Anyone getting a portable battery pack? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I usually get a few ebay batteries for my phone when i'm travelling but it seems that won't be the case this time around with the Nexus 4. Next option would be to pick up a portable battery charger. Any recommendations for one preferably with a built in concealable cable?
Something like this one but larger capacity: http://www.amazon.com/SlimTalk-Exte...TF8&colid=3JV3M6BBIVSNO&coliid=I3SU5TRGE8UZYR

I already have this one, it seems to work really well and will charge my Ipad, Nexus 7 and phones.

This is what I've got as well, it's pretty compact and easy to carry, plus the torch can come in handy at times too. Before that I had a 5000mAh Pebble, which was actually not that much smaller, and was a bit more of a nuisance because it didn't use microUSB to charge itself (instead opting for some weird tiny barrel connector).

I plan on getting one of these (the 10,000 Mah variant )
http://www.amazon.com/5600mAh-Exter...&qid=1351732273&sr=1-3&keywords=anker+battery

I may buy one later on. Until then I plan on making a solar charger for my car.

It's nothing really special. If you search for DIY solar usb charger there are quite a few instructions on how to do it for pretty cheap.

I have both of these. The one the OP is looking at doesn't last nearly as long as the MFG claims it does. The second one is great for the two settings 0.6 and 2.0 amps. The weird thing is that my N7 won't charge on the 2.0 amp setting. I have to connect it to the 0.6 amp setting. And the brand on mine is Anker. I like the latter better, tho you have to have a usb cable. Actually, now that I am thinking about it, it comes with some small cables and various connectors for different devices.

35 bucks for a 8400 mah isnt bad.

I've got this coming in the mail right now

I might pick up the 8400 anker if it seems necessary after a few weeks of use.

I'm planning to get one if there is inductive charging build into the case with 7-10k mAh

Can't wait until they build one of these with wireless charging built in. THEN I'll buy one

I just bought this one - check around for some coupon codes to get an additional $5 off. I liked the look of the Zagg sparq series and the ability to plug it in (no more carrying around an ac adapter) but the build quality is questionable and the price is too high!

What about this one http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-IMP120D-Thunderbolt-Blackberry/dp/B003ZBZ64Q/ref=pd_cp_cps_3
It's a 12000 mAh.

I just ordered one of these 12000mAh from China off ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12000mAh-Ex...444570?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item5d358dcf1a
I didn't buy from this particular seller and I haven't used it yet, so I can't recommend anything about it. (A bunch of sellers sell the same item.)
The marketing material seems legit and the price is good. I'll see if I made the right decision.
The width and height happens to be about the same as the S3 and N4. They claim an efficiency of 90% with the lithium polymer batteries. I would be happy if the N4 required one or two charges to get through an evening out and if this "power bank" could deliver ~4 charges.
The question is, how do you use these things? In the pocket, without an inductive Qi charger of the right size, i don't seem myself charging it with the cable in pocket regularly. It makes it a hassle to pull the phone out of the pocket and use. I see myself charging or powering the phone with it if I find myself sitting down for 10 mins or more, say at a meal.
How are you all planning to use an external battery brick?

yes, portable battery pack is required if you are high end user, playing high end games... I already have one

Looking for a spare battery charger

I have had 5 different "cradle" chargers that have failed.
I don't need one that charges the phone or uses as a sync charger.
I just want a standalone separate battery charger. I'd prefer if it plugged directly into the wall instead of via a cable but either works ok I guess
why not have a look on ebay?
J
Can those found on Ebay be considered reliable? I was hoping that maybe someone has already purchased something similar for the Kaiser and wouldn't mind sharing their thoughts and opinions. I would love to have a cradle for my Tilts so I can charge them and their extra battery. However, a simple battery charger would be nice as well.
I bought this cradle and I'm very happy. Working excellent.
HTC also has a cradle/charger, and though it looks much nicer and taking less space, the price is exaggerated.
There is a a battery charger as a stand alone. From the picture the battery is definitely not genuine, but the price worth it even if you'll throw the battery away. I don't know about the reliability of this seller/product though.
I bought this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230228595112 did not receive it yet but looks like what I want. Even though it is only USB but I think I can hook it with a USB wall charger that will also charge it direct
Here's one from Sedio with flip-out AC prongs;

Do you know if this cradle can charge the extended battery (the one that is 3000mah)? I asked the ebay seller that you reference the same question and he said that he thinks it can, but he was not sure.

