with revisions, market updates, bugs etc... and pretty soon ...though the pleasure of tweaking is always there.. there is a setback to the user experience.
The one thing that I think (at this point) that I absolutely need is Widgets. Don't have that on an iphone.. and don't know if that is something I can live without.

I also came from IOS (albiet an iPod Touch). The only thing I say it beats android in is text selection. I can do everything in 1/5th the time it took me on iOS. I was VERY skeptical of Android and preferred an iPhone a year ago on Vzw. I was actually WAITING on it. I'm so glad it came this year instead of last. Now, I have absolutely ZERO desire to be sucked back into the problem that is Apple and their godlike stance over their customers.
Take that for what its worth I guess. I also have a Mac and used to love it. But after multiple times of it burning several hours of my weekend for simple things a PC did better and for free, I've become an avid "hater" of Apple (and I don't say that about many companies). They overprice everything, but they know their uses will blindly go and shell out money. Take music downloads -- iTunes may be easier to use than Amazon MP3 (before CloudDrive), but I've saved so much money over the years switching to Amazon. Lets not even go into their overrated hardware or the times where they can provide a feature but don't so they can add it in a year to make just one more money. Our Dinc's may not be top dog anymore, but at least the hardware is good enough to push us into next year and beyond.
Speaking of beyond... I'm thinking about making a security came out of Dinc when I get another phone. hehe

I couldn't imagine a life without Android inspite all of my complaints...it'd been a love affair for the past 1 year..I do have an Ipad..which is a giant iphone without the phone...
So I bought a thunderbolt today with my employee discount.
.after swapping contracts with my wife.... for about 150 bucks.. and boy do I love it!.. I thought the display would not be as good as the droid incredible... but trust me it's a lot better...and a 1550 quadrant score out the box! I guess it's time to switch communities.... thanks for everything guys.

When I was still a T-Mobile customer, I had the 1st Android powered smartphone, the HTC Dream/G1. Boy did I love that phone. Once I rooted and started flashing I couldn't stop... After the HTC Magic/MyTouch 1.2 came out, I moved to that. The story was no different there. Roms, roms, and more roms. I moved to a BlackBerry for a time after that before finally giving up and leaving Magenta in favor of Big Red. Once there I had the LG Ally, and returned that after it overheated. In exchange I walked away with the OG Droid and loved it! Eventually, I moved to the Inc after acquiring the device through a 3rd party. Once the touch display stopped functioning I got the iPhone 4 out of necessity because the Thunderbolt was delayed, delayed, delayed. I loved my iPhone, the picture/video quality was superb. Facetime was nice, and the games... Geeze I miss Infinity Blade. Anyway, I soon became tired of the OS itself. The lack of customization was rather boring. I found myself spending more money in the Cydia store than Itunes. I was constantly buying themes and whatnot. After a time I could no longer cope without Android. I found the Thunderbolt on Craigslist and traded my used iPhone for the NEW Thunderbolt! I know this was a long post, and I expect to see the classic, "Cool story bro." comments. Long story short, do what makes you happy, make a decision and stick with it. Me? I'm an Android guy through and through.

When I was still a T-Mobile customer, I had the 1st Android powered smartphone, the HTC Dream/G1. Boy did I love that phone. Once I rooted and started flashing I couldn't stop... After the HTC Magic/MyTouch 1.2 came out, I moved to that. The story was no different there. Roms, roms, and more roms. I moved to a BlackBerry for a time after that before finally giving up and leaving Magenta in favor of Big Red. Once there I had the LG Ally, and returned that after it overheated. In exchange I walked away with the OG Droid and loved it! Eventually, I moved to the Inc after acquiring the device through a 3rd party. Once the touch display stopped functioning I got the iPhone 4 out of necessity because the Thunderbolt was delayed, delayed, delayed. I loved my iPhone, the picture/video quality was superb. Facetime was nice, and the games... Geeze I miss Infinity Blade. Anyway, I soon became tired of the OS itself. The lack of customization was rather boring. I found myself spending more money in the Cydia store than Itunes. I was constantly buying themes and whatnot. After a time I could no longer cope without Android. I found the Thunderbolt on Craigslist and traded my used iPhone for the NEW Thunderbolt! I know this was a long post, and I expect to see the classic, "Cool story bro." comments. Long story short, do what makes you happy, make a decision and stick with it. Me? I'm an Android guy through and through.

