Well, yesterday it happened. I had my N7 in my back pocket (as I usually do when walking the short distances to the corner store and back). I ended up tripping over a toy my nephew left on the porch, and landed on my butt (and the tablet), The screen is shattered and will no longer respond to touch.
I cannot return it, so I have instead opted to fix it myself. However, the cheapest price I've found so far for the Glass/Digitzer is around $160.00! Add shipping and the cost of the tools and it is nearly $200!
I find it utterly insane that a single piece of the tablet costs nearly as much as it would to just buy a new one... which I may end up having to do unless I can find the part for less.
Any ideas? I figured I would ask you fine people if you know of any better pricing or not before I make my decision.
My suggestion would be to buy a new one and part out the old one on EBay.
Price you get for the parts should more than cover your new one, and pretty much everything - like speakers and battery - just unplug.
You will even find buyers for the case parts. If it is a 16GB unit, I bet a number of 8GB owners would like to buy the motherboard.
The profit margin on the devices is very thin so its not surprising that parts seem so expensive. Cost is recouped through advertising, data mining, and online content.
This is nothing new. Broken screens on laptops are also close to the cost of a new laptop. Many consumer electronic are not worth fixing.

I've decided that I'm going to go out and buy a new one. However, I'm a bit torn on whether or not I should sell the broken one, or just hold onto it for later.
I can definitely make a good bit of my money back by "parting" it out. However, I think it would be fun to have a "test tablet" around to try out some physical mods I have in mind... and I could always fix it later when prices come down a bit.
I bought a 32gb when it came out, I still have my 16 its great for testing roms and kernels and stuff on before flashing things on my 32.
Obviously you couldn't do that with a broken screen but the philosophy applies to physical mods....
What did you have in mind?

For now, just get a USB-OTG adapter and use a mouse with the device (You didn't say if the LCD was broken as well).
You can get a USB finger mouse that fits on your finger andmove the cursor around that way.
Yes, no more multitouch but hey - at least you've got a backup tablet.
As for the touch glass surface, it's bonded/glued to the LCD around the outside of the LCD frame. The best way to separate the LCD
from the glass would be to carefully disassemble the LCD assembly by popping up the back of the LCD frame and removing the guts, then carefully using a hot wire (of about 30guage or thinner) to cut the front of the LCD frame from the glass.
Re-assemble the LCD in the metal frame afterwards - it should just snap together.

My kids were abusing my iconia and that has resulted into a crack appearing on one side of screen (left side) which extends from top to bottom. Though screen is working normally at the present.
Will it work like that continuously or it will stop functioning in future?
Can i replace it easily? and how much would it cost?

The glass and the digitizer are glued together so hard that you cannot separate them, that means that both of them needs to get replaced. I don't know how expensive the digitizers are or where to get them, but they're not cheap, that I know.
i have seen them on ebay going for 80.00 and up to 200.00.acer will fix it for you for 195.95. this is there standard service charge for nearly any hardware repair on laptop/ tablet devices..
you just have to keep looking
Kids and expensive delicate touch devices are not compatible..
It's like a crack on a car windshield; it will inevitably expand to the whole screen. I wouldn't try to fix it. Use it or as long as you can while looking for a year-end sale on another one. The A500 and Tosh Thrive were selling for $200 during Black Friday, the Asus TF was for $250. There'll be more sales before the year is out.
If you want to recoup some of the money, open it up and disassemble the components, then hock the parts on eBay. The LCD subassembly is obviously in most demand, but all the rest are worth something.
For the kiddies, get a Nook Color and put CM7 on it. Robust construction, and it's currently $129.

Okay so it's been less than a f***ing week and I've managed to crack my Nexus 7 32GB 3G. Hell yeah. Fell on a bathroom ceramic tile from 4 foot high and the corner bit chipped off. The entire touch screen works though, it's just the corner bit cracked.
SO ANYWAYS! I have a few questions for those smart guys out there that know about displays.
First of all, I've found out from the internet, that because the LCD and the Digitiser are glued together, I'd need to buy them together. Otherwise known as a Nexus 7 Display Assembly.
Few questions:
1) If I buy a display assembly from ebay for example, will it be of less quality than ASUS's original screen, or will it probably just be a part from ASUS anyways?
2) If I do buy this display assembly, will it still have the same number of Pixels as the original screen?
3) Will it have the same brightness, same touch responsiveness, same all that **** as the original screen?
If not, I may consider just repairing directly from ASUS, so...
4) How much does it cost in pounds(£) to repair the N7 Screen all in, taking into account my shipping fees from the UK?
Seriously need someone who has any experience of this whatsoever

I JUST replaced the screen on my nexus. I bought the display assembly from powerbookmedic.com, and the tools I needed from iFixit.com. All in all, it cost me around $200 in the States. The repair process was pretty easy, and the screen looks and functions exactly the same as the original screen. My only suggestion would be to make sure you have some good adhesive. I have a little screen lift now because the adhesive lost its traction when I took the cracked screen off the upper casing. Good luck!

