Hey All,
I did a quick search through the N7 forums and didn't find anything, so I'm going to throw out yet another effect that I'm hoping some of you hardcores out there are experiencing: When I apply pressure to the lower left hand corner of the tablet (left and bottom bezels, tablet upright with camera on top), it blanks and screen locks; it sort of fizzles a bit and I have to reopen the screen a few times using the power button to bring it back to a stable, open state.
You might say "don't hold it there." Fair enough. But that happens to be one of my favorite places to hold it when I read a book, so it'd be a bit more of a change than I'd prefer... Suggestions on how to fix it would be great.
Thanks!
John

Tried to replicate the problem you are facing but no such problem on my nexus7. Maybe you should get a replacement.

No such issue here. Go check a demo unit to compare. I think you need to return it.
Plastic on top bends and creeks on mine...

Saw this in a search, same problem here. Is this really not a common issue? It's terrible when you pick up your $800 tablet and it makes an awful noise like it's going to break.
Just got mine out my bag to check but it's solid.
Noticed a gap in mine today before seeing this thread. What bothers me most is the creak/crack if I press a particular part of the screen. (Jump button in Cordy) .

The creak is absolutely annoying.
I think i may just buy a transformer and take the xoom back and save $400.
Sigh.
i have also noticed mine has started doing this...
I know mine has made this noise before but it comes and goes. Its a bit annoying but doesn't seem to be consistently happening.

If you find the area, you won't be able to ignore it.
Try this: Go to the metal part on the left side where it starts below the volume/plastic, put your thumb on the edge and "pry" that area away from the glass (towards the back) report back with noise.

Turns out it didn't matter. I ended up taking my wifi xoom back and exchanged it for another one. My original started showing dust under the screen! Looked on here and seems to be one of many occurrences...
Mine also!

Nice, my power button only works 1/3 of the time at the most, so it's likely getting exchanged anyway, maybe returned.
Same here creak/crack from left side,
Anyone has this problem? For example if I lay the phone down on my bed, I won't be able to hit the back button. The entire touchscreen responds done though...
Anyone?

Yep.............
"You're holding it wrong."
That sounds very strange.
Well, I'd hate to say it, but are you "pressing them wrong"?
What I mean is, we all know the buttons are a little tricky, how the touch sensitive part is near the top of the button. Could it be you've trained yourself to easily press them the correct way while holding, but when it is lying down you end up pressing it lower? Due to the angle of your finger when you touch it?
I've never had any trouble when the phone was laying down, and just tried it out again right now. I do have to touch them in the exact same spot (shifted a bit higher) as when holding it.
When I first got my N1 I noticed the same. Just hit it a bit higher
Sent from my Nexus One
Yea I tried out suggestions by you guys, hitting higher did help!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Odd, I always had this problem, never considered it much of a problem. Mainly cause I hold it 99% of the time, but I did find that if I touch it lower, as in touch the bezel at the same time as I touch the button, no problem.

This! I thought the same thing as the OP when i first got mine, but you get used to it.
I've also experienced this... but as the others would say just hit higher or you'll get used to it.
Sent from my Nexus One using xda premium
Having vibrate on for button press helps a lot because of the issue with having to hit the buttons higher.
It does get a little annoying but small price for such a good phone really I'm loving it regardless. It does seem like a strange thing though I've not come across it on some of the other android phones I've had before.
Had never happened for me. Its the same if i hold it in hand or not.
I probably have the new item paranoia but I'm finding if I press on the screen with a little force visual anomalies appear around the press area for a moment. Mostly in top right corner. Mostly I'm just looking to hear if this is a common experience or if I'm alone. Can't make this happen with the same level of force with say my iPad...of course, press hard enough on any LCD and this happens...its mostly just concern that it happens so easily for my nexus 7

