Hi all,
we have started a new project and want to use mobile devices with camera, gps, wifi and maybe umts. As a university (in Germany) we will buy the devices without any plan, just pure devices. As far as I understood, I will need to connect the device to a google account (may create a special dev one) through a data connection and activate it this way. Can I use wifi for this? Will this phone work at all without any sim card?
I have started looking into the Android development and like the API and of course programming in Java.
Maybe you can clarifiy some points for me with that.
Cheers,
Adam
If u buy adp1 phone and install hard spl then the adp 1.1 firmware i think it will be possible for u to get through(skip) the registration process then u can configure ur wi-fi settings & then login into google account via wi-fi this way u wont have to use a sim card...
I ll try installing adp 1.1 on my phone without sim & will tell u what happens since i dont have wi-fi i can only test that the phone works normally without sim only internet stuff will not work for me
but as u ll have wi fi u ll have internet...
Thanks for the reply. We still haven't ordered. But meanwhile I am convinced that G1 is the way to go
Will report here on any issues that I will come along!
Cheers,
Adam
No, G1 is definitely NOT the way to go. ADP1 is.
ADP1 is the same hardware (HTC Dream), but is open for developers.
Yeah, go ADP1. You can acquire them officially without a contract, unlike G1. Also, you can bypass gmail registration on ADP1 Android builds.

I have a T-Mobile US account with unlimited internet access. Currently I am using an HTC Touch Pro2. However, my buddy gave me his G1 to root and sell for him.
I installed RC29 and rebooted the phone. I put my sim card into the G1 so that I could get to the home screen and then begin the process of rooting the phone (i.e. download a telnet client, etc.). Problem is, I get to the Google login screen and it won't connect to the server. I've waited several hours and tried again, thinking maybe the server was down, but still have had no luck. Does anyone know why this would be? Is there another route that I can take (maybe putting a different version on the phone before rooting)?
I could really use the help of some knowledgeable person here.
Bob C.
NOTE: When I'm at the sign-in screen, I can touch the Menu button and get the APN Settings. I noticed one of them is for T-Mobile US, I just don't know what I need to put in each of the fields (if that even will help).
Also, prior to doing the downgrade, the G1 connected to the Google servers fine.
The actual message that I'm getting is, "There is a problem communicating with the Google servers".
I'm at a loss what to do.
i had some issues down grading to rc 29 i few weeks ago i updated to 1.5 and then used the one click root app. and also i was using my gfs old sidekick and data would go in and out all the time and keep getting odd text messages. so maybe ask for friend for his sim and see if that helps.

Is there another version other than rc29 that I can put on my micro sd card and then put it on the phone? It's only since downgrading to rc29 that I have no ability to get past the Google login screen. My sim card, that I am using in the G1, has an unlimited data plan.
I know that unless the phone has root I cannot flash different rom versions on it, but is there a dreaming.nbh file that I can put on the sd card that may provide me with the ability to connect to the Google servers once I install it on the phone (holding in the camera and power button)?
I would give you the link but i am on my phone at work. Search for jesusfreke's thread on how to activate a phone without a data plan. You can use that method to skip the activation screen.
Almost every time I've rooted a phone I've had issues connecting to Google servers. Keep trying. Its taken me 5 or more tries in the past.

I tried over 10 times and even reinstalled rc29. Nothing seems to help.
I also installed the SDK and when I try to start ADB Shell the device isn't found. I think that's because I'm stuck at the signin screen but don't know for sure.
It signed onto the Google server and internet with no problem until I copied the rc29 dreaming.nbh file to the root of the sd card and started the phone via camera/power. It all updates correctly, just can't connect.
It's weird because I used to own a G1 and did the rc29 install and rooted the phone, partitioned the SD card, etc. I have no idea why I'm having such a problem connecting to the Google server.
Any other suggestions?
If no devices pops for adb, then you need to make sure adb is installed correctly.

sorry for the quick information. and you can flash official roms you might want to try updating to 1.5 here is the link http://www.mediafire.com/?zmdyjz3y2zn idk but rc29 was giving me strange issue the last time i had it on my phone so try to avoid it as much as possible now.lol but of you get data on 1.5 download the one click root app and flash cm stable and put cm update on his phone so the next person who gets wont have to worry too much about this root stuff.
i am more than glad to give all the limited knowledge i have but i dont see any advantage of rooting a phone before you sell it just saying. thanks i hope this helps

