Hello, guys
I want to know what your views are on trading my iphone 4 16gb for an nexus one? Please don't get carried away with "it's an apple device". so, anyway i want to know your opinion on this.
It depends on what are you looking for in a phone - and then you need to compare, what each device does and how it does - and then decide if it's a good trade.
dollar for dollar i would see this as a poor trade...
What you should do is sell the iphone 4 for cash, then used that cash to buy nexus one + leftover cash.
Both phones can be had for around the same price. Both are really good phones. I wouldn't trade my Nexus for an iPhone 4 for nothing. The Nexus is a rare phone that is completely customizable and personable. I could never find myself stuck with one homescreen layout.
Would I suggest you sell your iPhone 4 for a nexus? Probably not. It could be a good investment as Android Gingerbread is due out shortly and the Nexus might pull in some big dough for having it.
I would suggest that if you want to make the switch to Android (which you should) I would hold off until next year when some of the newer dual-core chips come out.
If you can't wait to get rid of the iPhone 4 (I don't blame you) and you want something now, the Nexus One is a great candidate although good luck finding a AT&T version. The MyTouch HD, G2, EVO, DroidX, and Galaxy S are all good phones. Samsung and Motorola are software update Nazi's. The HTC variants usually have good community base for custom roms and hacks. The G2 runs stock Android which is nice, similar to the Nexus One.
The Nexus One gets its updates directly from Google which is why it is so popular. The others are updated via the Carriers/Manufactures.

don't
trade it with a better phone, like HTC desire HD, Desire Z, Galaxy S ......
Where did he say he was doing a straight swap? He didnt actually mention prices?
Anyway, as said, it depends what you want to do with it, and which OS you prefer. The iphone is undoubtedly more polished, more stable, has a better battery life and higher resale value, and a greater range of games and apps. The camera is slightly better and the screen is noticeably better. As an overall ownership experience, I'd say for "most people" the iphone is clearly better. For a techie like most of the folks on this site, its not so clear cut. The N1, thanks to android is a lot more open and flexible, and certainly seems like its more powerful at times; there is nothing that can't be changed - the iphone is a lot more restricted.
So what do you want out of a phone? Do you want a good device that works nigh perfectly all of the time or are you willing to settle for a few niggles for a device that can be customised to a much greater degree?
Personally, I've got to say, if someone came along and offered to swap me an iPhone 4 for my Nexus One, I'd have to say that I personally would take it. However, in the real world, nobody is going to do that - the best I could hope for would be to hand over £200 and my Nexus One for an iphone 4, and with that in mind, the choice is simple - I'd keep the N1. For me, the IP4 is a better phone overall, but the N1 is easily 90%+ the phone the IP4 is, and for that reason given that I'd have to hand over a large wedge of cash to swap, the choice is reasonably simple. That said, I can't say I haven't sometimes been tempted to go back to an iphone.
Sorry to create a thread, but I was hoping for someone how knows Android well to help me out.
A brief description on my phone history: iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, Galaxy Note, return to iPhone 4 and now iPhone 5.
Upgrade from iPhone 3 to 4 was simple, contract ran out, got a new phone. With the Galaxy Note, I opened a new contract with a fair amount of time remaining on my iPhone contract. However I sold my Note after just 2 months with it. I had some battery issues, performance issues and I did not like the Touch Wizz UI and I did not want to root/flash (Not sure on which one) it. So I went back to my iPhone 4, however I like the look of "stock Android".