In my opinion, stick with the Android. I just had an upgrade from Verizon and I figured what the heck, let me see what all this iPhone hype is all about. Well, after my first full day with the iPhone, the only thing I can find that the iPhone has over my Incredible, is the battery life. Gmail wouldn't push unless I used a workaround, you can't hide the keyboard, no separate volume controls for the ringer, email, and text, there is no back button to go back to an app you may have left, no trackball, no weather widget with clock, I sent a ringtone that I made through MMS and there is no option to save as ringtone,you can't share youtube videos through sms-only through email, and you are tied to stupid iTunes when adding pictures and media. Like I said, the ONLY reason I am keeping this iPhone, is for the battery life. When the Droid commercial says "Droid Does", they are telling the truth. I NEVER came across anything I tried on that phone that didn't do what I needed from it. Again, these are my opinions and I'm sure an iPhone fanboy will argue my points.

As many others, I too have extensive experience using both OSs daily.
Android makes a more usable phone. iOS makes a better tablet.

SGSII Safe until September

No phone is perfect but remember when you buy an iphone no flash, no flash, no flash...it's not that it's not possible to run run but apple have decided for you the user experience it just not good enough, you can't even try it for yourself and remove if you don't like it or keep it even if a half baked flash is good enough for you, nope apple have made the choice for you: no flash!

Expect to wait a while longer than september. The iphone 4 plus will be coming first with some minor improvements but no major changes.

And you know it's not only that I dislike the apple mentality of them making the (right) choices for me I also despise apple as a company, I am a free market capitalist at heart and very seldom find companies evil but apple is one such rare company:

I'm sick of my iPhone 4. I've been a hardcore blackberry user for years, and yes, while the experience wasn't as nice, it was A LOT more open than iOS. iOS has some good ideas, unifying a single format / layout, and all its apps follow the same guidelines, which makes it a good phone for people that know NOTHING about phones! A friend of mine DECIDES to pay THAT Much more for an iMac just because "it works right away, I don't need to configure anything" and Apple products are basically that... "It works without having to do anything" I personally jailbroke mine, and I still can't stand it. Apps apps apps apps! No personalization past ordering up the apps, and 2 pictures (lock screen and behind the apps).
I think Android will be safe for a very long time. They run on a different market. Not to mention, Apple sells things WAY over priced. The iPhone 4 16 gigs cost me the same RIGHT NOW as my SGSII (which should be here at ANYYYYY moment! Come on vodafone! It was shipped! GET TO MY DOOR!)
Apple makes good products for a good demographic, but you also need to understand that the majority of the population doesn't want to configure, or decide. The simpler the better. My BEST FRIEND of 15 years now has a blackberry and an iphone, still, she only texts and uses facebook. Hmmm....
Regardless, you shouldn't see it as "the SGSII is in danger or safe" as it's the family of Android phones. You don't see people saying "Oh no! The iPhone 3G is in danger! But there are 2 other models out! BUT POOR 3G!" No, who cares! more choices = better, for us!

Really the first multitouch capacitive touchscreen build in 1972! when apple introduced it, they meant they dug it up from a grave and reanimated it!

The only thing i dislike about andriod phones are that there are so many with lots of different specs.. I cant just download any app and use it right away. As for iOS there is only one phone each year that uses it.. which makes it more easy to download any app you want and use it right away.
I hate downloading apps just to find out that it crashes, lags or doesnt even start up.
I like andriod OS better then iOS.. but like i said.. there are too many phones using the andriod OS.
As for Macs.. yeah.. i think they are worthless. You pay so much more money for something that is less powerful than a custom built PC.
I built my PC a few months back and i also got a 27" 2560x1440 monitor (to match up with the iMac 27" screen)
It cost like £100 more for my PC but its 100times more powerful than any iMac.
Also.. the reason why the iPhone4 is still the same price is cause apple only lowers it once a new iphone comes out. They know that people will still forke out that much cash for an iphone.. unlike samsung nokia htc etc.. they always lower the price of their phones cause they just bring out so many per year that they have to.

