Bad experience with TF101, Hesitant about getting TF300 - Transformer TF300T General

Earlier this year i got an ASUS TF101, I was treating it so gently OTA stock updates without any missing around and just after couple of months and after updating to ICS ... (Many people reported having random reboots with ICS, but my problems was worse) It got stuck at the ASUS logo with no progress what so ever, I had to make tens of trials: different ROMs, cold reboots, restores, .. etc to get it to work again, and within a couple of days randomly and out of the blue it gets stuck again ... The bottom line it was bad, nasty experience.
I haven't been following the TF300 threads, so the question is .. Do people get similar issues with the TF300, random reboots, random sys crashes, ... etc

IMO don't get the tf300. Get the N10. More powerful, and I think a better company to deal with. Asus has been trouble for a lot of people, and I know I am sick of the tablet. The Tegra3 isn't everything I had hoped for.

Like you, from TF101 to TF300. I have no problem with my TF300. Working perfectly.

TF300T - dock keyboard +, if you don't plan to buy go to N10.
Sent from my unlocked ASUS TF300T

N10 has one thing that'll one-up the TF300 and even the 700. And by reading this, you probably already know. 300dpi.
But, that was exactly the reason why I didn't get the TF700, and won't get the N10. High-resolution screens.
Sure, they're real nice (reaaaal), but what apps are optimized for it? There aren't even that many Tablet Apps for Android, yet 2560x1600 or 1920x1080. 1080p being the more reasonable one. The n10 fragments apps completely, starting a new line of high-res apps that most likely won't be followed up for a year or so.
So if you want apps to look optimal, TF300 is the way to go.
Sure, I/O will hamper it. But nothing a bit of tinkering can't fix. Mine runs smooth

No problems whatsoever with my tf300. And it has a micro SD slot, if you plan on using a lot of storage. I like the N10, but decided that the card slot was a must for me, and the screen resolution is adequate for what I do. And I've had good experience with Asus support for the most part (including replacing the video card and mobo on my G51) on the laptops/netbooks I have owned from them. YMMV.

Very bad IO speed with all latest Asus Android tablets.
Go for Note 10.1 or Nexus10.

WTH are you guys recommending other tablets doing in this forum anyway ? LOL Sounds like you miss your TF300s. ASUS tablets are great. If you like the Nexus better.. go hang out in those forums.

Some of us recommending new generation of tablets released after TF300.
Is there any rule in xda like what you said? Or do you own xda?

I have had 2 TF300T due to my first one having a glitch with the touch screen it was replaced after one week of use without any problem. But my second one has been fantastic running with no issues whats so ever, getting all my firmware updates along with my Jelly Bean update.
I do hear you when it comes to purchasing something from a company you had bad luck with...once bitten twice as shy. People have been saying they would get the Nexus 10, have you given any thought to the new Asus Vivo RT 600 it comes with 2GB of Ram 1366x768 super IPS 8-megapixel camera and Windows 8 plus comes in 32GB & 64GB and many more bells and whistles. also you dont always have to go up the Nexus 7 made by Asus is also a really nice machine.......good luck on your tablet hunt.

[INFO] Let's face it honeycomb is not ready

I have had the Acer and Asus and honeycomb is weak. It's just too unstable, and the Transformer has too many quality problems. I tried to make the most of it, but today my Asus wouldn't boot up got stuck at the Asus screen. It's over, and as I look in this forum there are more complaints then then anything. Honeycomb is not ready and the Asus has serious quality issues. I'm waiting for webos now.

Quite the opposite for me. Honeycomb has been very stable and no crashes.

