Forgive me for asking these question without a DINC but I have been waiting for weeks and still not device...
I am currently a WM VZW TP2 user and a PC tech. I use wi-fi tethering in a manner to prove my customers my not be right about a PC issue. I will get a call and they will claim the PC cannot get onto their wireless and the issue is not their home network. I can wipe-out my HTC TP2 phone make it a router and then make a new connection on their PC, surf the web, etc...then disconnect and show them that the issue is not the PC but their home service after all...it has been a win-win for me. I want to do the same with the DINC and I am not concerned about free but more so if I have to pay something reliable with no interruptions or lags and no additional cost to Verizon when testing in this manner. Sometimes it is not quick I have to be connected for a little while...
So what I listed above what can you recommend I look for? As you guess the device will be un-rooted since I am new to Driod
If you don't mind paying for it, you will need to get something like the MiFi router or a phone that has the hotspot feature offered officially thru Verizon. I'm not sure what phone, if any, aside from the new Palms have that feature on Verizon.
If you don't mind doing it "against Verizon's TOS" like you've been doing with your winmo phone, then just get an Android phone that can be rooted easily. Like the Moto Droid - you just go to the Market and download ROM Manager. That's about it - install a nice ROM that has wifi tether included and you're done.
Currently on the Droid X you can only use wireless tether to create an ad-hoc network. I've seen on the Incredible where you can use a modified version of wireless tether that allows you to use it to create an access point instead of ad-hoc. Thing is, you have to install a modified kernel on the DInc for it to work and we can't do that (yet) on the DX.
Now, I'm thinking that the functionality is already built into the kernel on the DX, right? I mean, even on 2.1 it had to be for the Verizon's Mobile Hotspot to work and Android 2.2 has it built into the stock kernel already unless Moto removed it for their 2.2. build.
So, anyone think there is a way we can get access point functionality with out current kernel. 2.1 or 2.2?

If you are rooted, you can download wireless tether from the market and it will make your phone a wifi hotspot.

Correct, I am looking for an access point hot spot method, not ad-hoc. Thanks anyway!
Try barnacle tether it does what you want

Incorrect. Barnacle will only do ad-hoc networks as well.
So by now isn't there any way to do that right?...i would pay the 20 $ to Verizon for hotspot but wtf is only 2gb shiiiiittttt.....

Judging by the development page of Android-Wifi-Tether, the issue is known, however, it is considered a low priority at this point. Apparently some people were having trouble even getting Adhoc mode to work with the Droid X, this issue, considered medium priority, was resolved on September 5th, 2010. The infrastructure mode issue is still known, but little effort is being placed in it as of right now from what I can tell.
Although the Droid X does support infrastructure mode, it is a new wifi chip, Android-Wifi-Tether infrastructure mode is based off having the Broadcom bcm4329-chipset (master mode). However, the droid X uses a texas-instruments chip which has yet to go through much testing by the developers of Android-Wifi-Tether. As they are European based, they do not currently have access to a Droid X for testing.
The way our Infrastructure mode works is through a new kernel module, and several drivers, found in the following: /system/etc/wifi : tiwlan_ap.ini, fw_tiwlan_ap.bin and hostapd.conf.templet which are all new to the Droid X as well as the following Kernel Module: tiap_drv.ko
While it is possible to get infrastructure mode working on the Droid X, it will not be through the traditional methods Android-Wifi-Tether uses, as such it is not as simple as some are led to believe, it will take a bit of research and work on their, or the communities, part.

Very informative answer CaptainTaco. Thank you very much!
I have a WAP running on my X. I've had 3 laptops connected to it at once. If this is what you are looking for, PM me and I'll send you the .apk and details on how to set it up.

Why not just make a new thread with this APK? It's obviously in demand.
sounds pretty interesting to me. would love to learn more about this .apk

here it is.. sorry i dont have time to do the settings, i'm sure you can figure them out.
Mess around with encryption on/off and which channel the SSID broadcasts on.
I've had 3 different computers hooked up at one time, all working flawless.
Good luck guys, i'll be back tomorrow afternoon to help out.

Thanks LexusBrain. Can't wait for you to get back to help on this one.
Question, is this a modified version of the app? I already have 2.0.5-pre9 installed and this is 2.0.5-pre7 so I didn't know if this was a special version with different settings that I need to install over the one I have installed.
Looks to be the same. Still Ad-hoc.

I'm sorry, I dont know what else you want. Its wireless tethering, and it works. Maybe I'm missing exactly what it is that you want to do.

Ad-Hoc is not compatible with all wireless devices. Example; other android devices can't connect to a ad-hoc network. What a majority of those in this thread want is Wifi Tethering that supports infrastructure mode.

