Greetings,
I have had my Transformer since last night, and and loving the honeycomb experience generally!
Only issue I have found so far is that if you plug the Tablet into an XP computer the MTP prococal drivers will only allow you to transfer recognised media files.
This is irritating because that does not include:
.apk
.epub
you can get into the file system and copy things to the Tablet, as well as delete things.
However you cannot rename, move around on the tablet directly etc.
This is more of an FYI post than a plea for help, I did the transfers I needed using micro SD.
oh, and under Windows 7 64bit you can tell it to skip the unknown file, ot to copy it anyway, which works fine.
I thought Transformer works as USB Mass Storage device not MTP like Xoom?
Strange. Works fine in win 7. Another option for smaller files is to use dropbox.

Afraid not. You can access the SD card from the mtp share, but with the limits above.

have got file transfers working via USB(mass storage).. both win 7 and win XP (after installing Asus sync).. also got it working via the networkwith the transformer seeing my windows shares when browsing with Ghost Commander file manager with SMB addon.. hope this helps
I shall install the Asus software and see what happens.
With my HTC Inspire 4G I plug in the USB cable and it pops up as a drive to transfer files onto (ie movies), however with the galaxy tab 10.1 it doesn't. I rooted it on a windows machine, so wondering how to make it a USB drive when I plug in, so I can transfer movies and files from my Mac.
Anyone?
It doesn't mount as a USB drive on a Mac - you have to use this utility to put files on the device.
Apparently I'm too new auser to post a link so I'll write it out:
android dot com forward-slash filetransfer

good find with the app, but it doesn't work. when I plug in it just says "No Android device found" and on the tablet it says Connected - Press home button to quit keys... but it doesn't mount a drive or open up file transfer box. Am I missing something?
Same here - AFT doesn't work on Snow Leopard, much less Lion. Please tell me that you, or someone else has discovered a solution since this post three months ago?
I believe there is a thread on this in the development section. But to answer your question anyways, you simply need to go to Samsung's support website and after entering your product model, go to the downloads section and install the Kies software for Mac. Unfortunately you must use this version of Kies since the GT 10.1 can't be mounted as mass storage on Macs.
Guys, use Websharing. Look for it in the market. Basically turns Tab into a web server on the network accessible via any web browser.
That's what I use. Android File Transfer (AFT) does not work, and Apple broke/changed something in their AFP. I used to use the LAN feature in Estrongs until Lion came out and borked that.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
AFT will not work because it is built using a library of libmtp that is too old for the Galaxy Tab. Hopefully Google will update it soon to support the Galaxy Tab.
I tried to compile libmtp to support it, but couldn't get it to work. I'll try again when I'm not busy and see what happens.
In the meantime, you can use Samsung Kies software, or DDMS if you have the android SDK

Not a mac guy but had the same problem on my pc. Ended up installing Remote Web Desktop (Smartdog studio) from android marketplace on the tab. It's free. Then used filezilla (or any other ftp program) from my pc. Worked great, so no more worries about USB connectivity.
I recently bought a tab 8.9 and I was very disappointed by this problem. I'm going through FTP right now.
Is it possible to enable normal file transfer if I root my tablet?
theres a way..but u need to have ADB ..also need to be home to let u know..
there is this ADB tool app that u run and it will detect ur tab..i got mine detected mine is 10.1
I've never really understood this problem - is it something that will be sorted it with the newer Android firmwares such as 3.2? I had a Vega running vegacomb 3.2 and that mounted on the Mac without a problem.
Use File Expert, they have a built in FTP & websharing. It works great with a FTP app on the Mac.

