4.2 OTA Screen Flicker - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock N7 and accepted the over the air standard update to 4.2. Now I'm getting quite a bit of screen flicker. Has anyone else seen this?

Nope. That's pretty strange.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

I thought so too.

Yeah I've noticed the increase too, coming from custom ROMs and modified kernels I think it's understandable. However googles failure to fix this is disappointing.

However just as I completed my post I remembered my fix, disabling prism. So its probably a combination for me.
That's helped quite a bit

How do you disable prism?

I have updated my nexus 7 to 4.2 OTA. And i can confirm, with sorrow, that 4.2 ruined the tabled for me. I had some minor flicker with 4.1.2 but was very rare and i was OK with it. But now it's crazy. The strange thing is that the screen does not flicker constantly. It flickers 4/5 times and it settels down. This is in every single app i run, even on home screen. WiFI is off, the tablet was factory reseted ... this sux ... i send a mail to Asus to see that they know about it ...

I had to use Tegra Prism on 4.1 to fix the flicker - which is caused by the brightness changing slightly (still happens if you turn auto-brightness off).
I haven't updated to 4.2 yet (too many bugs) so maybe Google made prism more aggressive or something?
It's a paid app though, but you got 15minutes to test if it works or claim the refund.

Same. I don't have a problem rooting if I can do it without unlocking the bootloader... time to read some root threads

I ended up unlocking/rooting and installing the Tegra PRISM Toggle. I can confirm that fixed the issue.

I think you shouldn´t suggest to flash ANY LP1-6 kernel anymore. Today, everybody should know the danger of them...

Ultrafine! The only one thing missing is the possibility to change the DPI!!
Works well enough but Samsung seem to have tried to hide the simple elegance of stock ICS in some ways. Thinking of going back to CM9. Not much of a pen user anyway ,

Loving the ICS release except for one thing.....
I toggle silent/vibrate on and off quite a lot. When I do this, using the long-press power-button menu, some wonderful person has decided that I am so clueless, I need a confirmation dialogue box.
"Warning! Silent mode will be enabled OK/Cancel"
Gasp! Really!?!?! I had no idea that would happen when I purposely held down the power button and then with delicate intent selected the desired silent-mode function.
Just. Wow. It's supposed to be a shortcut, and Samsung just ruined it. Of course, I flashed completely stock without root, so I'm probably stuck with this until somebody figures out how to root this stock ICS release. (Maybe they have already, I'll do a search).
It's a small complaint to most people, but I toggle silent on and off many times a day. This is a huge annoyance. I'll see if there are any lockscreen toggles I can get - actually, EVERY single android release or skin should have silent/vibrate toggle on the lock screen, as it was in the earlier android releases. Motorola seems to be the only one who realises this. Sheesh....
Generally good, am upset by the lack of 160 dpi/tablet conform, just be aware if you're going for lower dpi's you'll face fc's

[Q] Are Issues Fixed on White Nexus 4

Hello, I had a Nexus 4 until a few days ago,While I was in LOVE with it I sold it for a few reasons, the 2 main ones, were
-Proximity Sensor During Calls
-Mega Poor battery (even though I was running LINARO builds with Franco kernel etc...)
Were Any of these "fixed" on the "new" White Version?, can someone report on it?
Depending on the reports, I may buy one again!
Thanks!

[Q] [HELP] LG G2 (Not Rooted) Screen Jitters after updating KitKat

Hello,
It seems i have a problem with my G2 after updating Kitkat. First i want to clarify by updating Kitkat means that after i updated my Kitkat from official updates from LG Update Apps. I worried people misunderstood it for im upgrading from Jelly Bean to Kitkat. Not that, im already using Kitkat from maybe around Feb and have no problem at all. And 2 days ago [17 May 2014, in South East Asia] there is some update for the Kitkat, and I installed it, the description for the update is just "Optimization for Apps")
My problem is exactly the same with this Youtube video down here, this video describe "screen flickering" but actually its not flickering (because there is no problem with the brightness), but the screen randomly move vertically, like there is an earthquake inside of that phone
Oops because im a new member (yes, I jin this forum because of this problem of mine :'( ) it seems I cant post url from outside.
Please search the video on youtube titled "Lg g2 screen flicker" by Chris Eastoe
So, its happen yesterday for the first time, and i realize if its start to happen what i have to do is turn of the screen for a while (either turn of the phone or ether lock it) and then after i turn the screen on again the jitters stop... for a while... eventually the jitter will start to happen again and i just have to turn off the screen, wait, and turn it on again.
Do anybody have any Idea what happen to my phone? my LG G2 is not rooted, and i use stock launcher. i probably install LINE DECO for the icon customization (even though I already install it like 1 month ago and have no problem until recently), but i already uninstalled that this morning, and its still happening
Thank you
cheers :fingers-crossed:
Still no response yet? Up up
I live in SEA also but can't help you with your problem because my phone has had issues with the touchscreen starting a couple of months after I purchased it. I also received the update a couple of days ago and I was hoping that it would finally resolve my touchscreen issues but no such luck. Mine also jitters, freezes, and experiences ghost touches on a random basis although they all stop when I turn off the screen and turn it back on. Touchscreen issues are common with the G2, I don't know what to tell you. I've sent mine back twice but it still does the same thing.