I have one of those cradles as well and aside from having to do a little 'pin tweaking' with a pair of needle nose pliers (to get the cradle pins to line up with the battery contacts) it works fine. I bought it as a bundle with a spare 1350 mAh battery as well but since the larger capacity batteries still have the same contacts and basic sizes apart from thickness (after all they do fit in the same phone as a standard thickness battery) the higher capacity battery should fit fine. It'll just take longer to charge.
I purchased the Seido charger and it did not work, nor did the replacement they sent. The problem with the design is that it is a universal charger that has inserts for different batteries. Unfortunately the tolerances are not tight and the insert has trouble making contact with the main charger.

I got the 8000mah model for 40 a few months ago from Woot and these are great chargers.
I'm curious, what is the advantage of this over just having a couple Ebay spare batteries and external charger? It seems like the spare batteries are a lot smaller and you can just swap them out. Not trying to a make a point or anyting - but I just dont understand the advantage. I actually have four batteries and 2 chargers and have at least one spare with me at all times. And I got those for cheaper than this Energizer product. Thanks!
Alot of people do not like having to take their case and battery cover off all of the time to switch batteries. I have broken two of my Seidio cases becuase of having to take it off once a day to change my battery.
Makes sense. I guess it is kind of pain to reboot and everything. I have a relative that works at Energizer and prob get me one for very cheap. Might try it out...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NTYYXY/ref=oss_product
You can connect two devices if you have the other cable. I like it and it charges my evo about three times from 30% to 100%
BTW.. You have to push the ON button for it to charge your EVO. There was one dumb arse complaining about it but it tells you in the instructions that you have to turn it ON for it to work.
A 8000 mah external battery is gonna be a friggin BRICK. Hope you have big pockets.
I bought two energizer portable battery chargers- on sale once. I had a military exercise and was going to be in areas where no electrical outlets. Charged them fully and was happy until the freaking port of the energizer charger caved in. Took them BOTH back and got my money back and bought two 3500mAh batteries on ebay instead the next day. I just plugged the usb cable that came with it gently and it broked off inside. It ain't military grade....

Wireless charging Orb

When this drops, will you be looking to purchase it? I think I'll probably get it if it's under $30 bucks... I'm hoping it's much cheaper but trying to have realistic expectations. Unless they've revolutionized how fast it will charge, induction charging is more for novelty IMHO, but no less... What do you think?

I guess I would probably spend up to about £60 (just under $100); but I really hope it doesn't cost that much, there will be other compatible Qi chargers if there are not any already

I've read that any Qi standard charger will work. We shouldn't have to get the stock one. At least we can price shop.
im planning to get one..but does it charge as fast?
No, wireless charging is a bit slower than a cable
I guess it depends on the price...
The N4 will be compatible with any wireless charging source as long as it supports the standard.
Touchstone chargers can be had on eBay for around $6 so I will be picking up a few from there unless Google's are pretty cheap.
Is anyone else excited about the possibility of finally being able to buy a good universal car dock with wireless charging and not having to buy a new one now on with new phones (assuming that the new phones start coming with wireless charging) ?
Can we do cable charging + inductive charging at the same time?
Will it charge faster?
Wireless charging future
Imagine one day in future where universal wireless charging orb is a standard on every office desk. Can't wait for that day to come.
Can't imagine them pricing it too high, judging by the price of the nexus 4 itself, I'd imagine the wireless charger will be priced what it's truly worth, probably around $20.
If it were apple selling it, it'd be $100 :silly:
I just bought 2 of the touchstone pads for 5 bucks each off eBay just in case they do work for it. Even if they're slower than the nexus versions at least I have backups

External Battery Pack? (Small)

I've been searching and searching for good battery packs, but I really don't need anything more than 1 full battery life for my N4. I would actually like it if it can fit my pocket, with the cable and the phone.
What's the best and smallest external battery pack?
http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Exte...qid=1369175734&sr=1-11&keywords=anker+battery
Smaller than the phone and has the micro-usb plug built-in.
$28
Or you could get the Zerolemon battery case. $41
I recommend the Anker. Not enough juice for my taste but the size and built-in cable are fantastic.
More battery packs should have built-in cables IMO
I haven't tried this one, but looks very good and portable.