iPhone 5 comes out, still paying for the contract I took out for the Galaxy Note (£21.50 Bargain), so I brought the iPhone 5 directly from Apple and am now using that contract on my iPhone 5. My iPhone 4 contract has now ran out. So I have an iPhone 5 on a £21.50 a month contract.
So now that is out of the way, here is my problem (well it's not really). I can sell my iPhone 5 for more than what I paid for it, since there is a shortage at the moment (Well I presume that is why) and ever since the Nexus 7 I have wanted to grab a Nexus device. And now the Nexus 4 has been announced for such a bargain price I am considering giving it a go. Main reason I want to get rid of the iPhone is because I'm a little bored with iOS.
However I had that last time when I got the Galaxy Note, but didn't get on with it. But I always had the option to go back to iOS as I had my iPhone 4. And I can't afford to buy the Nexus 4 without selling the iPhone.
My current setup is very much Apple. I have an iMac and MacBook Air, which does all sync very nicely together with my phone. So my first question is, can Android be connected easily to OSX Mountain Lion? As I couldn't get it to work with my Note when I had that.
I have heard a number of complaints about the Nexus 4, from Android users. The "not enough space" and "can't access battery", well I'm used to that anyway and doesn't bother me. 16GB is easily enough for a phone in my opinion. But I have also heard of over heating issues and relatively poor build quality, which worries me a little.
I know the device being tested may not be final version, but it could also be. On paper, the phone sounds great. But after reading my post I hope someone can help me make a decision. Please no fanboy like posts, I know everyone likes to, but that doesn't help me make my mind up, if anything it makes me want an Android less.
All I want is something that is reliable and does the main things in an easy way. I have never had any major problems with iOS, a few gripes here and there. But it has become stale. My last experience with Android was horrible, but it may have just been the phone. Played on my friends S3 the other day and I enjoyed it. However I want stock Android/ Google Nexus is I am to jump in again.
Thanks,
Craig
Afaik you can sync your android device with your iPhone, although you need an app, i think one that works is airsync.
Couldnt you sell the iPhone 4 to get money for the N4 and if you dont like it sell it?
-xLychee
Edit: I think this is the wrong place to ask.
I may have missed it, so forgive me if I did. But if I understand you correctly, you still have your iPhone 4 laying around in addition to the iPhone 5 you just upgraded to, right?
If that's the case, and you really want to try the Nexus 4 but need to sell the iPhone to fund the purchase, I'd keep the iPhone 5, sell the iPhone 4 and use the money from the sell of the iPhone 4 towards paying for the Nexus 4. I know you won't get enough to cover the entire purchase, but it will help offset the cost a bit.
Or, you could sell the iPhone 5, keep the iPhone 4 as a backup (in case you weren't in love with the Nexus 4), and not only pay for the Nexus 4, but actually make a profit on it.
If you no longer have the iPhone 4 (if I missed that you sold it or got rid of it), the my apologies and please disregard my advice. :good:
I seriously was thinking of getting iphone5, for camera and music quality. Convinced myself to cough up the bucks for 32GB, $100 for cables, etc. The deal killer was keyboards. Giving up my (highly tuned) Swiftkey would be like giving up my computer mouse. And there is nothing comparable on iphone. Actually having to spell out words again... no way. I guess if someone has never had a mouse, they might not miss one.
I am going to get a Nexus 4. Biggest hesitation is giving up my 32GB SD card, but I can manage. LTE does not matter to me, on wifi 98% of time anyway. Have been planning to switch to Straight Talk regardless, which is AT&T or Tmobile HSPA+.
You might find this interesting -- compares Android to iOS.