That's because people who are happy with their tablets don't flood the forums with new threads. Honeycomb has been anything but unstable for me. No crashes. Sure, still has video problems but that's not Honeycomb's fault.
Honeycomb FTW!!!!!!!!! sucks these forums are a good spot for crybabies lol . * just bustin blz*
yes i ****ed up my TF, yes i bought another one that i will have the next tuesday, but i never had problems with HC.... ok i lied i had my FC and other stuff, but im a CE and im so USED to computers crashing and doing weird stuff, plus i only screwed up HC when i was trying to do some anime playback

I love honeycomb as well, not one crash so far. These threads are getting really annoying.
While I am liking it mostly, i think the iPad is much more polished. Things like txyping on this forum are painful. Typing with two fingers is faster than the tablet can display. Then there are the apps, even things like the XDA app consistently crash. I found many which work fine and seem to cover my needs nicely, I still find my self wishing for a more polished product. And that is just honey comb.
As for the hardware I think it is lacking optimizations massivley. Againg this is a look and feel issue, the damned TF has friggin sharp edges. Mine actually gave me a small aluminum splinter. Also the sharp edged holes at the bottom make it uncomfortable to hold sometimes.
There are good things though. The battery seems to be great. I really like the screen. The fact that there is a micro sd slot is wonderful. Overall the tablet is light and durable.
I told myself i'd give it a wek like i did for the Iconia. I like things about both but i think the iPad is a better product overall.
not seeing any instability...works fine here.
HC was stable for me. I would't say HC is not ready, I would say the HC ecosystem is not ready yet. Too little apps for HC tablets

google its.... a bit bold on its modus operandi, they are developing hardware and hardware related software (AKA OS android) as if they were developing Gmail, and other aplications of google (and those are good), if you think about those you know what its comming its GOOOD
Ios its not bad, but... its simple and that helps a lot on the polishing part and its 4 year old too, its not bad i repeat nor old, its just more mature
EDIT: dont let the tablet fall, mine did hitting one corner and bye bye LCD, im still waitng for asus RMA

True. I am one of the non posters who is thrilled with the Transformer.
No doubt Honeycomb has a little ways to go, but this is the first time that I have used a tab that, to me, beats out the iPad. Since I have had the TF my IPAD has just collected dust.
The quality issues are minimal and the benefits greatly outweigh them.

Somethings are great. Most of what isn't will be fixed over time. Build quality issues will be resolved as different manufacturers get involved or TF 2 =)
Honeycomb apps overall can be slow though. Things like typing in this quick reply box are slow and stuttering, the halting cursor movement is very erratic. No netflix yet is annoying, but might be here eventually. In my mind I want the iPad polish on Android, but that will be in time. I'm 50/50 atm as to whether this goes back next week, if so I'll end up waiting to see what comes out this summer.
Honeycomb is awesome. I was slightly worried when I read all the initial reviews bashing the XOOM, but I've had almost no issues with it. In fact the Froyo and Gingerbread that I've had running on my phone is less stable than Honeycomb on my Transformer.
I would say that honeycomb and the transformer have both surpassed my expectations. I expected HC to have a lot more bugs than I have experienced. My first android experience was with an og droid on eclair, and until I started using what the dev community had developed, I would have killed to have my iPhone back.
I also purchased the original ipad when it came out and quickly returned it because it operated exactly the same as a big version of my iphone/iPod touch, which made it boring and usuless to me. The transformer, on the other hand, has been able to do anything that I have needed it to while also being fun. The transformer has really gotten more use than any other new gadget that I can remember, in the few weeks that I have had it. I also have not exprienced any of the quality control issues that are constantly talked about on here, other than some limited light bleed, which in my book can't really even be considered a defect.
I believe HC itself to be quite stable, as I have never had a crash/reboot. Many apps, even the supposed HC optimised apps, need some real attention to run well on HC but I don't blame the OS for that.
In short, I am very happy with HC and the quality of the transformer. The one thing that may bring me to ditch the transformer in the future is the lack of any way to use nvflash. I have partially bricked many phones and have had to use this method to restore them. Without it I don't really feel comfortable rooting and romming the thing, so for now I'm choosing to stay stock, at least until 3.1 and the constant FOTA updates are pushed out.
I'm enjoying my TF and HC more than I ever thought. I probably wouldn't have been as enthusiastic if I didn't have the keyboard dock, since typing on screen (on any tablet) is awkward. I spend more time with my TF now than I do with my laptops.