I tried turn on and off several times. Before and after Kies opening every possibility just not work. But until at last it just can sync with Kies by itself. I really don't understand how can it work.
Any way via Kies you can only music, photo and video. You have any idea how to push PDF files into it??
i use adb push for putting everything on my tablet....its a lot easier than waiting for Kies.
I have mac and use this method for file transfer to my Galaxy Tab 10.1 :
-install android-sdk-mac_x86 from Android developers site.
-open 'tool' folder and search for ddms ( android-sdk-mac_x86/tools/ddms )
-connect your galaxy tab to mac via usb
-dubbleclick on ddms (it will start terminal and java) new window 'Dalvik Debug Monitor will open
-click on your device listed in this new window
-from file menu open Device -> File Explorer
-new window with folders of your Galaxy tab will pop up
- navigate to any folder on your device and just drag and drop any file from your computer finder window.

+1 on the File Expert Method.
Download FE (free) and Cyberduck (free) unless you already have a FTP server/client program.
Turn on sharing via FTP on tab, then enter in the settings on Cyberduck, and voila! Wirelessly connected on your local net.
Just drag and drop any file to any directory. I've loaded multiple items ranging from 100mb to 1.34gb in minutes. movies, pics, pdfs, you name it.
I feel this is the easiest of all, and kies actually works for me!

Yesterday I was able to connect my Tab to my Win XP PC using the USB cable. I was able to transfer files without difficulty. But, some how I must have changed a setting on the Tab and the Tab is no longer recognized by any of my PC's. I think it is a Sync setting that was changed.
Now, when I connect using the USB cable, the PC says " Found New Hardware MTP"
What settiing do I need to change to get the PC to recognize the Tab?
Check under application > development > usb debugging.
Thanks, I found a USB driver on the Acer site. That seems to have solved the problem. But, that driver was not needed yesteray, and I don't know what "MTP" means?

Even my Windows 7 boxes do not recognize the a500 without installing the USB driver from the Acer site. Guess you somehow got lucky
Mine always saw the internal 16gb on my Win7 machine. Before the latest updates, I was able to connect with my Win7 PC with no problem and even go to STORAGES and see my 32gb card. It no longer works now. All I see now is SD which is empty.
Which means I cannot copy anything directly to the Micro SD (external_sd). It worked before the last couple of updates. I'm currently running 4.010.10. Now I have to copy it to the 16 internal from the PC and then use the tablet to copy it to the external_sd.
Acer giveth and taketh away.... bummer.
Edit: And yes ... my debugging is on. Always has been. Stock kernel too.
Anyone figure this out yet?
I can't connect on my Win7-64 PC at all.
My 32 bit laptop will connect, but not to SD card, only internal SD.
Try turning development off when using usb go pc which no need for driver, if development is on then you need driver installed.

i can't get my tab to connect to my mac , ive tried both usb ports, ive tried ticking usb-debugging on and off with no luck. Anyone know whats wrong?
If you are having usb issues go to acers web site and go to the drivers and download section for the iconia a500. make sure you look under the honeycomb 3.0 downloads and not the 3.1. as the drivers are not listed under 3.1. download the drivers to your pc (not your tablet)and install. it is an 89 megabyte file so I am sure it has the drivers for everyone in it.
Alos if you are ojn honeycomb 3.0 make sure you get the wi-fi unpate as well while you are there it fixes lots of wi-fi problems.
Remember to thanks if I have helped you.
Thanks for the quick reply in the drivers package There is none for mac and on my fascinate it connects without problem and i never instaled any drivers
Chuban7, Hi well I am not a mac person but I did look around the net a bit and from what I see there are not usb drivers persay for android for mac. but what i have found is there are several companies who mac sync software that connects android to mac. One site to check out is http://www.salling.com/MediaSync/mac/ they have free versions of thier software to use. Give it a try. but there are many other venders of mac to android sync software. seems only way from what I read cant find usb drivers anywhere for ya for any android device.
You can also look through the android market for a free program called"auto mount your sd card" supose to work with mac but I dont know as I dont have a mac
MY personal choice is a program also free on market called "software data cable" again suppose to work with macs and pc's it is completely wireless so no usb cable needed to transfere files so in theory then no usb drivers needed either.
You can also use a program called dropbox allso free it works great just drop files into the dropbox folder and then once they upload go open dropbox on your android and bingo there ya go thier is your files. works in reverse too for android to computer.
Only thing I can figure is that apple hates android and between them and microsoft are tring to run android into the ground so it would stand to reason if you hated a compeating vendor why would you make it easy for them to run thier devices on your software. There is a reason apples Ipod/pad stuff works and others dont apple dont want you to buy android lol.
Just my little conspericy theory stuff good luck hope any of this helps you.
I have the same issue with Linux so it's not a Mac issue. I can plug my Android phone in and it mounts and show up as a USB device that I can then take a file manager and copy/paste/delete files. I use this all the time to transfer files to my phones sd card. Neither the A100 or the A500 will mount as a drive on my Linux machine. I like them but that is pretty much a deal breaker to me.

