My kids were abusing my iconia and that has resulted into a crack appearing on one side of screen (left side) which extends from top to bottom. Though screen is working normally at the present.
Will it work like that continuously or it will stop functioning in future?
Can i replace it easily? and how much would it cost?
I believe if you search around here, someone has already posted a DIY article on replacing the screen. If not, I know someone has posted a repair manual for this thing in here as well.
As for the long term effects of having a cracked screen, I dunno...

The glass and the digitizer are glued together so hard that you cannot separate them, that means that both of them needs to get replaced. I don't know how expensive the digitizers are or where to get them, but they're not cheap, that I know.
i have seen them on ebay going for 80.00 and up to 200.00.acer will fix it for you for 195.95. this is there standard service charge for nearly any hardware repair on laptop/ tablet devices..
you just have to keep looking
Kids and expensive delicate touch devices are not compatible..
It's like a crack on a car windshield; it will inevitably expand to the whole screen. I wouldn't try to fix it. Use it or as long as you can while looking for a year-end sale on another one. The A500 and Tosh Thrive were selling for $200 during Black Friday, the Asus TF was for $250. There'll be more sales before the year is out.
If you want to recoup some of the money, open it up and disassemble the components, then hock the parts on eBay. The LCD subassembly is obviously in most demand, but all the rest are worth something.
For the kiddies, get a Nook Color and put CM7 on it. Robust construction, and it's currently $129.
Thanks to all of you for the feedback. yeah sure kids are not compatible with these things but then they like them so much, touch screen gives them a direct and personal feeling. Anyway thanks again.

Hey fellas... I think this is my first post here. Been here so long I don't even remember.
Well I have a K-JAM... I made a mistake of not buying a screen protector at the shop. It's been about 3 months now and depite very careful usage, there are quite a few scratches on the screen. I was wondering how much it would cost to replace it.
Do I have to replace the entire screen or is there some kind of sheath over it that can be replaced hence minimizing the cost?
Any inputs would be appreciated.
Thanks
Do a search on Ebay, there's a few listed there. Seems that just the touchscreen (top part, the one you probably want) is around $35, touchscreen+LCD is around $130.
I did a screen replacement on my previous phone, a SonyEricsson P800. The replacement itself was fairly easy (I replaced both touchscreen+LCD since the LCD was busted), but the touchscreen and LCD on that one were glued together forming one solid piece. Although seperate touchscreens were available for the P800 as well, there would've been no way for me to seperate it from the LCD without breaking the latter. It might be the same case for the K-Jam, forcing you to opt for the more expensive option. You'll just have to check first.
Also, have a look at the Service manual for more information, also about (dis-)assembling the K-Jam.
Goodluck!
Depending upon the depth of scratch, have you tried a repair fluid and polisher?
There is a website in the UK www.mobilefun.co.uk that sell just a solution! No pun intended. For a few pounds it might be worth a try (or dollars depending on where you buy!)
Wow... thats fantastic... I hope it works... the Repair fluid that is.
@Juicey... I cheked it up.... but like most screens, this one seems to have the touchscreen sheath glued hard to it. So i guess that's out of the question.
@BMS_Ian... has anybody around here actually had any luck with these repair fluids?
Well, today is a sad day My acer Iconia A500 is now in a tablet coma.
The screen is broken, not the glass (Oddly) just the LCD panel. I thought I'd ask you guys if it was worth getting fixed or trying to fix it myself. (I assume that parts are hard, if not impossible to order)
You guys have any recommendations?
It still boots? If so consider donating it to a dev. Or sell it on ebay. You can probably find a screen that'd fit and match specs but it's way beyond my skill level to replace one.
Why not send it to them? You have 1 year Parts & Labor as outlined in the warranty agreement.
Screen broken as I looks funny.or physically cracked.I had a issue with the video connector took it apart and pushed it in properly

The LCD it's self is actually physically cracked, the glass is still ok believe it or not. I will post a picture later.
That could actually be covered under warranty.if the outer glass is unharmed.
but then again what do I know
Ya, I'm not sure either. Seems to me there would be no way the glass (LCD panel, outer glass or otherwise) would crack under 'normal operating use'. But if there are no outward signs of being dropped or flexed, maybe they would cover it.
If there was, maybe, some insight as to how it happened it would help.

I believe that I put slighting to much stress on the case causing the LCD inside to break. But the outside glass and case look almost perfect. (Wouldn't have ever thought that it would break like that)
One other thing that I've thought about is square trade's warranty. (only $100 for accidental warranty)

Good point - As I understand it, our tabs have Gorilla glass which allows for some level of flex without shattering. So I guess it would be easy to flex the tab too much and crack the LCD panel while not damaging the outer glass. However, doing this without some sign of flex/distortion of the frame seems unlikely. Though still possible I suppose.
If your tab outwardly shows no signs of flex or distortion then all the better.
This is all hypothetical of course. You still haven't mentioned how it cracked or the story behind it. Just that it's cracked. Did you sit on it?
At this point...
What do you have to loose by sending it back to Acer under 1 yr. Parts warentee? Worst case outcome: you don't get it fixed and end up right where you started with a broken a500.
Aside from that, sorry your tab broke / you broke your tab which one is it, and let's see some sexy broken a500 pics plz lol
Can you still use the hdmi? If so you should be able to use it with a flat screen tv/monitor. So it's not totally trashed.

This is a good point.
If you use your credit card to pay for the a500, it might be cover by a extended warranty (check your credit card agreement papers or give them a call ).