The typing issue on this site and others built using the same base platform is due to how the stock browser handles it.. try switching to the classic skin or use Firefox.. works much faster IMHO this 'lag' issue has been mentioned here and explained many times now, and whilst its not ideal.. its a pretty isolated issue and not a real reason to generalize that 'the TF is laggy/HC is laggy' (IMHO of course - but then, I'm biased and love me my TF )
No crashes to me. Very stable OS. With 3.1 should be perfect.

People need to get real. You read the post just like me, I see complaint after complaint. It's a 400 dollar half baked product.70 % bad 20% good 10% don't know what to do with this thing. Good luck with the light bleed, Sharp edges, bad speakers, unresponsive screen, gaps in the corner of screen, vibrating plastic back when volume is full blast, buggy OS, no accessories available, really I want to like it too.

Getting real.. my Transformer works just fine thankyouverymuch Only wearing the rose coloured glasses because it really does work (for me, and quite a few others it seems - though not all, I'll admit)
I'm sure you love your tech, and for that reason of course I'm disappointed that you're not getting the same experience as I am.. more satisfied customers equals a growing userbase equals more support and so on...
.. (although cheaper than the competition, the Transformer's RRP still isn't trivial and I can see why you'd hacked off), but those that are enjoying the transformer experience aren't deluding themselves that its something it isn't; we're evangelising for a reason (in our own honest opinions of course) ... I would probably be as disillusioned as you if I'd encountered the same problems, and by the sounds of it the blame (if you want to call it that) could be thought to lie with both Asus and Google.. however, for now.. i'm loving the tech, and didn't blink once when the reviews of another world beating tablet started coming out (Galaxy Tab 10.1) - this thing ticks all the right boxes for me
I guess you'll have to go with an alternative (Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPad/iPad2 etc.) or wait for something else that ticks all the right boxes from an o/s, usability, support, software library and build quality perspective..

[Q] RMA and hope for the best or Xoom?

I'm leaving for college in mid August, and my tf B4O is experiencing worse and worse light bleed. I don't care about the laptop dock, and was wondering if I should go down $400 with the Staples coupon on a -xoom- EDIT: Galaxy Tab with greater assurance of build quality or risk the RMA down in Grapevine, TX? Any other suggestions are welcome.

Hi, sorry for my english..
I have both of them.. eee pad transformer and the xoom tablet.. and both of them have some bugs.. eee pad transformer runs at the moment whit os 3.1 and overclocked cpu between 1.2 and 1.5ghz.. moves between the screens isnt fluent, moves in the app menu isnt fluent too. i try the launcher pro too, but the same problem. i have a one screen whit two widgets over the whole place, and on this screen i cant get the move between it and other screen fluent..
it didnt feel so good, and it looks very bad, i cant understand why google or asus are not in the position to fix that.. i cant belive that the hw whit dual core 1.2 ghz and 1gb ram isnt enough.
the feelings in the browser are not so good too.. most of pages works, but how? the same problem like whit the screen, the scroling up and down in the browser is not fluent.. playing from videos its not so good too.. its acceptable, but not perfect.. flash didnt work reliably, some site like facebook have problems.. google+ didnt work correct too..
i have some random reboots, but it can be from the overclock the cpu..
so, now some things to the xoom device..
here in eu(switzerland) motorola didnt roll out a update for our devices so we stay on 3.0.1.. its really terrible, i pay more then 800 CHF for it, flash didnt work, microsd card didnt work, widget on the home screen are not expandable, user agent in the browser didnt work, more correct, you didnt have the option to set the agent.. i install yesterday a us version whit 3.2, there are some modifications on it to run whit 3g on eu devices.. some things are better, but not perfect.. im not sure if flash works, i dont belive.. on youtube test speed website whit the video, i get between 5 and 9 fps on 720p, on 320p its ok.. the moves between the screens are not fluent too, the same in the menu with apps..
some problems are fixed, the widget are expandable, microsd work now, but you didnt have the feel you work whit a device which is top, dual core 1.5ghz, 1 gb ram and a graphic chip.. the big problem in browser stay on motorola whit os 3.2.. facebook didnt work correct and google+ too..
so all in all, i will wait until xoom get a officiall update here in eu and i will wate for the update from transformer to 3.2.. if things arent better, i will sell the devices and buy a real table pc whit win7 from hp which is convertable too.. this bugs in the system or whatever, im not a developer, is it the system, the hw or the work between it, its not for dayli use.. i would replace a notebook or a pc at home whit the asus transformer, but i cant do that, all this bugs make it unpossible..
and i look for a device "all in one" and didnt want to have one more.. im really a fan from android and my first device was the google phone g1/dream.. but the products like xoom or transfomer arent finished to be saled, really not.. and i cant understand firms like asus and motorola, how they cant push something that is not ready for it..
its just my opinion at the moment whit the devices..
have a nice day..
I could also get a new tf maybe a B6O or a B7O.
Thanks for the view on bugs, I actually don't get lag between screens and I get good frame rates on flash. I love the screen on this but the build quality worries me.

