UPDATE:
Sources are confirming the adoption of the linux platform or symbian platform. Its most probably not going to take massive shape this year, but by next year we will see a significant change.

I think HTC is afraid of MS doing again what they have done with the media players business: they used other hardware vendors to create market perception and later they went for their own product (Zune) with a different DRM and left the "PlaysForSure" clan with cold feet.
Now that Apple has its own branded phone Microsoft will have to have a MS branded phone soon and that could mean bye bye to HTC and the other vendors, so better jump ship before it's too late.
This announcement could also be only a warning to MS; at the moment HTC is practically the only company in the world that could throw a blow at Microsoft: without HTC the MS market share in smartphones would fall to a level of insignificance and they would have to rebuild their mobile phone market share from scratch.
Btw, is there any other OS than wm6 that we can port into right now like linux or something, I really love trying stuff like this out. Is there any way to put s60 v3 or even linux onto my trinity?

There's a Linux kernel out there somewhere - iPaQ 3900 was the last device I saw it working on eons ago...
AkshayGenius,
check Hermes forum, haret supports Trinity and semi-bootable kernel exists.
Doesn't boot completely on Hermes or Trinity so far.
hope some good UI os will come out soon!
i really dont wanna buy iphone..... unless HTC can come out better UI os...

Not really, in terms of Windows Mobile devices and WM5, you had the Pocket PC and Smartphone edition, the latter of which is on devices without touch screen e.g. HTC Meteor, Canary, Tanager etc.
I don't know if you mean "generally" as in all devices that are smartphonish on the market - you've got a lot that's not touch screen there too e.g. N95.

With "generally" I mean what you read in market researches. When you read about the Symbian market share that includes both S60 (no touchscreen) and UIQ (touchscreen) phones. Same goes for Windows Mobile.
The term "smartphone" was not invented by microsoft (did they ever invent anything? ) and it means "phone where you can install and use third party software beyond java applets" as opposed to "feature phone" where you can only use what is preinstalled in the phone (and only add Java applets).
So can anybody make an OS which I for ex can put on my p3600 for ex.

HTC has the best position in the market because of the Windows line. When they abandone the Windows platform, they give their market share to HP for example.
HTC also knows that Microsoft integrates everything from Office, Exchange, VOIP, Sharepoint to Live, etc.
Saying one thing and do some expirements with Linux, puts the pressure on Microsoft for nice deals (cheaper OS) for more HTC profit.
I haven't looked for other sources, but, a reading of the article hardly supports the assertion that HTC is "officially abandoning" WM. I mean, the ONLY quote just says they're "looking at" other OS's.
Talk about exaggeration.
i hope they turn to Linux, any exp coder will know that M$ is a piece of **** when it comes to resources, so look forward to faster, more stable phones. On the down side is the lack of app's supporting linux, but that said, the moment it becomes a reality, I'm there....

Indeed so! BSD is now a reality on the iPhone - the mind boggles at how the market could look in 12 months. Mind you, I still prefer my Trinity to the iPhone but am particularly peeved that HTC haven't seen fit to officlally release WM6 for it.

If HTC would evolve a bit and embrace the 3rd party app model present on the iPhone, enhance it a bit and add support for fetching data from hardware components like gps modules, not like java, but something like Adobe® AIR™ for mobile devices with offline capabilities, that would be great foe everybody, most of the apps we use are for improving/replacing the poorly designed windows mobile apps&interface, other can be fully replaced by web apps, codewallet for example, imagine it with offline and online modes, sync between both, and you have your passwords accessible on any device or desktop, multimedia editing is also possible using flash and server-side code, like picnik.com, so, it would be necessary to create new apps, but this new model would be far better than the current one, it would also eliminate the need for manual app updating, it would... heh, make cracking impossible, so, good for the devs for that and also for the easier&cheaper development(VS not needed, html+css+flash+javascript+rails[heh ]), it would also give HTC the freedom to create a sleek GUI(compiz and stuff?) since its easier to replace the linux gui than wmobile, no licensing fees from ms i think.

