LCD hitting digitizer with mild/moderate pressure? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I probably have the new item paranoia but I'm finding if I press on the screen with a little force visual anomalies appear around the press area for a moment. Mostly in top right corner. Mostly I'm just looking to hear if this is a common experience or if I'm alone. Can't make this happen with the same level of force with say my iPad...of course, press hard enough on any LCD and this happens...its mostly just concern that it happens so easily for my nexus 7

Yes. Maybe glass screen is a bit thinner than on iPad?

My NS has a lot of problems and I still LOVE it

Please, please, stop all these new threads about problem after problem.
My phone has the bent glass curve at the top but not the bottom, I have a screen with a major blue tint, it has about 4 or 5 little bands running across it, and the home button even freezes from time to time.
I'm not stressing. None of these issues really hinder me from using my phone. AND if they did, I wouldn't make a 2nd or 3rd thread about the issue when using the search button would bring up numerous results. Hell, when you create a new post now, XDA is nice enough to auto search for you.

No problems here, I think the glass is supposed to "bend" at the top, it is concave after all.
mine is like a Boat!
sort of like a flat banana
it does seems to have been designed that way, else i'll imagine the glass to be flat, instead of concave
the case plastic shell of the phone is concave shape as well

Is this what everyone complains about?

Just got my nexus 7 in today. It seems fine, although, I noticed that con the cleft side of the screen, it seems to be slightly raised in the middle. The corners attached fine. Are people sending out back for this? It doesn't seem like an issue, just an annoyance
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Sounds like it. Seems like it's always on the left side for some reason. It's lifts up over the bezel and you can push down on it and it lifts again later. That is how mine is... or was hopefully.
I heated it up with a game, then put a couple clamps on it, left it over night turned off, and today it has stayed down so far. Hope the adhesive that is suppose to hold the glass down sticks now.
I had a previous one though that was slightly different, it was raised on the left side, but I couldn't push it down. Seemed like a screw was tightened too far or something. I sent that one back.
Either deal with it or get a refund if it really bothers you. You can also try number of fixes that are posted on these forums. They pretty much all have this issue to some degree.

Yes this is it, but the real problem is if it makes a noise when you push on it. THATS the annoying part.
Mine doesn't make any noise, although it definitely is a tiny bit squishy and if you try and push hard on it, it does act a little like an LCD monitor. I just didn't care enough to try and return it, as I would have never noticed it if everyone hadn't had their panties up in a wad as much as they did. I figure the worst that happens is that it gets worse over the next year and I end up having to spend a whole $200 more on a newer model.
I agree. I can't imagine this truly hurting the experience. Oh well. Not a big deal as long as it works well

Are you guys serious? If I buy a product, it better not have defects. Why would anyone settle for bad quality? Products these days should not have any issues with the technology we have.
This doesn't make sense to me.
Mine is arriving next week and I hope everything is perfect.

I agree, if it was a true issue I would get a new one. In my case, it is only raised in the middle, and not that noticeable. Everything else is fine. You can fix that too
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Besides it shouldn't affect performance. I hope

When I got my second one from the play store, it looked like the middle of the left side was raised. I thought I pushed it down but it never came back up.
I keep looking at it and touching it but nothing. I don't know if I imagined it or maybe bad lighting.
Just install a TPU case where the lip overhangs the screen. Problem solved. Out of sight out of mind. I'm enjoying my N7.
If its a problem 6 months later then I'll call and exchange it. Big whoop.

Doesn't affect my daily use so why should I care. I purchased a two year warranty through square trade should anything go wrong. I shouldn't expect defects but if it truly isn't hurting anything, then meh.

I don't think that they all have this issue, only a select few. I have been lucky enough to get 4 Nexus 7's and no issues. I have seen the issue posted on the site several times though, and the fixes seem pretty easy. There are some youtube videos on fixing it too. Good luck fixing it mate, would take advantage of the warranty if I were you.
Thank you! I can't understand why anyone would send it in for something like that

You can't understand how when someone holds their tablet by the left bezel and it creaks like a floor board, they'd like to return it? That perhaps when using the tablet as a book they don't want to be distracted by clicking noises?

I am not talking about a problem to that extreme, I am talking about, a very slight raise in the middle, with no squeak. The only thing that I can think of that could be bothersome about that is that when you push hard on the bezel, a little bit of the left screen ripples

I have exact the same problem as described. They most annoying part is they "cracking" sound it does when tapping on the left side. I curious whether the touchscreen responsivness issue is somehow related to this problem.
Btw I thought it might be related to the processor since its also on the left side, maybe the heat causes the glue to detach ... if you know what I mean.

Yet Another Hardware Problem?...

Hey All,
I did a quick search through the N7 forums and didn't find anything, so I'm going to throw out yet another effect that I'm hoping some of you hardcores out there are experiencing: When I apply pressure to the lower left hand corner of the tablet (left and bottom bezels, tablet upright with camera on top), it blanks and screen locks; it sort of fizzles a bit and I have to reopen the screen a few times using the power button to bring it back to a stable, open state.
You might say "don't hold it there." Fair enough. But that happens to be one of my favorite places to hold it when I read a book, so it'd be a bit more of a change than I'd prefer... Suggestions on how to fix it would be great.
Thanks!
John

[Q] Anyone also having the Nexus 7 "touching itself"?