To be honest, it sounds to me like you better keep your iphone 5 unless you're prepared to change your mentality. iOS is easier than Android, iOS is meant for the people that just want their phone to do it's job, Android, and especially the nexus line, is made for power users, people that like and want to tweak the phone. If you have no intention to root, you're missing the point of the whole thing IMO. I'm not sure there are too many people around with unrooted nexus phones.
That said, you mentioned that you're bored with iOS. That's a good start
Stock JB is still pure awesome. You don't have to root your phone to have a much better OS compared to iOS.
That is a over simplification of it.
Yes many nexus users are hardcore nerds or fools that think they are . All you had to do over the years was read the general and q&a forums for the nexus devices.
There is also a decent amount of people that simply want a decent quality unlocked phone. No contracts. No carrier bs. Something that the rest of the world is used to but not in the States. Then add in stock android and fast updates.

I still have the iPhone 4. Will get about half the price for the 16GB Nexus 4. So might not be too difficult to find the funds. I can't keep the iPhone 4 though as it is not unlocked and is on a different network. But thanks for the suggestion

See I thought the idea to get stock android was so you could use Android the way the developer intended? Like I said I didn't like Touch Whizz when I used it, even on the S3 that was my biggest issue when using it. I don't like the HTC one (Can't remember what it is called), but I do like the look of stock.
I've seen a number of people with Rooted devices, but honestly (I know it's down to preference) most of the ones I've seen being used look ugly.
But you're saying that there is no point getting a Nexus device and not root it?
And the video ( well not the video itself ) pisses me off. First it is not even that users video. He just stole somebody's video and put nexus 4 in the title. Do not watch and support that garbage. Find the original source if you're interested.
Over 56% off people that switch OS from the original one they initiated their "smart phone" (Oxymoron for IOS) experience on, ended up going back to their original OS.
Stay with what you know and are comfortable with, or you'll more than likely contribute to that 56% going even higher lol
Thanks for all the replies. I think I will probably sell my iPhone 4 and attempt to fund it. Leaving my iPhone 5 as back up. But then thats a damn expensive back up. hmm, maybe need to decide a little more.
But the info provided has been good. Any more news of a couple of the faults that have been reported?

True story. I had a friend that switched his 4S for his girlfriends GNex. He absolutely loved Android, but his GF hated iOS. They ended up switching back because his girlfriend threatened his life. I think many people can live simultaneously with Android and iOS. I have a few friends with a mixture of them.
Can't really tell of faults yet because not many people have the device. You could sell your 4 and buy the nexus. If you don't like it after 15 days return it. Or if you find you prefer it sell the 5. I have the 5 now and plan on keeping both.

See, your bigger concern about the device being rooted is that the ones you saw looked ugly when in fact, being rooted has 0 to do with the phone's look. I'm really not trying to make you look stupid, I understand that most of the people doesn't want nor need to know about any of this. And those are the kind of people that would value iOS over Android. My opinion, if you have the money to do so, give the Nexus a try, but I don't expect you to like it over the iPhone 5.
Had the iphone 5 for 2-3 weeks, and decided to sell it for N4, SGS3 or something close in price.
Going to save the extra money for black friday.
I think you should go for the nexus. One reason being that you can probably pocket half of the money that you get from selling your iphone. As for android being reliable, I have owned a galaxy nexus with jellybean on it ever since it was released. I must say it was a completely flawless UI experience. Also, seeing as you owned a note before, you aren't scared to go for the bigger screen. I know some iphone fans are worried the 4.7" screen may be too big. I used to own the iphone 4 and made the switch to android and never looked back. I just love the customization of android. Oh and by the way, I never rooted/flashed custom roms. I felt stock jellybean was so good it would be unnecessary.
absolutely not, but is your choice.

The phone is not released yet until a week from now. Wait until people get it and read their feedbacks.
About your dislike of Touchwiz, you can simply install a different launcher, it won't change everything, but it eliminates a good part of Touchwiz.

I started with iOS. I never ever wanted to go back.
My 9023 is almost 2 years old and i dont want to spend that much money upgrading to a high-end android model (live in brazil, prices are not fair over here) and i've noticed that the lumia 620 has slightly better specs than the 9023. My phones battery has been a disapointment in late times, i do use alternative rom and kernel, just not sure if WP8 is a good choice towards fluidity and battery (1300mAh), both things i seek as the only thing i use on my phone is whatsapp, music and browsing. Im not a fanboy of brands and things, im more interested in real numbers and experience. Anyone care to give input? http://versusio.com/en/nokia-lumia-620-vs-google-nexus-s
Thx all
Not worth it
If you upgrade wouldn't you want at least a better resolution? The Nokia 620 has the same resolution and is a smaller screen, albeit a higher ppi.
Now if it were the Nokia 920, I would say go for it.

Giving away your Nexus s for a lumia 620 is actually called downgrading not upgrading, if you really love this phone the only way to upgrade is to buy a better android device. Between you and me the windows phones dont get half the suport that android, and especially Nexus phones have. Think of it this way, untill Key Lime Pie commes the nexus s will have custom roms for all versions of Jelly Bean...and then some features of KLP wilk certanly be ported to older devices, but if windows 9 comes do you think it will be ported to old phones. Sorry for repeting myself but the only posible upgrade for a older android phone/phablet/tablet is a new android one

I recently got hooked up with the T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 521 and I am very impressed. I am really liking Windows Phone 8, I never thought I would. It's fresh, clean, modern, no wonder Apple is rumored to be taking some of it's feature and bring them to iOS 7. I think the Lumia 521 is a steal at $129, you get 4G, Windows Phone 8, no contract, and while I know the build of higher-end Lumia's are nothing close to the Lumia 521, I am living it. Wanted to share my first impressions, wtc.. not trying to promote myself, lol, if I'm not supposed to post links let me know and I'll remove it.