I really don't think iphone5 would've affected SGS2 sales that much. I'm preety sure I5 will be a good phone but not better than SGS2.

My personal uneducated guess would be that the iPhone 5 will be a speed bumped iPhone 4 shipped along with iOS 5.
Which in the end, still doesn't make it better than the Galaxy S2 right now.

Do you really think people cross-shop iOS and Android? Apple people follow their leaders cult-like and keep re-purchasing Apple products. For people that want easy and consistent, nothing beats an iPhone. But those same two points, especially the second one, is what make people turn away. I for one can't stand the banal conformity of Apple products and can't see myself becoming one of the Borg. To test the theory, go to an iPhone forum and post a question about iOS vs. Android. They'll skin you alive.

If you are okay with a smaller screen, having to manage music,photos,video library via iTunes (having a mac helps ) then even an iPhone 4 is a nice choice.
It has unrivaled battery life, does everything its supposed to do pretty good, has enough apps to keep you busy (if you are a heavy apps user that is) etc.
Me, I couldn't get used to a 3.5 screen after using a captivate for a week, the itunes is horrible on my windows machine, drag and drop ain't bad and the retina hype is not enough to match the super amoled awesomeness....
Its all preference, IMO try your options if you can, and settle for what is good for you. I am here today because flashing my captivate and the screen plus music playback is awesome, and battery life after modded is almost on par with iPhone 4. So all good for me.
What you like may be hated or laughed at by another, and that's life.

i wouldnt be able to live with a 3.5" screen. There have been rumors that the new iphone will have atleast 4" screen.. if not then i wont even think about buying it.

My opinion: I don't think Apple will be releasing a mind-blowing, bar-setting iPhone 5 this year.
Perhaps next year, iPhone 6 will be.

Please don't forget that the iPhone is a device mainly targeted for the women crowd (can't remember where I read that over 70% of iPhone users are women). As such, it can't get bigger than 3.5" screen, since their small hands couldn't handle it.

Hmm...Atrix 4G spots a 4" screen but the phone itself is about the same size as the iphone

i think the OP has made a decision that he should buy IPhone simply because he is fed up with one or two annoying features of SGS2.... is that true my friend ???
just because of 1 or 2 features which u might like it better on iphone, dont make ur decision of buying an iphone 5.... because no matter what, SGS2 can beat the iphone 5 right out of the box... in addition to that, so many customizations r coming including the CM7... which is great... u never feel the same as before...

One of the reasons why I moved from the iPhone 4 to the S2 is because every 2nd person I see has an iPhone 4, it was depressing.
And the inability to change notification sounds meant that whenever I heard the notification tone play, I had to second guess if it was my phone.

Until Apple decide to change the way they make their iPhones, android will still be way up top.
Even when iPhone 6 comes out, the SGS3 will probably be 2x better lol.
Also, the majority of iPhone users who purchase an iPhone don't even know what android can do/is capable of and assume iPhone will always be the best phone out...

I agree the tests were too slanted toward the Note, but it was designed to show what it can do that the iPhone cannot. I am not sure you cannot get an app to edit PowerPoint files, but the rest would be quite difficult without some very sophisticated software. The photo editing and screenshot / drawing is all, but it makes a great point!
The fact is this is marketing. Nothing has to be true or fair. As is being argued in comments, Apple tried exactly this with the caricatures of the Apple vs PC users. Payback's a *****, guys!
I believe the iPhone was a great phone when it was created. The iPad was also a great idea, much better than the laggy Windows Tablets. Some of the best things about these have been copied in Android. The painful truth is that the phone and pad have not improved. The painful reason is the same one that Apple, who started with the first commonly available GUI (I know about X-Windows, before you start, heck, I used to use it, but it was not in common use). That reason is a lack of change. The reason for that reason? A closed platform, and for both hardware and software.
Look at what happened to the very open architecture of the IBM PC in the same time frame. Look what is happening to Android devices in the same time frame. I think the reason for the stagnation is clear.