Somehow I feel very doubtful that your Linux OS cannot be set up to mount the a500 as a USB storage device. My Linux skills are rather rusty and outdated, however - so I could be wrong. Can you emulate a stripped down version of windows from your Linux system to get around this?
I can vouch for using software data cable (free app from AM).
Works perfectly with my iMac and should do with PC, since it essentially opens an FTP port on the Iconia (port 8888 by default) that can be accessed by any FTP client on the computer (I use Cyberduck on Mac, FireFTP plugin for Firefox works on all OS's).
If you are rooted, check root access in the app settings to get into the root, and find /mnt/external_SD for the add-on card. It is probably smartest not to leave the root access on all of the time unless you really need it as there is abundant opportunity to create havoc accidentally

I didn't say it couldn't be done, I just think that it's strange and wrong to make an Android device dependent on having Windows. Yes I suppose I could install Windows in a Vm but I won't.
Using Google (pun intended) I found a fairly simple solution. It's not plug-n-play but is very doable even by an non techie.
There are also some ways of access the Tab file system using a browser and Wifi

Nice app thanks, didn't show up when searching for FTP servers. ;(
The only minor issue I see is that at 1st glance it appears that you don't have access to the external_sd card unless Rooted.
Did work better than any of the other FTP servers I have tried.
When I connect my Nexus 7 to my Windows XP (SP3) PC via USB, it's obvious the computer recognizes it and it tries to install ADB drivers. Whether I choose to install those drivers or not, I still can't locate my device in the Windows Explorer Tree. I checked Disk Management for the hell of it and nothing but my PC's harddrives were there. There's an attempt to install drivers for "MTP" but that fails and I'm pretty sure that's the cause; however, I'm unable to replicate it, even as I uninstall/reinstall applicable drivers from the device manager the MTP failure never happens anymore. I did some googling and found a thread with someone who had a similiar experience. In turn, I downloaded https://www.box.com/s/2c25e8bc42ecce400afd to try a different set of drivers. Same problem. Driver install is fine for ADB, but still unable to see my device in Windows Explorer. I'm able to successfully connect the device to the PC with PTP for the camera. I can access DCIM and cache which can serve as a work around, but I'm hoping you can provide any ideas you might have. Thank you!
edit - ***resolution***: Ok, I figured it out...I had to disable USB debugging. I don't know if this helped either, but I installed these drivers as an alternative to the drivers that were originally installed: https://www.box.com/s/2c25e8bc42ecce400afd
While connected to PC, I switched to PTP mode because I was about to give up and just use that
I then disabled usb debugging and switched back to MTP at which point the drivers successfully installed and I could now view my device in Windows Explorer. I also believe downloading the drivers in the link above helped since the first crack I took at this was unsuccessful with existing drivers.
install pdanet on pc and it will install drivers for u so it will be recognized