Nice review. Only criticisms I can think of are a typo right at the beginning and you talked about WP8 on the whole about as much as you talked about the phone you were reviewing. It felt like an OS review AND a phone review. Dunno if that's a bad thing but it stuck out to me.
Wish that phone wasn't sold out everywhere though. Freakin great deal for a decent smartphone.

Thanks, it was my first time using Windows Phone 8 and I guess I focused on the OS since I was really impressed with it, and typo fixed. It's not sold out everywhere, HSN has it for $149, also wrote about that:

You are 100% right, it's a GREAT deal for a decent smartphone. It's making me want a higher end Lumia now though, lol. I also wish there were more popular apps. One of my favorite iOS and Android apps I use is the free Pocket app. I've been "trying" Read Later. Hopefully more popular cross platform apps make their way to Windows Phone. I currently have an iPhone 5 on Verizon and think the Lumia 521 is a great spare phone, especially since i miss being able to use unlocked phones now and switching sim cards.
Good review.
I managed to obtain one of these from my local Wal-Mart. It's a really good deal, if not the screaming bargain a lot of people are saying. They cut costs and features intelligently.
Mostly, I like the sturdy design and the way it fits together. I don't think I'll even get a proper case for it, although I might look around for a simple sleeve.
I used an X-acto knife and cut down one of my SIMs (I have three prepaid accts.) to micro-sim size. The result was so-so and I had to fidget with the SIM position (powered off, then retry) several times to make it to work. I wised-up and paid a local vendor to punch out my 'main' SIM. That one works much better ...word to the wise.
Windows Phone 8 is mostly good. Feels a bit unfinished. Task-management is weird. Built-in music player is odd; if I can figure out a good choice I'll pay for an alternative. Live tiles don't always update in a timely fashion. That might be the app developers fault.

just got one
Hi guys. I am coming from a gNex with JB- running flapps unofficial and a Note i717 running Avatar 4.2.2 with a UCMD3 baseband. Both of these were not tmobile phones and I run a t-mobile sim on the $30/100min monthly 4g. I usually switch of phones depending what size I want to carry.
When tmobile got the iphone 5 I was tempted to give apple another chance, but then rumors were abundant for the 5s or the 6 coming out soon. Plus I don't want to go on contract- yes, even the no contract is sort of a contract- unofficially till you pay off the phone. So I held off.
Then I saw this lumia windows 521 and I just got a windows 8 touch screen computer. So for Walmarts price, I bought one. I have been playing with it on Ptel for 2 days, and have just punched my tmo sim and put that in. Just ran a speedtest. Blew me away. 18-20 mbps down, and 3-5 up. Wow. That doubles my best on the Note.
I was looking for a smaller phone but with the 4 inch screen. This is working out pretty well. It's about the size of an iphone 3gs with a bigger screen. I am sorting out windows phone 8. Totally different from iOS and android which I have been using steadily for 2 years.
I think the build quality is fine.
Pros
1.Screen is very clear and bright and responsive. I turned the response to low and it still works great. - the font can be made large enough read
texts and emails easily. I love the large screens but not the large phones. Nice compromise.
2. fits well with a good weight in the hand
3. the cover is easily removed and replaced with a replaceable battery and an sd card slot for up to 64 gb
4. I haven't found it lacking for apps that I need- For android I have so much junk on my phone it's nice to only have good ones.
5. My google contacts easily copied as well as my google calendar appts. But the included calendar is so small on the month view it is difficult to read them. Daily is just fine though.
6. Battery life seems incredible. It's down to 79% after 24 hours of use. With data on. Very little use though.
Cons
1. You can add rings tones for calls, but not for sms and notifications. Don't know about alarms yet.
2. Can't put apps on sd card- just internal 8gb worth of space. They did come out with " lumia storage check" app which allows you to put maps on the sd card.
That's as far as I got with the cons. I will use for a couple days and edit.

Contract or non? How much compared to the 521? 521 was $130 off contract- compatible with any carrier.

