Yes, you can do this with VPN.
Even with phone that have SIMs outside US. With VPN and Market Unlocker or ROM Toolbox.

You don't have to root your device to use VPN and USA IP. However, if you want to purchase the contents, you must have a credit card issued in USA.
As far as Market Unlocker and/or Root Toolbox are concerned they are for configuring the SIMs to USA market. They require rooting the device. But, I don't think that Nexus 10 has the ability for a SIM Card yet.

Hi all,
we have started a new project and want to use mobile devices with camera, gps, wifi and maybe umts. As a university (in Germany) we will buy the devices without any plan, just pure devices. As far as I understood, I will need to connect the device to a google account (may create a special dev one) through a data connection and activate it this way. Can I use wifi for this? Will this phone work at all without any sim card?
I have started looking into the Android development and like the API and of course programming in Java.
Maybe you can clarifiy some points for me with that.
Cheers,
Adam
If u buy adp1 phone and install hard spl then the adp 1.1 firmware i think it will be possible for u to get through(skip) the registration process then u can configure ur wi-fi settings & then login into google account via wi-fi this way u wont have to use a sim card...
I ll try installing adp 1.1 on my phone without sim & will tell u what happens since i dont have wi-fi i can only test that the phone works normally without sim only internet stuff will not work for me
but as u ll have wi fi u ll have internet...
Thanks for the reply. We still haven't ordered. But meanwhile I am convinced that G1 is the way to go
Will report here on any issues that I will come along!
Cheers,
Adam
No, G1 is definitely NOT the way to go. ADP1 is.
ADP1 is the same hardware (HTC Dream), but is open for developers.
Yeah, go ADP1. You can acquire them officially without a contract, unlike G1. Also, you can bypass gmail registration on ADP1 Android builds.
Great to see a place for Archos Gen 8 here. I would be willing to Paypal $100 to anyone who can get the blue tooth tethering between the Archos 101 and Blackberry working.
Thanks

If only I had a blackberry....
Seriously though, why not take your $100 and buy an Android phone to Wifi tether with? My DInc works great for tethering with my Archos 101!
in case this doesn't work
http://www.android-hilfe.de/archos-...er-das-handy-mit-dem-tablet-ins-internet.html
it just says pair your phone with the archos, setup bluetooth tethering via DUN and enter the apn server in the archos + maybe login info (i left that emtpy since my provider doens't require it)
but if you can spare 100bucks. why dont you buy those little portable wifi hotspots.
just put in a sim card and connect it via wifi to your archos.
they are about as big as a egg.
You can email me from the site and I will help you do it. I have it working on my iPad to my Verizon Blackberry Bold. The model Blackberry and network is important to know.
Blackberry bold 9700 here! I don't mind being a test dummy for someone, just shoot me a pm.
It is a known issue that the Archos Gen 8 cannot currently tether to the Blackberry's. Tethering to Iphone and android phones seems to work in most cases but there is an issue with Blackberrys. I have a company issued Blackberry and it would be much simplier to pay the extra $15 a month for the data plan then get another phone or hot spot device and pay for and carry that around along with my Blackberry. I have a model 9000 but am due for an upgrade so I can change to a different model if need be. We utilize AT&T as the carrier. There is a developer over on ArchosFans forum who is also trying to get some other parties to chip in for him to develop this app.
Thanks
Dan
Already working on this
I have had this same offer on the archosfans forum and had been exploring getting it working on my BB 9700 before selling it. It doesn't matter what network it is on. There are things missing in the config for Archos because of the difference in the way carriers set up in Europe as opposed to the US. I was most of the way there. I'm looking for $300 to do it and have $100 already. It also gives me some people to test the code.
PM me if interested.
so to sum it all up blackberries can't tether to android at the moment correct?
Has anyone tried using PdaNet on their blackberry?
my dad would appreciate this. luckily my hd2 with froyo tethers just fine