Prior to the GNote I had owned every iteration of iPhone since it was first released (preceded by Windows Mobile phones, Pocket PC's, and almost every model of Palm devices up to the IIIc). So far, the GNote is by far the most functional device I have owned. Since I am using it to replace a 4s and iPad 2, I have not found it to be too large - in fact, if it was another 1/2 inch I wouldn't mind (that's what she said <g>).
Anyways, no regrets with my decision to jump ship. Great device!

As much as I love the Note, and as much as I love seeing Android put Apple to shame, I do think it would be a much fairer test if the 4S were pitted up against the GS2 i9100. The GS2 was considered the best smartphone of 2011, and it's no wonder! Love that thing!

Yeah the comparison is stacked as I can do all those things with my wife's Iphone albeit with third party apps and so would any self respecting geek. Then again so are Iphone commercials, as is latest windows challenge.
It is almost imperative that advertising not be fair.
The reality is that the lady is just average consumer and as such, they are pretty dumb.
Hell, in my immediately circle of family and friends there's about 20 iphones and none of them know anything past calling, checking messages, emails and Facebook.

If I go to the street with my 7 year old Windows Mobile, and run a similar test against most recent android phones, what will I prove?
Besides, there are capacitive stylus for iPhones, and if it was an iPhone user with one of these capacitive stylus to make a similar add against any unprepared android user, it will have the same result.
I understand there are a lot of iPhone haters around here, but one thing is that we know our phone is better that an iPhone for many reasons, other is to offend and ridicule others because they don't follow you.

The original web ads about the features were so much more "Woweeee! I want that!" for me....

Just ran a sun spider bench mark and got 1331. So a lot better than 4s. Its obvious how the devices differ and which device is clearly superior. No idea why apple fan boys get so crazy when a better device than theirs gets released though. If another company releases a higher spec device... why does it matter. Its almost certainly gonna happen to us note users at some point. But I take pride at the moment.

As stated, this is for my younger sister who just got out of college.
She's considering a tablet and I have a Note II which I love. I've always been an android user, since the nexus one (which she uses since i got the galaxy nexus).
When I'm reading online, even android websites say that android tablets are not on par w/ the iPad. I see that it's about the apps, but I feel like all the big apps are on android too, so I'm just confused.
Has anyone here had significant experience w/ one of the "new" ipads (3rd or 4th) that can offer their thoughts?
The reason I'm considering the Note 10.1 is because the only other 10 inch android tablet that seems good is the transformer infinity and their forums are just RIDDLED with problems, which I don't see Note 10.1 users having. So it seems to be the most stable 10 inch tablet on android.

There's two ipads in my home. My step sons and my wife's. My wife just got the 10.1 after seeing mine and gave her other son the ipad. Just go to a store a try all your options and see what you like best.

Depends on what she wants, does she want high resolution screen/media consumption device or a device more geared toward productivity?

You need to consider what your Sister wants to do with it.
What does she do for a living, what brand of phone does she have, will she be a casual user or a power user.
Would she be happy with a plain Jane iPad as far as customizing goes?
Will she enjoy the artistic aspect of the Note 10.1's S-Pen.
As far as apps go... both android and ios have a wide range of quality apps. that would satisfy user of any age or profession
I have used iPod, iPad, Blackberry Playbook, Kindle fire, and a Note 10.1
My favorite device is the Note 10.1 here are some of the reasons why
The S-Pen, muti-window & dual view, air view, easy clip, smart stay, buddy photo share, live video w/ chapter preview, smart remote, formula match and pop up play.

Once you get used to that you never wanna have something other. I tell you, two aspects of the note are essential: as mentioned the multiwindow feature and the spen (including all the hardware). I use my note for studying and all i have to carry to university is this tablet. I do ALL my work on it with lecture notes but thats another long story... you can find a lot here in this forum.
Back to the multiwindow thing. I promise you, once tried you ll get addicted to it. The feeling is "pretty close" to working on a desktop/laptop machine. I owned the p7500 before i moved on to the note and that was a whole new experience. But to be honest you have to be rooted to REALLY use multiwindow in nearly every app. out of the box it just supports a couple of stock apps and that really sucked.