Funny you should say that. Have a look at this: http://www.wired.com/software/coolapps/news/2007/07/iphoney. In the article it mentions just this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded.
So Ubuntu mobile coming in October. As soon as a good GPS navigation software release for Ubuntu comes out - I'm trying it.
Hi guys,
Is it somehow possible to install an app that is exclusively available for 1GB devices on a Low-End Windows Phone with 512MB?
I really want to know why many apps are not available for Low-End devices and fear that this is just a strategy of Microsoft for selling more High-End Windows Phones. So I thought about buying a Huawei Ascend W1 to test this, but I'm not sure how and if it is possible.
First there is the easiest possibility with downloading the XAP from the store and installing it manually from the SD card. Does this work? This would be way to easy so I think it doesn't.
Lately I heard something about "cracking" Windows Phone 8 apps? Is this possible and does someone know how? There are many sites providing these XAPs on the internet. Would it work then? Is there any certificate that Microsoft provides with every downloaded app?
Second possibility would be using the Developer Tools from the SDK. This is the way how I used to install Skype on the Lumia 610. (and it worked perfectly!)
Is this still possible with a normale or "cracked" XAP-file?
Third idea: a Chinese hacker called reker recently accomplished to jailbreak a Huawei Ascend W1. Do you know if this allows us to install 1GB apps on it?
This is really not for piracy and I will/have bought/buy every app that I am going to test. According to the law in the country I live in, I am allowed to use applications on any other device as long as I legally bought any kind of license for it.
So basically I would be allowed play Halo Spartan Assault on the Xbox if I found a possibility to run it.
I just don't trust Microsoft anymore after I have seen that only apps by famous developer-studios publish apps exclusively for 1GB devices.
Thank's in advance.

These apps that come for 1 GB memory devices only are typically apps that are ported from other platforms and are improperly optimized for the current system.
Most apps, if coded correctly, shouldn't use more than 180 MB, which is what 512 MB devices allow for app consumption.
Theoretically, the limitation is put in place by some property in the WMAappManifest file for the application. If removed, the app should work properly on 512 MB devices, but you risk getting memory related crashes.
Most of the time, apps come in 1GB-only version and then are "ported" to support 512 MB as well, since the large majority of WP8 are 512 MB.
Then there's also the problem of screen resolution: high res devices will use more RAM to render stuff, which is why they all have 1 GB, or in the case of lumia 1020, 2GB.
thank's for your reply.
I have already talked to a developer who told me nearly the exact thing. He explained that these developers who are working for studios are under pressure, because these apps have to be published at time. also they want to keep the code as near to the source as possible. Therefore they don't optimize the apps properly. Still these apps should be able to run, because the RAM is mostly used for the cache of levels before starting. This means when less objects are cached, the processor has to work more, which leads to a higher power combustion.
Do you know if this WMAppManifest is saved in the XAP-file? Can I manipulate it somehow?
I have read something about it on MSDN, but I don't know where it is saved.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/jj681682(v=vs.105).aspx
I plan to buy a Low-End device and if it is bricked or somehow destroyed by overheating while trying this, I know, that Microsoft said the truth. The W1 isn't expensive and this is really worth testing.

the WMAappManifest is indeed located in the XAP, but you can not edit the XAP because they are encrypted by the marketplace.
If you wanna be safe and still get a high-endish phone, I suggest the lumia 820: has 1 GB of RAM and priced quite well.
The problem i see with 512 MB devices is that at some point microsoft will be forced to abandon them. I wouldn't be surprised if Windows Phone 9 will be unavailable for WP8 512 MB devices.
actually I have the Lumia 920 and I just want to test this if it works. I think it is worth trying, but I need to know how it is possible.
Maybe by jailbreaking the Huawei? There was a thread here on XDA.
So this means, manipulating isn't the way to do it. Any other ideas? What happens if I try to install it via SD card?
Is it somehow possible to "crack" the app without affecting this encryption?