Huh? Adhesive? We have to add adhesive? I thought adhesive was only to the digitiser + the lcd screen? I thought that it already comes assembled when you buy the part, because apparently you have to buy it together? If it isn't used for digitiser/lcd screen, then what did you use adhesive for?
The digitizer is indeed fused to the glass, but the silver ring you see around your screen is also fixed to the glass with adhesive, and that part doesn't come with the LCD/digitizer assembly.
The screen affixed itself to this upper casing on mine okay, but I do have about a millimeter or so of screen lift now which I didn't have before.

The best way to attach the new display is to use very thin two sided tape. you cut it in 1/8 inch strips. Apple it all the way around the bezel. then with a sharp knife run it along the inside bezel. Pay close attention to the thin bezel area on the left side ({where screen lift occurs) To be sure you do have it perfect in that area.. Ithe screen face down on cloth . Push the bezel onto the sticky tape (with film removed of course.. Turn device over and put back together.. LEAVING OUT THE TWO CENTER SCREWS or leave then very loose on the left side.(if you have a newer model of nexus these screws will be gone anyway). I have done many phone /tablet screens . If you can get it apart and back together you can replace the screen assembly..
No real need to send it to someone else nexus is easy to dissemble reassemble
Good Luck... Buy a full working 8 gb from ebay for 150.00 might be your best best....
Any clue How to detach the broken glass\digitazer\lcd from this aluminiun bezel?
I recently broke my screen as well. I saw on ebay only 2 options. First option is a screen only for about $50 which doesn't look like it will do anything for me. You the second option is a digitizer for around $300. $300 clearly exceeds the cost of a brand new device so that wouldn't make any sense at all. Even $200 doesn't make sense as I can buy a 8gb device for that and swap screens. I have the 16gb model. Does anyone have any cheaper sources for screen/digitizer that make economic sense?

Actually $179 for an entire new (refurbished) nexus 7 with 16gb more storage than mine is a very tempting option. I may choose to do that vs spending almost the same to import a screen from China, have to go through the hassle of installing it myself and hopefully do it properly and have it look clean and factory. If I did that then I could still hang on to my broken one in hopes that in 6 months or so the screen prices might drop to a more reasonable price.

So my Nexus 7 has hard bricked itself and I don't think I'll be able to get a free RMA from Asus because the bootloader was unlocked.
I was considering taking it apart some and selling each part individually to see if I recovery some of the money I spent on it.
My questions are:
Anybody know of how to take it apart? How much money could I make off of each part (battery, display, motherboard, etc). What would be the best way to take it apart to ensure that I can get the most out of the device and ensure the parts don't get damaged? What's a good way to sell these parts?

Watch a few eBay "for parts" auctions for a while... that will give you a sense of how much stuff is selling for.
Also - given that the most common problem is broken/cracked screens, and the LCD+digitizer are arguably the most valuable components in the device, it might be possible to find a functional device with a broken screen for relatively cheap: maybe you will decide to harvest the motherboard, put it in your device and you are back in business.
Then re-sell the other bits to get a little coin back - there are no doubt folks that want the USB sub-board because they have a damaged USB port or blown speakers. Probably no shortage of people that want a replacement battery, too.

PS if you do decide to "part it out" sell the tablet frame, LCD and Digitizer as one piece rather than trying to pry apart stuff that is glued together - let your buyer break stuff rather than doing it yourself before the sale.
So I cracked my screen juggling to many things in my hands(phone energy drink, keys, ecig etc) tablet slipped right out of my hand. Funny thing is I am not even upset. I am usually OCD about cracks, I have $500 balance on this via T-Mobile EIP, got rid of jump so I am essentially screwed. Touch screen is fully working so it's still usable. I wonder how much Samsung will charge me to send it in for repair. May just sell it and make put it towards EIP plus make big payments. Idk. It really sucks but what can you do. Glass breaks, Samsung build quality sucks and so much more important things in life to worry about. Maybe this is a sign I should get the nexus 9. After all HTC is known for build quality and even though it's not likely going to be aluminum due to Nexus wireless charging I have a sneaking suspicion it will be miles ahead of anything Samsung produce anytime soon.

Yeah I am too clumsy for self repair. Samsung quoted me 260 I believe. Really think I will wait to see what Nexus 9 brings to the table and price range. I wish Samsung would release a successor to the note 8.0 so far I have not read anything. Seems Samsung is mostly focused on their "tab" series

Yep, the screen is the most expensive in tablet or cell phone. Currently Ebay is selling $200 for the screen assembly, $140 for Hong Kong made and you have to do it yourself. The price for the note 10.1 2014 is dropping fast so it's not worth to repair. Save your money for the Nexus 9 would be the right choice....

