I'm following the instructions on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993331 with Nexus 4; posting here since they won't let me post in that thread.
After step 7, fastboot boot recovery.img, I get into ClockworkMod , and I can see and navigate the items (volume up/down), but hitting the power button does NOT select the item. This device only has 3 buttons, so how do I select an actual item?
Another issue is that if I force reboot it (hold down power for 10s) it gets stuck at the Nexus (big X) logo. Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34232882&postcount=107
the suggestions solution is to call fastboot boot cwm-recovery-mako.img, but where can I find that img file? Also, how do I "clear cache + dalvik cache"?
At this point my brand new N4 is not really functional, so any kind of help is appreciated!
Thanks a lot!!!
You have tried touching the screen, right?

Also there is an official CWM recovery now, so use that.

Yes, I have tried that... As far as I know I am using the official CWM recovery (should I use the Download Touch Recovery version?)
Thanks.

Using the "touch" version of CWM allowed me to select the menu items. Wiping the cached solved the problem and now I'm back in the phone... Thanks!!!

In the acre recovery opening page it shows the thor2002 and the Stock USA 1.141.07 Gen 1
If I have the same version as this on my tablet now and I want to install a different ROM do I still need to backup my current Rom or will the one that came with Acer Recovery be fine to use.
Also I watched the video on using the Recovery start up POWER + Volume- and how to navigate this menu. What it didn't cover is a minor thing. How do you navigate up and down in this menu which button do I use to do this.
I know you use the power button to select the option but no mention on what to navigate with.

Volume button is used to navigate the menu.
Thank you
I thought it must be that but wanted to make sure.

you need to make a backup of your ROM using CWM (boot, system, and flexrom at the very least). You don't really need a backup of your stock recovery, since it's included in the installer app already. But the installer app does not include the whole ROM.
Thank you all for the help.
I appreciate it.

Factory default reset
Have you tried doing a factory reset? Use a paperclip or other small object to press the button that is inside the little hole to the left of the USB port. This should reset the tablet back to defaults and remove the password.
This post shows more detail.

You can try loading a signed stock ROM through stock recovery.
You just copy the update.zip to a SD card and hold Power and -Vol buttons until it says "booting recovery kernel image".
i have acer iconia tab a500 blocked with a password
in recovery boot i don't have a menu to wipe data/factory reset
please help to remove password or flash for remove the password with sd card.
1. Boot to cwm recovery
2. Select 'Backup & Restore'
3. Select 'Toggle backup and restore....'
4. Check on-screen 'Backup and Restore /data/media: Enabled
5. Go back to main menu.
6. Select 'Wipe Menu'
7. Select 'Wipe data

A stock Iconia does not have CWM installed. So how is this supposed to help him?
Just do the reset as suggested with a paper clip. It wipes out everything and returns it to stock. There is a reason the button is hidden as it is very dangerous to your data.

Check if your volume keys are working in clockworkmod, and if they are, flash a ROM of your choice.
Swyped from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

If your volume keys do not work, download the image of a touchscreen-based recovery and flash it using flash_image in ADB or Terminal. (flash_image recovery <file-name>
You can reboot to recovery if your ROM supports that as an option in the reboot menu, or through adb command (reboot recovery)
can u suggest a touch screen recovery program ?

Did you do anything to the phone that might of caused it to stop working? On mine i opened it and saw that the button on the ribbon that's pressed by the key was moved and it wasn't pressing it (Had to put a tiny piece of foil and tape). When you press it do you feel it kind of click or it doesn't feel like its pressing the button?
the buttons seems to be pressing down ok im just looking everywhere to try a find a solution
I think I bricked my brand new Nexus 4 I was trying to follow the rooting directions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993331
I was using the Clokcworkmod and I was unable to see the super su folder in the sd connection. and i rebooted it anyways. Now after reboot the phone doesnt start up It just hangs at the X symbol at the startup.
As suggested, I also tried to reboot recovery, which also hangs
I'm super new to this, anybody, please help

Just start again, sometimes it messes up, but you generally just start again with flashing the clockworkmod. Make sure the download wasnt corrupted by doanloading everything again though, although ignore the bit about adb rboot bootloader, you need to start the phone manually by use power + volume-down key combination to get into bootloader when its powered off and continue from point 5.
Thanks, I will give that a try

Relac, its actually pretty hard to completely bust these things. Dont quote me on that though lol
Don't freak out. I'm sure you're fine.
Unlocking the bootloader on my N10 caused me to hang at the X. Wiping data fixed it for me. Try the following:
1. Reboot into Fast Boot
2. Select Recovery using volume rocker. Hit power to select. You'll get the android mascot with the red exclamation point.
4. Press Power and Volume Up at the same time.
5. Choose to wipe all data. Confirm the selection.
6. Reboot.

So I didn't originally flash the recovery image, just booted into it. So I tried that again, but there is nowhere to find the SU_BusyBox_Pack.zip. I tried the sideload method, but ADB can't find my device any more. It shows nothing when I do adb devices.
what else can I try ?
Were you able to try wiping data through the stock recovery?

I got stuck after just booting into recovery as well and immediately exit. Just use the volume key and change it until you see recovery, without going into it, I just fastboot flash recovery recovery.img from pc, then factory reset.

Hey guys,
i having trouble to get the recovery MENU open in Recovery Mode.
I shutdown the nexus, press power and both volume buttons -> fastboot, then go "into recovery".
But now i only get the green android with a "Kein Befehl" (means "No Command" oder something like that.)
I cant get the menu show up (the blue you can factory reset or clean cache, reboot etc).
After some trying with the buttons, the nexus reboot itself again normally.
Whats wrong? Did Google change here something?
It's usually volume up and power to get the menu but seeing as I'm using CWM I can't remember - not used the stock recovery in years!
It's still power then quickly tap volume up to access the menu

use this, and choose boot into recovery... easiest way, at least if direct way from bootloader doesn't work...
maybe u should reflash your recovery if the direct way isn't working
Maybe you haven't installed correctly the recovery..
Do a factory reset and then try again..
I had the same problem and I solved with this steps..
