Hello guys,
I currently own a Galaxy S3 and I'm planning to get a Nexus 4 next month.
I'm only curious about the wireless charging. Can I buy ANY wireless inductive charger from Amazon and use with the Nexus?
Like any of these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_s...ireless+charger&sprefix=wireless+char,aps,261
Thanks!
As long as it mentions Qi-compatible, I think it'll work.
Yes, any Qi-compatible charger will work. Palm Touchstones will not. Duracell Powermats will not.
Thanks guys!
Another question: Can it be used like the Nokia Lumia 920 wireless charger, by placing (sticking) it under the table and charge the phone just by placing it over the table ?
You know you can just get a wireless charging back cover to replace your default one on the the GS3 and I bet it is mega cheap by now and then just get a palm pre unit for the wireless charging for a few quid.
It's nothing new, just a coil, I cannot believe the gimmick has returned with the Nexus 4 and Lumia 920.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not replacing my S3 JUST because of the wireless charging. I know that's a old thing.
I'm replacing because I like the Nexus 4 better design and pure google experience.
The GS3 is a great device, but I hate TouchWiz and we can't fully use an AOSP rom because of the lack of Exynos sources.
As a C#.NET developer, I was getting a Lumia 920 because it seems to be the best WP8 device out there, but it's too expensive for what it really offers, so I'm getting the new Nexus =)

When this drops, will you be looking to purchase it? I think I'll probably get it if it's under $30 bucks... I'm hoping it's much cheaper but trying to have realistic expectations. Unless they've revolutionized how fast it will charge, induction charging is more for novelty IMHO, but no less... What do you think?
Definitely

Honestly, Ill be paying whatever they ask (within reason!) to get the charging orb; sounds like an amazing toy.. and Honestly, it does sound like a real convenience to me *imagines grabbing phone from bed in morning*
Also, if charging IS slower, I generally charge overnight anyway

I guess I would probably spend up to about £60 (just under $100); but I really hope it doesn't cost that much, there will be other compatible Qi chargers if there are not any already
I hacked my Galaxy Nexus to work with a Palm Touchstone and I can never go back. I have one at home and at the office, they're both really convenient. So yes, I'll be grabbing two for sure.
Is the wireless charger included or not?

I assume it'll be a separate accessory. Correction, a SECKSY separate accessory! :good:
I'm looking to get two of these, one for home and one for work. I hope they aren't too expensive, but I won't hold my breath. Then again, if you'd told me the NExus 4 would be £240, I'd have laughed.

I've read that any Qi standard charger will work. We shouldn't have to get the stock one. At least we can price shop.
im planning to get one..but does it charge as fast?
No, wireless charging is a bit slower than a cable
I guess it depends on the price...
The N4 will be compatible with any wireless charging source as long as it supports the standard.
Touchstone chargers can be had on eBay for around $6 so I will be picking up a few from there unless Google's are pretty cheap.
Is anyone else excited about the possibility of finally being able to buy a good universal car dock with wireless charging and not having to buy a new one now on with new phones (assuming that the new phones start coming with wireless charging) ?
Can we do cable charging + inductive charging at the same time?
Will it charge faster?
Wireless charging future
Imagine one day in future where universal wireless charging orb is a standard on every office desk. Can't wait for that day to come.
Can't imagine them pricing it too high, judging by the price of the nexus 4 itself, I'd imagine the wireless charger will be priced what it's truly worth, probably around $20.
If it were apple selling it, it'd be $100 :silly:
I just bought 2 of the touchstone pads for 5 bucks each off eBay just in case they do work for it. Even if they're slower than the nexus versions at least I have backups
I usually get a few ebay batteries for my phone when i'm travelling but it seems that won't be the case this time around with the Nexus 4. Next option would be to pick up a portable battery charger. Any recommendations for one preferably with a built in concealable cable?
Something like this one but larger capacity: http://www.amazon.com/SlimTalk-Exte...TF8&colid=3JV3M6BBIVSNO&coliid=I3SU5TRGE8UZYR
I already have this one, it seems to work really well and will charge my Ipad, Nexus 7 and phones.

