What's Google policy in terms of loading 3rd party ROMs? (is it allowed)?
That is essentially the point of AOSP and the Nexus line.

While it may be the case, their policy may say something else, so I wanted to know.
What if one have 3rd party ROM installed and you send your device back to them and they saw it? Are they going tell me that it's "this is why we build nexus line for you! or you violated our policy, so screw you!"

I've sent in plenty of phones with custom software.
During troubleshooting, you SHOULD flash a stock rom to see if the problem persists. I've told customer service that I've flashed custom ROMs on there and the problem never went away (eliminating software as a problem) so I suspect it is is hardware.
Typically the rule of thumb is to just flash back to stock before you send it in.

It clearly says upon unlocking the boot loader that it voids your warranty

Google doesn't actually warranty anything. That's up to the OEM. That being said, the official line from any given OEM is that unlocking the bootloader and/or rooting nullifies the warranty. Conversely, if one returns to stock prior to sending in an RMA, they have no way of knowing. Furthermore, if the failure is clearly of a nature that the modification could not Haber contributed to, they are generally legally prohibited from denying a warranty claim.

I just got a message from "Redbox Instant (beta) by Verizon" that reads
"Sorry. For your security, we can't let you continue because your device is rooted. Rooted devices increase risk to you and to us. That's why we can't let you enter your credit card information, make a purchase or stream movies."
Anyone know a way around this?
Thanks

Wrong forum, this is the international i9300 forum
and ask in the help section
With how quickly the S4 got locked down, I am wondering if folks expect that the S5 will be locked down from the get go.
Would be pretty disappointing if we could not install custom recovery and load custom roms...
Its locked, thanks knox

Too bad one can't just turn it into a Dev device.
I wondered if it'd be crippled by Knox.......
Oh well....when I'm up for a new contract.....looks like it's gonna be Sony (as I don't like HTCs attitude toward the dev community either).
End of an era as it will be the first time I haven't used a Samsung phone in about 15 years........

The S4 bootloader isn't locked by Knox, wherever you have read this it's a total BS.

It may not be locked, but thanks to Knox it might as well be, as you can't touch it without triggering Knox.......

So you trigger Knox and nothing else happens, just can't use it anymore.
No....just the fact that there is un-erasable proof that you have voided your warranty...... which, on a premium priced phone is a bad idea. I know that for most phone modders, triggering Knox is an acceptable risk, but for the few that have unrelated failures of the device.....to find that they have no recourse would be a REAL issue.......

Knox warranty shouldn't be the same as device warranty. It only means that you can't use it anymore.
Samsung never locked bootloader , they just add knox warranty void counter which is isn't restoreable to 0 outside Samsung service center
AFAIK this dont void warranty in all countries but it will in most of them
I'm pretty sure I've read that the device can't be used on some company/business networks if Knox has been triggered......
I'm pretty sure I've *also* read that Samsung are going to try to use it as a breach of warranty too......

Then it all goes down to how you approach them to request something. In the US it should be a hard time, but in the UE you are protected by the law, you can root your device freely. Here in Brazil they fixed my brick-bugged S2 under warranty.
Yeah....but a brick bugged device wouldn't power on, so there would be no way for Samsung to tell what OS you were using at the time it fried itself.......

So as long as you don't care about using Knox or voiding your warranty, you can still root the S5 and use custom ROMs/bootloaders, right? I couldn't care less about warranties or Knox. It's been about a decade since I've used a warranty on one of my phones.

Exactly.
Yeah....I said that a few posts back.....for *most* people it won't matter.....but for the inevitable few who have unrelated device failure AFTER rooting, it's gonna cause problems.......

ITT: people whining about warranty because they can't hide their theft of service anymore, as they did since the S2 three years ago. ( Triangle away anyone? )
Whining? HOW RUDE ARE YOU?
FACT....phones DO suffer hardware failures.
FACT....Samsung will deny liability for a 'modified' phone that needs repair......
'And Theft of service?'.......how *exactly* is rooting 'theft of service?'.......
Sent from my Infected KitKat bar.....
To start off, I know that rooting will trip the Knox counter (as of now) thus voiding my Samsung warranty.
What I would like to know is if this really matters, since I pay for insurance through my carrier (MetroPCS) any issues I have can be solved that way. Yes there would be a deductible but I wouldn't mind that so much as I would like having a rooted s5.
Thanks in advance for your time

tbh most insurance companies look for any way out of paying claims no way to know till you try to claim unless we have an assessor as an xda member who can shed more light on the subject.

Yeah I think they might be checking, we just don't have much information on it. Users never report back. If I'm you I wouldn't root just yet, might make your insurance monthly payment null

Depends on where you're from. If you're from Sweden for example, they have to be able to prove that your software is the issue of any hardware problem or they have to accept your return and repair your phone.
It's been discussed a lot in other threads and this is just based on everyone's experience.