What about a Samsung 10.1? If I did not care about a keyboard that would be my choice.
Yeah I'm thinking just getting the Galaxy Tab after seeing no prevalent issues plaguing their forum like this one.
Actually, I'm thinking that if I get it from Staples, their return policy is 14 days. So if I RMA on the same day I buy the Transformer, I can return the Tab if the Transformer is fixed. If the Transformer is worse off than it was before, I can hang on to it. This is assuming I get the Transformer back in under two weeks.

I dunno dude the other day I was looking at their forum and they havee alot of the same complaints such as random reboots, sluggish keyboard, sleep of death, etc so evidently that stuff is just inherent in Honeycomb thus far. Sure they don't have the battery drain one since there is no dock nor the light bleed since they have a diff display type but they appeared to have plenty of other issues themselves. I do agree though if it weren't for the dock the Galaxy looks to be the way to go for a Honeycomb tablet currently, though without the built in SD slot that kinda sucks but guess you can get a dongle for that if you really need it. Also I don't think light bleed "gets worse", you sure you just are seeing it better or paying more attention to it then you were?

Well, I had these light blotches in the middle of the screen, and light bleed middle bottom and left hand corner (lower). The other day I noticed a huge amount of light bleed coming from the right hand lower corner. I may have not noticed it, but maybe through handling, the screen is less secure on the bottom frame? I'll just send it in, if they don't fix it, I'll just buy the Galaxy Tab (avoid restocking fee)
I would recommend getting the thinkpad k tablet.... I think its going to be the best android when it hits the market....had two transformers sold one to buy the thibkpad k.

Having issues with Prime wifi. Best bet to get TF101?

So I received my Transformer Prime today and am having wifi issues (very poor connection strength). Also, I have a group of very bright pixels on the screen.
I know there is a new Transformer tablet in the works that has significantly better specs...so I'd be best to wait. In the meantime, I found a mint TF101 with docking keyboard for $350. Everything checks out and it seems like a great package for the price. This coupled with ICS arriving in two weeks for the TF101 makes it a reasonable decision to return the defective Prime and get this original TF101 w/keyboard.
Is this a good move? I've never owned the original Transformer and hope that it is plenty fast to play flash content. Anyone care to offer a POV on this decision?
I plan on getting the newer Transformer in Q2 when it's rumored to release.
i think you should go for it !
I returned my Prime due to the "Unknown Serial Number", and bought the TF101. Although WiFi wasn't bad on my Prime, it is better on my TF101. My TF101 also performs flawlessly, and doesn't have any of the common issues some of the Primes suffer from. I'm happy I "downgraded".
I am in the same situation. I was contemplating the TF101 vs TF201. It was not an issue of money, though availability became an issue as TF201 stock got sold out. I just wanted a flawless Internet experience so having poor wifi was not good. It seems like Asus is in flux right now so better to get a stable machine. I will see what happens at the end of the year, maybe upgrade to TF700. I originally got a Windows tab which actually was not that bad of a touch experience. I had the Acer W500 which is the same form factor as the prime basically with the 10" tab and keyboard dock. It was also heavy, slow and the battery life was poor (<5 hours). I think the TF101 will be a lot of fun.
try the squeeze trick before returning. takes a couple seconds and ive heard it helps a lot of plagued tf201s. cant find the vid but just squeeze just above the entire top of the screen just enough to cause a little light bleed