This is what I've got as well, it's pretty compact and easy to carry, plus the torch can come in handy at times too. Before that I had a 5000mAh Pebble, which was actually not that much smaller, and was a bit more of a nuisance because it didn't use microUSB to charge itself (instead opting for some weird tiny barrel connector).
I plan on getting one of these (the 10,000 Mah variant )

I may buy one later on. Until then I plan on making a solar charger for my car.

I have both of these. The one the OP is looking at doesn't last nearly as long as the MFG claims it does. The second one is great for the two settings 0.6 and 2.0 amps. The weird thing is that my N7 won't charge on the 2.0 amp setting. I have to connect it to the 0.6 amp setting. And the brand on mine is Anker. I like the latter better, tho you have to have a usb cable. Actually, now that I am thinking about it, it comes with some small cables and various connectors for different devices.

35 bucks for a 8400 mah isnt bad.

Can't wait until they build one of these with wireless charging built in. THEN I'll buy one
I just bought this one - check around for some coupon codes to get an additional $5 off. I liked the look of the Zagg sparq series and the ability to plug it in (no more carrying around an ac adapter) but the build quality is questionable and the price is too high!
What about this one http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-IMP120D-Thunderbolt-Blackberry/dp/B003ZBZ64Q/ref=pd_cp_cps_3
It's a 12000 mAh.
I just ordered one of these 12000mAh from China off ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12000mAh-Ex...444570?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item5d358dcf1a
I didn't buy from this particular seller and I haven't used it yet, so I can't recommend anything about it. (A bunch of sellers sell the same item.)
The marketing material seems legit and the price is good. I'll see if I made the right decision.
The width and height happens to be about the same as the S3 and N4. They claim an efficiency of 90% with the lithium polymer batteries. I would be happy if the N4 required one or two charges to get through an evening out and if this "power bank" could deliver ~4 charges.
The question is, how do you use these things? In the pocket, without an inductive Qi charger of the right size, i don't seem myself charging it with the cable in pocket regularly. It makes it a hassle to pull the phone out of the pocket and use. I see myself charging or powering the phone with it if I find myself sitting down for 10 mins or more, say at a meal.
How are you all planning to use an external battery brick?
yes, portable battery pack is required if you are high end user, playing high end games... I already have one
i purchased the nokia 822 and wireless charging back and found a touchstone(for the palm pre) on amazon for 8$ with 2 day shipping. and the 822 works flawlessly with it! it even magnetically stays in place! enjoy this information and pass it on! much cheaper than verizon or nokias hard to find 50 crap.

careful, it has been proven many times that it is in fact not working. The phone acts like it's charging when you place it onto the charger but it is not. I have a Lumia 920 and thought it works with my HP Touchpad wireless charger - nope. Some people actually reported negative effects such has discharge.
details here

many more in other places. just search touchstone nokia lumia
I did notice that if the phone is on it will not charge completely, but holds at about 90%, phone off it seems to charge fully

Been thinking about getting a wireless charger for some time. However the price has been putting me off for a while.
But, now that demand for QI chargers have been growing, there are more cheaper versions available.
I've been looking around and seen the site mentioned a few times: http://www.fasttech.com
Prices are pretty good ($ to £) and there's free shipping. I've been looking at the USB version as I would want to plug it in to either my desktop or laptop rather than use a mains adaptor.
But I'm worried about the quality of these devices. They don't look too robust and might break easily. Also concerned about charging times, I've heard that cheap QI devices can take a long time to charge or don't fully charge the phone.
So, has anyone got any experience with these products : good/bad or are there better alternatives at the same price.
Thanks