Okay, I was able to flash 1.5 but I'm still unable to sign-in to the google servers. When I look at the APN settings there is no proxy set, no port set, no mms proxy or port set. I've been searching the forums for T-Mobile U.S. apn settings but can't find them anywhere. Any idea where I can find these. I figure that may be my problem.
Thanks again!
T-Mobile Technical Support's Comments
I have a question about not being able to get connected to Google servers. I still have been trying and trying to signin to my Google account on the G1 that my buddy gave me to sell. I currently have an HTC T-Mobile Touch Pro2 and have been trying to use my sim card in the G1. I phoned technical support today and they guy said that I can't connect because (even though I have an unlimited internet account) my account is setup for the TP2 internet package and not the Google/Android pacakge.
Does it really make a difference? If so, this could be what's causing my problem.
Hey guys, I'm new here but I have some (nooby) questions. I'm currently using an iphone to tether my laptop using web2go from t-mobile. I got a g1 from someone and of course rooted and started tinkering with it so that I could get web2go to work on the g1.
My question mainly is if I port over say another android based os, like the droid eris os that is available, does that change the way the phone interacts with t mobile? Or would t-mobile still recognize the internal imei and not care about the os and settings? I'm mainly asking if I can port over another os onto the g1 so I can tether like I currently do.
I know there will be the people who say just buy the more expensive plans, but if I could I would. I'm tethering with these phones because I can't afford real internet!
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Tmobile will recognize the IMEI although I have used the wireless and wifi tether's both and not had a problem on Tmo.
wait you use the 9.99 web2go? What settings do you use? Because whenever I try it has trouble "finding internet connection" or whatever. although technically the internet should still be coming through right? It's just being subverted by the g1's software that requires the higher tier services?
If its rooted, just use the wireless tether app. You can find the link here and put it on your SD card. Download Linda file manager from the market and use it to install the tether apk. From there, you will change your phones 3G or Edge signal into a wifi one that your laptop can use. You can use that on any rom, and it doesn't matter wether its droid eris or stock. The only thing that tmobile can see is your imei and your radio version, not the rom.
ok I will try this tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks for all the help
well I tried it real quick right now and I guess I forgot to make clear whats going on. When using the G1 as opposed to the iphone, the web2go subscription gets subverted. So while web2go works with a proxy on the iphone, on the G1 it does nothing.
I have the tools to tether except the G1 / T-mobile subvert the internet. I wanted to know if this was based on imei or on a software lock. Because I have heard of people using their G1's with web2go I'm assuming it's a software lock. So if I use a rom of an os that can run web2go, will I be able to use it? or will the imei lock it out?

there's only really two different os versions. well, more, but two popular ones. 1.6 (donut) and 2.1 (eclair). does the g1 have a data plan? does it even have 3g? you say you just got it, so if you don't have 3g, there's nothing to tether. as for it not working - if you're rooted it will work. there's also a app on the market (for now) called easy tether. just use the free version.
edit: read top post more clearly - no. you can't tether if you don't have 3g. if you can, it's new to me.
one more edit: you can do what my friend did - take an old satellite dish, hardwire it to a router, and just connect a lot of wire clothes hangers to the satellite's receptor or.. er... thingy and steal wifi for like miles. ha ha.
The thing is web2go is a data plan that can access unlimited 3g through a proxy. T mobile wants users to use their strict g1 data plan, so any other data plans get shut off. I'm wondering if it's imei or software. If its a software lock then I can just install a different rom I'm guessing.
When I tether with the same data plan on my iphone i get edge speeds, the main reason i want to get the g1 working is so i can get the 3g speeds
Ok, then try this. Go to the tmobile.com website, sign in using your number and password (or create an account). When you get to the screen that shows you a picture of your phone, select the option right under the picture that says not my phone, then select any other 3G capable, non android device. That should put you in the clear for a few hours/days/weeks/months, or whenever they decide to check your account.
Ok I tried it but it still didn't work. I'm starting to think it might be the g1 software which is helping shut off the Internet. I'm going to install a new rom and hopefully I'll be able to set the settings for t mobile. Will keep u guys posted
Anybody got t-zones working on this? i have Android 2.1/Sense2.1/2.2 on my TP2 via SD card and data works on all of them with my t-zones.
It will not work.
I was using T-Zones on my iPhone (which worked wonderfully). When I bought my Vibrant (at full price, even!), they killed my internet connection within 6 hours, pestering me with pop-ups to upgrade to the Android Plan. I could still load email and load Google.com in the browser. Trying to load pages (for example, typing in 'engadget dot com') by URL would result in the block, and Google Maps / Nav wouldn't work.
I popped the SIM back into the iPhone, and it worked just fine. The issue is that they register your IEMI number for the Vibrant, and note that the Android plan is 'required'. It isn't, they just want more money. T-Zones worked perfectly for the first six hours.
If you could get one without having them register your IEMI number (I don't know how you'd ever do that), it would work. Otherwise, your only other option for staying on T-Zones with Android is the Nexus One...an option I am still considering.
Hope that helps.