Why do I bother? Yes. It doesn't freaking work! When I do get a few more things out of the way I will surely be asking myself if this is actually more than an idle curiosity for people. Before I dumped my 9700 I tried every possible option which includes several available programs. Anything on BlackBerry App world and anything I could google. No joy! Read my post again. I know it can be made to work with 100% certainty.
PDAnet is $50. Apparently an actual developer willing to make it work isn't worth a PM or a cent. I'm really starting to wonder if it is worth my time.
but you can use the demo of pdanet for blackberry right? You hit enable yada yada yada paired it and it still didn't work over pdanet's bluetooth DUN?
Ide try but I'm waiting for someone to find a solution for one of these tablets so then i'll buy one
"but you can use the demo of pdanet for blackberry right? You hit enable yada yada yada paired it and it still didn't work over pdanet's bluetooth DUN?"
Just so everyone knows. There is currently no way to tether the blackberry to the Archos, none, nada no matter what software you try to use. That is why we need a programmer to write the code. We have one willing to do this (Sequiter) if people will PM him and let him know they will pay for it.
CDMA tether working on verizon . I rooted my archos 32 then i used some of the info from this site http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=18053 I got my phone to connect and i was online .. It's a bit of a pain and it will only work in root . I am hoping now that this info works and connects someone can make a small program that will make it easy to do ... My bb connected 1st show .. My wifes e815 that i keep around for FREE internet connected but drops after 30 secs I think there needs to be a username @vzw3g.com and password when tether to the e815 . I am looking into how to add this in the chat part now
Hope this helps .. I will be up all night geting 100% working ..
If you like to root your device I used this setup .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880321
Also it makes it easy to copy of the tether stuff using ADB !
opps !! when in rooted dev side .. after you reboot it removes the files ... So I gess i will need to make something that will copy the 3 files each time i need to tether .. e815 to work also just added user [email protected] and password vzw
I will have more info soon on it ..
Thanks
Folks,
I have a BB Tour and I might have that $100 solution today. I am waiting on a device today that should allow me to turn my BB into a wifi hotspot. It is very small/portable. It is from Cradlepoint and called the PHS300 personal wifi hotspot.
I will report back today if I get it to work!
As for why not get a new phone? I plan on it, but want to wait for new Android 4gLTE phones to hit the market, which are a few months away.
Folks,
I have a US Verizon Wireless Blackberry Tour 9630 that tethered with my A70 via Bluetooth right out of the box, and continues to do so reliably. I understand that there are many issues with tethering BB's with the Gen8's, but I just wanted to inject some facts here. It's not *all* Blackberrys.
There have been many threads over on archosfans.com forums about this issue. Hopefully, if Archos is paying any attention at all, they'll recognize that this is one of the top complaints that they're getting and address it with the next firmware release. I feel like I got really lucky that mine works. If it hadn't, I'd have put the A70 right back in the box and sent it back where I got it from.
Cradlepoint also works great I have the 350 ... And you can run the Cradlepoint off 4 AA batts with a Easy DIY plug and battery case .. It says it gets 3 - 3 1/2 hours .. I ran mine on batts today for the 1st time watched some videos and lite web .. It will still working after an hour or more ..
I tested it with 3 phones
e815
vx6800
BB
all work great ..
But i can also tether BT over command line Term .. But it is a pain in the A## to redo copy the files and stuff eatch time .. I kind of like the Cradlepoint better as you can connect upto 6 ofther wifi devices at the same time ..
CompFreek,
Thanks for confirming it will work. Other than liking to tweek now and again, I am more about ease than anything else. I am stoked about getting it. I was bummed when I received my package from Amazon on Monday and they sent me the wrong item. I will have the real deal tomorrow.
Would still like to know how you manage to do it via blue tooth method. What thread has the deets or can you walk me through it?
Thanks bud!
Post #14 on this page will get you started VIA BT .. It works good just a real pain i need to make some kind of auto copy .. this way when you reboot it will recopy the 3 files need for BT to work on CDMA .. As root !! I am still trying to put something better to gether for that setup .. I have an programer working on a small program for DUN /CDMA now that I know it works . I wish I knew a way to export the software out of the nokia 810 to android it has the best setup for tether and a great wizard for the setup to any network I tested so meny wireless CO on the n810 and that all work great ..
You will still love the Cradlepoint it's nice to have .. I tether my laptop and android a32 at the same time it's great ..
Blutooth Tethering Android Client.
The problem with the craddlepoint is to have to carry an extra thing with you....I've used the Aluratek ...and it was great...but straight connection would be nice.
People have had succes with CDMA versions of BB but just not GSM Version.
Computerfreek, would GSM version work with your method?