But that isn't going to help the OP's pixel issue and pixel deformities are annoying as ****.
Just return it and either get the TF101 or wait for the TF700T. Really the TF101 should be much easier to find and much cheaper. You'll have less of a hassle finding it and it's tried and true. It was much too early for them to release the prime so it's not like you're losing something.
Interesting to see that I am not alone on this.
This week I returned my 3rd prime and was very close to say "Screw Asus" and look for a Windows tablet but then I thought why not give the original Transformer a shot. I got it yesterday and have to admit I am really impressed.
Everything works as it should, it has two USB ports instead of one, stereo speakers instead of one, a better hardware keyboard (at least in my opinion), the USB transfer rate seems to be much better, the screen seems to be more responsive and it is much cheaper.
And the funniest thing of em all: I don´t know why but it is even faster than Prime. Of course not in 3D games or stuff like that or 1080p videos etc.
But while doing normal usage, e-mailing, writing, watching videos, browsing etc.
And I havn´t even tried a custom ROM, yet.
Just to make this clear: I am comparing ICS Prime (three actually) to HC original Transformer. Which makes no sense to me.
So, the only few things that are better about the Prime are (in my opinion):
- It looks better
- It "look" better manufactured
- Slightly better battery life
- Slightly better display
- Smaller and lighter
And since I am planning to keep my Transformer only for a few months until the Padfone or the TF700 is out I think this was a really good decision.
prime is a prototype.. not ready for the public. it tells others that quad core is now possible/.
Came lookin' for the same question/answer. Have the T201 and has issues like 80% of everyone else. Bluetooth/wifi is a joke on the 201...I love using it for remote access to my Win7 box, but seems that when I'm streaming Spotify, if cuts out and loses connection. And, this is upstairs from my router 15 feet a way.
I guess it's time to research the h*** out of the T101 like I did the 201. 399 at bestbuy this week...will search for cheaper this week . . .
Me Too...Prime's WiFi WeaK Compared to Other Tablets
Thank you OP and other posters.
I too am about to return my Prime, and was wondering about the TF101 as a replacement.
I don't do much gaming but decided to buy the Prime since it was supposed to be state-of-the-art. Well, the WiFi just isn't as good as other tablets I've tested, both the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and HTC Flyer get better WiFi at distance. I've moved my router and changed router settings so I get satisfactory WiFi now at home, but I'm worried about weak WiFi when I travel.
Son (who has the Galaxy 10.1) says I should return the Prime. So, now what to get? The Galaxy 10.1 looks like a very strong performer (especially so in WiFi), but was looking to see if the Original Transformer TF101 would be a good fit for me.
Just wondering what you all think? What will I "lose" if I "downgrade" to the Tf101?

Some pixels and the buggy software lol
I like Samsung, but galaxy does not have dock and Samsung had minimal support updates. Asus is spot on with their updates, despite the delay on ics for the tf101..

And what do you mean by buggy software? Is the Original Transformer's software more buggy, than the Primes? In what way? Or do you mean the Prime has more buggy software?
Thanks for any thoughts on my possible "downgrade".

So, the only few things that are better about the Prime are (in my opinion):
- It looks better
- It "look" better manufactured
- Slightly better battery life
- Slightly better display
- Smaller and lighter

In short: If you can handle the size/weight and looks of the TF101, you should get it. Just my two cents.
EDIT: And of course the Prime´s camera is better and it behaves better with 3D games etc...at least in theory.

