Hey all, I can't seem to pull files off my phone from work. I have the drives instaled as I have rootkit on my computer...it seems to just hang/crash every time i try and transfer a bunch of files (like my pictures or apks i have pulled from my phone and stored on the sd card.
Thanks in advance!
I have found MTP file transfers to be somewhat unreliable. (It is quite frustrating when it crashes in the middle of transferring a large file.
My solution is to use Wi-Fi file transfers whenever possible.
AirDroid has file transfer capability. This is probably easiest to set up as it only requires a web browser on your desktop. <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid>
Run an FTP server on the device. (Great if you have FileZilla or a similar FTP client on your desktop.) <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer>
SSH/SFTP. SSHDroid works great for rooted devices. <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=berserker.android.apps.sshdroid>
I hope this helps.

Has anyone run into the issue detailed here?

Audiogalaxy has now become a legit music streaming app, which is supposed to work surprisingly well. But due to its past it seems like CM6 blocks it from the host files.
There is a fix to update the host files but the instructions in that thread are detailed for a n1, anyone have any idea how we could get that done on a HD2 rom?
I'd love to figure this out as well!
I'm guessing you could put those host files somewhere in the Android file on the SD card. I just can't figure out where. What is the program that is blocking ads? I'm using Shubcraft 1.5.
Ok. So I got it working on mine. I downloaded the host files. I extracted the the "hosts.txt" file. I turned on my phone and the following before I booted up my android: I followed the path through my mobile device while connected to my computer (Active Sync or Pocket PC...as a side note, this is the first time I've been able to use either on my Mac because it wouldn't detect the usb, but VirtualBox just fixed that bug). SD card -> Android-> System -> Etc. I copied the "hosts.txt" in the Etc folder and saved. Booted up Android and Voila!
I'm wondering what others file transfer workaround is.
For larger movie files (1-2GB), I have been uploading one by one to Dropbox, then downloading onto my tab. But this is awfully time consuming.
Anyone have a better workaround until File Transfer recognizes the 10.1?
I'm really confused by all these threads about file transfer not working
I have had no problems whatsoever
is it because you are using a mac?
i have file transfer problems, too. trying to transfer a huge file / large number of files via usb and windows file explorer just aborts the transfer after a few minutes without any error message.
currently im using "wifi explorer" fpr transmitting files to my tablet. it's a cool app i've already been using on my android phone, too. with this tool you can access your tablet/phone with a browser (web-interface), once you've started wifi explorer and you're connected to your wifi.
It's not so much so a specifically Mac issue or Windows machine issue, apparently quite a few of the IO tabs just simply cannot or won't be recognized by either OS. I know of this first hand cuz neither my Mac nor Windows 7 ultimate machines see my tab.
Uplinked through my mind
I found out that the computer won't pick up your device if USB Debugging mode is on. After I disabled that and had the KIES drivers installed, Windows picked up the device without any problems.

Ill try this after class and post back my results.
SGT 10.1 uplink initiative
Given the MTP limitation on the GT 7.7, the only "stock" way to get data onto the Tab is via Kies.
A much more elegant solution is to install "Samba Filesharing" (free app on Android Market) which turns the GT 7.7 into a full SMB server that you can mount -- I did so with my MacBook Air. You can then copy files across via WiFi (no USB cable!).
You may need to perform the SD card hack listed elsewhere in this forum to write to the SD card when it's mounted (even via SMB)...I didn't have any luck until I did that.
Of course there are other alternatives such as Dropbox (or my fave Sugarsync) but these require a sync to the cloud and then a download, which both eat into your broadband data (caps) if you're worried about such things.
Just thought I would share!
Why not use AirDroid? Imo the best tool out there. And you can manage SMS, contacts,... everything too with it!
^ I tried AD and don't like the web interface. The nice thing about Samba is that it's integrated into the Finder so you can use the native file copy tools. Makes batch copying a breeze.
Thanks for this info, I always assumed that the Tab7.7 also had the debug mode where I can just plug it in like the Galaxy phones, any links to that mounting options for the Sd card?
adb push anyone?

