go to terminal emulator and tipe: mount | grep data you can see what type of file system, personally not use ext4 for recovery problems "E:/can't mount bla bla"
use the normal process to flash the new rom, if you want to install Epsylon builds you have to set 2ndboot from bootmenu.
if you're with the ext4 file system and want to use ext3 I think you have to flash sbf previously full wipe from stock recovery.

[Q] Steps to install CM7.2 stable from rooted stock Froyo 2.2.2 MB525 (green lens)

Currently Im using stock Froyo 2.2.2 on MB525 (green lens)
I wish to use CM7.2 stable but keep the ability to switch back to stock Froyo 2.2.2
[Also next I am going to try for CM9, CM10 and MIUI builds & wish to come back to stock 2.2.2]
I m going to take nandroid backup of my current stock Froyo 2.2.2 rom before flashing.
Also I have sbf link from this site sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordan/list.php
Now my doubts are
- as mentioned in many forums, they have asked to use fixed SBF to keep downgrade ability, so for CM7.2 stable where will I get this fixed SBF ?
But I think that I dont need to flash any SBF,
Below are steps I have so far thought after research
[PLEASE confirm them]
i.e. I should -
-1 Root my Defy
-2 Install CWM recovery or 2ndInit(I doubt it cant take nandroid backup plz correct)
-3 Reboot in recovery mode and take nandroid backup
-4 Next "wipe cache partition"
-5 Next "wipe data/factory reset"
-6 Then install CM7.2 ROM from zip from sdcard (or CM9/CM10/MIUI/etc)
-7 Then install gapps from zip from sdcard
-8 Finally Go Back and reboot.
-9 DONE
Now if I want to restore to stock Froyo 2.2.2
-1 Boot in recovery mode
-2 Choose restore option
-3 Select my previous nandroid backup from sdcard
-4 Reboot
-5 DONE
Are these steps correct ?
[I want to get sure coz I have this only phone]
Thanks for your paitence

just boot your ROM , plug your phone to the computer , make sure you have USB debugging ON
using ADB or Android Commander , push new recovery into </system/bootmenu>
you can get it from your custom rom ZIP <cm7 , cm9 , cm10 , nvm>

Unable to downgrade from cm10 to cm7

most probably you didn't convert back the data partition from ext4 to ext3 before installing CM7?
anyway, apparently the only solution for your condition at this moment is by reverting back to stock froyo sbf, root, install 2ndinit, then flash CM7

I'm facing the same issue. I know I now have to use RSDLite to get back to CM7 and hence changed my mind to use cm10. But now I'm facing another problem. When i try to restore my backup, it says "Error restoring /system" & "Cant mount /data". Please guide me get back my Defy to normal state. I don't have PC access due to which I cant presently flash the stock sbf.

To get to cm7 to cm10 WITHOUT sbf flashing, you need to convert data to ext3 from bootmenu and use the system wiper script for ext3 and finally flash cm7.
At your present stage if you cannot mount system from the recovery manually(from storage and mounts out something) then you will need to flash via rsd

[Q] Last version of CM10.1 for defy (mb525)

Hello,
I own a defy mb525 with CM7.2.0. I am not so happy with this version (bad 3g access; battery life very short)
So I decided to install the CM10.1.
On the develloper page I saw that the status has been updated on the 26.03. But if I look for my model (mb525), I can find only a version dated on the 120904.
Is there a newer version for the mb525 or is it only for the mb520 and mb526 ?
Regards

It should work for both. Same as latest builds of CM10.

First of all, none of you guys ever read the stickies. It is packed with good info.
Our phone has a locked bootloader, it is almost impossible to brick.
Download latest CM10 and then install.
Ive come across a newbi problem im on the link of the latest cm10 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702) and the file I try to flash wont install it gets aborted, I searched the forms for other cm10 and same issue file gets aborted.
If possible to be directed to the file I need to flash to cm10

