Well it's now 2013 which means new line of smartphones in the next few months, to temp us to upgrade from our 2012 smartphones.
I've had my S3 since June, & tbh I don't personally feel the need to upgrade it to whatever comes out soon, as my S3 does everything i need it to atm & i don't see that changing anytime this year at least.
Ok 4G in the UK from other networks will be out at some point, & at a premium rates for a while, so the likes of Giffgaff ect won't see this until probably next year, and 3G in my area is good enough for the moment.
I also personally don't think 1gig of memory will become a limiting factor, not this year anyhow on software, but i could be wrong if game developer's decided to get to best from this year line up of top smartphones.
Now there no saying i won't upgrade as im a sucker for new tech, but i do feel the Galaxy S3 is still good enough for this year at least.
So what are your plans to you intend sticking with the S3 for 2013 or are ya gonna go upgrade to the SIV or whatever else is out this year?
I'll upgrade. Not sure to what though
I'll upgrade for sure... S4 or Note 3.
Definitely upgrading
Most probably to the s4

Everyone will upgrade eventually, the s4 isnt due for another 5 months, alot of things can happen in that time
I will upgrade to S4 just to continue my collection of the S -> SIV and higher ^_^
i will upgrading S4 or Note3
i will not.
I'll be most likely sticking with my S3. Previously I kept my HTC Desire 2 years so I'd expect to keep it at least that long. In the end the poor internal memory did that phone for me. I don't have that problem this time so who knows I may keep it longer.

Yep, didn't realise how lucky I was because of the Nexus S helping with Galaxy S development. It was quite a shock with my S3 with how bad it was development wise. Next phone I choose, will be influenced heavily by how friendly it is for the devs. Touchwiz is simply not for me. Pure Android/Cyanogenmod is more up my street.
I think I'll pass SGS IV. I'm more interested in so-called X-Phones that Google will make. I know it's still just a rumor, but I can wait as I don't think SGS III will grow old that fast. It's still packing a very strong CPU & GPU.
I won't be upgrading as I will not be eligible for an upgrade until at least the end of 2014.
Jeez, I just got the S3
Upgrading to S4, defo

I think I will upgrade my phone, but I doubt it would be SGS4. The next google-motorola phone is what I want, hope there won't be such problems with distribution as with Nexus 4
Won't be upgrading this year. My contract still runs to August 2014. Will likely upgrade to Nexus at that point.

That's what I'm thinking too
I'll definitely upgrade. The S3 is suffering from the too small memory of 1 MB, which makes the phone lag too much, if you run a lot of applications.

it's a big upgrade from the galaxy s2 so if your not interested in another phone like Htc one or sony xperia Z then you should get it , i know i will
My note n7000 has some juice left in it so i will wait for a note 3 and youm technology. If its size fits me well then i will get a note. If note3 is any bigger than 5.9 i will simply downgrade to 4.99. Though i love my notes 5.3 display.

In the same boat.. Have the i9100 and skipped the S3. Debating between the S4, One and Z..
You should definitely update. S2 is yesterday's news. Which phone to upgrade to is your decision to make.
Definitely upgrade bro. The s2 is old news now. Two generations behind. I'm going to upgrade from an HTC One S.

If you are interested in the Samsung's technolog in S4, I think S4 is a great upgrade. HTC One or Sony Xperia Z are also another options, but my suggestion is choose S4 if you decide to upgrade.
What was it about the S3 that you didn't like? And what does the S4 have that makes it desirable over the S3? I'm sure if you answer this you'll have your answer.