As far as we know, the XAP is uncrackable at the moment, because it is compiled to native binaries. You will need decompile the thing back to MSIL, which isn't trivial. In the case of directx games (which represent the majority of 1GB-only apps) this gets even harder, even if you try installing via SD. But we have very skilled hackers working on it.
For a long time we thought WP8 was uncrackable, until the W1 jailbreak. The jailbreak will happen, sooner or latter, remember, WP8 doesn't even have one year in the wild.
I am not 100% sure how that guy who jailbroke the W1 manage to fool the XAP and marketplace checking.
You can try this: http://www.windowsmania.pl/poradnik...1gb-na-telefonach-z-512mb-nowy-poradnik-4504/

Thank you for your explanation.
That is why I consider buying the W1, but I haven't understood yet how the jailbreak works at all. But I must say that I haven't had much time to read the thread completely.
I will try what I can and I really believe in the hackers at XDA. They are really talented and making impossible things easy for every user.
Maybe he sideloaded the app somehow?

Hi!
I have few apps that are getting nice number of daily downloads on windows phone marketplace, but my main problem is that I'm having problem finding a decent ad-network for them. I'm currently using inneractive and the income is really bad. Which ad-network are you guys using on windows phone? I'm looking for a banner and interstitial provider.
Depends on where your traffic comes from. You wont find networks which offer good fill rates and revenues across geographies for Windows.
The best bet for you would be to try other aggregators like Smaato or Adiquity.
What about adMob? I though it works everywhere.
Some Options

I have been using Pubcenter and Inneractive ads. Though both are generating very low income I use them as there are not many options. Have you looked into adrotator? If you are developing for WP8 then you can take a look at admob; They recently launched WP8 beta SDK ( Not available in all countries).
Options include (Haven't tested them myself)
millennial media
inmobi
smaato
Hope this helps.
Did you find your ad network?
May I know which network did you tried, and how's the income?
We are trying to find a decent network to publish our ads, but... it's the same problem, we don't know which is popular in developers.

It takes time for any app to achieve or to gain user credibility, you've to have patience for that. There are ad networks who gives right platform to app. Nowadays AdIquity is popular, you can try them or else you can try Smaato.

Hi Sohan
I don't use any SDK at this moment. I am seeking a ad network that can work on CPC or CPI(prefer).
And I need to monitor the click with our own statistics.
I went through inMobi console yesterday
It's the best for Advertiser to be honest. We don't need to mail someone to ask around, and we can put our own trace url.
But as a developer, I don't see many apps using inMobi on WP.
And as a user, all ads in app I noticed was AdDuplex.
Their homepage was filled with Android and iPhone examples.
So I have no idea how many people seriously using this.
Can you name a few apps using your service?

Looking for extra revenues of to launch CPC/CPI campaigns for Windows Phone ?
You should try AdDeals Ad Network for Windows Phone
It provides:
* Free cross-promotion for developers (1:1)
* Additional revenues (that's not a banner ad network so any developer using banners can include AdDeals!)
* Quality ads, quality content for your users
And for advertisers:
* You can run CPC / CPI campaigns by yourself easily.
* Target countries and more

Great. I am currently have apps in Android Play store only. I am thinking to publish in Windows store but afraid the ROI is very bad and not many users will download.
and for V4C adds? what would you recommend?
Hi,
I’ve had a diary app called the “TASP Business Diary” developed for both the iPad and Android tablet platforms.
For Apple, I have a paid version as well as a free (ad supported) version so users can try before they buy.
For Android, I have a paid version and am wondering if I should create a free (ad supported) version, considering the fact that users can uninstall a paid app within 15 minutes to get an automatic refund.
The argument for a free version is that there is no hesitation from users to install and try it.
The arguments against a free version is that they seem to generate very little revenue, and users may continue using the free version without every upgrading to the paid version.
Has anyone had any experience releasing free versions of apps when they already have a paid version out there? Or any other advice for me on how to revenues from the products as they’re my first.
Many thanks and happy new year
Ana