Hi guys...Just bought a N7 for my GF as a X-Mas gift and while it's great when working, there is a major touchscreen issue going on.
Let me first say I have searched and searched and came up with a lot, unfortunately it seems the problem was "fixed" by google with official updates. Well not in this case. I am on latest 4.2.1.
The issue is, the touchscreen will completely rearrange itself somehow. Example- if you click on something in the upper end it will click something randomly at the bottom of the screen. Another issue it, if you click on search/browser address bar and start typing, there is a ton of lag , and any number of things happen like, again, something else will get pressed at the bottom, or it will do nothing, and then suddenly start hitting a key (again, with the keyboard popped up at the bottom) like x over and over again, filling the page with 10-20 X's...
As soon as I put it to sleep and wake it up/unlock...it immediately goes away, just to come right back in a few minutes.
She does have a case on it with a magnet to auto wake, so I told her to take it off and see if it keeps doing it. It does...so no go there...
I want to call google for support, but am scared of getting a dumb rep that will tell me to power off the device etc...you know the drill...by the book pre-written crap they tell you to do, that solves nothing.
Any help would be much appreciated...and again sorry if this is something well known and simple to fix, but again, all my research dates back to june posts about issues already fixed via updates.
Thanks in advance!
Have you already tried a factory reset as after most recent update? You will lose all data but worth a shot. May need to RMA.

Factory reset...ok for a while..then it started again...
Got it all figured out tho....if you ever so slightly twist the body to the left the screen will not respond at the bottom and will start pressing itself randomly....sometimes even touching the bezel will do something. ..then twist it a bit to the right and all is well...
Sh*t built product obviously. Had it in a case before even turning it on.
Going back...hopefully replacement will be better.

I might be in the minority as couldn't find much info on this...
Not only the power btn is placed on top thus less easy to get to while using one hand, but is simply too recessed on my device. I got it 3 days ago, it is almost perfect quality build wise, but it'll take me much more to get used to this feature.
I have to press really hard, and even then has to be perfectly centered, I find it easier keeping the phone in my right hand or else have to use both hands for this.
Trust me really bad choice having placed this button this way. Hope they will change it next iteration.

Flash custom ROM, volume or HTC logo to wake, problem solved.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
That might be the way..
I hope the HTC logo hack will be made available for unlocked stock though.
In the meantime I am adjusting to it I guess, set up higher inactivity timeout, when done with it just let the timeout expire, etc.

Why give a free pass for QC issues? Return it and get another.

Which ROM hás the ability to use HTC logo?
That's awesome. But wouldn't that make the phone turn on every time you have it in your pocket?
My button is slightly recessed or only raised a bit above the phone, but I find it very easy to press and I can press anywhere on the button. If I were op, I would definitely exchange it or just simply return it, you only bought it a few days ago right?

tbalden's kernel -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2244620
Replace it! I just received my new device and the difference is staggering. I can actually hear the clickity clack of the button now. Also other defects are gone (overhang)
Thanks for your replies.
I was trying to get a pic of this but giving up.. Really tricky.
I will go to some stores holding the demo, see how it compares. Until then, I got a better idea how to explain this: holding my phone while typing this, I swipe my fingernail fro right to left over the power btn, no resistance, flush with body. Doing the same thing, the other way round, I meet a very slight resistance, ie the left corner is slightly raised, maybe 1mm. Is this normal?

Mine seems to be slightly raised on the left side also, but I don't have as much trouble as you are having. I cant press it very well from the right side though. Maybe the IR blaster is in the right and the actual button is on the left? Needs more info I guess.

Another reason to root. You can install a number of different kernels that allow you the ability to wake and put the device to sleep without using the power button.
Reviews have complained about the button being recessed its downright horrible thing from HTC to not think through such an important thing even when they seem to care so much about the little details of the phone. And no using some custom ROM/kernel is not the right solution at all.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Exactly same here less than 1 mm extended and left is slite up and right side is sink in dip or exactly flush or levelled with surface this is my 3rd HTC one 1st 3rd got exactly same button only 2nd one has acceptable but not perfect
Send from HTC ONE
Mine is exactly the same. Power button is flush to the device with no resistance if i wipe my finger across, and the left side of the button is less than a mm higher than the phone. I bought a case it its near impossible to power on the device without really digging in. I went in store for them to have a look at it but they practically laughed and smirked at one another and said they aren't going to fix it as the button still works. They wouldn't even get another handset out to compare the two buttons. Looks like i'll have to put up with it. Either that or go out my way to visit another store.
Is there anybodyr report better buttton after replacement?
Send from HTC ONE
Seen 3 demo models in as many stores today. Two of them were unfortunately showing similar recessed buttons. Only one had a slightly, maybe 1mm, raised button, however it felt much better, much easier to press.
For this reason only I guess I am going to ask for a replacement next week.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
As an aside, all the dummies on display had 'normal' raised power buttons, maybe even 3 mm or more.

Mine is perfect after my first replacement. I'm on Sprint btw and complained specifically about the button. The overhang was gone as well but the second device still has a bit of a gap. Nothing major.