The Note is the best tablet on the market with one glaring deficiency: it's 147PPI display. Nothing competes with S Pen, S Note, multiview, airview, and all the additional features Samsung packs in to it. For someone that values those features (I do) the 147PPI display is the price you have to pay to get them.
For someone who just wants consumption, the two best tablets are the Xperia Z or Samsung P5200 (their version of the Nexus 10). The first was just announced and I'm not sure of when it goes on sale in the U.S. The second was leaked with no detail yet on features (other than the display resolution), price or availability. The N10 has a ton of issues and because it's "pure Google" missing a lot of features in other tablets. If you have a Costco near you buy her a Note there and, if she doesn't like it or something new comes along, you can return it within 90 days no-questions asked.

Well, it looks like I can get a refurbished one for 380 on ebay. I think I'm going to do that. The Xperia Z looks like a VERY premium tablet, so I'm sure it'll carry a premium price too, and she can barely afford the $380. I would've got her the nexus 10 as I love my nexus 7, but after reading through xda, and seeing that it has nothing but random reboot problems...I said f that.

The Nexus 10 is better then the Ipad in EVERYTHING.

All apple products have the apple philosophy of being closed, limited.
Apple makes easy products, suited for your grandma.
To do this they have to RESTRICT your freedom to do things with the device. This limits what you can do with the device and limits your control on even your own data, but it limits also your chances to damage your device by doing something wrong.
A elderly person should buy an apple product because it is easy and an elderly person does not need advanced features.
A smart, young person should buy an android because it gives him the freedom to modify/customize everything and lets him do whatever he wants.
It is a political question:
Do you prefer the former "Soviet Union" (Apple) or the USA (Android)?
Soviet union (Apple): Easy life, the state gives you a job, a home but you have no freedom. (Apple Ipad: easy to use, but limited freedom.)
USA (Android): You have the freedom to become a billionaire like bill gates or fail and land homeless in the streets. How good or bad your life is, is in your hands. (Android Note 10.1: You can do whatever your want and can do many things an Ipad can not. But, you can also root your device, do some error and brick it.)
The Ipad does not have a Pen!
Try to use a Note 10.1 with the Pen for a week and then tell us whether you can continue to live with a device without a Pen.

Get her the Ipad, if you get her the note 10.1 and see what its like she won't end up with a new tablet or you'll have to get another one...:laugh:
I use my note 10.1 for everything. It does everything the ipad does and more. You can customise it to how you like it and change the rom if it doesn't suit you or you aren't getting updates. Modding is easy and throw in the s-pen and you have a brilliant tablet. So I say, get your sister the Ipad or you'll end up with a new tablet and she'll be disappointed....:good:

Iran's nuclear ambitions are a political question. As is Palestine vs. Israel and Pyongyang's lunacy du jour. Android vs. iOS is a practical question. Do you want your tablet experience to be easy, consistent and well defined out of the box with content spoon fed to you and in return give up some flexibility? If so, pick iOS. Do you want your tablet experience to allow for a high degree of customization and configuration with more content flexibility and in return you have to have a higher degree of technical knowledge and need to invest more time? Pick Android.
I'm committed to Android personally but consistently recommend iOS to my non-technical friends because for people that just want to do stuff without having to think about it iOS is a better choice. If someone asks me whether they should go with Android or iOS I hand them my phone or tablet and tell them to play with it. If after a few minutes they look totally confused I recommend iOS. If they get in to the menus and apps and start asking decent questions I recommend Android. Just because we personally enjoy and support Android doesn’t mean iOS isn’t a viable solution for quite a few people.
And the N10 is a train wreck. There are a ton of h/w and QC issues along with it using a barren AOSP interface designed for a phone. 4.2 still has tons of issues that haven’t been resolved yet. The number of people unhappy with the N10 is the highest I’ve seen for an Android tablet to date which is saying something because Asus’ tablets are no walk in the park. The N4’s got more than its share of issues including a rather serious thermal throttling problem when under extended load. Just because a Google device is “pure” and/or says “Nexus” on it doesn’t automatically make it good.

If your sister has any intention of using the tablet for just playing "games" or watching stuff online, you're better off getting her an iPad. You won't have to field any questions because she won't have this bias that the device is hard to use.
If your sister is the kind of person who likes to tweak her devices, do digital art, maybe take notes, you can't lose with the Note 10.1.
If I were you, I'd just stick them with the iPad because I hate getting complaints based on people's preconceived notion on how hard Android devices are to use.