Also, I'm asking people who have the know how ...to conisider creatin a bluetooth Tethering Android client. The equivalent of the Archos Builtin client....that would work on not just Archos but also gtab and other tablets lacking this BT Tethering feature...
I would try a lot of these tablets if I knew I can BT Tether them to my phone.
The client would also just make BB Tethering possible....
A smart guy from China wrote the ibluever app to tether iphone, ipad, ipod touch to any other phone. His first version did not have BB support. His second version does have BB support and people have been using it like crazy. Well Android lack such client. PdaNet is not the equivalent ...I wrote them to try to get them to write something similar but got only a standard response from the support person. What we need is Client to sit on Android device like, the archos BT Tethering routine. Ibluever has been selling...and I believe if someone write this for Android..not just Archos only, he will sell it well...very well...and at the same time help the Android fans.
maybe i am not using the search tool properly nor posting this in app section.
But anyone know any way to do so?
my xperia x10 is half dead already i would like to 3g tether to tablet for 3g uses.
I search the market for app, none of them seem to support it. Is there another method? I am not too great with this sort of things
would like a detail guide or explanation.
thank you.
p.s: also i would like to ask, is it possible to use rocket mobile 3g fingers from rogers (i live in canada) to obtain 3g? sorry i am not technical so no idea how these things goes.
I don't know anything about rocket mobile, but I just downloaded Quick Wifi Hotspot from the market yesterday and it worked fine while at the restaurant. I left the network open and named it my name and connected via the tablet with no issues. It's also free and that is helpful Hopefully it's compatible with whichever rom/android version you are using. I have an HD2 with an Android 2.3 ROM based on C7 (I think that's all the requisite info).
I have cheap zip cricket cell phone. I do love crickets service here in my area.thou some say its lame elsewhere.
Anyway I rooted my cell installed wireless tether.and when I turn it on my tablet or my notebook will connect automatically and its great for most things even tried Netflix yesterday. Pared with crickets unlimited plan for 50.00 a month.
Set wireless tether to Mac address security lots of people will try to connect.to use your internet.some just do it automatic ..
thank you, the reason i posted this is because my x10 still run on grandpa software (at least not 1.6) android 2.1.
Acer have an instruction on how to enable portable wi-fi option on phone and ad-hoc but 2.1 doesn't have that option yet.
since my phone is already half dead (thank to SE's crappy product), i don't know if i can root it and install custom rom before it brick or dead completely.
i will check out that method thanks.
Since HC3.2 there is a working bluetooth pan profile implemented.
Android Smartphone:
( REQUIRES ROOT )
-> download wireless tether for root user from market
-> install and enable bluetooth in configuration
TAB:
-> goto bluetooth settings
-> after pairing there is a small icon on the right side
-> tab will use phones internet conection via bluetooth
advantages:
no extreme battery drain like with a wifi hotspot
stable, fast, like a charm <3
tested with i9000 (semaphore kernel) and a500 with thor's hc3.2 rom
I've gone to the market and searched for "wireless tether for root user". There is nothing with that name that shows up. I get a lot of results but nothing that I see that makes me think it is the program you are talking about. Could you give us more info on which app you are talking about?
Thanks.
I think its called wireless tether.. if you cant find it on the market they might not be allowed in your region. do a internet search they both have websites.. They are also free apps and someone might have the files they can post for you..
if you do not have root try pda-net beta..
just do a search on the market for tether app. and you will find many of them . from android rooted phone to tablet rooted wireless tether or barnicle is the two most popular..
from non rooted only choice is.. pda-net .
I have never tried wireless tether or barnicle over bluetooth or usb.
Good luck..
wireless tether is the only app which supports bluetooth pan.. pda-net beta dont work for me and is very strange because you have to setup a proxy everytime you want to use it..
im not allowed to post external links because im new ^^
go in market and search for: "wireless tether"
https://market.android.com/details?...lt#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImFuZHJvaWQudGV0aGVyIl0.
edit: link seems to work^^
Thanks Erica. If you can see it I should be able to also since I am also in Louisville. I'll look at some of the tether apps to see if they include bluetooth tethering and give one or more a try.
---------- Post added at 11:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:22 AM ----------
Thanks schlumpfchen. I went to the link and the app showed up. It doesn't show up if I do a search. The market also won't let me install it on my phone, a Samsung Captivate. It show as being compatible with my Acer a500 but not with my Captivate.
EDIT: I managed to find wireless tether on the web and downloaded the latest version, 3.1 Beta11. It installs as WIFI Tether and there are no bluetooth options for tethering. What version are you using?
EDIT AGAIN!: I removed that version and downloaded 2.07, the same version that is currently in the market. It installs as Wireless Tether and does have the bluetooth options. I do not get a good enough phone signal to test anything here at work but I will be trying it later. Thanks for all the help.