Unfortunately not. MTP mode only. If you are on Windows, you can still use explorer to copy, but on Macs you must use Kies...which is why Samba is a better option for me.
Id prefer a file copy over wireless so I need to know how to use that Samba thing..
ES file manager allows you to administer files from the tab and access network shares including streaming 1080p mkv files. Pretty nifty, but doesn't mount the tab.
What's the speed of "Samba Filesharing" ?
I use DooBlou Wifi file explorer (was one of Amazon.com's free apps of the day) to dump files from my Mac to the Tab. You have to be rooted to write to the external SD card, as with other non-bundled apps, however.
adb push
adb wifi
webkey
ES File Explorer
Hi,
I’m running into an odd problem.
I have a Google Nexus 7 Tablet. I’ve unlocked and rooted it with the Toolkit. I’m attaching it via USB on a Windows 7, 64 bit system. I’ve installed the PDANet drivers.
I’ve made a back up of my tablet using Titanium Backup. Within the Titanium Backup directory are many small files, that I’d like to copy back onto my desktop for safe keeping.
However every time I copy the directory over to my PC using Windows Explorer, only a fraction of files get copied, I’d say about 20%. I’ve tried it several times, but, can’t seem to get it to do a complete copy. I’ve tried selecting the entire directory and the all the files (select all) without success.
When you plug in the micro USB cable to your tablet, does it automatically go into mass storage mode (though I have selected Mass Storage mode as my option).
I’m coming from several Samsung devices and I know there are a few ways to enable mass storage mode on them, and at a minimum, you have to choose to mount the SD card. Is there something similar with Asus devices?
What am I missing?
Thanks!
I rarely send files via the USB port... normally just use the wifi connection. Just sent all the TI backup files via AndFTP to a server over WiFi and it only a little more than 5 minutes.
I then for the first time, hooked up the N7 to my USB to transfer the files to my notebook.
Didn't make any changes.
Created a new directory on my Notebook (Win7Pro) and then opened the drive on the N7, found the TitaniumBackup directory and selected all the file (not the directory holding them).
Took about 5 mins to move the files which was about the same as the Wifi transfer.
Not errors, and all the files got there.
Not sure if that helps you...
Oh. the N7 is rooted with TWRP recovery on it but otherwise Stock.
BTW.. this morning I tried this app which is a sync app between my workstation at home and the Droid. Worked good enough I upgraded and now have a number of manual syncs setup (droid to computer)

Hi krelvinaz,
Thanks for taking the time to test that for me. I did exactly the same procedure as you. I'll play with it some more and see if it was just a bad driver install or something. Perhaps I'll try it on my laptop at work...
And thanks very much for the link... that app does look promising indeed. I really appreciate that it doesn't sync with the cloud, but with my pc. That's great.
Thanks again for your help!
Update:
Ok, well I tried to copy the same files on my work laptop, which is running XP, and without any additional drivers, and it stopped at exactly the same place, at one particular file.
I then deleted that one backup file, and tried to copy the directly again, and it worked. I then tried again on my Windows 7, 64 bit desktop and it too was successful!
I guess that file was corrupted or something.
I'm glad I figured it out, and thanks again krelvinaz.
I got my N7 today. Just plugged in USB to my computer and copied my "backup-apps" folder and my MP3 folder from my phone. Moved very fast, now I have about 150 .apk's I can install if I have recognition problems with the Play store, and 2000 songs.... using up my "16" gb fast... about time to root and add stickmount.
I've bought a Nexus 7 (32GB) from BestBuy a few days ago. Works perfectly, but I don't like the file transfer method. I've been using the old Archos 32 a long time before, and I've helped a lot of friends with their own Andorid phones. We used to mount and unmount the devices to transfer files to computers. Mounting meant I was not able to use it, but I could transfer files. Now on my Nexus 7, I can do both. At first sight, I was quite happy about that, but I've realized it used similar file transfer methods as my very old 2005 mp3 player. Everytime I dump songs into my tablet, it tells me the file is not supported. I don't care about that, but it didn't used to be as ****ty as that with other Android phones. Quite a disappointment.
Now I started downloading stuff with tTorrent, and files are even more fricked up. I've set my download location as /Download/Torrents, as I used to do before. Back on my PC, I wanted to copy the torrented files, but they weren't there at all. Even at default location. With ASTRO ans ES file managers, I can clearly see they are at the right place. But the PC connection doesn't cooperate. I made a little search, and found out they were all hidden in a /storage/emulated directory on my PC. But only half my downloaded files were there (yeah, about 4GB hidden somewhere).
Now I'm kinda stuck in a trap. Where are my files? Would there be any way to return to the "normal" mount/unmount transfer system? I tried the MTP and PTP thing but both are weird and hide my downloaded files. I can't transfer files my files again via WiFi as we don't have much bandwidth up here in Canada. Computer doesn't support Bluetooth (and neither NFC lol). I just want the old file system back. Anyone has already faced the same situation or could help? Thanks in advance.