I wrote almost the same.
But...
The amount of technical knowledge required to use STOCK samsung/android is not much higher then with an Ipad and your CAN invest time to do advanced stuff, but you do not have to. One can live fine also without root, cwm, overclocking, side-loading, ROM-flashing. My 70 year old "non technical" mother lives fine with a stock samsung android phone. She does not need an Iphone.
Stock samsung/android is very similar to iOS. We all know why.... because Android/Samsung copied it from Apple.
Just like Windows is a copy of the Apple Macintosh. So you recommend your "non technical friends" to buy Macintosh (iMac as they call them now) and not a Windows pc?
The comparison iOS/Android is exactly the same as Macintosh/Windows.
I do not underestimate the intelligence of my friends/family.

As stated, this is for my younger sister who just got out of college.
She's considering a tablet and I have a Note II which I love. I've always been an android user, since the nexus one (which she uses since i got the galaxy nexus).
When I'm reading online, even android websites say that android tablets are not on par w/ the iPad. I see that it's about the apps, but I feel like all the big apps are on android too, so I'm just confused.
Has anyone here had significant experience w/ one of the "new" ipads (3rd or 4th) that can offer their thoughts?
The reason I'm considering the Note 10.1 is because the only other 10 inch android tablet that seems good is the transformer infinity and their forums are just RIDDLED with problems, which I don't see Note 10.1 users having. So it seems to be the most stable 10 inch tablet on android.

i have owned Note 10.1 for 5 months since it came to my country. screen is ****! real ****! u know it has the same screen as the first galaxy tab 10.1? YEAH! go for iPad 4! i will get the iPad 5 when it comes out, my first ever iOS device that i would own. i have used iPad 4 of my friend and it is really really great. my only grudge is that there is no file browser and everything has to be transferred through the iTunes. thats it! nothing else! go for iPad 4 it has the best screen and the best app support and the best of all, it has a great battery life and as a bonus a great resale value... hope u got my point

I gotta tell you, I've used Android and iOS for a long time. Still have an iPad 2 in the house and had an original iPad. I truly and honestly don't get why people continue to perpetuate this myth that Android is "hard to use" and "requires technical knowledge" as well as all the other comments about it that imply difficulty. I've actually found it to be the opposite. Android seems to just make sense to me. In iOS everything I try to do is a monumental pain in the ass. It seems even the most basic activities require going to all kinds of different places.
As for your sister, also consider "total cost of ownership" which goes way beyond the cost of the tablet itself. It seems to me that comparable iOS apps are generally more expensive...not to mention that if you get sucked into the iOS world you usually have to buy a tablet app and a phone app separately. Lots of Android apps work perfectly on a tablet and phone and look great so you really don't need 2 of the same app.
I would also suggest, unless she needs a stylus because she likes to draw or whatever, there are much less expensive and equally good options out there for far less money than the Note 10.1 or the iFad.

^^^ this. Replaced my wife's iphone 4 with a note 2. She asked me how to put her music on it. I told her to plug it into her laptop make a music folder on her sd card and drag her music into it. Her mouth dropped and said that's it?! I always had to work her iTunes for her and it annoyed the crap out of me. Glad she took my advice this time when she upgraded.

I haven't ever owned an Apple device, but it's definitely not "easier to use" when I tried my friends' phones. I mean, the way people talk about Android stuff like you have to be a techie to use it.. Sure, you COULD geek out to do a lot of other stuff, but it's completely unnecessary. The only reason I know a little bit about geeking out is because I found the XDA forums for my first Android tablet and I wanted to do more than just browsing.

Take the note 10, about the interface of apple and how it is easy, you could install a launcher that will make it like the ipad or even windows phone

With the Note 10.1 I was able to download a pdf, import it to SNote, fill out the pdf, exported the edited pdf to pdf and email it to the company that wanted me to print it out, write on it then scan it and after all that, email it back to them..
I'm not sure this can be done or not on an iPad for I have never owned an Apple product nor do I even want to own one
This is reason enough for me to say, purchase the Note 10.1