It seems my problem is not as bad as yours... My touchscreen still works properly, and even the screen is jittering like crazy mt LG G2 still works smoothly. The Only problem is the display on screen.
I try to take a snapshot of my homescreen when my screen jittering like crazy and send it to my friend. But on my friend phone the homescreen snapshot i took is normal.
Can somebody help, please
Root it with ioroot, recovery with autorec, and install furnace (jdi version if white lines) - or exchange it ?

Been on 4.4.2 for a few days, today my stock Bell (D803) started jittering and garbled up so bad it looked like the screen was damaged. It was a bit warm from being plugged in so i shut it down. Now it's cooled off and video jitters only slightly. I also tried re-calibrating motion sensor but seems to still have a slight jitter. (note: it's not the brightness flicker problem, the segments of the video on the screen literally shakes!)
Was thinking phone was damaged some how but now i see it's not the only one with the problem since last update.
Gee, good thing we own $700 smartphones!
I don't usually root my phones until the warranty is up on them so it's still Bell stock.

Well, thanks for the heads up edgarpoe, Factory Wipe Reset also one of my option, but considering the effort it takes to recovery all the data, the backup, and etc. and find the problem is still there would have waste a lot of time...

Nope not any better, infact it's worse. When it sits screen is ok when you wake it, but after about 5 min it starts jittering randomly. The longer screen is on the worse it gets until it shows sections of video that looks like old analog tv static. Turn screen off for a while and it's cleared up again for a few minutes.
Maybe something is overheating? Do you have a case on your phone? Mine has OtterBox case.
I even tried "playing" with thermal setting in 3845#*803# but did't solve anything :silly:
Don't know, maybe it's time to bring it in...
Ok I think it got scared that I was sending back for warranty because now it's running fine.

I've factory wiped phone 3 times, still had problem. Was almost wondering if after the update, the battery stats were out, if low voltage would cause it. But then phone would have died out of nowhere so don't think that's it. Last night I also recalibrated motion sensor but still had jitters.
Must have been just a glitch in the update.
Bell tech told me 4.4.3 is on its way anyways.
It was acting up this morning at 10, then it sat sleeping unplugged for a few hours (screen off) now it seems problem disappeared.

My phone been steady now for around 6hrs I think. Not sure why yet. Wasn't app related that I know of because one off the reset trials I opted to not install any apps at all and still had jitters.
I've been working the modes, touch screen, and playback pretty good tonight and no more glitches. Was last plugged in 7 hrs ago to 100% and it's now at about 50%

New update P600UEUCNK1

Just got a 7.45MB quick update that had the standard update message - "Stability and security fixes are included. Thank you for choosing Samsung!"
I think it might have fixed the screen mirroring cannot be started bug - haven't had any trouble with it after the update, whereas before it would mostly fail.
Edit: Also noticing a recurrence of Chromecast notifications when casting. Those disappeared after the last update. I think. No crashes so that's great.
Just got the update too. I'm able to screen mirror to my roku3, whereas before the update I'd get hardware errors. Movies now stream, though it gets pixalated. Think that's cause miracast is still in beta for Roku's.
I haven't been able to try out the screen mirroring functions, but I'm glad to say that the homescreen seems more responsive after the update.

I played a full H264 movie on my Microsoft DisplayAdapter and it did not appear pixelated but the tablet was bit slow when the movie was playing- I've got a Roku3 as well, will try it out later.
Battery life seems to be somewhat better after the update - drain is less when using the screen and the tablet continues to be smooth.

Updated last night from NI1. Small bug fix update I'm guessing. Hope it'll fix the sound glitch I've experienced a couple times.

What is your glitch? I get something that happens once in a while where the sound is very low resolution and sounds over modulated.
Seems to happen most after playing Clash of Clans.
I've had it do that once and I've had it sound "sped up" once.
And now there's a 4+ Mb CNK2 update. This is more update than I am used to from Samsung. Hopefully this continues and we get to 5.0.4 fairly sooner than usual
No idea what the update actually fixes.

Just got another update today. K2 at the end of the release and still 4.4.2.
Not much for details included in the description on the update notification, just software enhancement and bug fixes.
Happy to report that NK1 & NK2 are both still rootable with the cf-auto-root made for 4.4.2.
Also, I might be imagining it, but it seems like battery life is better on NK2, especially standby time. CPU is definitely entering deep sleep more often than on any other KitKat build for this device.