Unfortunately I paid with cash..........
Click HERE for some more info on a possible source for a replacement LCD.
I suspect that you would have a much better chance finding a replacement LCD than finding a replacement touch panel.

Well, yesterday it happened. I had my N7 in my back pocket (as I usually do when walking the short distances to the corner store and back). I ended up tripping over a toy my nephew left on the porch, and landed on my butt (and the tablet), The screen is shattered and will no longer respond to touch.
I cannot return it, so I have instead opted to fix it myself. However, the cheapest price I've found so far for the Glass/Digitzer is around $160.00! Add shipping and the cost of the tools and it is nearly $200!
I find it utterly insane that a single piece of the tablet costs nearly as much as it would to just buy a new one... which I may end up having to do unless I can find the part for less.
Any ideas? I figured I would ask you fine people if you know of any better pricing or not before I make my decision.
My suggestion would be to buy a new one and part out the old one on EBay.
Price you get for the parts should more than cover your new one, and pretty much everything - like speakers and battery - just unplug.
You will even find buyers for the case parts. If it is a 16GB unit, I bet a number of 8GB owners would like to buy the motherboard.
The profit margin on the devices is very thin so its not surprising that parts seem so expensive. Cost is recouped through advertising, data mining, and online content.
This is nothing new. Broken screens on laptops are also close to the cost of a new laptop. Many consumer electronic are not worth fixing.

Well, thanks for the advice guys!
I've decided that I'm going to go out and buy a new one. However, I'm a bit torn on whether or not I should sell the broken one, or just hold onto it for later.
I can definitely make a good bit of my money back by "parting" it out. However, I think it would be fun to have a "test tablet" around to try out some physical mods I have in mind... and I could always fix it later when prices come down a bit.
I bought a 32gb when it came out, I still have my 16 its great for testing roms and kernels and stuff on before flashing things on my 32.
Obviously you couldn't do that with a broken screen but the philosophy applies to physical mods....
What did you have in mind?

For now, just get a USB-OTG adapter and use a mouse with the device (You didn't say if the LCD was broken as well).
You can get a USB finger mouse that fits on your finger andmove the cursor around that way.
Yes, no more multitouch but hey - at least you've got a backup tablet.
As for the touch glass surface, it's bonded/glued to the LCD around the outside of the LCD frame. The best way to separate the LCD
from the glass would be to carefully disassemble the LCD assembly by popping up the back of the LCD frame and removing the guts, then carefully using a hot wire (of about 30guage or thinner) to cut the front of the LCD frame from the glass.
Re-assemble the LCD in the metal frame afterwards - it should just snap together.
So I had been having some issues with flickering and creeking on my screen and intended to call in for a warranty, but kept putting it off. Eventually a hairline crack formed on the screen and it basically has bricked my device, as the touch screen is not working.
Google wouldn't cover it under warranty because of the crack, and suggested I contact ASUS about getting it repaired.
As inexpensive as the tablet is, I am wondering if it is even worth it to pay ASUS to fix it. Anyone have any experience with this?
Has anyone actually tried replacing the screen with parts off eBay or something? Is that possible? Or is the glued down screen not an easy fix. Any advice would be helpful.
If all else fails, now I have an excuse to get the refreshed version when it comes out
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the screen replacement from Asus is around $150, which includes the labor. The LCD and digitizer comes and gets replaced as one whole piece. I've seen some non-OEM replacements for sale online, but I would only recommend you getting that if you are comfortable doing the repairs yourself. If you buy the digitizer by itself, prepare to spend some time prying the bad one apart from the LCD and vice versa.

At that price I might as well just buy a new one. Or hold off for the new version.
Normally I wouldn't be too comfortable fixing something like this myself, but since it is basically just a paper weight as it is I really don't have anything to lose. Best case scenario is it works and I learn a whole lot from doing it. Worst case scenario is I still have a non functioning tablet.
Besides, who can resist taking things apart?
This morning I stupidly shattered the glass on my HN8. I propped it up whilst talking on Skype then it fell face down on the floor. The glass is completely shattered. However the the digitiser and touch screen all appear to be working fine with no bleed or loss of touch sensitivity anywhere on the screen. So I'm guessing I could just replace the glass or get one of these little repair shops you see around to do it? Any advice would be great right now. Seems such a shame. Saw a German Youtube on how to change the glass on a Huawei P8 possibly looks like it might be a bit too involved for my skill level?
Going to get it fixed at local mobile repair shop. £195 and it will take about a month. Moral of the story DO NOT DROP and smash your screen!!! Had a look on ebay and a few other places £150 for digitiser and screen frame, but not brave enough to attempt repair myself. The only good thing to come out of this is when I get it back. Nougat might be available. Did I mention... Don't drop your phone and smash your screen?

Sorry to hear that, did you have the official matrix case? can highly recommend, only a few dollars more ali express.

Also I hate Big bulky cases. The Handset is big enough. I realise It probably would have spared my screen, but still. Thanks for taking time to offer a solution though. Appreciated!!!:good:
I have already handed my device in for repair. doesn't look too involved in this video. However I still don't feel confident enough to attempt something like this. Maybe the next time I shatter the screen In all seriousness though Just be aware if you fix your phone by yourself or get it done like I have, It's not going to be a cheap, quick job.
Take good care of your HN8'sguys!

Like I said, I took it in for repair to a repair shop so, They are sourcing digitiser display. Probably One from China I would imagine.
You can get the LCD assembly on Aliexpress for 120GBP/148USD/198AUD
I think it's a bit cheaper than eBay.