Samsung Ativ S is around 300-350 off amazon or ebay (t899m) which supports TMO LTE. I have both the 521 and the Ativ. The 521 is nice but the screen is all but unreadable outside in the daylight. I prefer the amoled sammy screen at 720x1280 as well and the 1.5 dual core/16 gb ram. (and it supports microsd cards). about twice the price of the 521 but for what I got it was worth it - 521 is a great windows phone for the price though! You can probably pick up an 810 off ebay for close to the price if not a little over - which has a much better screen and processor.
1GB of RAM, 16GB of Flash. These are not the same thing; don't confuse them. With that said, it is relevant that the ATIV S has 2x the RAM of the Lumia 521.

It's relevant the Ativ S has 2x the ram because some apps and games won't run on 512mb RAM devices.
I just ordered one from HSN yesterday for $99. I love my galaxy note 2, but I have really been wanting to try a Win 8 device to see if I could use it as a daily driver, as I am very linked into the android eco system. For $99 and all of the good things I have heard about this phone I am excited to try it for a while. Worse comes to worse I have a nice back up phone or one for my son.

RAM Doesn't mean anything on WP. You'll get the same experience as a 1020 or 925 on a 520/521
I've had this phone for 2 months and really love it. $99 hsn was a great deal. Jealous of that. I paid $130 with no accessories. Enjoy.
My most used feature is sms, mms, and the navigation feature. That is really great. And the phone of course! I was thinking before I got the 521 of trying the iphone5 for a smaller screen and good user experience. Sometimes android just flakes out on my Note, and when I really needed it twice, it was not usable. Could be due to all the hacking I have done on it though. But considering the cost of the iphone5 and the 521- the 521 won and was a great choice for a smaller phone. It's even smaller than my galaxy nexus. And I enjoyed learning the new windows phone 8.
I love android, but when win phone 8 matures it will give android a run for it's money!
This is my first Windows Phone and speaking mostly for the OS, I think Microsoft did a kickass job. Smooth as butter, and I don't miss multitasking 20 apps in the background. The speaker of the phone sometimes goes incommunicado, but everything else works just fine. Don't miss the $600 tag of an iPhone either

Thanks again!!!

Exactly! People forget that Android used to be in the same boat with the lack of apps.
Android was ugly with a capital U back in its early days. Atleast windows phone is nice to look at and smooth as silk. The apps will come with time.

I currently use a Galaxy s3 and I have been pretty happy with it but the thing is that i want to change my smartphone but right now things got a little tight.
I originally planned to get a galaxy note 3 but it will be too expensive and it will be for sure just released in telcel (Mexican carrier) but I hate them.
So I thought to get a nexus 4 now that it is 200 dollars but I could afford a note 2 so what would you recommend guys the nexus or the note 2?!?!
Its still worth the price undoubtedly

Never been more happy with a phone than with the Note 2 I've had a lot of phones...
I think that the note 3 will be like the s4. Not big enough upgrade to justify the price.
1080p is nothing you need on a 5-6" screen. 3GB ram is not needed now. And i think that note 3 will just add more gimmick (i've turned everything from samsung off on my note 2).
The nexus is sweet but once you go for a Note, there is no way back
Totally worth for each penny you spend..it's too cheap now compared to launch price..note3 will be undoubtedly good than note2 but note2 is still a beast and has nice specs..
Believe me ,my 8 friends bought note2 after using my note2 for a day!!
But if u have money plant growing in ur backyard than wait for note3

Hmm, I would say now. Not because note 2 is not that good but because there is another option.
Buy the extra battery from Samsung, the 3100 mah and you will enjoy s3 more. Note 2 is just big screen and awesome battery. With my suggestion you will have a normal screen with awesome battery.
This is note even a question in my books.
Had (still have in my drawer) Note 1 and Are now a proud Note 2 owner!
And as many has said before, It just a great phone.
Specially with the great battery and lovely screen. And that it(some models) can easily be modded for induction charging or wireless charging as someone wrongly calls it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986016