You are right, my bad they do have the same size screen (I was thinking of the TF700) but the TF Prime has the 'Super IPS' screen and has more brightness (nits), but the ICS update has been bricking people's Primes, it also has crappy wifi/bluetooth as reported..
I say the TF101 is a safer bet, the TF201 is more a prototype as mentioned..not really ready for commercial consumption, more like the icebreaker paving the way for the real cargo ship (TF700)

That is true, too. The question is if it worth it.
I mean if you turn Super IPS mode + highest brightness settings you might easily get a sunburn from it...I don´t need that setting.
Your only really option is to get the TF101. Everything else is not preferable based on price : features or price : performance ratio.
With the Galaxy Tab 10.1 you're paying too much for what you're getting, that is good hardware and a good design but no or little updates. The hardware is roughly comparable to the TF101 so really all that you're getting out of it is good design, no expansion slot, no/little updates and pay more. Do not want.
The TF101 hits the sweet spot in terms of what you get for how much you pay and you're guaranteed to get ICS and most likely more updates after that. We've been getting updates for HC like what, once or twice every two months? Don't even think you'll see anything close to that with Sammy. Maybe one update a year or two.
The TF201 is good looking and good hardware and it shares the same Asus speed in terms of upgrades but the connectivity and build quality + launch issues leave a lot to be desired. It's confidence shaking, would I want to keep a tablet where the Wi-Fi and GPS are already **** and there's a possibility it might get worse? For $500 and with a successor already on the horizon? Do not want. Really it was a rushed, piece of garbage that's DOA. This is what happened when they decided to rush something rather than do their time with more R&D and releasing it in a more suitable time frame. They should have released the Prime when the TF700T is scheduled to be released (whatever date that is) which in my eyes puts the TF700T as what the Prime should have been, AKA the fix.

Amen to that.
Plus, I hope the same applies to the Padfone.
The TF101 has much better WiFi than the Prime.

Honestly, the TF101 will likely be better than that successor model, too. The latter has far too high screen resolution, which will lead to problems in some apps, give no advantage at all in most apps (just extra blur from scaling), and cause eye strain in some apps. As an added bonus, it'll reduce battery life and make everything slower.
All so Asus can put a bigger-is-better number on a spec sheet.
They got it right with the TF101, by and large. They're struggling to invent a reason for people to upgrade, and not doing a great job of it.
Being an early adopter of the TF101(my first one was a B40) I had to deal with the pain of owning a new model. Asus has been right on time with their updates and they pay attention to what people post on the internet. It is my opinion that in a few months the Prime will be ready for prime time. But until then I will do my best to wear out my B50 Transformer. It is a great little device totally stock.

[Q] Is the nexus 7 really worth buying despite its flaws ??

Despite all the flaws (i think there are many including the screen lift dead pixel unresponsive touch screen)is it worth buying ? Am getting it from usa thru my friend to india but what if i have a problem with the device ? Cant replace it ! I fear that alot Pls help me in deciding to get one or not !
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770919
I've read reviews that the device had issues with the screen lifting. I've had a couple tablets, nook color, nook tablet, kindle fire and I've tested out the new kindle fire HD. Out of all of them I LOVE the nexus 7 and none can touch the nexus 7 imo. I bought one last week and I haven't had any problems. Im sure other members will chime in about there opinions. I would buy it if i were you. I hope my comment helps

Buy it. Test it in the shop. If not good ask for refund....
I love mine and I live in Europe. Bought in usa....
I don't think the newer models have as many issues, my c80 is great and to me this device just keeps getting better, the latest update is also working great on my end so I recommend it highly, its really a steal at the price too