Eh, but the problem is you need to also lug around a cable. The Slim is a really good size. Kind of like carrying two phones. Not too awkward to hold and use while charging either.

Cable's not a problem, I have a very short one that doesn't tangle around my pocket. I don't even know where I got this lol. But with that Slim + a small cable and phone, my pocket wouldn't feel bulky at all. Already ordered one, hopefully it's a good one.

like the integrated cable - I have bought 2 NewTrent external powerpacks over the years (I lost the first one).
Also available on Amazon, and they are often heavily promoted. They are good quality, and have a huge range of capacities available. Though unless you are planning going into the jungle for a week, I would get something in the 3-4,000mAh range.
That is 1-2 days' heavy use, and since capacity is lineally proportional to size and weight, you get that capacity for about the same size as a normal smartphone.

This is the one I use for quick-charging. It worked really well with the S8+ and so far is working with the S9+. The only drawback is you have to use your Samsung wall plug that came with the phone, the charger does not come with one.

It should work with any wall plug, but it may not do the quick charge, unless it has the 2A output.
I'm looking for a charger that has USB-C. Reviewers seem to enjoy the new Anker Powerwave (links below). It includes a wall adapter, which reflects the high price. However it seems to only be available in the us (thus us adapter) atm.

It should work with any of the following standards:
Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 or above
Samsung adaptive FastCharge
I just use the Samsung Quick Qi charger that I got for my S7. Amazon Link Used it also for my S8 and now I'm using it for the S9+ and it still works great.
Does anyone know what's the max current s9+ accept for wireless charging? 7.5W, 10W or 15W??

I've bought 4 off Amazon over the years from Seneo. They've always been great and offer a few different designs. Usually between $20-35 depending if you need the QC 2.0/3.0 adapter or not.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother. For the last 12 months of my S7 Edge life the wireless charger sat gathering dust. It's a bit of a fad in all honesty. It's no more convenient then plugging in really and sometimes less convenient as you manouvere the device around to hit the sweet spot. Now we have USB C connection its so easy to plug in.
Only plus side to wireless is it saves on wear and tear on the charging socket. If you're picking your phone up and back down again a lot then wireless is beneficial. But if its for say, bedside and charging over night while sleeping, may as well just plug it in.

If I'm in my bed and go to sleep after reading on my phone I'm already half asleep. The only thing I have to do is put it on the cradle.
Without one I need to search the cable with my left hand in the dark, plug it in (which was hard to do with my Nexus 6) and lay it down. Sometimes I'm too tired already and just lay it down hoping to be able to charge it in the morning. At work i will have a place to put it down..
It was in fact the deal breaker when I had too decide between this phone and the Pixel 2 XL.
My Nexus 6 ate USB cables... I don't know if it was just my Nexus or all of them. My Nexus 6 fell from the bathroom sink last Sunday and now I'm glad I can move to USB-C which was the connector we should have had all this time. How they could have made such a bad successor of the mini-USB I still can't understand. Hopefully my expectations of the USB-C will meet up....
I'm just saying with USB C its not an issue plugging it in, you don't need to orientate the connector. The wireless pad, half the time you would place it down and because it was slightly off you had to rotate or manouevre the phone until it started charging.
If you think it'll be more convenient to you, go for it. I'm just saying I was excited and believed it would be for me too when I got the S7 Edge but as I say, for the last twelve months I never used the wireless charger.

Wireless charging is a tradeoff for convenience. I picked up a wireless car charger at Walmart. Forget the brand offhand but it was about 50 bucks. It did do wireless fast charge and comes with its own plug / cable.
Doing delivery driving, not plugging and unplugging my phone 40 or 50 times a day is certainly awesome. However, streaming music over blue tooth and running the GPS will only marginally charge it, so over the course of a night I lose battery. Just something to think about.