I see.. My bad. I misunderstood. At least now I have something new to try out but probably not possible without a kernel mod. Or finding a way around the native app. hmm...
maybe i am not using the search tool properly nor posting this in app section.
But anyone know any way to do so?
my xperia x10 is half dead already i would like to 3g tether to tablet for 3g uses.
I search the market for app, none of them seem to support it. Is there another method? I am not too great with this sort of things
would like a detail guide or explanation.
thank you.
p.s: also i would like to ask, is it possible to use rocket mobile 3g fingers from rogers (i live in canada) to obtain 3g? sorry i am not technical so no idea how these things goes.
I don't know anything about rocket mobile, but I just downloaded Quick Wifi Hotspot from the market yesterday and it worked fine while at the restaurant. I left the network open and named it my name and connected via the tablet with no issues. It's also free and that is helpful Hopefully it's compatible with whichever rom/android version you are using. I have an HD2 with an Android 2.3 ROM based on C7 (I think that's all the requisite info).
I have cheap zip cricket cell phone. I do love crickets service here in my area.thou some say its lame elsewhere.
Anyway I rooted my cell installed wireless tether.and when I turn it on my tablet or my notebook will connect automatically and its great for most things even tried Netflix yesterday. Pared with crickets unlimited plan for 50.00 a month.
Set wireless tether to Mac address security lots of people will try to connect.to use your internet.some just do it automatic ..
thank you, the reason i posted this is because my x10 still run on grandpa software (at least not 1.6) android 2.1.
Acer have an instruction on how to enable portable wi-fi option on phone and ad-hoc but 2.1 doesn't have that option yet.
since my phone is already half dead (thank to SE's crappy product), i don't know if i can root it and install custom rom before it brick or dead completely.
i will check out that method thanks.
I am currently using a rooted HTC Thunderbolt and I have recently done an upgrade to the programming that allows me to use my Mobile Hotspot on the phone now. This Hotspot actually works with Android tablets and other devices properly.
I know this is an iffy situation and there may be a possibility if I get too carried away that Verizon can start to charge me for it.
That aside, I have a friend who has a Motorola Droid X. I would like to setup his Mobile Hotspot to do the same. I know others have talked about disconnects and such but I just simply want to connect an Android tablet, an iPad, and one laptop at different times.
Is it possible to do a programming update to the Droid X to enable the Mobile Hotspot or do I need to root the phone to be able to use some of this functionality? I can root the phone if necessary but I would think the hack for the Mobile Hotspot shouldn't need root level access.
Any thoughts or ideas on this subject would be wonderful.
It will require root any way you go. The device can't be unlocked, so you have to root, install Clockworkmod, then install an update.zip to patch the hotspot. That being said, don't patch the native hotspot app. It has been stated by a fairly reliable source that VZW can track useage of that app once it's been hacked to give free service. Root, run FroYo VZW software, or use a 2nd-init ROM with Wireless Tether. I would steer clear of a VZW based Gingerbread, as the stock software has data tracking packages in it, and there's no telling if your ROM maker got ALL of it out.
Thanks for the information. I will go about testing that when I get the phone and get a chance to do so.
I have a Droid Milestone X that I had rooted for a friend and had the MEID # checked by Verizon to make sure it was cleared for verizon's network. The Service tech said it was good to go, which in turn means the phone will have no issues connecting to Verizon's network. However, when he went to connect service at the verizon store the phone wouldn't accept service through verizon. What is the underlying issue and how could this be fixed?
Thanks for the help in advanced

the milestone is a european version of the droid x, it can be used on VZ network however in order to do this is needs to be SBF to a android version that works on the network, I.E. froyo, gingerbread.
you need to see what version of milestone x is now and SBF it over to the compatible version wich would be android based. Unfortunatly there are numerous versions floating around that you can choose from and some will lock you into a version you cant escape like the .621 version. so you need to know what version your can put on your milestone that verizon still uses.
I would start by looking at your settings on the milestone to see what version it is. you can do this by:
hitting home button, then selecting settings then go to about phone.. there is will tell you what everything is. it will tell you MODEL OF PHONE and it should say milestone X, version should say android 2.3.3 or something similar but I dont know what version you have, then look for baseband vers, then kernel vers,. after you find all that you can look on google or droidx forums online and look for whatever you have and find out what Verizon verzion is compatible still then you will need to SBF, RSDlite, or live CD it over...... if you dont know what any of that means then you should look on forums on how to do that. after you have done that you should be able to set it up on Verizon. what ever you do stay away from the .621 update, if you use that one you will be stck on that and wont be able to move off it....