So just this morning, something wierd occurred with my Nexus 7. It seems that another finger or the nexus 7 touching itself. I manage to restart the device and it seems to be ok (for now).
So I turned on the "visual feedback for touches" in the Developer options and this is the result (quick video)

Does anyone also have this issue?
I've had this issue, cleaning the screen fixes it for me.

I was lured here by a kinky sounding title. That's messed up though, is the screen lifting on any side?

LOL. I do have a slight screen lifting on the left side when held in portrait but its not worse(It is somehow fine with me) compared to the others.
Tried cleaning the screen(Thanks to neonghost) and it seems to work properly now... so far.
try a different kernel.. i was reading that one of them had that issue.. started with an M i forgot the name.
I have it and it seems to be related to screen lifting as I've found holding it on the left side causes ghost touches. The left side is the same one which is prone to screen lift of course. My unit has zero screen lift but it seems there may still be too much pressure or something on that one side.

That would be motley or metallice.
But it wasn't their Kernels causing it, it was Clemsyns (however its spelt) which was stock but underclocked.
Seemed the underclocking was too severe.
But yeah can also be a dirty screen.
Thanks for the into. I do use a custom room and kernel. And i have a very slight screen lift which i can ignore.
And yeah the pressure theory you have might be plausible as i do hold the nexus on the left hand corner when in portrait.
As of the moment cleaning the screen solved the issue for now. I'll look into your suggestions once it occurs again.
I think your nexus is HAUNTED!! Could be the "ghosts in the machine" that they talked about on iRobot. This is an OS called android after all.

Power button too recessed

I might be in the minority as couldn't find much info on this...
Not only the power btn is placed on top thus less easy to get to while using one hand, but is simply too recessed on my device. I got it 3 days ago, it is almost perfect quality build wise, but it'll take me much more to get used to this feature.
I have to press really hard, and even then has to be perfectly centered, I find it easier keeping the phone in my right hand or else have to use both hands for this.
Trust me really bad choice having placed this button this way. Hope they will change it next iteration.

Flash custom ROM, volume or HTC logo to wake, problem solved.

That might be the way..
I hope the HTC logo hack will be made available for unlocked stock though.
In the meantime I am adjusting to it I guess, set up higher inactivity timeout, when done with it just let the timeout expire, etc.

Why give a free pass for QC issues? Return it and get another.

Which ROM hás the ability to use HTC logo?
That's awesome. But wouldn't that make the phone turn on every time you have it in your pocket?
My button is slightly recessed or only raised a bit above the phone, but I find it very easy to press and I can press anywhere on the button. If I were op, I would definitely exchange it or just simply return it, you only bought it a few days ago right?

tbalden's kernel -

Replace it! I just received my new device and the difference is staggering. I can actually hear the clickity clack of the button now. Also other defects are gone (overhang)
Thanks for your replies.
I was trying to get a pic of this but giving up.. Really tricky.
I will go to some stores holding the demo, see how it compares. Until then, I got a better idea how to explain this: holding my phone while typing this, I swipe my fingernail fro right to left over the power btn, no resistance, flush with body. Doing the same thing, the other way round, I meet a very slight resistance, ie the left corner is slightly raised, maybe 1mm. Is this normal?

Mine seems to be slightly raised on the left side also, but I don't have as much trouble as you are having. I cant press it very well from the right side though. Maybe the IR blaster is in the right and the actual button is on the left? Needs more info I guess.

Another reason to root. You can install a number of different kernels that allow you the ability to wake and put the device to sleep without using the power button.
Reviews have complained about the button being recessed its downright horrible thing from HTC to not think through such an important thing even when they seem to care so much about the little details of the phone. And no using some custom ROM/kernel is not the right solution at all.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Exactly same here less than 1 mm extended and left is slite up and right side is sink in dip or exactly flush or levelled with surface this is my 3rd HTC one 1st 3rd got exactly same button only 2nd one has acceptable but not perfect
Send from HTC ONE
Mine is exactly the same. Power button is flush to the device with no resistance if i wipe my finger across, and the left side of the button is less than a mm higher than the phone. I bought a case it its near impossible to power on the device without really digging in. I went in store for them to have a look at it but they practically laughed and smirked at one another and said they aren't going to fix it as the button still works. They wouldn't even get another handset out to compare the two buttons. Looks like i'll have to put up with it. Either that or go out my way to visit another store.
Is there anybodyr report better buttton after replacement?
Send from HTC ONE
Seen 3 demo models in as many stores today. Two of them were unfortunately showing similar recessed buttons. Only one had a slightly, maybe 1mm, raised button, however it felt much better, much easier to press.
For this reason only I guess I am going to ask for a replacement next week.

As an aside, all the dummies on display had 'normal' raised power buttons, maybe even 3 mm or more.

Mine is perfect after my first replacement. I'm on Sprint btw and complained specifically about the button. The overhang was gone as well but the second device still has a bit of a gap. Nothing major.