out of curiousity, i restored my mb525 back to cm7 nightly 20111201 nandroid, which has cwm v5.0.3.2. i did not check the bootmenu version but it should be the same as yours. then, after formatting system/cache partitions, i flashed cm-10-20130918-nightly-mb526.zip, and it worked.
so i don't really know what's wrong with your phone, but i have a couple of suggestions for you to try. not that there's any logical explanations but try it anyway:
1. according to the error messages, you have the cm10 rom in the root folder of the sdcard. try creating a sub-folder called cm10 and copy the cm10 rom and the minimal gapps into it.
2. download the defy_fullwipe_ext4.zip and defy_fullwipe_ext3.zip ( for later use, when you want to revert back your rom) from here and put them in cm10 folder as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818520
3. reboot into recovery but don't do any format or wipe. instead flash the file defy_fullwipe_ext4.zip and this will format your partitions into the ext4 file system.
4. then flash the cm10 rom. if it installs sucessfully, then without any further wiping, nor flashing the minimal gapps, reboot the phone. (note that the os will reboot once more in the middle of booting up, seemingly having a bootloop problem. don't worry it's meant to do that, unless it rebooted more than once)
5. if it boots up sucessfully, do some basic set up first before rebooting back into recovery to flash the minimal gapps.
alternatively you could try flashing cm9.1 (ext3) to get a newer bootmenu and cwm versions before flashing cm10. no need to flash any gapps, just wipe system/cache partitions and flash the cm9.1 rom by itself. reboot into cm9.1, do basic set up. once it's ready reboot into recovery and do the above steps, starting from step 3, to flash cm10.
good luck.....
edit: did you get your cm10 rom from here:

I did try using that link but the files still would abort when flashing, also tried http://d-h.st/users/Quarx files it did the same thing
I followed your instruction but decided to goto cm 9 first I flashed the (ext3) file it installed and cm9.1 installed also installed twrp with no issues but when I was going through cm9 and its functions I couldent go on line a popup message (Unfortunately, brower has stopped) also I wasn't able to log on google play a pop up message (Unfortunately, com. google android.gb has stopped). so I got fed up and decided to goto cm10.1 so I first flashed with ext4.zip it installed and then tried to flash 10.1 file once again the file wouldn't install it gave me aborted file message again. I had no choice to reboot and I had to reinstall the factory file(brick). I am now back to where I started :silly: cm7 2.3.7 its been a hell of a weekend ........... ill give it another shot soon :fingers-crossed:

2 Serious problems

I have been a Samsung Galaxy Y user for more than a year. I have to say that this device is awesome. But.... I have later noticed 2 problems.
1) One day I tried to install Elegance ROM. I followed all steps very carefully and when the installation was done, I rebooted my phone. Unfortunately, my phone booted up again at Samsung stock firmware. I tried to enter recovery mode because I wanted to see what went wrong, but I was automatically redirected to CWM recovery. I tried once again to install Elegance ROM, and the result was the same. From that day, CWM is my default recovery. Why? How to fix this??? I can't access stock recovery and I also cannot install any custom ROMs. How to fix this?
2) Even my SD card is full with songs, photos and videos, the "Gallery" and "Music" apps don't read any file. Why? How to fix this?
P.S. I'm running stock 2.3.6 rooted.
Thanks for help.

You have a permanent cwm because you are using a custom kernel with a permanent cwm - probably was included in the rom zip
If you want stock recovery flash stock kernel (can be found in general section or flash hells fusion #50 from dev section and select option to flash stock kernel)
you would of remained on stock rom after flashing another rom because you didn't mount system in cwm before you flashed the zip
As for your other problem flash stock rom via odin as you have probably mucked something up from flashing zips incorrectly
So.... If I flash the stock kernel, will I be able to access stock recovery and flash CWM every time I want?
By the way, this mess with the files started when I changed my phone's SIM card. When I turned my ohine on again, I opened by mistake the "Galery" app. I noticed that no images were there. I also thought that the "music" might also had the same problem. And that's what happened. Which Odin version I will need?
Thanks again.

Yes stock kernel = stock recovery and you can flash a temporary cwm
there is no problems with a permanent cwm in custom kernels as you need cwm to flash roms
If you goto phone settings about phone it will show you your current baseband - for example mine is xxlf3
You can either download that stock rom firmware from dokys thread if there or any other from your country
Thanks everybody. You are all really helpful. I appreciate your help. But tell me, do I need to mount system before installing Elegance? And while I'm having a custom kernel installed, can I flash roms or I need the stock kernel?

Follow instructions on the op of the rom you want to flash
you must always mount system before flashing a zip else nothing will happen - you can flash zips all day and no changes would happen as it can't write to system as it's not mount!
As a general rule
wipe system
wipe data
wipe cache
mount system
mount data
mount cache
flash zip
format data (not always required just for some roms)
restart
you do not need to go back to stock to change rom
There are guides in general section - please read them first then you would understand the process