Not worth paying 260 ... thats crazy. I'd jist keep using it as its only on the corner and see what your options are with the newer tablets and then either try give it a go yasel or just sell it on ebay or do what my brother did with his cracked Blackberry Tablet ... he put on a screen protector on (mind you there was no glass or sharp bits anyway) and gave it to his 3 year old kid to play games with haha.
I will probably put a screen protector the cracks spread through the whole screen. The thing that sucks is that it's the spen why I bought this bloody screen and using spen on cracked screen is not ideal. Otherwise I would never buy Samsung. I hate touchwiz(unless on note) and I hate even more how cheap Samsung products feel(they got better and the note 4 did have some praise in early review)
Personally I think on the original note they gave it a more premium build with crappy specs where as on this bad boy they cut cost and gave it the best specs(at that time) the og Note 10.1 I feel had an all round better build to it

Well if you tried a DIY job then I think if you buy a digitizer it will cost you about $50 and then probs $30 for delivery. So about $100 for labour isnt bad considering its a bigger job than I initally thought tbh.
Reading more and more it does seem like Samsung have made it impossible for an average joe to fix. And then atleast you have a tablet back.
I guess only you really know if its worth the cost for you or not. If I were you I'd wait and see what stuff is coming up and then put the $190 towards a newer tablet.

Yeah kinda what I am thinking, what sucks is I have a $500 left on this. I think I may go with it. I don't care about tablet specs as much as phones. I would have kept the original note 10.1 if it the software didn't such so bad. I figure if something did come around that is better I would get more money back if the screen is not cracked. Making the $200 lost almost a wash. I know no matter what I am getting an Otterbox. I know you drop tablets they break but I believe if was more durable the damage would be far less
Yeah cases do provide some protection for falls not sure how much protection my Official BookCover provides. What case did you have on it ... Can't tell what type of case it is from the picture you uploaded.
Its a generic case from eBay. I actually hated it, somehow when it was in the case I often couldn't use external buttons like power, home, or the menu/back. Pie solved the problem.
Looked on eBay and it doesn't look like a cracked note would get me much money so repair it is!
Put a screen protector on and although it's more usable smooth glass surface it actually looks worst. The glass shards and uneveness causes bubbles worst is that I had to keep reapplying the screen protector because of stupid glass shards causing dust and dirt make it's way inside
Oooooh I didnt realise that the cracks went along the entire screen, having the screen protector on really showed the extent of the damage blimey its bad. Yeah thats in no usable condition tbh I genuinly thought it was just the top right hand side that was damaged, aye a guess $190 to have your tablet back isnt too bad.

Well today I bought an otterbox until I can afford $ to get it repaired. Comes with a screen protector which illuminates air bubbles plus I feel like if it drops it won't crack even more or at least will crack less. When the screen is lit up either with color or black its not noticeable, but when the screen is white it's an absolute eye sore. Does add significant weight. Add bulk but nothing unreasonable.

It's not an impossible or an expensive repair, really. Just takes a bit of patience to get it apart and back together, so as not to cause more damage than ya started with!

The touchscreen now just doesn't work at all.
So my question was, do you reckon i should buy one of those screen repair kits, or something similar and attempt to fix the phone or go for an upgrade and try my luck finding a invite ticket and buying a OnePlus One? Just wondering what your opinions are.
Im stuck now with an iPhone 3gs! Tough times indeed.

Replacing the screen assembly is actually relatively easy on the Nexus 4. Note that I said screen assembly, and not the digitizer. If you don't know, the glass "screen" is called the digitizer, which is glued to the LCD behind it. Now, it could be that all that actually needs replacing is the digitizer, but this is not an easy task, requires some specialist equipment, and you're still likely to screw it up. So I highly recommend going with the screen assembly, which is both the LCD and digitizer already ready to go.
You can get a new screen assembly off eBay. There are 2 different ways. One is just the screen assembly. It's cheaper, $45, but it requires that you remove the old one from the bezel, which can be a PITA. The other way is the full front assembly, which means you're getting the screen assembly already glued in to a brand new bezel. $60, a lot less hassle, and your entire front will be new and shiny and ding/scratch free again. Obviously, this is the choice I'd recommend (I've done it myself).
Might as well get a new battery while you're at it, for $20. At this point in its life, you've likely charged your phone several hundreds of times. Li-ion batteries will lose upwards of 20% of their original capacity after ~500 "cycles".
ifixit.com has some great tear-down photos, and there's a number of guides on youtube. It might sound a bit daunting, but it's a lot easier than you might think, at least with this phone.
I can't tell you whether you should just get a new phone or not - I don't know your situation, finances, urges, etc. But I will say that for a mere $80 you will practically have a new Nexus 4. Stick around, learn how to flash custom ROMs and kernels (if you don't already), and you very much will have a new phone. Or a great back-up to your new one.

If you need any assistance with dis/reassembly, I'm more than happy to help. I've had my Nexus 4 apart probably a few dozen times. Most important thing is to go slowly. Don't lose screws, and don't lose the tiny rubber gasket that's part off the proximity/ambient light sensor module. If, after reassembly, your screen goes black when making a call (and it's not against your ear), take it apart again and put the rubber gasket in backwards.
I had same problem. Please not that ebay china sellers are not selling oem displays and there are huge difference in terms of quality. I myself bought original oem LG from Germany, but it costed 100$