Most Android phones don't work on T-Zones and the Vibrant is no exception.
That's not accurate (unless you just didn't feel like explaining why?).
T-Mobile branded Android phones will not work, because they have an IEMI database. It has nothing to do with the phones being Android OS or not. It's a simple case of IEMI checks.
If you buy an unlocked, unbranded Android phone, you can keep your T-Zones and surf away.

The Google Ion will not work. There are multiple unbranded Android phones that will not work without an Android data plan. They DON'T do this for anything other than Android phones and USB modems.
damn.. thx for the helpful info.. im not sure if i should say this, but, is there a way to spoof Vibrant IEMI with my TP2 IEMI?
I just got my new unlocked HTC My touch 3g phone from J and R store...I put a SIM card from T-mobile from other cell phone in (prepay w/o data plan) and tried to test new device.
I cannot find a way pass first screen where I need to log in my Goggle account...it gives me a message that the SIM card does not have data plan...I thought that I will be able to get in the WI-FI menu to access the internet thru my home wireless connection and log it in that way..but no success.
My original intention was to have a phone with SIM w/o data plan and then use WI-FI for installing Apps, Games etc etc...Is that possible?...
I know that the answer is somewhere buried within these posts but I need to fix this fast ( my wife is all over me about phone not working)...if someone can give me some hints/links to the posts that can help me out I would really appreciated

Not trying to troll but this has been answered hundreds of times, mostly in threads just like this one. You cannot bypass the sign in screen on any stock myTouch/Magic ROM, only on most custom ones. If you press the menu button at the login screen, there should be an option to purchase a data day pass for $2. Do that to get in the phone, then root it and install a custom ROM so you don't have to worry about it later.

Thanks for help....I did resolve the issue....There wasn't an option to pay for data plan pass for day ( at least I did not see it in my 50+/- attempts to pass by the first screen)...what I did I went to T-mobile store and very nice young guy there helped me with store test SIM with data plan...it took 15 minutes to set up Google account and passwords etc etc and after that I put in my old prepaid SIM without data plan and phone worked like a charm. All phone functions worked and WI-FI capability allowed me to go online thru my home wireless network and to download several apps from market and to update OS to Android 2.21...etc etc

I would still root and install a new ROM. If you ever have to do a factory reset you'll have to sign in again. If you flash a new ROM, most add a "Skip" option to the login menu.

I did not know that...thanks for the hint.
I may consider it.
The only question is which ROM variant to install...

i would suggest that you try Gingerbread ROMS
Hey guys,
I have been successfully running my HTC Dream with Cyanogen mod 6.1 for a few months now and I love the fact that I can run 2.2.1 on this phone. Few problems I have encountered:
1) Name display not being supported even though in phone plan. (I know I have it because of my blackberry spare which was lying around).
2) Battery life SUCKS on this phone and dies in less than 8 hours sometimes after some phone calls and text messaging. Is there a lighter rom using the same kernel on the phone along with radio? I need more battery life on this phone.
3) Android market doesnt seem to work for me. I tried using wifi, someone elses sim card who has data on their plan, it just doesn't seem to connect to google servers to create and account. Anyone know why? Driving me nuts as I would like to explore the market a bit.

Not sure what you mean by 1) above
2) You can turn off 3G, GPS, and WiFi on the G1 and that will help a bit with battery. Then just turn those on when you want them.
3) Do you have an account in Settings - Accounts & sync settings? I believe you need an active Google account signed in to have the Android Market work.
Also, once you do some research, you can look into installing Ginger Yoshi on the G1 to get Android 2.3.4. It works pretty good.

1) I get a call, no name displayed just the phone number. No idea why.
2) Did all that hence why i am asking if there is a rom out there that uses less resourses while giving me access to at least 2.2

try moving to another rom, one option...
the call thing...did you import your contacts from sim/sd card after flashing new rom/radio or anything???
battery...only one option...get a new extension battery...u get 2300/2450/1700/2850 mAh's which would behave better than the original battery!!!

Most if not all of the current ROM has at least 2.3.4. Some might even have 3.x if the DEV updated them.

Do you have the data plan or are you using wifi?
If you have a data plan, did you have the 3G, EDGE, etc... icon show that you have data connection?
If no data plan and you connect via wifi, did you turn on the Wifi Connection and connected to a wifi network?
Sorry of these type of question, I do not mean to be rude. Just an observation that those thing might cause the problem.