I love my Nexus 7. It is amazing! It is totally worth it. The unresponsive touch screen is a software issue, which will probably be fixed. I just got a new update, and it seems to be working well so far. If it happens, you just turn the screen off and then back on. (Just sleep mode) I have had no hardware issues with mine, and I love it. It is totally worth it. Go Google!
Asus/Google Nexus 7
CPU: Nvidia Tegra 3 w/ 4 Cores + 1 Low Power Core @ 1.2 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce w/ 12 Cores @ 416 MHz
RAM: 1 GB of DDR3 RAM
ROM: Nexus 7 4.1.1 JRO03D Stock ROM (Rooted)
Kernel: Stock
I've had mine almost a month now and I haven't seen any flaws. I've been beyond happy with mine. No screen lifting, no wonky display, nothing. Buy one.
The N7 I'm getting is a C80, chances of an issue?
Nexus 7 won the Gadget and Tablet of the year. Flaws you are mentioning are minor and you can always swap Nexus 7 with a new one if it's faulty. There is no other 7'' tablet out there which is as powerful as N7. You will love every bit of it....

My Nexus 7 doesn't have any issues. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I would just buy it and hope you get one without any issues.
hmm - maybe i would not buy it again...
Display calibration is very bad (washed out colors, bad gamma) -> http://www.displaymate.com/Tablet_7inch_ShootOut_1.htm
Even the cheaper Amazon Kindle Fire HD has a better display!
Android 4.1.2 unfortunately is still a little bit laggy compared to iOS 6 or Windows Phone 7.5.
Only stock-launcher runs pretty smooth - Apps (even chrome) are laggy and have input-lag...
Pixel density is not so good too - you can see pixels if your eyes are nearer than 40cm - that´s much better on iPad 3 (and probably iPad mini).
This make fonts look a little bit blurry ...
The speaker sounds a little bit tinny too (also better on ipad).
If the display would be better and android would run smoother (it´s a shame with that good cpu/gpu) it would be a very great gadget!
Overall the iPad 3 (and probably iPad mini) is much more perfect. If you are looking only for a cheap device you will maybe satisfied with the N7.
Keep in mind that this site is where people who have problems go to resolve them and/or rant about them, it's definitely not a random sampling. And threads stick around forever, so you can still read about old problems from right when the N7 first came out... the circuit-board has been rev'd, what, 2-3 times since then? And there are a couple of people who seem to have limitless time to stir up the hornet's nest and rally others to their cause (which is, apparently in one notable case, complete misery)... again, not representative of the vast numbers of people who have had zero problems with the N7. That's the thing about confirmation bias... very few people who are having no problems pop by to say "I am having no problems" (we're too busy using the thing to bother). And now we have threads where we are being told that people who have non-problematic N7's just 'think' they have no problems, but they are really just too stupid to notice them... yeah. So...
My wife bought a Nook, then I bought a Kindle. Then the N7 came out, and after playing with it for a couple of days I sent the Kindle back... a bit prematurely, because my wife then sent back her Nook and got a Kindle. All other things being equal, this probably could have been predicted - I need an Android tablet that I can hack to my heart's content, and she needs a vector for the easy procurement and consumption of ebooks, MP3s, and movies. But having tried all three of those devices, I found that none of them was particularly flawed compared to the others... they all had minor problems, most of which were resolved or worked around with a google search; we did have to send the first Nook back when every 8th row of pixels started flickering on and off, but the replacement was fine in that regard... it just didn't fit our usage needs as well as the others.
At this point, if I was still in the market for a tablet the only thing that would keep me from buying a Nexus 7 is the rumored larger-storage version or even the 10" version (though really I find that the 7" tablets have cut down on how much I use both my iphone and my laptop, so the 7" format seems perfect to me. 32GB of storage would be nice though.)

coming from tf700t

Hi,
getting rid of my tf700t due to terrible stability problems and Asus not being one jot of help. I had sworn never to touch an Asus product again but seem v limited for options when considering a high-powered and high res screen.
Can people confirm that both performance and stability on this tablet is much improved over the tf700 as I cant put up with random reboots again?
Oh, and does CIFS work as may then just get the 16gb version?
Cheers

Some people have random reboots. I dont know about the frequency comapred to tf700 tho. (I dont have random reboots at all) I can respond with "yes" to all other questions
Cant speak to the stability as I've been running CM10 on mine since day 2... but its having used both its definitely faster. If you dont mind the lack of a keyboard dock or SD card slot, its definitely a step up in every regard.