I owned Xperia Z currently, has been using HTC flagship phones (Sensation/One X) also have S3.. I will be getting S4 for my wife haha...
I have a very bad experience with HTC after sales service.. might not be returning to HTC anymore.. The fool me twice..
Bought two flagship phone and was downgraded the flagship status after a few weeks owning it..
Tried Xperia Arc before now using Z, UI wise is not as nice as Sense and TouchWiz.. but acceptable with less rubbish...
I would definitely consider the upgrade if I was you. My wife has an s2 and the s4 is a massive upgrade.
Maybe not
I am using a HTC Sensation from 2 years ago, and I find the phone still able to meet most of my needs (except for the battery time :crying. I am not a crazy app user, but I do use some essential apps like camera, IM, evernote, forum, and occasional gaming as well. The phone is definitely slow compared with S3, Note 2, but does it bother me enough so i want to change my phone? NO.
I say unless you have heaps of extra cash that you don't care much for the cost, then upgrade; otherwise you can still get a good 1 - 2 years out of your S2 (which is a better phone than my sensations)
how about comming from an S3
Coming from S3, not really worth it IMHO. Most of the S4 software features will be coming to S3 in an update soon. But if you have a 2011 device like me, definitely worth it. It's a massive leap

coming from an S3...meh...I bet all of the gesture options could be available through hacks in the near future. So some people might not want to because it isn't that much of an improvement other than software. That being said, I'm the type of person that flocks to the best screen available. M personally, I would upgrade just because of the screen itself.

I hear ya. I have an S3, and just the other day went to T-Mobile and played with the Nexus 4. Oh man that screen is so much nicer. I don't think I'm gonna stick around with Samsung screens anymore. I'll see what the S4 is about, but if its anything remotely similar to the S3 its done. IPS LCD is so nice and bright. Makes me sad to look at my blue tinted S3, even though I'm using a custom AOSP ROM with a color fix for the screen, still not the same.
I can't decide between the S4 or HTC ONE >.<

:good:
Been reading a lot about their differences and still can't get a clue as which one to buy. Its been more than a month since S4 is released and generally speaking, I am looking to buy S4 not specifically to use 4G, but for general use, mostly apps, a few games (not a hardcore mobile gamer) and also interesting mods.
The other day I came across a game for android specially mentioning it will work only in Adreno GPU. This quite surprised and confused me as to if in future, apps and games will be customised based on CPU/GPU?
Provided the issues that have been reported, mainly the overheating and battery drain, is it wise to wait for a month or two so that Samsung release a second production batch of S4 with these issues fixed? Or there won't any hardware fixes for S4 anymore?
So which model has a better future? (leaving the 4G part).
Hope I get a reply as I am sure the highly knowledgeable and vast users of this forum can help ease my confusion.

Not going to flash even if they release 4.3. I prefer to be on CM. Much more smooth and better battery life.
Good said Modej,
I also using AOKP but with some touchwiz features 1. Because I like it touchwiz launcher.
And Second I want in AOKP that be another lockscreen but I think it's not possible :/
We only need egl blobs and kernel source from GS3 4.3 to run CM10.2 well (not stable but pretty decent like CM10.1).

Agree and disagree with your comment. 100% agree with the smoothness part but sammy 4.1.2 roms with a good stock kernel offer the best battery life (Up to 7hrs screen on time, my record was 6 hrs screen-on time spread over about 1 day)
What a lame excuse for not updating.
Sincerely shame on you Samsung.
I think it's not a surprise. Sammy couldn't give us usable exynos drivers for oasp. So they probably couldn't figure it out themselves. Looks bad anyway. ..

Unfortunately, based on what other brands are doing, we cannot blame so much Samsung. We got last official update few weeks ago for a device which is in the market from beginning of 2011. Of course who bought the device one year after it was in the market (like me!) got a better price but having more or less one year of software support and counting mostly on XDA community to keep the device alive.
We should blame who has promised 18 months of updates but failed to keep their promises (I know HTC for example).
Most of the cases there are not technical reasons not updating devices but just marketing. I would be happy having 24 months as minimum software support.
Correct me if Im wrong but I havent read any on that article that it is official? So why go on rampage blaming Samsung on the statement which might be a fallacy? You will just stress yourself.

4.3 seems a little far fetched. ....considering the aging of our device .I doubt Samsung will push any further updates for us ...
And its so silly. They said that s2+ will get the update bcuz it has more power than S2 (seems lik a marketing strategy 2 me)...
On tge the latest report it says Samsung owns 47% of all android devices.i think out of those 30% represents S2, S3 & S4 .
S2 still has a very large scale of users , its a shame Samsung is leaving us in the dark..

