So, i'm not sure what the issue is, or if this has already been addressed.
I have my tablet and phone set up on a VPN using vpnCilla, that works.
I set up SMB through AntTek File Explorer on both devices, that works.
However! when attempting to access the SMB drive, it hangs, lags, or times out.
My coworker has the same setup on a Galaxy tab (stock) and able to access the network through the exact same method like butter.
Could this be an issue with how JB 4.1.2 handles data packets? (both my devices have 4.1.2 installed, rooted).
I've tried 4 other SMB compatible file managers, gives me the same result.

Hi,
I was posting this on android forums so i thought that I should post here also for those who does not check all forums
This is for accessing any kind of file over local network
This is what I am doing on Samsung Galaxy
1) I installed cifs manager ( you have to download cifs kernel module along with that which I attached).
2) Then I shared my drive on my computer
3) Mount the directory on phone using cifs manager
4) Now you can use any application on phone to access the mounted files. Video files will run like you are running from phone
I tried allshare but that was tooo slow and does not run all formats. This method can be even used with rockplayer which plays everything
Any question let me know as this is working great on stock rom.
I'm wondering what others file transfer workaround is.
For larger movie files (1-2GB), I have been uploading one by one to Dropbox, then downloading onto my tab. But this is awfully time consuming.
Anyone have a better workaround until File Transfer recognizes the 10.1?
I'm really confused by all these threads about file transfer not working
I have had no problems whatsoever
is it because you are using a mac?
i have file transfer problems, too. trying to transfer a huge file / large number of files via usb and windows file explorer just aborts the transfer after a few minutes without any error message.
currently im using "wifi explorer" fpr transmitting files to my tablet. it's a cool app i've already been using on my android phone, too. with this tool you can access your tablet/phone with a browser (web-interface), once you've started wifi explorer and you're connected to your wifi.
It's not so much so a specifically Mac issue or Windows machine issue, apparently quite a few of the IO tabs just simply cannot or won't be recognized by either OS. I know of this first hand cuz neither my Mac nor Windows 7 ultimate machines see my tab.
Uplinked through my mind
I found out that the computer won't pick up your device if USB Debugging mode is on. After I disabled that and had the KIES drivers installed, Windows picked up the device without any problems.

Ill try this after class and post back my results.
SGT 10.1 uplink initiative
Given the MTP limitation on the GT 7.7, the only "stock" way to get data onto the Tab is via Kies.
A much more elegant solution is to install "Samba Filesharing" (free app on Android Market) which turns the GT 7.7 into a full SMB server that you can mount -- I did so with my MacBook Air. You can then copy files across via WiFi (no USB cable!).
You may need to perform the SD card hack listed elsewhere in this forum to write to the SD card when it's mounted (even via SMB)...I didn't have any luck until I did that.
Of course there are other alternatives such as Dropbox (or my fave Sugarsync) but these require a sync to the cloud and then a download, which both eat into your broadband data (caps) if you're worried about such things.
Just thought I would share!
Why not use AirDroid? Imo the best tool out there. And you can manage SMS, contacts,... everything too with it!
^ I tried AD and don't like the web interface. The nice thing about Samba is that it's integrated into the Finder so you can use the native file copy tools. Makes batch copying a breeze.
Thanks for this info, I always assumed that the Tab7.7 also had the debug mode where I can just plug it in like the Galaxy phones, any links to that mounting options for the Sd card?
adb push anyone?

Unfortunately not. MTP mode only. If you are on Windows, you can still use explorer to copy, but on Macs you must use Kies...which is why Samba is a better option for me.
Id prefer a file copy over wireless so I need to know how to use that Samba thing..
ES file manager allows you to administer files from the tab and access network shares including streaming 1080p mkv files. Pretty nifty, but doesn't mount the tab.
What's the speed of "Samba Filesharing" ?
I use DooBlou Wifi file explorer (was one of Amazon.com's free apps of the day) to dump files from my Mac to the Tab. You have to be rooted to write to the external SD card, as with other non-bundled apps, however.
adb push
adb wifi
webkey
ES File Explorer
Hey all, I can't seem to pull files off my phone from work. I have the drives instaled as I have rootkit on my computer...it seems to just hang/crash every time i try and transfer a bunch of files (like my pictures or apks i have pulled from my phone and stored on the sd card.
Thanks in advance!
I have found MTP file transfers to be somewhat unreliable. (It is quite frustrating when it crashes in the middle of transferring a large file.
My solution is to use Wi-Fi file transfers whenever possible.
AirDroid has file transfer capability. This is probably easiest to set up as it only requires a web browser on your desktop. <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid>
Run an FTP server on the device. (Great if you have FileZilla or a similar FTP client on your desktop.) <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer>
SSH/SFTP. SSHDroid works great for rooted devices. <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=berserker.android.apps.sshdroid>
I hope this helps.
Hi,
I got a strange probolem when trying to access files on a samba share. The share is on a Pogoplug running ArchLinux and I can access it from Xubuntu fine. Howerver, on the N7 using ES File Explorer, i can browse the directories fine. I can even create new files. But as soon as I try to access a file, I get an error saying "parameter incorrect" or "Cache remote file failed". The problem occurss on publish shares as well as user shared. I tried other Samba clients than ES File Explorer, but the result is always the same. Anybody an idea how to solve this?
Also works flawlessly on my iPhone, just tried. Anybody know any special samba options required or incompatible with android?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Just realize this question may be better in the networking forum. Cab an operator move out there please?

Just tried to browse a Windows share from my N7, and that works fine, so there must be something specific to the Linux samba setup that the N7 doesn't like.
Found the solution, this appears to be a Samba bug: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9706
Setting unix extensions = no in the smb.conf fixes it for now.