From what I've read Asus used really cheap flash storage in their TF201/300/700 tablets, which is pretty much the source of all their speed issues. The extra ram doesn't hurt though, and while the CPU is only dual-core, its based on ARM's A15 instead of A9 like the tegra.

Cheers. Just been checking the reviews on Tom's hardware and he doesn't give the screen a very good rating, complaining that the colours are much more vibrant on the ipad. Bit of a bummer as apart from this, there's bugger all on the market of a decent spec.
Can anyone make a favourable comparison to the new ipad's screen?

The tf700t and n10 use the same DDR3 RAM.
But the n10 is a HUGE step up from the tf700t.
Even if the Tegra 3 was clocked at the same speed Exynos' 2 cores are still about twice as fast as Tegras 4 cores. Before I got the n10 I was considering the tf700t mainly for the expandable storage and the cool keyboard dock with extra battery. In retrospect I made the right choice, 32GB is plenty and I have a case with bluetooth keyboard.

If you are sick of reboots I'd wait to see if next software version fixes it. I'm on my second device and they both reboot. 4.2.2 decreased it so far to about every 2 days for me. Like you, I have a low tolerance coming from a tf101 that had SOD issues after upgrade. Do some searching. Plenty of people say it reboots. Plenty say it doesn't. Which will you be?

Definitely just my opinion, but I love my nexus 7 & my nexus 10, and my nexus 4 for what its worth, but I have worked with practically every major tablet brand/model/manufacturer (in usa) including my tf700 Asus and don't get me wrong my Asus is great but its just not close to my nexus. Some of this is due to the development available on both and the lack of development I guess you could say on my Asus. I mean all three of my Asus tablets are still going strong (my tf300, my 201, and my 700) but finding a good stable ROM with features or ui I like has been more difficult at certain times. That's not to say I haven't had any issues with the nexus 10 ROMs or anything, but its never been too much of a problem for me to just find a new or updated ROM and things always seem to run better in general. Of course every user has different experiences on every tablet especially when it comes to custom ROMs and other mods, so again this is just my experience/opinion.... The only feature that's missing from nexus models to me is the expandable memory source of a micro SD card, I've always loved having that option on phones and tablets. But lately there's no shortage of decent ROMs on the nexus and other mods are also not very difficult to add if you need them. I use my nexus 10 kind of as my every day driver and go-to tablet for the most part. I teach a class for beginner android users locally and most of the time I use the nexus because its reliable and has good battery life.
Currently running nexus 10 with twrp rec, ROM is rasbeanjelly latest build v4.2.2-r1(might switch it up with diff ROM, but still kinda like this build), kept kernel that rasbeanjelly normally uses, and keep the nexus toolkit by mskip loaded on my pc in case I need or want to make any quick changes or have any boot issues it just makes things easier with toolkit---thanks again mskip.

Feeling that myTF101 was getting a little outdated, I decided to upgrade to the TF700t. I returned it after a few days after so many headaches. It would lag continuously no matter which ROM i loaded on there. The web browsing experience was lackluster at best despite the many tweaks i implemented. Also no ability to relock the bootloader after Asus latest update was the last straw since it would have voided my warranty indefinitely.
I decided to spend the little bit of extra money on the N10 with bluetooth keyboard case and I feel like i made the right decision. Everything is so smooth and speedy withno lags whatsover. I can even relock the bootloader if i need to.
I know I dont miss having the keyboard dock even though it wouldve helped with the battery life. But what's the point of having extra battery life if the user experience is lackluster to begin with?
I can confirm that this is a better tablet than the 700. that thing was a piece of crap all together. after extended use I found the wifi to become crap in and out. the thing lagged all the time. I can go on forever. I believe the nexus 10 is much more stable and quick.