I don't get this changing for changing-sake thing so many do, and if things are "a little tight" to boot, as you say they are, well, I better bite my tongue...
Anyway, my opinion: the Nexus 4 is a fragile, small non-expandable internal storage, non-removable battery useless P.O.S.
(If things weren't a little tight) I would definitely get a Note II, I don't know in Mexico but here in Italy there are now amazing deals on it.
Since we don't know Note III's specs yet and the Note III is, to me, the ONLY better alternative to the Note II among both the smartphones on the market today and those announced for the near future, the Note II is still the best smartphone in the world right now. Hands down. Far and away.
I have used all galaxy s series. I can honestly tell you that NOTe 2 is the best thing Samsung has ever made. In terms of performance, it beets everything. Just buy it over anything and you won't ever regret it. I believe it will still remain strong for another couple of years.
Yes it is still worth it. I think its't the best on the market at the moment with battery life. But not only the battery life is great, everything on this super phone is great.
this is the best time to get the note 2
prices are much lower, great exchange deals in some places
sds problem dealt with, saner chips coming now, efs hurdle under the belt
forum has all solutions worked out, 4.3 is getting better by the day,
learning my android on me note 2....
i think i might keep this device and not use it for trading for my next
s4 screen is really enticing though, i just couldnt take my eyes off
ill wait for the prices to come down or a second hand piece some time later
Depends on what you want, both the note 2 and the nexus 4 have respectable hardware specs, however there are other issues present.
Note 2 pros: excellent battery, great screen for pretty much anything (watching movies, reading ebooks, etc), pressure sensitive stylus (must have for digital artists), expandable storage, multi-window (gimmick for some, must have for others).
Nexus 4 pros: fast updates on the os.
So if your gonna get a note 2 and whine about samsung never updating the software, go grab yourself a nexus 4 and enjoy the slick goodness of google updates (as well as the buggy versions), if you can live with outdated os, then grab a note 2 and see how awesome a phablet is!

I love my Note 2. It's the first Android device I ever used that was so good out of the box I did not feel like wasting my time with custom ROMS. If you can get a good price, by all means buy it.
I Switched to Nokia Lumia 925 and havnt looked back since !!
Lemme begin with telling you that I have been an Android veteran since last many yrs !!!
Galaxy S > Galaxy SII > HTC One X > Samsung Note 2 > Nokia Luma 925
I was a complete Flashoholic with all my Android devices. And i thought that was fun ! But the constant struggle to have a smoother rom, better battery, better memory management, Sammy vs CM vs MIUI etc etc etc was unsettling !
I am sure most of you can relate well.
But eventually i got fed up of searching for the iOS smoothness in Android.
I switched to Windows phone, specifically Nokia Lumia 925 and havnt been happier !
# U dont have to do any **** on this device to make it run like butter !!!
# Now the time i spend with my phone is quality, usefull time. That i enjoy ! Rather than looking for glitches here n there. Checking out the smoothness etc etc ----> TRUST ME U THINK U LOVE DOING THAT ??? TRY THIS. ITS A LOT MORE FULFILLING.
# Apps ---> no apps ?? are u kidding me ? 6Tag for instagram is better than the orignial on iOS and Android !! YouTube app "myTube" is lightyears ahead of original google app !! IN EVERY DEPARTMENT !! Let me put this clearly, most of the Improtant apps that we use. Its there !! dont go on numbers, go on quality !!!
Talking about Quality... Just go and check out "NDTV"(indian news app) app on both android and WP. SEE THE DIFFERENCE. Android is like a honda. WP is a freaking BENTLEY !!! The finish, the quality, the lay out !!! Pure eyecandy ! This is seen in several/most of the apps on these platforms. And yes no issues with GMAIL n Contacts with google. They all sync well with inbuilt apps.
I am not trying to sell WP here. All i am saying if your spending so much on such high end devices, u might as well want peace of mind and quality with it !
I am finally SATISFIED with my device. I was thinking ill miss flashing roms and all. But i was wrong.
PS: When i used a friends WP for a few mins several weeks back, i dint like it. But now a thought of Android scares me !
At the end, its your choice ! Best of luck !

The S3 isn't bad, is it? Save your money and get the Note3 when you can afford it. I think you'll enjoy the upgrade more and it will last longer

You lost all credibility after that.
I don't understand why you felt the need to post your "Goodbye" in this thread. But cya!
My advice is to wait until you can afford a Note 3, or wait for the next nexus.
What's wrong with the S3 you have anyways?
I don't see the point of of getting a Note 2 when you have an S3. The experience is largely the same on these two devices, other than the s pen and bigger screen and battery on the Note.