But dont blame the Manufacturers too much
Everyone should think back to the Times where Android wasnt there
Symbian times for Example... Updates came pretty Slow BUT they came and where everytime pretty Bugfree and with Really Good Performance and all that
The Update Floods on the Android OS doesnt makes it any Easyer for the Manufacturers nor the Devs i think
Google makes everything very Complicated for everyone, and i am sure that all Manufacturers first gonna bring out the newest versions to the newest Phones
Why ...Pfff Because they Have to keep The NEW things more up to date then the Old .
Well I know other nonnexus android manufacturers are much worse. I'm not even sure the HTC Sensation and Xperia arc of 2011 received 4.1.2 yet.
But seriously samsung can't compare with those manufacturers as they are not as big as samsung.
Samsung should see how apple gives software updates to old phones as apple is the only manufacturer as big as samsung and hence their main competitor.

Here is where you miss the point.
Apple has like what 5 devices to support?
3GS, 4, 4S, 5
Whereas Samsung has a portfolio the size of an Apple Farm.. XD
So they focus on the newer models which is natural, to boost their sales and try to keep up with others.
And while they do, Google keeps launching updates after updates.
One such example is,
Galaxy S Advance, It was supposed to get ICS but by the time it's turn came, ICS was outdated, so Samsung directly gave it GB to JB.
I think we will get our 4.2 update somewhere around my birthday in Nov'13

I think what samsung should instead do is to give the best support for those who paid more for the premium Galaxy S line and note line, otherwise their image will be no better than their mid range and budget phones line.
It's their own fault since the beginning actually. Their flagships so far is S, S2, S3, S4, Note 1 and Note 2. However, each flagship got so many variants. For example, the S4 has 14 variants including the zoom and active according to wikipedia.
Samsung might be able to convince people to buy their product. However, I'm afraid they can't convince people to buy their product for the second time.

Not exactly looking forward whether Samsung will push an update for us but they've got a point there. it is taking a while. I played with the 10.1 tab pro or whatever with the same specs and it runs much smoother.
It's odd. Here's the press release Samsung U.S. issued dated February 18. Not a single device on the list except for the N3 and SGS4 which were already in the process of receiving KitKat has received it.
Since Samsung literally floods the market with devices, I'm sure they're having a tough time keeping them straight to update. I'm sure we'll get it sometime soon. I hope.
The new Samsung tab 4 line-up are all loaded with KitKat...
but not for us

a press release confirming 4.4 KitKat will soon be available for the following devices across all U.S. networks.
These are the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy S4, S4 Mini, S4 Active and S4 Zoom, plus the Galaxy S3 and S3 Mini.
The Galaxy Mega and Galaxy Light are also listed.
Moving on to tablets, the Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy Note 10.1, and finally, the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition
will all be updated to version 4.4.
Samsung says all carrier variants will get the update.
The rollout begins on February 18 and will continue for several months. <===== "Several months" OMG !!!

I'm assuming in that they will hold off as long as possible to release the update. They want to sell the new tab and note pro lines which makes sense. I'm shocked to see the new low end tab 4 lineup has it. Seems very fishy.
I think it's the same business tactic Verizon is using for the kitkat update in the bite 3 which annoys me. Mark my words they will release 4.4.2 to Verizon on day 15 post S5 release. Maximize their sales on the phone. So April 26 kitkat is released to those of us including myself with a note 3 on vzw. Sorry for the rant.

Not really. The only device(s) more expensive than the N10.1-14 are the 12" Pros. From a margin perspective I can't see the Tab Pro 10.1 making Samsung any more money than the N10.1-14.