TN7 5.1 Lollipop, my concerns and opinions

Just got a fresh update from 4.4.2 to 5.1, here are some of my concerns and opinions so far:
- the main thing that I have noticed is that the colors got a bit washed out or less vivid compared to when I was in Kitkat or is it the same across all lollipop devices? After the discovery of the hidden performance menu by some people here in XDA, you can turn off Tegra Prism there and fix this issue
- the 5.1 stock launcher was the same as the 4.4.2 launcher.
- animations are nice
- IMO, did not noticed much of a speed difference, maybe because our hardware is already powerful to begin with.
- so far battery life remains more or less the same as it was in Kitkat
Well, those are just the things that I have noticed upon my recent updating of my tablet.
Update:
- SD Card Write restrictions is the same as it was in Kitkat, only some apps can write or create files on the SD Card. MS Office for Tablets and TN7's own Write app still can't write or create files to SD Card (or I think it depends on the apps if developers add the ability to write files on the SD Card?)
- No stock gallery and video player app but ES File Explorer may suffice in viewing photos and videos though.

Just got a fresh update from 4.4.2 to 5.1, here are some of my concerns and opinions so far:
- the main thing that I have noticed is that the colors got a bit washed out or less vivid compared to when I was in Kitkat or is it the same across all lollipop devices? This is my first time to get a taste of lollipop so I do not know.
- the 5.1 stock launcher was the same as the 4.4.2 launcher, so I just downloaded google now launcher.
- animations are nice
- IMO, did not noticed much of a speed difference, maybe because our hardware is already powerful to begin with.
- so far battery life remains more or less the same but will continue to check
Well, those are just the things that I have noticed upon my recent updating of my tablet.

The official OTA update. Probably being released by NVidia in waves as I have heard some TN7s still don't have the update yet.
New concern, there is no option to turn off auto brightness not the adaptive brightness. I know you can turn off the adaptive brightness in the settings but no option to turn off auto brightness. It is unpleasing to eyes seeing the screen brightness fluctuating. Never had this problem when I was in kitkat but the fluctuating screen brightness in 5.1 lollipop is only noticeable when brightness set to low levels
Hi, notification and quick settings panels are the same of KitKat or they are lollipop style?

Is the touch working properly in lolipop after being awaken by the magnetic slide cover? A problem in kitkat...

I can't tell as I don't use a magnetic slide cover, I don't know what that is even. Terribly Sorry.
Could you tell us which model you have? I'm hearing that the P-1988 is getting the update, but I've not heard anything yet about the original P-1640. Shame I always seem to be one of the last to get the updates pushed to me considering I pre-ordered this thing in November 2013... no love for early adopters.

It's the official cover for the tablet, and there's been a bug since launch where if the screen wakes from the cover, the touchscreen can become erratic and unresponsive until you lock/wake with the power button. You can test this with any small magnet placed just to the right of the front facing camera... if the bug still exists, removing the magnet to wake the screen should cause the same problem.

I really can't tell but I think it's the P-1988? It only says "Tegra Note 7" in the Model Number.

When you changed your launcher to the google one does it still show the stylus only mode and lasso mode when you remove the stylus?

Yes it still works and other than the washed out screen colors and fluctuating screen brightness that's really noticeable when brightness is set to low level, I have not encountered any other bugs or issues yet.
If you go into the About Tablet section, it should state the Model number. The EVGA Tegra Note I have says it is a P1640 and has not received anything yet. I assume yours may be another branded model?
I did get some sort of OTA ghost announcement a few weeks ago that said I had an update, but it didn't download anything and said I was up to date when I went and checked. Was a bit odd but I am in no rush still. The thing works great for what I do on it.

Thanks for the reply. Still waiting on my Zotac TN7 OTA. Would love to see how this baby runs on ART.

Yeah, if that's what it says then it's the P1988, because the P1640 will actually say TegraNote-P1640. I'm guessing that since the 1988 has a smaller user base and is a little more complicated than the 1640, they're probably starting there to make sure it works before pushing the update to everyone else on the 1640. I sure hope we don't have long to wait!

I had that too! I got so excited, but when I went to install it, it just said I was up to date. Maybe Nvidia pushed their test ROM out by accident and immediately deleted it but with no way to undo the notification that went out.

Did you go into the Display settings? You should be able to turn off auto-brightness there, and in the Power settings you should be able to disable Nvidia's Prism battery saver which will wash out your colors and make the brightness do weird things. Also be sure to check if the color correction is set to sRGB or Native; sRGB is a little more color-accurate, but it has to reduce the color gamut to do this as opposed to using Native which uses the full color gamut of the display.

The adaptive brightness is already off yet the fluctuating brightness still persist. These is no Nvidia Prism battery saver anymore after the 5.1 update. The color correction preset is set to sRGB by default and even when I switch to native it does not make much of a difference to the colors

Oh goodness, I hope they didn't just enable it by default with no way to disable it... it's such a terrible feature. Who would want a little more battery life at the expense of a terrible looking image?
I've Got Tegra Note Cherry Mobile Tegra Note 7 LTE .. but it seems the lollipop update is still not rolling up on my device yet... I hope to see it in the next few days..

The 5.1 update I have got on my Cherry Mobile TN7 (Wifi Only) is only a soak test (according to the Tegra Note community in Google+)...if only I knew that this was just a test I would not have updated but I think this presence of a soak test means that the updating of our TN7s is near