People have been saying the Metrans one has been one of the best QI Chargers, As well as the Panasonic ones. Since more Flagship Phones (HTC ONE, Galaxy S4) are coming out with Qi Enabled I can see more chargers hitting the market. Ones I'm on the watch of are: QiMINI and the New Nokia Car Charger. The QiMINI mostly due to size and portability but if the price is over $60USD I'll pass since I can get the Metrans or the Orb for that much. The Nokia Car Charger looks very promising but if the Price is too high then I'll have to wait to see if other Car Chargers come out. And hopefully it won't have the QC Issues the other Nokia Charger had.
Yeah there are a lot of new designs hitting the market. However, I think paying over $30/£20 is too much for a 'novelty' charger. At the end of the day a wireless charger does exactly the the same job as a $1 cable but doesn't have the ability to transfer files. So I don't really warrant paying loads for a QI charger.
But on the other hand if I get a cheap one I don't want it to be crap!

You set your budget too high For what it does, I wouldn't pay more than 20 (plus shipping) for a QI charger. I believe they are so expensive now because of the novelty. Won't be too long, before they fall below the 20 mark. I already have one on order that costed me 21 including shipping. And that thing is as small as a hockey puck. Look it up in case you haven't, it's called the metrans mwt03

I disagree that it's a good counter. You don't need a wireless charger to transfer files wirelessly. How does that support the purchase decision of one? Add to that the fact that wireless transfer is slower than through a 1$ data cable, it actually weakens your counter
I made the point of Wireless chargers being a bit of a novelty in my review here:

QI Charger cheap
Type into amazon "qi wireless charger" and it should be the first link that comes up, a white charging mat thats says "qi wireless charger" on it, sorry I cant post links :/
This charger has some good reviews on amazon and youtube, and its only £20 with postage! I dont think the official nexus orb is completely worth the money, since people have complained of problems with it not letting the nexus stick to it.
Yeah, so have a look for some videos on it on youtube
I personally prefer the black one lol!
I haven't seen this covered and if it has been, I'd appreciate anyone posting a link to the article. Does the Note4 support wireless charging or will we have to get one of those stickers as we have to do for the Note 3?
Thanks in advance
nevermind, answered my own question, same crap. How come they can include wireless charging in the S5 but not in the Note4? Seems like they did some great stuff that seemed very basic and rushed the Note4 out without the same tech such as dust and waterproof. I don't get it.
I have been wondering the same thing. I certainly won't get one unless it has Qi charging. I am assuming they will release a wireless back cover again.

I don't want to buy another back or another "sticker". How is it other models have it built in and this, their "latest" version doesn't? This is truly a step backward in the Note series. Huawei's devices are looking very nice right now.
I wonder if the quick charging will work with wireless charging?

No. They are two separate things... a given Qi charger only puts out a limited amount of power.
Do the Huawei phones have wireless charging? After you mentioned Huawei I checked out some of their best devices but couldn't see any wireless charging options.
If it is wireless charging, does it mean it will have a magnetic back? I need that so I can stick it to my car CD slot caddy.

^^What he said^^ and theres no way any wireless charger can do that, also given my experience with the LG G3 I am not ruling out damage to the battery or device due to overheating whilst wireless charging, my battery life on G3 perished after such time as I started using wireless charger.
I may be wrong, however, its fairly coincidental.
On a related note the pins are definitely there for wireless charging but no coil as far as I can tell.
Note 4 DOES support wireless charging with the correct door and or cheap coil which im sure will be available soon.
Glad to hear that it supports Qi charging (with add on). Since going wireless on my Note 3 I'll never plug my phone in again.
I'm pretty sure the reason the Note wasn't certified dust and water-resistant is the large long opening in it to accommodate the S-Pen.

I don't see why Samsung or any smartphone company hasn't started using the vapor/nano-coat waterproofing. It wouldn't matter how big any hole is. See HzO, P2i and others.
The day I get my Note 4 I'm sending it in to get 'vaporized'. Only ~50 bucks, totally worth it for a $1000 device that fits in your pocket.
Idk why Samsung doesn't include the wireless charging back to begin with. That way all the cases would still fit it. It's irritating to say the least.