Google's finally started to exert themselves in leveraging "free Android" against access to Google Apps (Play content apps [movies, music, books, etc.], Google+, Google Play Services, and Chrome). They recently published requirements that, in order to get access, OEM's had to use the latest version of Android on new devices. In addition, the Samsung/Google cooperation agreement seems to have affected Samsung's s/w direction. Magazine UX went from a replacement UI when it was announced with multiple pages pre-configured including being featured as the primary home page to "Content Home" at launch. Half the widgets have been removed, the tiles that could launch any installed app are gone, and it's now one pre-configured page of news set as the last of the home pages. Samsung Hub which probably annoyed Google most as a competitor to Play Content is also gone with the Pros. Leaks of major changes to TW for the SGS5 never came to fruition either.
So something's fishy but my guess is it's more of a political realignment between titans than something to do with any singular device or series of devices. And if as part of the agreement Samsung's adjusting the content in future s/w releases and updates it could explain the delay. This is all supposition on my part but it's odd that a company with Samsung's resources hasn't pushed updates to over a dozen devices they've committed updates for in over two months.

I think that I'm not stretching when I say that probably more than 90% of phone and tablet buyers have absolutely no ideas what version of the operating system is on their device. Holding off on KitKat for a Note 10.1 has nothing to do with sales. It has to do with priorities and resources. I know from experience that good developers are put to work on new products and so-so developers are put on maintenance projects. I'm sure that Samsung is no different.
What I really want is a CM 10.1.. much better than any stock Samsung ROM. But I also see no development in that direction. There are too many devices out there. It's becoming chaos and just very few can catch the time and resources of the developers. Samsung products get worse and worse in quality, Android messier and less truly "open" while Goggle itself more and more controlling.. the whole thing is a mess. I am tired and disappointed. My first original Galaxy Tab 7 was and is still king. Surely getting slower by all current measures but STILL working like new. Amazing build quality, almost 4 years of development and still going.. I'm running 4.4.2 on it, flawlessly.. how ironic this is..

Well you can always try and start development for yourself.
The hardware in the note 10.1 is used in a lot of other devices that are already running KK so all necessary software and drivers should be available.
In theory it wouldn't be all that difficult to port the note pro 12 rom for example. I'm thinking about maybe giving it a go but I'm not really sure where to start.

In theory it wouldn't be all that difficult to port the note pro 12 rom for example. I'm thinking about maybe giving it a go but I'm not really sure where to start.

Same here.. totally agree with you. A 10.1 build should not be so difficult to get together as the hardware is so similar to other machines. That would solve all problems once and for all. But like U, I have no idea where to start.. alone I can't do it. Small team would be great. I'm even willing to pitch some money to get this started and everyone motivated. I am a few days away from selling this tab and giving up. It's useless like it is for me. And I need make the dpi higher because all too small and badly formatted as it is with some of the apps I use at the default 320dpi.. but "darling" Samsung has done something further to this tab's main apps and framework so it will positively NOT boot at higher dpi settings (lower values OK, just not higher).. I tried all possible ways, dpi changing apps and ROMs (I have a P-605). No way. This tab is totally useless not me.. and not to mention I have a disastrous yellow tint on the display and no way to adjust or calibrate that either. Samsung is on the way out of my life.. we get s... t software, no updates and impossible to even try fix it.. is glorious.. I'm done and done..

I'd be up for giving it a try with some people.
I have a strong background in IT and software and have some limited programming knowledge so I should be able to get all this.
This guide might be a nice place to start:

Maybe we can set up a seperate thread if we can get some people on board.

I'm totally up for it. Count me in and let's do it. But remember there are 2 fundamentally different machines.. the Exynos and the Qualcomm/LTE (like mine) are different animals in many ways..

I totally agree, howerver I hope the porting process will not be that much different.
A succesful port on one model will probably make the porting process for the other a lot easier to pull off.

Let's start a new thread and can some talent gathered and together to get this done! And U want developan overclocking kernel for the P-605. Qualcomm CPUs can go very high.. my HP TouchPad with a venerable Dual-core 1.2GHz running KitKat is overclocked to 2.1GHz stable. I've had this machine for 3 years.. First Gingerbrea, then ICS, then finally CM 10.1. Initially overclocked to 1.7, later 1.9 and finally 2.1 wwith KitKat. Yeah, it runs hot.. but who cares? Rock solid for 3 years and going strong. I bet the 2.3GHz Snapdragon can go easily past 2.5 or 2.7.. and this Tab is large.. plenty of space to dissipate heat.. If we can get CM 10.1 running and push the CPU, this will be an amazing machine..