Been battling with this on my XP machine since yesterday. I couldn't even get debugging to work until I installed NakedDriver. And even still, there seems to be no way to get MTP to work without turning debugging off. On my Win7 machine everything worked perfectly, both ADB and MTP, right out of the box. I have the Galaxy Nexus drivers installed on both machines (which I've read are compatible with the N7). I also have the latest version of Windows Media Player (I've read that some older versions have issues with MTP). Is anyone else able to run ADB and MTP on XP?
*edit*
A: Does PDAnet let you use MTP and ADB simultaneously? Because I really don't want to install it if I don't have to. I got rid of it ages ago (too many things starting up at boot time).
B: I have a Galaxy Nexus also, and I have no issues on the XP box.
I wouldn't bother with MTP, it's not always showing the contents of the internal storage properly when viewed in Windows Explorer.
Earlier today when I was trying to set up a backup profile for it, it didn't copy all the files off. On closer inspection I found folders like TitaniumBackup to be completely empty, which is not true according to ES File Explorer on the tablet.
I tried connecting MTP again, with USB Debugging on and off but this made no difference. Also I'm only seeing the Notifications folder instead of 36 folders on the internal storage now, really random how it's working.

Same observation here (a few months later) on stock Android 4.1.1 rooted.
It seems that new files in the internal memory remain invisible for a long time, but so far they have become visible eventually, sometimes a day or two later. I have no clue what could possibly cause this, and I have not found any trick or workaround that makes them visible, not even rebooting. Any hint is welcome.

Workaround
I now use the following workaround.
Install SDrescan from Google Play.

Everytime, the laptop recognize the device as android ADB interface.

Hi,
I tried to install kies 3.0 but I couldn't because kies 3.0 needs XP SP3 and above. My PC runs XP SP2.
I installed the latest usb drivers (I tried with 1.5.27.0 and after that 1.5.29.0) and still have the issue.

Wrong. - You can plug it into your PC and open the device choose Movies/Download/Music/random folder etc and copy across.
As for the issue, it could be because the file is an old XVID codec, sometimes phones hate XVID, and obviously SP2 isn't exactly the best update you can use, Can you try and get SP3? - If not, try using KIES as stated previously Or a WiFi transfer app.
If you can't get Kies 3.0 installed because of OS issues, try installing the latest of Kies 2. At the least, it should install proper USB drivers so you can at least see the device. You don't have USB 3 hardware, so you don't need any of the latest additions the driver supports, and I know the previous Kies drivers worked to see the Note 3 when I first got it. Kies wouldn't support it, but at least I could transfer files.
The first message (about an incompatible file type) is an Android bug. Ignore it, it happens on every device for nearly ecery filetype (even jpeg) and with every connected OS.
Because the file type is not recognized as an Android file type by Windows, it tells you that the device can't natively play that file. You'd need an app. Which we have, called Stock Player or Gallery or any media app, but Windows can't see installed apps on Android.
It has nothing to do with vodecs or containers or root. It's just Windows being ridiculous.
Just say Yes To All.
As for the can not copy.. My TF700 does this, because it disconnects whenever the screen turns off. Are you using a battery saver that disabled connections when the screen is off?
You don't need root or KIES or USB debugging or any other bull**** to use filetransfer to a PC. Just a cable and a USB port.
Anyone who seems to think otherwise is an idiot who aparently isn't even capable of connecting a cable and opening Windows Explorer.

Hi,
I tried with the latest Kies version before kies 3.0. Actually my PC recognizes Note 3 but I have still the issue. I tried with several file types - avi file, as I mentioned below, doc file, mp3 file. First message appears, I click on yes to all and after that the second one appears and I click on skip all. Actually I tried with all opportunities - still have the issue, the files cannot be copy on the phone.
I use the stock battery saver and DU battery saver app from google play. I checked the options but I didn't find any option which disconnects the device when the screen is off.
I think its an issue with transferring large files. Every time I try to tranfer a file around the size of say 2 or 3 gb i get that error.
When connected, drag down the notification center, click usb options(or however its called) and swap from mtp to ptp mode
hit 'thanks' if i helped you

Don't use XP as it doesn't know what vfat is. If you're gona use XP then format your SD card as fat but you will have a 2GB file limit.
Large files use Win7 or a 3rd party app.