WOW im not sure why its not showing up unless at&t has somehow got your phone banned from that app. Is your phone stock . is the phone rooted..
this app is also available on amazon market. and there are a few other non google places. but you must be able to side load apps.. PRP Area here by the way add me .
My last phone was an samsung i9000 (rooted, euro) and i was able to download (germany) wireless tether...
on cm7 based roms the bluetooth tethering seemed not to work..
now i own a htc evo 3d and it isnt working too (kernel dependent)
Maybe it didn't show up because it wasn't compatible with my phone, at least according to the market. Either way, I found the correct version out on the net. I'm running team hacksungs ICS ROM with non market apps enabled so had no trouble installing it. I'll have to wait until outside the office to get a good enough signal to test it. Thanks to both of you.

AFAIK AT&T has explicitly requested Google to not allow installing any tethering apps on AT&T mobiles because AT&T does not allow tethering on their networks. AFAIK the same applies to Verizon, too, but I am not entirely certain of that as I'm not an American. (Thank god!)
That sure sounds like it could be the issue. I'm sure they don't want anyone tethering unless you use their app so they can get paid monthly for it.
3rd party apps implement "unofficial" tethering.. some preinstalled apps use another way for data exchange so you have to pay some extra fee for it^^

Another reason i DO not use one of the big cell carriers.. I say if you get out of your contract. ditch [email protected] .. take yourself to cricketusers.com and get your phone unlocked and flashed over to Cricket wireless. Then be done with it ..
they told me they DO not care as long as you do not abuse there services.I have at&t work phone . well when i was working and my cricket phone is better signal.. good luck... I so hate being told what to do by others.. if i pay for something i wish to use it how i want.
I went back to the market and looked at it again. It did not say the app was not compatible with my device, it said the app is not available on my carrier so it is restricted by AT&T. Thankfully google's code labs doesn't care who downloads the APK file.

I do not recommed doing that. AT&T monitors their network for tethering and if they notice you're doing it without using their app they can slap you with a really hefty extra fee.

I'm glad I live in Finland. Here the carriers EXPECT you to tether and they do not restrict it in any way or form. They also offer contracts in several forms, like e.g. you can surf with maximum network speed but you're limited to 20GB a month, or you can surf with 1MBit/s speed but can upload and download as much as you want, etc. etc.
Finland rocks.
accounts here at Verizon wireless is like this as well.. they change like 10.00 a month for tethering.. with unlimited full speed for x amount of data. then they will slow your data rate. I think eis similar to them all except sprint.. THOU Sprints service sucks in my area.. they offer a account for 70.00 a month TOTALLY UNLIMITED . You can tether as your home wireless modem to your whole network . unlimited data at there FULL FASTEST SPEEDS.. i Have a friend using this plan. its the only internet she has.She does use it constant as she is a network admin for large company with many locations.. before this plan she was spending 500 plus a month on her cell bill...
There are options . legal options but all add cost to your account..I however belive tethered or on the phone itself you should be able to use your data allowance tethered..
you can connect two androids with bluetooth in settings, create an interface by running pand -c mac-address-of-host, find out the ip of the host and set up the gateway on the client. dun can be achieved too but you have to set up profiles, an interface with rfcomm and run pppd device call isp. I get about 0.7mbps down with either which is why i use usb with my a500 and its awful wifi
I'm on Verizon and I use the SVTP app to tether between my a500 and my Galaxy Nexus with no problem. I don't believe it requires root
Perhaps someone can help me with something here...
I just started with tethering... and I am wondering.... what is the difference between wifi tether and bluetooth tether? I have both on my phone.
Are they both the same thing? Why have both?
Is bluetooth tether just for rooted phones? If so why have the option on android if just for rooted phones....
hey, i know this doesn't always work on every device. i'm running an LG Optimus 3d (p920/p925) with my a500. is their any tricks or tips to get this working?
thanks
I Bluetooth tether my Samsung Precedent with my A500... I use PDANET Tablet on my a500 and FoxFi on my phone... works great. both need to be rooted.

Guys, am thinnking of getting the A500 Wifi only (which is enough for me since i will mainly use it at home). But the thing is, i´ll be travelling to Africa soon for about 2 months and will like to get a prepaid SIM when i get there.
So i would like to know if a USB sim adapter or a surf stick works on the A500 (i have no intention of spending an additional 150€ to get the A501 which for me is a rip off)....
any assistance would be appreciated as i want to get a tablet next week....

This would mean an additional device, but how about sticking that SIM into an unlocked phone that can tether? Then you can use your phone as a hotspot to link your A500 with. I do that all the time when I'm on the go.

Modern android phones usually come with a pre-installed, carrier provided app for wired and wireless tethering. There are also a few tethering apps available on and off of the google play store. All tethering apps are not created equally so try a few different tethering apps and see which one works best for you.

There is an app called PPP Widget that allows USB 3g Stick drives. The 500 folks used to use it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.draisberghof.pppwidget&hl=en
Search these forums and you should find it. Also, it is on Play Store. It requires you enter the APN (access point name) which you can get from your provider. It's HC and ICS compatible if I remember correctly.
Also;
Needs root access (with "Superuser" or "SuperSU" app)
- Needs USB host
- Needs a powered USB hub (unless your device has plenty of power)
- Some devices (e.g. Samsung) need additional kernel drivers
- Your modem must provide serial ports and use the standard PPP protocol
